• A software to lock regions of a screen to prevent any windows from overlapping

  I've just installed nexus dock (a similar application like rocketdock), after playing with the preferences i've come across a very curious option (under position & behavior) that says: Prevent maximized windows from overlapping the dock. With it enabled, any application I maximize(and i do mean any) won't overlap the dock, it's really great. So i'm thinking perhaps there's a software that does this kind of feature which is really ideal for keeping my workspace really organized. I really hate repositioning and resizing my windows everytime. Of course there's always the manual way of doing these but it's just too much of a bother when someone from the family uses the computer. Do you know any software that does this? even a software that can just save/remember window positions would also be nice too.

  Hi there I'm trying to make a backup/copy of my virtual machine, it's installed in a Windows Server 2000 and I want to make some modifications/tests without changing the original one. The copy is to be used in Windows 7, what I'm trying to do is work/modify an application that communicates with a DB, this application is hosted on the VM, the DB too, and since I don't want to screw up the stable version I want to know how to copy the VM to my desktop pc to experiment without worries. Now, someone told me I might have problems with the IP 'cause the original will have the same IP, and if I change it, it won't work properly. Is this true? If it is indeed true, any suggestions??

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • How do I properly check if a program is a virus/trojan in VMware?

  How I should check if a program is a virus in VMware? Some programs I do need admin ability to install and it makes sense. But how do I know if it's doing more than I want? Some thoughts are: How many processes open when I launch the application What is added to the startup tab in msconfig If any services are added. That's pretty much all my ideas. Even if it does something I recognize I wouldn't know if it's necessary or not. What are some rule of thumb? -Edit- What about registries, can I use that information to help? Maybe have a scanner tell me if the application I just used has messed with sections (like bootup) it shouldn't have?

• How can I avoid heroku stopping my dyno?

  I build MVP's for clients regularly. Often I deploy on Heroku so they can see if the product works and demo it to prospects and investors. Then I have an application deployed on heroku, and it works like a charm, if not for one little thing. The app takes about 30 seconds to start up and heroku has the annoying habit of killing dyno's if they don't get traffic. My client is using the application for demo purposes now, so the load is extremely low and intermittent. I'm looking for a solution that is preferably: cost effective can be applied to multiple apps simultaneously What is the best way to avoid having the first request taking 30 seconds?

  I'm running an ASP.NET MVC 3 application on an IIS 7.5 server (my development server). When I set up my production server something goes wrong. Serving the same application binaries, using the same web.config file and connecting to the same database I get different results. Something must be wrong with my IIS configuration, but what? Here's an example I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1 and everything works I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1.1 works on my development server but not on my production server which gives the following error HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.   What is the best drive "cleaner" application, an application that deletes roaming, temp. and different useless caches. Something similar to CCleaner, but more powerful. I need it to delete more than the basic stuff. Like duplications of complex files or redundancies, (example... for every game there's the DirectX suite) without deleting program essential files, obviously. I know most of this has to do with my selection of these programs, but I haven't seen anything that lets me select types of files to delete, not just specific files.

  Hi all, I have one webserver and one Application server. Webserver1 have FreeBSD 8.1, Apache, MySQL and PHP. Application1 server have Centos 5.5, Apache, Mysql and PHP. Both server running fine independently. My webserver1 is hosting my company website www.azrim.com which running good. Besides I have 2 online application which requires me to host them as a subdomains. My questions is I want to make subdomains such as abc.azrim.com and xyz.azrim.com is accesscible from Application1 server. Can anyone pls help me on this. • Extremely slow startup of tomcat

  I have a tomcat 7 installation on a Solaris 10 server. My problem is that starting the server (or deploying a new war) is extremely slow. It usually take 30 - 60 minutes. The war application is a medium sized grails application so there are quite a a lot of files. The server is running other server applications as well but from my basic skills I don't see this as a problem. Can anyone give me some tips on how to analyse this? Settings in Tomcat, java, server, disc access or something else? I use these parameters to tomcat: CATALINA_OPTS="-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote=true -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -server -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:NewSize=256m -XX:MaxNewSize=256m -XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:+DisableExplicitGC" And I use a 32 bit java 1.6.

  Is there such as thing as a text-mode FTP client for Windows 7 ? By 'text-mode' I mean one that runs in a CMD.EXE window as opposed to a Windows GUI application. It also needs to be something along the lines of FileZilla, i.e. menu-driven as opposed to command-entry clients like NcFTP or indeed the built-in one. edit: To avoid confusion, what I mean is an application similar to that pictured (ZTreeWin File Manager), which runs from CMD.EXE and uses text characters for its UI, within the CMD.EXE window. The built-in FTP client, and things like NcFTP offer a prompt at which you issue commands. That's not what I'm looking for.

• One vs. many domain user accounts in a server farm

  We are in a migration process of a group of related computers (Intranet servers, SQL, application servers of one application) to a new domain. In the past we used one domain user account for every computer (web1, web2, appserver1, appserver2, sql1, sqlbackup ...) to access central Windows resources like network shares. Every computer also has a local user account with the same name. I am not sure if this is necessary, or if it would be easier to configure and maintain to use one domain user account. Are there key advantages / disadvantages of having one single user account vs. dedicated accounts per computer for this group of background servers? If I am not wrong, one advantage besides easier administration of the user account could be that moving installed applications and services around between the computers does not require a check of the access rights anymore. (Except where IP addresses or ports are used)

  I have 2 virtual hosts running on my Windows XP laptop. One is Ubuntu running inside vmware player. The other is MS virtual PC (so I can test with IE6 ). The Ubuntu virtual host is running my web application with apache. I can point my browser on my laptop at the Ubuntu IP and view my web app. I read this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/197792/how-to-connect-to-host-machine-from-within-virtual-pc-image and was able to get my Virtual PC to ping my physical machine using the loopback adapter. But I'm stuck on getting my Virtual PC to see my web application running in the Ubuntu vmware player host. I appreciate any suggestions.

