• WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation fails at "configuring database" step.

  Attempting to install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise system. I'm asking the setup to create a new database on one of our existing SQL Server 2005 systems. When the setup gets to the "configuring database" step it stops and throws "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." The two logs it suggests I look at are below. I'm not seeing any errors that mean anything to me. Any direction you can give will be greatly appreciated. • How to send messages between c++ .dll and C# app using named pipe?

  I'm making an injected .dll written in C++, and I want to communicate with a C# app using named pipes. Now, I am using the built in System.IO.Pipe .net classes in the C# app, and I'm using the regular functions in C++. I don't have much experience in C++ (Read: This is my first C++ code..), tho I'm experienced in C#. It seems that the connection with the server and the client is working, the only problem is the messaged aren't being send. I tried making the .dll the server, the C# app the server, making the pipe direction InOut (duplex) but none seems to work. Please help me, or guide me on how to use named pipes between C++ and C# app

• Using ember-resource with couchdb - how can i save my documents?

  I am implementing an application using ember.js and couchdb. I choose ember-resource as database access layer because it nicely supports nested JSON documents. Since couchdb uses the attribute _rev for optimistic locking in every document, this attribute has to be updated in my application after saving the data to the couchdb. My idea to implement this is to reload the data right after saving to the database and get the new _rev back with the rest of the document. Here is my code for this: // Since we use CouchDB, we have to make sure that we invalidate and re-fetch // every document right after saving it. Interestingly enough, the correct (updated) data is stored in the database and the wrong (old) data is in the memory model after the fetch, although the _rev attribut is correct (as well as all attributes of the main object). What just happened here??? Heartbeat on node04 stopped and told node03, which was the active node at the time. Somehow, node03 decided to start the cluster processes that were already running. (For the processes that are not critical, I always return a 0 from the startupscript so it does not stops the entire cluster when a non-essential part fails.) When starting ActiveMQ, it returns status 1 because it is already running. This fails the node and shuts everything down. As heartbeat is not running on the secondary node, it cannot failover to there. When I tried to run ha_takeover to restart the resources, absolutely nothing happened. Only after I restarted heartbeat on the primary node the resources could be started (after a delay of 2 minutes). These are my questions: Why does heartbeat on the primary node try to start the cluster processes again? Why did ha_takeover not work? What can I do to prevent this from happening?   I just finished install sharepoint 3.0 on a w2k3 enterprise server. It says installation successfully completed. • Heartbeat won't successfully start up resources from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps crossover cable on eth1 and have access to an IP camera LAN on eth0. Now, let's say that one node is down and the remaining functional node is booting after having been shut down. The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource from a cold boot. I have to manually restart heartbeat by sudo service heartbeat restart to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start, when only one server is present? • Does having multiple URIs mapping to the same resource help SEO?

  Let's say I have a site with products that have tags, if each resource is available at GET '/products/tagged/:tag_list/:product_permalink' Could that be better for SEO than just one permalink? For example a product tagged "tea" and "coffee" would be available at GET '/products/tagged/tea/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/tea/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/tea/:product_permalink' I would imagine that google would appreciate this because it gives multiple URIs with different levels of detail about the product, but I cant really be certain. Anyone have any direct knowledge on the topic? --EDIT-- As John Conde points, this is a horrible idea. What about having the links on my site link to a route such as GET '/products/tagged/:full_tag_list/:product_permalink', and then any time a user changes tags just have a HTTP moved permanently status to the new URL. Therefore duplicate URLs would be highly unlikely and mitigated by the proper response. Would this be better?

Array of Pairs [{ <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ...}] Array of Objects [<entity>,...] Array of Resources [<resource_uri>] Map of entities { <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ... } My problem is, I'm not sure if I should put these different representations of the sets at different URI's, give them slightly varied mime types, e.g. application/foomap+json or perhaps use an optional query parameter ?format=map, or resource /entities/map. The UI is going to hide this, this is for programmatic web service access only (which the "UI's JS will have to call).

• ASP.NET 2.0 app runs on Win 2003 in IIS 5 isolation mode but not in (default) IIS 6 mode

  The app uses DLLImport to call a legacy unmanaged dll. Let's call this dll Unmanaged.dll for the sake of this question. Unmanaged.dll has dependencies on 5 other legacy dll's. All of the legacy dll's are placed in the WebApp/bin/ directory of my ASP.NET application. When IIS is running in 5.0 isolation mode, the app works fine - calls to the legacy dll are processed without error. When IIS is running in the default 6.0 mode, the app is able to initiate the Unmanaged.dll (InitMe()), but dies during a later call to it (ProcessString()). I'm pulling my hair out here. I've moved the unmanaged dll's to various locations, tried all kinds of security settings and searched long and hard for a solution. Help! • TFS 2010 Build Custom Activity for Merging Assemblies

