• Global and local variables in my script

  I'm starting out learning javascript, and tried to write a little script that would make a grid of divs on a page. What should I be doing differently? Why can't makerow() see my global leftPos variable (and all the other variables for that matter)? Thanks.

• Combination of JFreeChart with JXLayer with JHotDraw

  Recently, I had use JXLayer, to overlay two moving yellow message boxes, on the top of JFreeChart http://yccheok.blogspot.com/2010/02/investment-flow-chart.html I was wondering, had anyone experience using JXLayer + JHotdraw, to overlay all sorts of figures (Re-sizable text box, straight line, circle...), on the top of JFreeChart. I just would like to add drawing capability, without changing the JFreeChart source code. So that, JStock's user may draw trending lines, annotation text on their favorite stock charting. My experience in using JHotDraw are with org.jhotdraw.draw.DefaultDrawingView org.jhotdraw.draw.DefaultDrawingEditor I am able to use them to draw various figures, by clicking on the toolbar and click on drawing area. How is it possible I can use DefaultDrawingView and DefaultDrawingEditor within MyUI's paintLayer? Also, shall I let MyUI handles the mouse event, or JHotDraw? Sorry, I start getting confused.

• Transitioning from desktop app written in C++ to a web-based app

  We have a mature Windows desktop application written in C++. The application's GUI sits on top of a windows DLL that does most of the work for the GUI (it's kind of the engine). It, too, is written in C++. We are considering transitioning the Windows app to be a web-based app for various reasons. What I would like to avoid is having to writing the CGI for this web-based app in C++. That is, I would rather have the power of a 4G language like Python or a .NET language for creating the web-based version of this app. So, the question is: given that I need to use a C++ DLL on the backend to do the work of the app what technology stack would you recommend for sitting between the user's browser and are C++ dll? We can assume that the web server will be Windows. Some options: Write a COM layer on top of the windows DLL which can then be access via .NET and use ASP.NET for the UI Access the export DLL interface directly from .NET and use ASP.NET for the UI. Write a custom Python library that wraps the windows DLL so that the rest of the code can be written. Write the CGI using C++ and a C++-based MVC framework like Wt Concerns: I would rather not use C++ for the web framework if it can be avoided - I think languages like Python and C# are simply more powerful and efficient in terms of development time. I'm concerned that my mixing managed and unmanaged code with one of the .NET solutions I'm asking for lots of little problems that are hard to debug (purely anecdotal evidence for that) Same is true for using a Python layer. Anything that's slightly off the beaten path like that worries me in that I don't have much evidence one way or the other if this is a viable long term solution.

• Breeze Expand not working on WebAPI with EF

  I have published a WebAPI service which returns a list of items. I am implementing Breeze and have managed to get it basically working with filtering/sorting. When I use .Include on the server side I can populate it with EF, but I don't want to do this. • iPhone Localization: simple project not working

  Hello Im doing my first localized project and I've been fighting with it for several hours with no luck. I have to create an app that, based on the user selection, shows texts and images in different languages. I've read most of Apple's documents on the matter but I cant make a simple example work. This are my steps so far: 1) Create a new project. 2) Manually create a "en.lproj" directory in the projects folder. 3) Using TexEdit create file called "Localizable.strings" and store it in Unicode UTF-16. The file looks like this: /* Localizable.strings Multilanguage02 Created by Gonzalo Floria on 5/6/10. Copyright 2010 __MyCompanyName__. All rights reserved. */ "Hello" = "Hi"; "Goodbye" = "Bye"; 4) I drag this file to the Resources Folder on XCode and it appear with the "subdir" "en" underneath it (with the dropdown triangle to the left). If I try to see it on XCode it looks all wrong, whit lots of ? symbols, but Im guessing thats because its a UTF-16 file. Right? 5) Now on my view did load I can access this strings like this: NSString *translated; translated = NSLocalizedString(@"Hello", @"User greetings"); NSLog(@"Translated text is %@",translated); My problem is allowing the user to switch language. I have create an es.lproj with the Localizable.strings file (in Spanish), but I CANT access it. I've tried this line: [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] setObject: [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"es", nil] forKey:@"AppleLanguages"]; But that only works the NEXT time you load the application. Is there no way to allow the user to switch languages while running the application?? Do I have to implement my own Dictionary files and forget all about NSLocalizableString family?   I am having problems getting any kernel modules to build on my machine. • Simple way of getting the Last.fm artist image for recently listened songs?

