• How do I put these: @{$subset}, [@ext_subset], [$last_item] in PHP?

  I'm having trouble translating a subroutine from Perl to PHP (I'm new to Perl). The entire subroutine is as follows: sub find_all_subsets { if (1 == scalar (@_)) {return [@_]} else { my @all_subsets = () ; my $last_item = pop (@_) ; my @first_subsets = find_all_subsets (@_) ; foreach my $subset (@first_subsets) { push (@all_subsets, $subset) ; my @ext_subset = @{$subset} ; push (@ext_subset, $last_item) ; push (@all_subsets, [@ext_subset]) ; } push (@all_subsets, [$last_item]) ; return (@all_subsets) ; } } My problem is that I really don't quite understand the Perl syntax, so I'm having trouble writing these @{$subset}, [@ext_subset] and [$last_item] in PHP.   I have a really basic stupid easy question about sql... and I'll probably get -100 points... but here it goes anyway... Is there a way using sql 2008 Management Studio to look at the queries that hit the server? I'm trying to debug a program and I get messages like "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'AND'". Since the queries are being dynamically generated it's a hassle to figure out what is going to the server. Any help is appreciated!

• Accessing object's method within string

  Recently I was reading php documentation and found interesting note in string section: Functions, method calls, static class variables, and class constants inside {$} work since PHP 5. However, the value accessed will be interpreted as the name of a variable in the scope in which the string is defined. Using single curly braces ({}) will not work for accessing the return values of functions or methods or the values of class constants or static class variables. See www.php.net/manual/en/language.types.string.php It says, that I can't use curly syntax to get value returned by object's method call. Is it a mistake in manual or I misunderstood it, because I tried the following code and it works just fine: <?php class HelloWorld { public static function hello() { echo 'hello'; } } $a = new HelloWorld(); echo "{$a->hello()} world";

• Trouble with THTML file GDIPL2A.pas

  Running a project and was getting an error saying "Not enough actual parameters" The error is in "C:\Program Files\PBear\HTMLComponents\package\GDIPL2A.pas". The mistake pointed three times to "inherited Create;" lines 260,270 and 278 . In the file "GDIPL2A.pas".the Code is:- var err: integer; begin inherited Create; err := GdipCreateBitmapFromScan0(W, H, 0, PixelFormat32bppARGB, nil, fHandle); if err <> 0 then raise EGDIPlus.Create('Can''t create bitmap'); end; I was wondering why it would show an error in "THTML" files, WHICH ARE NOTHING BUT FILES FROM THE INSTALLATION of THTML.I did not even touch THTML files. • Visual C++ CreateThread Parameter Problem

  I have a class that contains a function that calls create thread, and needs to pass itself (this) as a parameter: DWORD threadId; HANDLE h = CreateThread( NULL, 0, runThread, this, 0, &threadId); My runThread definition is as follows: DWORD WINAPI runThread(LPVOID args) { Obj *t = (Obj*)args; t->funct(); return 0; } Unfortunately, the object t that I get in runThread() gets garbage. My Obj class has a function pointer attribute. Could that be the problem? class Obj{ void(*funct)(); and in the constructor: Obj(void(*f)()) { funct = f; } where is my mistake? The function pointer, the createThread itself, or type-casting? I tried whatever I could think of.

• C++ convert formatted string to a stream

  Hi All, I'm using VS2008 C++. As I understand it there is no way to pass something like this in a C++ stream : (without using external libraries) "number " << i <------ when i is an integer. So I was looking for a better way to do this, and I all I could come up with is create a string using : char fullstring = new char[10]; sprintf(fullString, "number %d", i); .... pass fullstring to the stream ..... delete[] fullString; I know it's stupid, but is there a better way of doing this?

• How are OpenGL programs debugged?

  I'm trying to find what is causing a segfault when glDrawArrays is called (as gdb says) in my simple program. When I use the OpenGl calls directly, the program runs fine. But when I wrap them up into two classes (under construction, of vao and vbo) the program segfaults. So, in my wrappers, I definitly disabled something or set something I'm not supposed to. My question is, how do I get some diagnostics that will help me pinpoint the source of the problem ? I'm looking for something similar to what glGetShaderiv does, but for vao and vbo s, that will tell me if I have..say.. unbound a buffer by mistake. [I'm not posting the code here, but if any of you want to donate some time by testing a segfaulting example, here is a tar.gz of the source . You'll need working libraries of sfml-2.0rc, glew and gcc=4.6 .]

• Charts don't show up when subreport is included in group header in pentaho reporting 3.9.1-GA

  There is an issue concerning in sub-reports. I created a bar chart in report header. The sub report(inline) is placed in the Details of main report. In the sub report, the bar chart is placed in the group header. I imported the required parameters to the sub reports from the main report and also i have a sub query for the sub report.The expected output is to show an updated bar chart within each (inner) group of main report. However, the chart is only displayed in the last group occurence, although the chart area itself is allotted in every expected case. Can any one say me, what mistake i did.

• Different characters take more/less data?

  I am working on a personal project and I'm wondering if certain characters take up more data in a text file than others. I need to choose a character to seperate items in my file, but if a 0 uses less bytes than a ! or something, it would be best to do that. I know all characters have an ASCII value, but would a lower ASCII value mean the character can be stored in fewer bytes? This might be an incredibly stupid question, but I don't see any information on the topic online so I came here to check. Thanks!