This is typically used for common libraries and tools that several other application need to reference. When the libraries grow in size over time, so does the number of assemblies. So all solutions that uses the common library must reference all the necessary assemblies that they need, and if we for example do a refactoring and extract some code into a new assembly, all the clients must update their references to reflect these changes, otherwise it won’t compile. To improve on this, we use a tool from Microsoft Research called ILMerge (Download from here). It can be used to merge several assemblies into one assembly that contains all types. If you haven’t used this tool before, you should check it out. Previously I have implemented this in builds using a simple batch file that contains the full command, something like this: "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\microsoft\ilmerge\ilmerge.exe" /target:library /attr:ClassLibrary1.bl.dll /out:MyNewLibrary.dll ClassLibrary1.dll ClassLibrar2.dll ClassLibrary3.dll This merges 3 assemblies (ClassLibrary1, 2 and 3) into a new assembly called MyNewLibrary.dll. It will copy the attributes (file version, product version etc..) from ClassLibrary1.dll, using the /attr switch. For more info on ILMerge command line tool, see the above link. This approach works, but requires a little bit too much knowledge for the developers creating builds, therefor I have implemented a custom activity that wraps the use of ILMerge. This makes it much simpler to setup a new build definition and have the build automatically do the merging. The usage of the activity is then implemented as part of the Library Build process template mentioned in the previous post. For this article I have just created a simple build process template that only performs the ILMerge operation.   Below is the code for the custom activity. In this case, it uses the TrackeMessage method for writing to the build log. You either need to remove the TrackMessage method calls, or implement this yourself (which is not very hard… ) The custom activity has the following input arguments: InputAssemblies A list with the (full) paths to the assemblies to merge OutputFile The name of the resulting merged assembly AttributeFile Which assembly to use as the template for the attribute of the merged assembly. This argument is optional and if left blank, the first assembly in the input list is used TargetKind Decides what type of assembly to create, can be either a dll or an exe Of course, there are more switches to the ILMerge.exe, and these can be exposed as input arguments as well if you need it. To show how the custom activity can be used, I have attached a build process template (see link at the top of this post) that merges the output of the projects being built (CommonLibrary.dll and CommonLibrary2.dll) into a merged assembly (NewLibrary.dll). The build process template has the following custom process parameters:   The Assemblies To Merge argument is passed into a FindMatchingFiles activity to located all assemblies that are located in the BinariesDirectory folder after the compilation has been performed by Team Build. Here is the complete sequence of activities that performs the merge operation. It is located at the end of the Try, Compile, Test and Associate… sequence: It splits the AssembliesToMerge parameter and appends the full path (using the BinariesDirectory variable) and then enumerates the matching files using the FindMatchingFiles activity. • Why Does Adding a UDF or Code Truncates the # of Resources in List?

  Go to the Primavera - Resource Assignment History subject area.  Go under Resources, General and add fields Resource Id, Resource Name and Current Flag. Because this is using a historical subject area with Type II slowly changing dimensions for Resources you may get multiple rows for each resource if there have been any changes on the resource.  You may see a few records with current flags = 0, and you will see a row with current flag = 1 for all resources. Because the Resource and Resource Codes are in different dimensions they must be joined through a common fact table. So if at anytime you are pulling data from different dimensions it will ALWAYS pass through the fact table in that subject areas. One rule is if there is no fact value related to that dimensional data then nothing will show. In this case if you have a list of 100 resources when you query just Resource Id, Resource Name and Current Flag but when you add a Resource Code the list drops to 60 it could be because those resources exist at a dictionary level but are not assigned to any activities and therefore have no facts.   I've read quite a few articles on the difference between POST and PUT and in when the two should be used. But there are still few things confusing me ( hopefully questions will make some sense ): 1) We should use PUT to create resources when we want clients to specify the URI of the newly created resources and we should use POST to create resources when we let service generate the URI of the newly created resources. a) Is it just by convention that POST create request doesn't contain an URI of the newly created resource or POST create request actually can't contain the URI of the newly created resource? b) PUT has idempotent semantics and thus can be safely used for absolute updates ( ie we send entire state of the resource to the server ), but not also for relative updates ( ie we send just changes to the resource state ), since that would violate its semantics. But I assume it's still possible for PUT to send relative updates to the server, it's just that in that case the PUT update won't be idempotent? 2) I've read somewhere that we should "use POST to append a resource to a collection identified by a service-generated URI". a) What exactly does that mean? That if URIs for the resources were generated by a server ( thus the resources were created via POST ), then ALL subsequent resources should also be created via POST? Thus, in such situation no resource should be created via PUT? b) If my assumption under a) is correct, could you elaborate why we shouldn't create some resources via POST and some via PUT ( assuming server already contains a collection of resources created via POST )? REPLY: 1) Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from your post and from the link you've posted, it seems: a) The Request-URI in POST is interpreted by server as the URI of the service. Thus, it could just as easily be interpreted as an URI of a newly created resource, if server code was written to recognize Request-URI as such b) Similarly, PUT is able to send relative updates, it's just that service code is usually written such that it will complain if PUT updates are relative. 2) Usually, create has fallen into the POST camp, because of the idea of "appending to a collection." It's become the way to append a resource to a list of resources. I don't quite understand the reasoning behind the idea of "appending to a collection" and why this idea prefers POST for create. Namely, if we create 10 resources via PUT, then server will contain a collection of 10 resources and if we then create another resource, then server will append this resource to that collection ( which will now contain 11 resources )?! • Python's Popen cleanup

