• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! • How to install mod_wsgi 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.10

  I have a Python 3 web app so mod_wsgi < 3.1 doesn't cut it for me. However, on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation there doesn't seem to be a package for mod_wsgi 3.1. Is there an alternative repository that has a package for mod_wsgi 3.1? There's a new Ubuntu release not so long from now, will it contain mod_wsgi 3.1? Some other distro ready with mod_wsgi 3.1 to recommend? Maybe my best bet is to compile it myself? From a quick google it looks like I only need the python and apache dev packages installed. Thanks!

• Configuring IIS 7.5 to be FIPS 140.2 compliant

  I need to configure IIS 7.5 (Server 2008 R2) to be FIPS 140.2 compliant. Specifically, this involves disabling all SSL protocols other than TLS 1.0. I have set the following registry keys: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 2.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\PCT 1.0\Server to Enabled(DWORD) = 0 as per this KB, but SSL Labs' checker says "SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support" is enabled. (Everything other than that and TLS 1.0 is not available, so we're getting somewhere). It also says "FIPS ready - no" - presumably because SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support is still enabled. serversniff.net says SSL 2.0 is turned off, and doesn't say anything about SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support. Could this be an anomaly with SSL Labs' checker?

I anticipate (or hope for at least) a significant amount of traffic/bandwidth in the not-too-distant future. If I open a reseller, will I receive the same amount of server lag during busy hours that I do with a shared account? How significant is the profit margin with the reseller option? • Which Linux book for aspiring sysadmin?

  I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. I saw a Junior Sys Admin position open up recently but with the requisite 2-3 years experience, I may have to wait a little while longer before I'm ready to apply for such a position. Having said all that, I'll summarize my question: What is the ultimate Linux book for someone who is ok with the basic tasks of getting around in Linux but also wants to aim towards full Sys Admin status someday?   Consider a small-medium business' deployment of Exchange 2003. The question is around migrating to Exchange 2010. Here's a bit about the landscape: Current state is 50-100 users/mailboxes with the majority using Outlook 2007 OWA enabled desktop users are NOT running in Cached Exchange Mode laptops users ARE running in Cached Exchange Mode a single Exchange server with modest or reasonable specs for the day (3gz, multi-core, 4gb, Win 2003 32-bit) Questions Do you have any suggestions for the admin team regarding the upgrade path/steps from Exchange 2003 to 2010? • best practice with memcache/php - multi memcache nodes

  So I am working on a web app - that has to be built for scalability. It stores frequent MySQL querys into the cache. I have pretty much everything built and ready to go - but I am concerned on best practices on handling where to cache the data. I've talked to a few people and one of them suggested to split each key/value across all the memcache nodes. Meaning if i store the example: 'somekey','this is the value' it will be split across lets say 3 memcache servers. Is that a better way? or is memcache more built on a 1 to 1 relationship?. For example. store value on server A till it faults out - go to server B and store there. that is my current understanding from the research I have done and past experience working with memcache. Could someone please point me in the right direction in this and let me know which way is best or if I completely have this mixxed up. Thanks

• Converting gzip files to bzip2 efficiently

  I have a bunch of gzip files that I have to convert to bzip2 every now and then. Currently, I'm using a shell script that simply 'gunzip's each file and then 'bzip2's it. Though this works, it takes a lot of time to complete. Is it possible to make this process more efficient? I'm ready to take a dive and look into gunzip and bzip2's source codes if necessary, but I just want to be sure of the payoff. Is there any hope of improving the efficiency of the process?

• ProFTPD mod_tls is not loaded properly?

  The server is running CentOS 5 with DirectAdmin. • Google Chrome Automatic Page Load

  Google Chrome keeps loading the second page of certain websites which is helpful on sites like Netflix so that instead of clicking on a link for page 2, I can just continue scrolling down and it'll automatically have the next page ready for me. But on online clothing sites, it just gets backed up loading all the next pages, misplacing links and loading the next page so that it actually replaces the page I'm trying to view literally every millisecond. Considering clothing sites generally have upwards of 20 to 200 pages of clothing, this is really annoying since Chrome tries to load all of them. How do I turn off the automatic page load???

