  We are using inkscape to convert SVG images uploaded to our server via a web form. For this inkscape offers a batch mode via the -z option, but this batch mode has a flaw: When inkscape is run by the apache user, it breaks saying $ inkscape -z -W drawing.svg X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. The application 'inkscape' lost its connection to the display localhost:11.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. If you do the same as a normal user you also get errors: Xlib: connection to "localhost:11.0" refused by server Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 data did not match (inkscape:24050): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_list_devices: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed 301.27942 But at least inkscape gives the correct answer (here the number stating the width of the image). Does somebody know how to make this also work for the apache user? Does it make sense to authorize apache to use X (if so how)? In any case it doesn't feel like the right solution...

• Building an SSL server farm

  I'm interested in building the the architecture in the article referenced below. I currently have a modestly-priced layer-4 load balancer and my application servers are the SSL endpoints. I want to put an SSL server farm in between my load balancer and my app servers. Then I will put another inexpensive load balancer between the SSL farm and my app servers, to do layer-7 routing. My web application has a fairly high amount of consumer traffic, that 6 servers can handle at about 50% capacity. Additionally, I have infrastructure traffic that is several orders of magnitude heavier than my consumer traffic. This is data coming in from all over the world that must integrate with my web application in real time. In total I have 18 app servers to handle all the traffic, plus 6 database servers. I will be adding 6 more app servers over the next 2 weeks and another 6 the 2 weeks after that. Conservatively, I estimate I will need to scale to 120 servers by the end of the year. My motivation right now is to separate the consumer traffic from the infrastructure traffic. The consumer traffic is higher priority than the infrastructure traffic and I cannot allow a stampede on the infrastructure side to take down my consumer-facing servers. Having a website that is always up is the top priority. However if there is a failure in one of the consumer app servers, I want to route that traffic to the servers designated for infrastructure traffic. The complication is that all the traffic is addressed using the same hostname and is nearly 100% https. The only way in my case to distinguish infrastructure from consumer traffic is by URL (poor architecture I inherited), so I need a layer 7 load balancer to be able to route. However for that to work I need either a fancy hardware-based SSL terminator or an SSL server farm as described above. Because my user base is rapidly scaling, I worry that if I go down the hardware path it will become very expensive very fast, especially since I will need 4 of everything for high availability (2 identical setups in 2 facilities). Meanwhile, the above diagram seems very flexible and more horizontally scalable. Has anyone built this before? Are there pre-built configurations? What considerations should I make and what software should I use (I've heard of people using apache with mod-ssl, nginx, and stunnel)? • Apache ProxyPass ignore static files

  Having an issue with Apache front server connecting to a Jetty application server.   Our situation We currently have many web applications that use LDAP for authentication. For this, we point the web application to one of our AD domain controllers using the LDAPS port (636). When we have to update the Domain Controller, this has caused us issues because one more web application could depend on any DC. What we want We would like to point our web applications to a cluster "virtual" IP. This cluster will consist of at least two servers (so that each cluster server could be rotated out and updated). The cluster servers would then proxy LDAPS connections to the DCs and be able to figure out which one is available. Questions For anyone that has had experience with this: What software did you use for the cluster? Any caveats? Or perhaps a completely different architecture to accomplish something similar?

  I have a task to research the possibilities of LDAP as a centralized Address Book. I have setup a openLDAP on debian 5.07. I managed to search the LDAP contacts from MS Outlook 2007 (with some drawbacks like Outlook cant recognize street and organization fields). My question is, is it possible ,& how, to sync data on LDAP server with applications that support LDAP? I could not find any data on this topic. EDIT: The point is, to have a centralized list of contacts that can be sync with various applications, for instance Outlook, Thunderbird, Phonebook on mobile phones...etc The Question is, Is it possible to transfer (update) data on a client application from LDAP database and viceversa? So not to search LDAP server data, but to download contact that are not available in the client application (Outlook) and upload data to LDAP if the contact is in (Outlook) and not in LDAP database and the other way around, in other words synchronize.

• How do I convert an animated GIF to a YouTube friendly video format?