  I wanted to use a python equivalent to piping some shell commands in perl. Something like the python version of open(PIPE, "command |"). I go to the subprocess module and try this: p = subprocess.Popen("zgrep thingiwant largefile", shell=True, stdout=subprocess.PIPE) This works for reading the output the same way I would in perl, but it doesn't clean itself up. When I exit the interpreter, I get grep: writing output: Broken pipe spewed all over stderr a few million times. I guess I had naively hoped all this would be taken care of for me, but that's not true. Calling terminate or kill on p doesn't seem to help. Look at the process table, I see that this kills the /bin/sh process, but leaves the child gzip in place to complain about the broken pipe. What's the right way to do this?

I want to be able to handle the button click event on the flex application. So when that button in the flash file is clicked, I want to perform an action in the parent flex application. • Does DataAdapter.Fill() close its connection when an Exception is thrown?

  Hi, I am using ADO.NET (.NET 1.1) in a legacy app. I know that DataAdapter.Fill() opens and closes connections if the connection hasn't been opened manually before it's given to the DataAdapter. My question: Does it also close the connection if the .Fill() causes an Exception? (due to SQL Server cannot be reached, or whatever). Does it leak a connection or does it have a built-in Finally-clause to make sure the connection is being closed. • AS3 Font embedding problem in ComboBox on a loaded movie clip

  Hi all, I have three movie clips, say, LoaderMC, ChildMC1, and ChildMC2. ChildMC1 has TLFTextfields in it with embedded fonts. ChildMC2 has both TLFTextfields as well as combo boxes.(with embedded fonts) When I compile those movieclips separately, I can view the combo box texts without any problem. If I load the ChildMC1 and ChildMC2 into the LoaderMC, the texts doesn't appear at all on both TLFtextfields and Combo Boxes. I tried embedding the fonts in the LoaderMC, then, TLFTextfields was able to show the texts but still the ComboBoxes couldn't display the text. If I don't embed the fonts in the combo box, I can able to view the texts. What could be the problem? I read an article which says, "No one has completely understood the font embedding in flash AS3, we just have to do trial and error, to get it done" I don't know how far it is true, but in my case it seems, I should agree! Please help me...

• Embedding a CMS in an MVC Web App

  I'm working on a website for searching for businesses, then displaying a listing page. We've been toying with the idea of letting the clients manage their listing page using an external CMS. I'm not sure how often this is done, or if it's even best practice. Ideally, we want to be able to setup a listing on our website, then give the clients access to an external CRM when they can manage their listing page. We then want to embed this custom page within our website, possibly using an iframe (which will come along with it's own set of complications). We'd like this integration to be as seamless as possible. I'd personally prefer it if we could directly inject the HTML into our own page and bypass an iframe all together, but I don't know of any CMS hosting services that provide the interface for such a thing. We've experimented a little with Squarespace, and we can get a fairly clean version of someone's page which would be well suited for an iframe. I'm wondering if anyone else has looked and integrating an external hosting CMS into a website (in this case, we're using ASP.NET MVC). We'd also want to automate the creation of accounts on this external CMS, so when a user signed up we could just point them to the website with some login details. I have no idea if anyone offers a service like this, but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We could host a service ourself too, but the aim is to have an external system that clients can use to manage their pages. Cheers, James

• Spring validator default message codes not resolving

  Hi all, I have a custom spring validator which has the following default message: public @interface FieldMatch { String message() default "au.com.xxx.website.FieldMatchValidation"; ... The problem I'm having is that the message code is not being resolved and <form:error...> is simply displaying the code rather than the message (Which is in a properties file which is being used by a ResourceBundleMessageSource). I've also tried this as String message() default "{au.com.xxx.website.FieldMatchValidation}"; Which causes the message source to crash with an exception indicating that it thinks that the "{}" brackets should contain a number because it thinks it's a parameter place holder. I think that the issue is that the message code is not being seen as a message code and therefore not resolved, but I cannot figure out why. Any suggestions?

• resource_controller get rid of setting flash notice?

  I am talking about rails resource_controller gem plugin here: Basically when I am doing json format, I would like to completely suppress the flash notice if possible, trying to call flash "" will fail, while calling flash[:notice]="" doesn't look really nice either. Is there some better approach?