  On the Last.fm website, your recently listened track include the 34x34 (or whatever size) image at the left of each song. However, in the RSS feed that they give you, no image URLs are provided for the songs. I was wondering if there was a good way of figuring out the ID for the image that needs to be used for that artist and displaying it based on the data that we're given. I know it is possible to load the artist page from their website and then grab the image values from JavaScript, but that seems overly complicated and would probably take quite some time to do.   Hello everybody! Today, I've started with Yahoo Query Language. I would use it to retrive stocks details, so I'm talking about Yahoo Finance. I think there is a bug on this language. • collection_select not working as expected

  First time I've come to use collection_select in a project and I've hit a wall with it. A Profile has_one Team, Team has_many Profile. In my view for editing profiles I have this. <td><%= f.collection_select(:team_id, @team, :id, :title) %></td> Which populates the drop down with titles of teams as expected. The couple of examples I have read seem to use it in a very similar way. I can't figure out when the profile is saved why it isn't populating the team_id field in my DB. In the development log the team_id is being passed. Processing ProfilesController#update (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-03-28 22:49:16) [PUT] Parameters: {"commit"=>"Update", "profile"=>{"dob(1i)"=>"2010", "second_name"=>"", "dob(2i)"=>"3", "role"=>"", "dob(3i)"=>"28", "project"=>"", "specialties"=>"", "about"=>"", "team_id"=>"1", "status"=>"", "first_name"=>""}, "authenticity_token"=>"sdTiFPGj9JCO3OEge5EGNGxZbQSsq9ME5LP342EBjyc=", "id"=>"3"} The update controller is the standard scaffold one, this has worked fine for all other additions to the profile model I'd made previously. • How to call functions inside a C dll which take pointers as arguments from C#

  Hi people, this is my first post here! I'm trying to make a windows forms program using C# which will use a precompiled C library. It will access a smart card and provide output from it. For the library, I have a .dll, .lib and .h and no source. In the .h file there are several structs defined. Most interesting functions of the .dll expect pointers to allocated structs as arguments. I've been calling functions inside the .dll like this: For example function EID_API int WINAPI EidStartup(int nApiVersion); would be called like this [DllImport("CelikApi.dll")]//the name of the .dll public static extern int EidStartup(int nApiVersion); Now my problem is that I can't find equivalent of C's pointers which point to dynamically allocated structures in memory in C#, so I don't know what to pass as argument to functions which take C pointers. I don't have much experience in C#, but to me its use looked as the easiest way of making the program I need. I tried with C++, but Visual Studio 2010 doesn't have IntelliSense for C++/CLR. If you can point me to something better, feel free to do so.

• How do I use InputType=numberDecimal with the "phone" soft keypad?

  For an EditText box, the user should only be entering valid numbers, so I am using android:inputType="numberDecimal". Unfortunately, the soft keyboard that Android brings up has numbers only along the top row, while the next three rows have various other symbols (dollar sign, percent sign, exclamation mark, space, etc). Since the numberDecimal only accepts numbers 0-9, negative sign, and decimal point, it would make more sense to use the "phone" soft keyboard (0-9 in a 3x3 grid, plus some other symbols). This would make the buttons larger and easier to hit (since it's a 4x4 grid rather than a 10x4 grid in the same screen area). Unfortunately, using android:inputType="phone" allows non-numeric characters such as parentheses I have attempted to use android:inputType="numberDecimal|phone", but the numberDecimal aspect of the bit flag seems to be ignored. I have also tried using android:inputType="phone" in combination with android:digits="0123456789-.", but that still allows multiple negative signs or decimal points (inputType="number" has really good error checking for things like that, and won't let the user even type it in). I have also tried using android:inputType="phone" in the xml layout file, while using a DigitsKeyListener in the java code, but then that just uses the default number soft keyboard (the one that has numbers only along top row) (it appears to set InputType.TYPE_CLASS_NUMBER, which voids the InputType.TYPE_CLASS_PHONE set by the xml layout). Writing a custom IME wouldn't work, since the user would have to select the IME as a global option outside the app. Is there any way to use the "phone" style soft keyboard while also using the "number" restrictions on what is entered?

• css: make background repeat-y with growing child content?

  I Have a three column layout. The center div is a container which holds all of my content. The outer columns is just a .png that fades into the body's background (left and right respectively). I want the .png to repeat-y to grow with the center container's content. It will only print the image once, and ignores the repeat-y. If I specify a height to the outside columns, it will print, but only to the specified height. I tried height: 100%, which does not work. There will be more than one room in each room type(i.e. 5 Rooms in type A, 10 rooms in Type B etc) and we have to query the db to find only those hotels in which there is atleast one room free in atleast one type. • Apache proxy to Lighttpd: changing $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] in php

