• Installing my own XP VHD into Win 7.

  Hi, I am follwing instructions on this site to install my own XP VHD into Win 7 virtual PC (XP mode) http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php/2009/09/how-to-make-your-own-vhd-to-xp-mode-or-even-vista-mode-ready/ Problem is when I click on install Integration Components on the Tools menu the setup does not start. And I do not understand this message that comes up because I can't start VM at this point at all. It says "If setup does not run automatically, open the CD-rom drive inside the virtual machine and run setup" So what does the mean when i cant run the VM?? Malcolm

• Changed array composition, mdadm --detail still shows the old array size

  I have a machine with 8 disks. I installed it with my hoster's install automation (it's OVH, I don't have physical access to it). The machine installed correctly, but it made an array that I wanted to change. It created a raid5 array across 5/8 disks and I've changed it to raid10 across 8 disks. I've done this by first --stopping the old array and then --creating the new array. It warned me that a previous array was there, but I chose to continue. So it created the array, spent 10ish hours syncing it and now that it's ready I get this strange behavior: When I fdisk p on it, I see the correct size. But when I mdadm --detail it I see the old array's size even tho I get the new composition and level. When I try to pvcreate on it, i get the old size again for some reason. Did I have to do something else? Did I miss something?

• How to extract .raw backup of Windows to a partition?

  I have a backup of a Windows 7 drive (virtualbox install) made in .raw format and I want to extract it to my empty partition ready for Windows. Im using OSX. Any ideas? I have tried this: sudo dd if=/Volumes/DATA/bootcamp.raw of=/dev/disk0s6 Which works fine but when I reboot (im on a hackintosh so im using the Chameleon boot loader) I get the normal Chameleon boot menu but with an unknown GPT partition (thats what its called) and If I select that it says: Missing Operating system. Is the MBR broken on that partition?

  Trying to install MySQL onto the Windows XP machine. While going through the installation steps (in the "MySQL Server Instance Config. Wizard"), I get to a point where it the window reads: MySQL Server Instance Configuration (bold header) Choose the configuration for the server instance. Ready to execute... o Prepare configuration o Write configuration file o Start service o Apply security settings (this line is greyed out) Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. [ Back ] [ Execute ] [ Cancel ] So I press execute, and then a red X appears in the second step: Write configuration file and at the bottom, where it originally said: Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. It now says: The template configuration file cannot be found at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\my-template.cnf I'm unsure what it means, but I canceled the config wizard and looked in the directory that had been created (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0).   How do I do factory reset on an EPSON Stylus Photo 1290 printer? The printer is refusing to work. It seems to be in some error state. I've tried re-installing drivers etc, but the printer itself seems to run some diagnostic routine when I switch it on, but will not do anything else. It will not move the carousel ready for me to change the printer cartridge or any other Is there'e some sequence of button presses on the printer to do a factory reset? • harddrive problem (usb external)

  Hey guys I am using a Maxtor One Touch 3 given to my by my uncle. It is connected through USB2.0 When I plug it in, XP installs it and says "the device is ready to use". But it dosnt show up on my computer. It dosn't even show up in disk mangement. I then install Acronis Disk Director (which detects it) but marks it as offline. if i try to change it to online, nothing happens. (actually the lights on the HD blink - meaning communication and goes back into offline mode). The lights on the HD return to a solid which mean "working properly".   I was trying to play the game Warzone 2100 and the games runs fine, with nice speed, but the screen stays with a horizontal lines "flickering"... My PC have a integrated GeForce Go 6100 vga. Ok, not a powerfull vga, but it's not the end of the world to run a "simple" game like this (compared with another games that ask you send your eyes to purchase a expensive vga). So, I think that the problem can be of the configuration of my machine. I use it in first instance for programming jobs, so I underpay attention to video setup. • Visual Studio 2010 Graphic Artifacts

  This problem started happening to me once I installed SP1 onto my Windows 7 Ultimate install. When changing between tabs, or even just hovering my mouse over buttons, VS2010 starts artifacting. It's bad enough where I often times can't see any of the code I'm working on. Sometimes just the button the mouse is over will go black, and other times the entire code panel will turn a black and grey pattern. This problem only happens with Visual Studio 2010 (2008 works fine). The problem remained when I upgraded Visual Studio to SP1. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and the graphics drivers several times now, and I'm about ready to reinstall Windows 7, but I figured I'd ask for suggestions first. Google, as well as searching through Stack Exchange, did not turn up anything useful.