• Deploy virtual PC based on snapshot using Hyper-V

  I have a server with Hyper-V configured, it is easy to create a new virtual machine using the management tools, but it can take some time. I often see those hosts that say "We can have your server ready in 5 seconds". And I wonder how do they manage this? I would also like to deploy a full functional clean server in 5 seconds. So how is this done? Is it by first installing a clean server, then take a snapshot of that for later to deploy a new server based on that snapshot? I tried doing this, but I did not find any where to install a new virtual machine based on the snapshot. Anyone got any thoughts to share on this?

• How to recreate missing Team Foundation Server database?

  I've been trying out TFS 2010 Beta 2 on my local machine, or at least, had installed ready to do so. I had some issues with my MSSQL2008 server so I completely uninstalled and re-installed it and that sorted it. However, I'm now in limbo with TFS. I have the software installed, but it has none of the SQL databases installed that go with it. I had no data and am not precious about how to go about it. I figure completely uninstalling and re-installing might be an idea and will most likely fix it (repair didn't work). Is there a quicker way? Is there a command line utility that I can run, or a SQL script to recreate it all?

• How can I stop my laptop display from flickering when I connect my TV?

  I have a laptop with an HDMI output port running Vista, and an HDTV with HDMI input ports. The laptop is set to extend its desktop onto a second monitor. When I connect the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable, my laptop screen usually flickers rapidly. Most of the time it lasts for about 30 seconds, but sometimes it lasts for several minutes and once in a while it doesn't happen at all. It wouldn't be so bad except that the cursor moves back to the center of the laptop screen with each flicker, so I can't really do anything until the machine decides it's ready to calm down. I haven't been able to find any pattern at all for the causes or duration of the flickering. It doesn't seem to matter what programs the laptop is running when I connect it to the TV, whether I enable the extended display before or after I connect the TV or which HDMI port/cable I use. What could be causing this, and how can I make it go away?

  I want an NX or VNC session to start automatically when an Ubuntu server boots up - without a monitor connected - loading a certain user's desktop and keeping it loaded and ready until I log in via NX or VNC. How would one accomplish that? This code works via my terminal when I am logged in as the NX user, but not via root, and not in the init.d folder.   I have been attempting to install Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid Lynx) on my computer. I wasn't ready to take the pure-Linux plunge yet, so I reserved a partition on which I would install Ubuntu. I ran the installer and answered the 'minor' questions (keyboard layout, time zone, etc.), but had trouble when I reached the partitioning. I have several partitions, but Ubuntu only saw one of them, which was not the ext3 partition that I had set up. I tried deleting the partition in hope that the installer would find and utilize the empty space, but it only saw the original partition. I do not have an external hard drive to use, and I cannot clear any existing partitions. Am I running the installer incorrectly, or is there a more serious problem?

• Connecting to a secure, graphical, x session using a stateless thin client

I'd then like to connect to this server from a stateless thin client and use an x-session. This would occur mostly over local area networks, but also possibly over the internet. • Needs free/ opensource network monitoring tool for office LAN

  I know there must be a lot similar questions on SU. Let me explain my setup first. I have 4-5 PC, Laptops and Few Android Phones in my office. To get them on a network , I have a UTStarCom, WA3002G1 ADSL2+ router with a landline broadband connection which has nothing to do with any PC except the configuration settings. Broadband channel is always on, we need to switch on the router and the internet is ready for us. No Internet Connection sharing is done via any PC. I have a limited 20GB monthly plan, which is consumed in 10-20 days, depending upon the download requirements. So in the above case, i need some suggestions from you: How do I monitor my Internet Bandwidth along-with the connected systems, realtime? Any free opensource tool available? Tweaks / Changes in PC to save bandwidth as my ISP do not have any Unlimited plan. PC and Laptops are Windows XP and/Or windows 7. Either of the platform tools are welcome.