  I have a WordPress blog running on lighttpd-1.4.19, listening on at www00:81. On the same host, apache-2.2.11 listens on port 80, which creates a proxy connection from http://blog.mydomain.org:80 to http://blog.mydomain.org:81. The Apache virtualhost looks as follows: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName blog.mydomain.org ProxyRequests Off <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass / http://blog.mydomain.org:81/ ProxyPassReverse / http://blog.mydomain.org:81/ </VirtualHost> Using debug.log-request-handling = "enable" I get the following log entry when I browse http://blog.mydomain.org:80 (notice the Host headers): 2010-05-10 08:47:14: (request.c.294) fd: 6 request-len: 853 GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: blog.mydomain.org:81 [...] 2010-05-10 08:47:15: (request.c.294) fd: 8 request-len: 754 GET /wp-content/uploads/2010/01/image.gif?w=280 HTTP/1.1 Host: www00:81 My problem: as far as I know, the PHP environment variable $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] is set to that Host header variable. Unfortunately, WordPress uses that variable in their system to create URLs to pictures on the blog. These URLs won't be accessible behind a firewall of course. How can I force the host header to be blog.mydomain.org instead of blog.mydomain.org:81, respectively www00:81? I already added set server.name = "blog.mydomain.org" to my lighttpd.conf, but this didn't work. Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you.

• Overlapping 2 Flash objects and controlling z-index

  I have two Flash objects on a webpage (call them A and B), and they overlap so one partially obscures the other. I don't seem to have any control over the z-index, to force B in front of A. Whatever I try, A always 'wins' and stays on the top! I have read many people's posts about problem with getting HTML to show over the top of Flash...but nothing about when your two overlapping items are both Flash objects. I have tried various combinations of wmode=opaque/transparent/window I have tried CSS position:absolute/relative and z-index:0/999 I have tried placing the HTML sections in a different order The problem is the same in IE6 and Firefox 2.0 I do not want to use jQuery in this case In my particular situation B must have position:absolute and wmode=transparent, and sit above A. A needs relative positioning and transparency is not required. However, I have been testing without these restrictions, and I still have no control over the overlap. Are some SWFs (ours are adverts sent by clients) created in such a way as to override any code control of z-index? Thanks for any advice you can give.

• Make JFace Window blink in taskbar or get users attention?

  Hi folks I wonder someone has any idea how to solve this: In my Java Eclipse plugin there are some processes which take some time. Therefore the user might minimize the window and let the process run in the background. Now, when the process is finished, I can force the window to come to the top again, but that is a no-no in usability. I'd rather want the process to blink in the taskbar instead. Is there any way to achieve this? I had a look at the org.eclipse.jface.window but could'nt find anything like that, same goes for the SWT documentation... Another thing which came to my mind - as people are using this app on mac os x and linux as well, is there a platform independant solution, which will inform the user that the process has finished but without bringing the window to the top? Any ideas are highly welcome! Edit: I found out that on windows the user can adjust whether he would like to enable a force to foreground or not. If that option is disabled, the task will just blink in the taskbar... Here's a good read on that... If anyone maybe knows about some platform independant way of achieving this kind of behaviour, please share your knowledge with me!

  I create a custom view in cocoa touch that is superclassed by UIView and in my main controller I initialize it and then add it as a subview to the main view, but when I add it to the main view it calls my initializer method again and causes an infinite loop. Am I going about creating my custom view wrong? • Why is Delphi unable to infer the type for a parameter TEnumerable<T>?

  Consider the following declaration of a generic utility class in Delphi 2010: TEnumerableUtils = class public class function InferenceTest<T>(Param: T): T; class function Count<T>(Enumerable: TEnumerable<T>): Integer; overload; class function Count<T>(Enumerable: TEnumerable<T>; Filter: TPredicate<T>): Integer; overload; end; Somehow the compiler type inference seems to have problems here: var I: Integer; L: TList<Integer>; begin TEnumerableUtils.InferenceTest(I); // no problem here TEnumerableUtils.Count(L); // does not compile: E2250 There is no overloaded version of 'Count' that can be called with these arguments TEnumerableUtils.Count<Integer>(L); // compiles fine end; The first call works as expected and T is correctly inferred as Integer. The second call does not work, unless I also add <Integer -- then it works, as can be seen in the third call. Am I doing something wrong or is the type inference in Delphi just not supporting this (I don't think it is a problem in Java which is why expected it to work in Delphi, too).

• How should developers cope with so many GUI configuration combinations?

  These days, any decent Windows desktop application must perform well and look good under the following conditions: XP and Vista and Windows 7. 32 bit and 64 bit. With and without Themes. With and without Aero. At 96 and 120 and perhaps custom DPIs. One or more monitors (screens). Each OS has its own preferred font. Oh my! What is a lowly little Windows desktop application developer to do? :( I'm hoping to get a thread started with suggestions on how to deal with this GUI dilemma. First off, I'm on Delphi 7. a) Does Delphi 2010 bring anything new to the table to help with this situation? b) Should we pick an aftermarket component suite and rely on them to solve all these problems? c) Should we go with an aftermarket skinning engine? d) Perhaps a more HTML-type GUI is the way to go. Can we make a relatively complex GUI app with HTML that doesn't require using a browser? (prefer to keep it form based) e) Should we just knuckle down and code through each one of these scenarios and quit bitching about it? f) And finally, how in the world are we supposed to test all these conditions?