• Clone a Red Hat RAID as part of a disaster recovery plan

  I am looking for recommendations to clone a Red Hat mirrored raid to a single hard drive located in the same machine. The idea is if the servers hardware ever has an issue we have a similar hardware machine ready to go. All we would have to do is pop in the cloned drive. If the servers RAID ever failed we could just switch to the single drive to maintain uptime and restore the original configuration on the spare server with a backup. This is a restaurant and they are open 7 days a week. We do have time from 12:am to 9:00am to perform the necessary steps for a clone and we talking about under 10 Gigs of information. There is a database on the server. I have looked into Rsync and Clonezilla. But I am just not confident either is capable of completing the task I want. Looking for some suggestions and possibly a step by step if you could be so kind.

• Troubleshooting a slow database server with no load

  I'm getting ready to soft launch my website and I've run into some problems with what I think is being caused by my MySQL database running on Fedora. All websites run fine, just as I'd expect, but any pages that establish a database connection hang until the connection is established, and then bang, the site loads as it should. Ex. My landing page (http://www.thrusong.com) doesn't make a database connection and loads quickly. User profile pages (http://www.thrusong.com/john) make a database connection and load slowly, even though most of the data comes from memcached and the database currently has no load on it. This problem just came up yesterday when my router died and I began using my Pace 2Wire modem with built-in router. Before, my old router was set to handle everything. My ISP says the settings in the modem are correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• jQuery e.stopPropagation() - how to use without breaking dropbox functionality altogether?

  Short story: stopPropagation() prevents a dropdown menu from closing - which is good. But it also prevents the dropbox from opening next time around - which is bad. The PROBLEM arises when I want to to it all again, because the e.stopPropagation() has now disabled the dropdown alltogether - ie. when I press the dropdown menu, it doesn't open anymore! • Puppet exported resource naming

  I am working on setting up a collection of Splunk nodes to be deployed by Puppet. One of the steps in this process is importing the trusts to allow these nodes to automatically find each other. I've looked over several options and it appears that exported resources are the only ready way to go for this to work. The files I need to create are under /opt/splunk/etc/auth/distServerKeys//trusted.pem. The source for each of these files should be /opt/splunk/etc/auth/distServerKeys/trusted.pem, one per node. What syntax do I need to make this work? The samples I've looked at all appear to have the same source and destination file name.

I thought about building a linux-based virtual machine with an encrypted filesystem where the application code resides. The client has no root access, or direct access to the system at all. • What virtualization solution should I try next, after hitting problems w/ VMWare Player in dual-netw

  I have been using VMWare Player 2.5 for a while (Ubuntu guest on Vista host, 32-bit). VMWare had worked great until now but then I hit a brick wall: Due to some reorganization of my home network, the host machine now has to use a wireless connection to reach the Internet, while the printer, fileserver, and other important stuff are attached to a local gigabit hub. I have tried several tricks, such as editing the .vmx file, changing settings in vmnetcfg, etc, but I'm still unable to get the virtual Ubuntu box to connect each of the two virtual NICs to different networks (I did get it to recognize two NICs, but both DHCP'd onto the gigabit LAN). So, I'm ready to dump vmware for something with a little more low-level control of network settings. Virtualization is such a crowded space, I could spend months evaluating every product out there. I'm hoping for a shortcut... Can anyone recommend the best VM for my situation described above? Thanks

• Ubuntu from console/command-line/shell

  Earlies linux distros though required lot of manual work they were quite good to use from commandline. If the X-server didn't start or you just want a shell to work they all supported. Network was configured by init; sound was up and ready; new devices inserted would be configured and their configureation was placed in fstab. Also there were small scripts I found on many distros which on X used windows while on console they switched to ncurses. But now this all needs GUI with a desktop manager (KDE, GNOME) for the new paradigms :'-( require GUI (NetworkManger, hal etc.). So if on just command line you have to be root, looks like they believe only geeky admins need that, and need to edit config files or type big commands. Any way so that this is easy in Ubnubtu through shell again.