  My son has made some animations with Pivot Stickfigure Animator which we'd like to upload to YouTube. The problem is Pivot saves as animated GIFs which I can't upload to YouTube. The Wikipedia article recommends using Windows Movie Maker to convert GIF to WMV, but unfortunately I'm using Windows 7 for which you can get the new Windows Live Movie Maker which doesn't seem to support GIFs. I Googled and found an article which said to use Beneton Movie GIF to convert animated GIF to AVI, but this seemed to rely on a 3rd Party application which wasn't installed and so failed. Installing the missing application - pjBmp2Avi - by hand and adding it to the path still didn't allow Beneton to do the conversion. I hoped FFmpeg might do the trick but this only outputs to animated GIFs, it won't read from then. Further Googling found lots of applications with 30 day trials and so on but I was hoping for something free. So any suggestions on how I can convert an animated GIF to a movie file on Windows using free (as in beer) software?

  I've tried FuzzyFinder, Command-T, and Ctrl-P (which is my finder of choice right now), but none hold a candle to Sublime Text 2. For example, I want to type: Head.php and have it find, among others: app/code/core/Mage/Page/Block/Html/Head.php Currently in Ctrl-P, which has otherwise served me better than Command-T, searching for Head.php gives me these first: downloader/lib/Mage/Connect/Command/Config_Header.php app/code/local/Namespace/Modals/Helper/Reader.php app/code/core/Mage/XMLConnect/Helper/Ipad.php My file is nowhere to be found (and I've never opened any of the above files), so I have to type this instead: pagehtmlhead.php Is there any utility that does smarter scoring/matching?

  I've written a web application for which the user interface is in Dutch. I use the system's date and time routines to format date strings in the application. However, the date strings that the system formats are in English but I want them in Dutch, so I need to set the system's locale. How do I do that on Debian? I tried setting LC_ALL=nl_NL but it doesn't seem to have any effect: $ date Sat Aug 15 14:31:31 UTC 2009 $ LC_ALL=nl_NL date Sat Aug 15 14:31:36 UTC 2009 I remember that setting LC_ALL on my Ubuntu desktop system works fine. Do I need to install extra packages to make this work, or am I doing it entirely wrong?

  I am running a basic iredmail install with amavis, postfix, dovecot. I want to use the declaimer feature to automatically append a disclaimer (in our case a signature). The reasoning for this is that clients (ipad, outlook, etc) don’t have to be configured with signature settings, and that we have corporate control over the actual signatures that are posted. Instead of: '[email protected]' => 'boss.domain.com.txt' I am trying to get to %mailbox + ‘@’ + %domain => %mailbox + “.” + %domain + ‘.txt’ This way we can simply use a script to generate the .txt / .htm signature files using just mysql / php. I've Goggled around, but I can find no references to Regular Expression like pattern matching in the Event Viewer. XPath has "contains", but if Event Viewer will support it, I cannot seem to figure out the syntax for invoking it.

• PHP file gets download instead of getting executed when browsed in any browser

  I have a phpinfo.php file which I am trying to run by browsing to it using browser but the browser downloads the file instead of executing it. phpinfo.php <?php phpinfo(); ?> I followed following this post, added following lines to my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and restarted apache but invain. phpinfo.php still gets downloaded. AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps Have I added these line to the correct file? On an openSuSE forum following was mentioned. I followed this too but still no success. Same problem is persisting. In case the browser wants to save your php files instead of displaying the content, you should enable php support in the /etc/apache2/mod_userdir.conf file. Add the following line to it, just after the line and restart the server. Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/php5.conf

• How to cache streaming video and silverlight with squid windows reverse proxy

  We have an intranet web server running a silverlight application (ACTUS media monitor if anyone cares to know). The server is used to record video and stream it to clients through a CDN solution. We want to put a reverse proxy in between the server and CDN provider in order to remove the office network bottleneck that's currently strangling us. I've set up SQUID for windows on a separate machine outside the network using squid BasicAccelerator configuration setting. It seems to work as far as the reverse proxy is concerned, requests are forwarded and the application is working but it doesn't seem to cache anything (no space is used on the drive where squid is installed). I found to explicit setting to turn caching on in squid, so i assume it's on by default. Perhaps I need some other trick to make the video and/or silverlight cacheable? Any help will be appreciated. Any info you need to help me will be provided at once. Thanks in advance!