• Windows 8 store freezes when searching for updates

  I'm running Windows 8 Pro (x64) on my home desktop. Everything is working well (very very differently, but well) except for the Store application. Several days ago, I got an update notification that listed 8 application updates. I hit the link to install the updates, but only six of them installed. Now I have Updates(2) showing in the store's notification area, and whenever I try to look for the updates the Store goes into "searching" mode (the circles/dots animation) and never finishes the search. Is there any way that I can reset the Store app? I have tried re-downloading it with no success.

When the free space is changed, a signal is emitted to allow the application having a chance to handle the change event. On Windows, it can be done by FindFirstChangeNotification with FILE_NOTIFY_CHANGE_SIZE. When the free space is changed, the HANDLE object returend by FindFirstChangeNotification gets signaled and let application do something. Is there any similar way to do that on Linux? Thanks.

  When I download a file from this link by Firefox its size is 74580 B, But when I download it by curl with exactly all of header was sent by Firefox its size is 79891 B (I copied all header from Firefox and paste it in curl command). what is the problem? • sharepoint 2007 access denied when accessing user profiles via ssp

  Guys I have a really strange problem in regards to sharepoint mysites today I go into user profiles and properties in order to setup a property all of a sudden I get access denied. First off I know that I'm logged in with the correct account after the access denied I decided to click on personalization services and permissions I than get An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Cannot complete this action. I'm not seeing anything in the server application logs either. So have any of you guys seen this before is there some kind of way to grant a user account the manage profiles right permission using stsadm. BTW all other fucntions of the ssp are working fine so my question is if the user profiles and my sites of a ssp tanks how do you repair that portion of the ssp? BTW the user accounts that I'm using are site collection owners and also they have full control at the web application level.   Hi, I need to setup an SVN repository for an iPhone / iPad app that I'm working on. It needs to be setup on a Windows server 2003 instance. We run VSS on it, but it doesn't really work all that well with XCode, so I'd like to migrate ASAP. The problem is, I'm a new graduate and this is the first time I'll be using a souce control software, so any tutorials on how to set one up, configure it to work correctly with Macs using XCode are greatly appreciated! Though it's not a priority, I'd also like to try to get my company to ditch VSS for SVN (Been reading this article yesterday - http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/08/source-control-anything-but-sourcesafe.html). • High CPU usage - symptoms moving from server to server after bouncing

  First off, I apologize if I didn't include enough information to properly troubleshoot this issue. This sort of thing isn't my specialty, so it is a learning process. If there's something I need to provide, please let me know and I'll be happy to do what I can. The images associated with my question are at the bottom of this post. We are dealing with a clustered environment of four WebLogic 9.2 Java application servers. The cluster utilizes a round-robin load algorithm. Other details include: Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04) BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.4.0-90_CR352234-91983-1.5.0_12-20071115-1605-linux-x86_64, compiled mode) Basically, I started looking at the servers' performance because our customers are seeing lots of lag at various times of the day. Our servers should easily handle the loads they are given, so it's not clear what's going on. Using HP Performance Manager, I generated some graphs that indicate that the CPU usage is completely out of whack. It seems that, at any given point, one or more of the servers has a CPU utilization of over 50%. I know this isn't particularly high, but I would say it is a red flag based on the CPU utilization of the other servers in the WebLogic cluster. Interesting things to note: The high CPU utilization was occurring only on server02 for several weeks. The server crashed (extremely rare; we are not sure if it's related to this) and upon starting it back up, the CPU utilization was normal on all 4 servers. We restarted all 4 managed servers and the application server (on server01) yesterday, on 2/28. As you can see, server03 and server04 picked up the behavior that was seen on server02 before. The CPU utilization is a Java process owned by the application user (appown). The number of transactions is consistent across all servers. It doesn't seem like any one server is actually handling more than another. If anyone has any ideas or can at least point me in the right direction, that would be great. • Strange behavior from Firefox and Paypal Plugin

  Ok, so I use the paypal plugin with firefox, which is really nice because you can generate single use credit-cards on the fly. However, recently it's been acting strange. Normally, when you use the plugin, a drop-down window open in firefox. However, at some point (I'm not sure exactly when it happened, because I thought it wasn't working for a while) the drop-down window started appearing in thunderbird. As in, I click on the plugin button in firefox, and the plugin window immediately opens in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird is closed, the plugin does not open at all. I can use it normally this way (everything works except the receipt-saving function). but the whole affair seems a little odd to me. Is there any reason that could cause things to be redirected from one mozilla-application-window to another mozilla-application-window? • Best practice for ONLY allowing MySQL access to a server?

  Here's the use case: I have a SaaS system that was built (dev environment) on a single box. I've moved everything to a cloud environment running Ubuntu 10.10. One server runs the application, the other runs the database. The basic idea is that the server that runs the database should only be accessible by the application and the administrator's machine, who both have correct RSA keys. My question: Would it be better practice to use a firewall to block access to ALL ports except MySQL, or skip firewall / iptables and just disable all other services / ports completely? Furthermore, should I run MySQL on a non-standard port? This database will hold quite sensitive information and I want to make sure I'm doing everything possible to properly safeguard it.