  Hi, I have a system that has to be formatted often because of the specific use of it (Use it in internet cafe). I have to install the drivers and apps each time. That is a time consuming and cumbersom task for me. I want to install windows, drivers, apps etc. once and create a backup of the entire C:\ drive, and keep it in a linux partition so that I can restore the OS with all the apps & drivers ready to go! I have ubuntu live CD with me and I have created a linux partition (ext4) in the HDD. My question is: How can I create an ISO image of the C:\ drive (ntfs disk) in Ubuntu and store it in the linux partition?

• Program can't start because dll is missing

  Any executable that I attempt to run on this laptop pops up an error stating The program can't start because LPK.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I have tried doing regsvr32 lpk.dll from within system32, but that returns the error The module "lpk.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "lpk.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again. I was able to copy the DLL file from a working computer, but I get the same issue. How would I go about registering this DLL? Or, alternatively, which program would I have to reinstall to get the DLL to work again? The system is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with Service Pack 1. I would really like not to reinstall the OS, but at this point, I'm about ready to.

• Ubuntu 10 installer stops after asking for username and password

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10. It's running fine, until I get to the step where it asks me to specify my name, computer name, user name and password. I have filled in all those fields and all of them display a green checkmark. However, the Forward button doesn't enable. The installer continues copying files, and when it's done it says Ready when you are... in the status bar. Still, Forward is disabled. Anyone know what the problem could be?

  My mother was nearly brought to tears because My Pictures is no longer under My Documents. Everything in Windows (7) works around My Pictures being in its own location, with "Libraries" and everything. Her Picasa wants to index My Pictures, but finds it empty. What's more is that Microsoft created, as a compatibility hack, a junction for anyone who hard-codes My Pictures as being a sub-folder of My Documents: <JUNCTION> My Pictures [C:\Users\Mom\Pictures] What's more is that there is Pictures ? My Pictures I'm about ready to tell her that her new computer is being taken away until she either accepts the changes, or dies. Suggestions?

• Django - Moving database from development to production servers

  I am working on a Django project with a MySQL backend. I'm curious about the best way to update a production server's database to reflect the changes made on the development server's database? When I develop now, I make some changes to a models.py file, then to a schemamigration using South. Sometimes I do several migrations across several apps within the main project folder before it's ready for the production database. This means that there are several migration files in the app/migrations/ folder created by South. So on the production server, how does one update the database to reflect all the changes made in development, without having any data loss?

• Looking for a Linux stream ripper that can be scheduled

  I have an MP3 stream I want to schedule a recording of. I can do it using wget to a file, its just a straight mp3 stream. However I'd like to use a command line stream ripper that will do a better job. Any one know of one? Update 1 WGET is grabbing whatever part of the stream it comes in on. This may not really be the start of a frame in the MP3 file. Also, wget is not really schedule ready. I experimented with starting it with a cron job, then killing it later, this produced a file that didn't really start and stop where I wanted.

• Activating Windows 7 generates error code 0xc004F061

  I got a new SSD and wanted to start over with Windows 7 on that disk. I did a clean install (my mistake) on the SSD and just went passed the activation part (left the key blank). Now that I have my system all setup, configured, files pulled back from backup, and ready to go, I'd like to activate Windows 7. However, I now get this error: The following failure occurred while trying to use the product key: Code: 0xC004F061 Description: The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations. Do I really need to wipe my system again, install Windows Vista, and then do the Windows 7 upgrade in order to use my upgrade key? Is there some kind of work around?

• Do I need to transfer Server license CALs to new Domain Controller during AD transition?

  I have an old Server 2003 domain controller I'm ready to decommission. I notice in Server 2003 there is a Licensing module under Administrative Tools that seems to manage and track user CAL's for the domain controller. I don't see this on my newly promoted Server 2008 domain controller, nor do I see any roles to add it. Does this need to be transferred to my new Server 2008 domain controller or will it all happen when the old server is decommissioned? I've already transferred all my Terminal Server licenses to the new server. Thank you!