  I've been researching programming languages, in hopes of learning to program. Since I've heard a lot of good things about Ruby, I went ahead and purchased The Pragmatic guide to Ruby. I understand that there is a lot of hype about Ruby on Rails. Because ruby lets you program scripts, applications, and internet helped me to decide on learning Ruby vs other languages. Today I watched a talk about google go, and it's really caught my attention. Coincidently I stumbled on a talk about jruby. I've been under the impression that java applications are bloated an slow. However the speaker made a point of what is wrong with Ruby, and how Jruby diagnosed Ruby's shortcomings. All that said. I would like to hear peoples opinions on Jruby vs Ruby, and if Ruby is working on fixing these "short comings". Also, how do you, the programming community feel about "go" and if I'm making a mistake learning Ruby instead of go, or Jruby. Appreciate your advice and opinions Thanks,

• Localized database strings

  I have a small Grails application that has the following domain: class Meal { String name String description String allergyNote } For localization purposes the three strings should now be available in multiple languages. For example, while an English user would see name="Steak", a Spanish user should see name="Filete" in the output. I was thinking of doing the following: class Language { String isoCode String languageName } class TranslatedString { Language language String translation } but I am not sure how to link the Meals with the TranslatedStrings as it is used for three members, also I would like to use it for other classes (not just Meal) as well (or do I need to have separated tables, i.e. a MealNameTranslated, MealDescriptionTranslated, etc tables?). I know this is probably a stupid question, but I am a beginner and have not been able to figure this out :-(

• How to encode content to send them via jquery to a php file?

  I am trying to send a form to a php file via jquery. The problem is, that the content, which has to be sent to the php file, contains slashes (/) since there is bb code inside. So I tried the following: $.ajax( { type: "POST", url: "create.php", data: "content=" + encodeURIComponent(content), cache: false, success: function(message) { $("#somediv").html(message); } }); In the php file I use rawurldecode to decode the content and get my bb codes back which I can then transform into html. The problem is as soon as I put the encodeURIComponent() it will ouput: [object HTMLTextAreaElement] What does that mean, where is my mistake? Thanks for your help! phpheini

• What Android version to target?

  I'm about to write my first Android app. It's a fairly basic app that doesn't use any special features beyond being able to schedule notifications and read/write image files to the device's local storage. Reaching the broadest audience is my top priority. If I target Android 1.5, is the app guaranteed to run fine all the way up to ICS? Should I target Android 2.1, which seems to be the new baseline for common phones in use? Since the app is fairly basic, if I target ICS, would it run on versions going all the way back to 2.1? Maybe this is a stupid question.

• Simplifying CASE WHEN SQL statement

  Im trying to improve the following CASE statement to calculate the difference only once. I do it to avoid negative numbers: SELECT (CASE WHEN ((SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers)) > 0) THEN (SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers)) ELSE (0) END) This not only looks stupid, but also is not thread-safe. I tried the following, but I get an error message "Invalid column name 'diff'." SELECT (CASE WHEN ((SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers) as diff) > 0) THEN (diff) ELSE (0) END) How can this be simplified? Is there an in-built SQL function that already does this job? EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention that the select statement is inside of a view declaration, so I cant declare variables.

It will take many days and probably with mistake if I want to enter the data of this two column one-by-one from here to another file. Is there a fast way to do this? • Shoud a method that waits for a change of state be const?

  In a multithreaded scenario, I have a method like this: bool WaitForChange( time_duration WaitTime ) const; This method waits either until the state of the object has changed and returns true, or until the timeout times out (how do you say that?) and returns false. My intuition is, that const is to protect against unwanted side-effects of the method itself, so this is fine. But then again, some user might think that the state of the could not have changed, since the method is declared const. Is that user stupid, or should I make the method non-const in order to avoid confusion?

• read after lseek always return 0

  I'm having an issue reading byte in file after performing lseek long cur_position = lseek(fd, length * -1, SEEK_CUR ); // Rewind file reading by length bytes. printf("cur_position: %i\n", cur_position); int num_byte = read(fd, &byte, 1); printf("num_byte = %i\n", num_byte); With the initial variable length set to 34, the above code would produce cur_position 5 (so there are definitely at least 34 bytes after the lseek function returns), but the variable num_byte returned from function read always returns 0 even though there are still more bytes to read. Does anyone know the reason num_byte always return 0 or do I make mistake in the above code? Just for information, the above code was run on the following machine $ uname -srvpio Linux 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

• MYSQL accentuated characters é display as %E9

  Hi guys, I'm pushing data from as3 to MSQL through a little php script! My problem is that all my accentuated characters are displayed as weird iso characters. Example : é is displayed %E9 Obvisously the collation of my field is set to utf8_general_ci Even when I try to INSERT the data from a simple php script without as3, I get the same mistake. <?php mysql_connect("***", "***", "***") or die("Error :" .mysql_error()); mysql_select_db("***"); $query ="INSERT INTO test (message) values ('éèàïû')"; mysql_query($query) or die("Error updating DB"); ?> Any idea on what am I doing wrong and how I could fix that? In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) we have two button side by side. 1) Execute (!) and 2) Debug (>). It is quite confusing to a few developers. The debug button which looks like a play button encourages developers to click on the same thinking it will execute the code. Also developer with a Visual Studio background often click it because of their habit. However, Debug button is not the same as Execute button. In most of the cases developers want to click on Execute to run the query but by mistake they click on Debug and it wastes their valuable time. It is very easy to fix this. If developers are not frequently using a debug feature in SQL Server they should hide it from the toolbar itself.