From what I have found, I need to use echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 3 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi, "3" being the SCSI ID which corresponds to sdb. Everything nice up to the point I execute the command and get -bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument. All the solutions point to using this method, but I am unable to. Any other method available? • I can't access phpmyadmin on ubuntu after successfull installation

  I have ready LAMP environment on my amazon Ec2 micro instance(Ubuntu). I have installed phpmyadmin distribution of ubuntu. selected apache2 as the server, then selected 'yes' for 'db-common-config' option. after its completed, I suppose to access it via http://server/phpmyadmin, right? But I can't access it. Is there any way to verify whether its been installed properly and running properly plz? Or do I have to do anything further? Thanks in advance.

• Qt, MSVC, and /Zc:wchar_t- == I want to blow up the world

  So Qt is compiled with /Zc:wchar_t- on windows. What this means is that instead of wchar_t being a typedef for some internal type (__wchar_t I think) it becomes a typedef for unsigned short. The really cool thing about this is that the default for MSVC is the opposite, which of course means that the libraries you're using are likely compiled with wchar_t being a different type than Qt's wchar_t. This doesn't become an issue of course until you try to use something like std::wstring in your code; especially when one or more libraries have functions that accept it as parameters. What effectively happens is that your code happily compiles but then fails to link because it's looking for definitions using std::wstring<unsigned short...> but they only contain definitions expecting std::wstring<__wchar_t...> (or whatever). So I did some web searching and ran into this link: http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-6345 Based on the statement by Thiago Macieira, "Sorry, we will not support building Qt like this," I've been worried that fixing Qt to work like everything else might cause some problem and have been trying to avoid it. We recompiled all of our support libraries with the /Zc:wchar_t- flag and have been fairly content with that until a couple days ago when we started trying to port over (we're in the process of switching from Wx to Qt) some serialization code. Because of how win32 works, and because Wx just wraps win32, we've been using std::wstring to represent string data with the intent of making our product as i18n ready as possible. We did some testing and Wx did not work with multibyte characters when trying to print special stuff (even not so special stuff like the degree symbol was an issue). I'm not so sure that Qt has this problem since QString isn't just a wrapper to the underlying _TCHAR type but is a Unicode monster of some sort. At any rate, the serialization library in boost has compiled parts. We've attempted to recompile boost with /Zc:wchar_t- but so far our attempts to tell bjam to do this have gone unheeded. We're at an impasse. From where I'm sitting I have three options: Recompile Qt and hope it works with /Zc:wchar_t. There's some evidence around the web that others have done this but I have no way of predicting what will happen. All attempts to ask Qt people on forums and such have gone unanswered. Hell, even in that very bug report someone asks why and it just sat there for a year. Keep fighting with bjam until it listens. Right now I've got someone under me doing that and I have more experience fighting with things to get what I want but I do have to admit to getting rather tired of it. I'm also concerned that I'll KEEP running into this issue just because Qt wants to be a c**t. Stop using wchar_t for anything. Unfortunately my i18n experience is pretty much 0 but it seems to me that I just need to find the right to/from function in QString (it has a BUNCH) to encode the Unicode into 8-bytes and visa-versa. UTF8 functions look promising but I really want to be sure that no data will be lost if someone from Zimbabfuckegypt starts writing in their own language and the documentation in QString frightens me a little into thinking that could happen. Of course, I could always run into some library that insists I use wchar_t and then I'm back to 1 or 2 but I rather doubt that would happen. So, what's my question... Which of these options is my best bet? Is Qt going to eventually cause me to gouge out my own eyes because I decided to compile it with /Zc:wchar_t anyway? What's the magic incantation to get boost to build with /Zc:wchar_t- and will THAT cause permanent mental damage? Can I get away with just using the standard 8-bit (well, 'common' anyway) character classes and be i18n compliant/ready? How do other Qt developers deal with this mess?