• Hiding monitor from windows, working with it from my app only [closed]

  I need to use a monitor as a "private" device for my special application, I want to use it as a flashlight of a sort and draw special patterns on it in full screen. I don't want this monitor to be recognized by OS (Windows 7) as a monitor. I.e. user should not be able to move mouse to that monitor, or change its resolution, or run screensaver on it or whatever. But I want to be able to interact with it from my application. Monitor is plugged using an HDMI cable to a video card (most probably nVidia). What is the simplest way to do this? All solutions are appreciated, including purchasing additional adapters or simple video cards, or any other special devices.

• Bandwidth monitor for apache websites

  I am after a web application that will parse apache log files and record how much bandwidth the user has used. We have several virtual hosts that have custom log files and the I/O is recorded at the end of the logfile. However I can't find an application that will parse multiple log files and display a summary for each site. I believe awstats can do this but I want to be able to see all of my clients in one list. If there is something that integrates into cacti then that would be perfect.

  I want my mailserver to send mail from my local application "from" any user supplied email address "to" my own address, say "[email protected]". The MX records for "mysite.com" actually point to a different server, even though the outgoing mainserver is running with mydomain set as "mysite.com". Perhaps this is part of the problem? postfix is currently causing a SMTPRecipientsRefused error within the python application. Can anyone point me to what to change in the configuration?   I have a quickly growing web farm running IIS 7 (30+ servers). All servers are identical copies of each other and all servers are physical. We update the software about once a month, and in the current process, we follow the following steps: Disable server from pool on F5 load balancer. Disable HTTP Keep-alives in IIS so connections drop quickly. Change default directory of website to new folder containing new binaries. Test server Enable HTTP Keep-alives. Enable server in F5 pool. Move to server 2 Microsoft used to have Application Center which was abandoned a while ago. They have made a second attempt with the Web Farm Framework, but this adds as much QA time testing the release package as it saves in the deployment. Has anyone seen a commercial off the shelf application that is tailored for managing and deploying to large web farms? Thanks!

To be on the safe side, access should be provided by individual browser certificates (.p12) which are issued using a (fake) CA. Our users should be passing a complete register/login process and some of them will be granted administrative privileges within the application. That's why a preceding simple web-based authentication won't be sufficient. Atm, I am using a serverside shellscript to generate the certificates each time. Do you know about a small, web-based tool to simplify the process of generating / revoking those certificates? Maybe an overview of the CA's index.txt plus the option to revoke a cert and a link to download them directly?

  All tables are InnoDb. I would rather not use mysqldump, because the shard sizes will be about 200 GB (about 700 million rows), and that will take too long. I was hoping to just stop mysql for an hour, copy the data files to a new machine, and start back up. But you can't do this with InnoDb, as some data is in the shared tablespace. Even if I have the innodb_file_per_table option set. This is not a website, but a custom application, used by tens of thousands right now, so uptime and performance are important. I suppose I could add logic into my server application to allow for gradual rebalancing / moving of a shard. Does anyone have a better idea?

  Windows refugee here. On Windows you can easily copy the path and paste it elsewhere to get to the directory. Here is the situation on the Mac. I am in the Finder 20 folders down and I see the file I want. I go to my application and want to open it, so I pick Open Document from the File menu. However, it is exceedingly difficult and time-consuming to get to the place I want. Is there a way to copy the path in the finder and paste it in the File Open dialog of my application?

  I'm getting ready to deploy an application, and I'd like to make sure I'm using the latest and greatest tools. The plan is to host on EC2, as Heroku will be cost prohibitive for this application. In the recent past, I used Chef and the Opscode platform for building and managing the server infrastructure, then Capistrano for deploying. Is this still considered a best (or at least "good") practice? The Chef setup is great once done, but pretty laborious to set up. Likewise, Capistrano has been good to me over the past several years, but I thought I'd take some time to look around and seeing if there's been any landscape shifts that I missed.
