• Why does Ubuntu's Nautilus display a folder called "Examples" while the console displays "examples.desktop"

  These folders occur at /home/username. How does this name discrepancy arise? (Uppercase E versus lowercase e.) It seems to be a shortcut to /usr/share/example-content. How can I delete /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase without using the command line? One possible answer is to make a privileged Nautilus using something like these SUSE instructions (link below). Unfortunately "gnomesu nautilus" gives me a "gnomesu: no such file" message and "sudo nautilus" does not do anything when added to the properties of the Launcher. • Excel - export sheet to fixed-width text file?

  I know that Excel has functionality to import fixed-width text files where it presents a dialog that lets you choose where the begins and ends of fields are which it puts into columns. Does it also have functionality where, given an existing spreadsheet, you can export to a fixed-width text file? If so, how do I access this? I have tried using Save As and choosing Text File but it seems to only save as Tab-delimited which doesn't help me. This is Excel 2003 if it matters. Thanks, ~ Justin

  Thanks to Lifehacker I came across Sikuli which is described as: Sikuli is a visual technology to search and automate graphical user interfaces (GUI) using images (screenshots). The first release of Sikuli contains Sikuli Script, a visual scripting API for Jython, and Sikuli IDE, an integrated development environment for writing visual scripts with screenshots easily. Sikuli Script automates anything you see on the screen without internal API's support. You can programmatically control a web page, a desktop application running on Windows/Linux/Mac OS X, or even an iphone application running in an emulator. As this looks very promising, perhaps complementary to AutoHotKey I'm curious what scripts you guys will come up with. Especially since this program is portable and could solve "simple" Super User problems. I've tried {class = "firefox"} and properties = { tag = tags[1][2] } but those modified rules did not work either. What is the correct way to set up a rule to make firefox always open in a particular tag?

• Encode real-time dvb-s stream using mencoder

  My satellite receiver can stream the mpeg-2 video/audio output through lan. Using mencoder, I'm trying to build a script to encode and save the stream in real time with my Core2Duo 1.8 Ghz. Right now, I'm using a single pass, it produces good quality for a video rate of 800Kb/s, but takes more then 95% of CPU power, thus making a lot of frameskips is the computer is used while encoding. mencoder -o -vf lavcdeint -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:q=2:aq=2 -ovc x264 -ffourcc avc1 -x264encopts crf=25:me=hex:subq=9:frameref=2:nocabac:threads=auto -mc 3 So, I'm considering using a 2-pass encoding to alleviate the processor and record 100% of the stream. But I have no idea how to start. For the info: Standard Stream: mpeg-2 720*576 25fps HD Stream: 1920*1080 50fps (this is not my goal to record it, but it will be super cool if I could)

When the week changes for the same person, restart the total. • Aventail VPN connect on Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

  Hello, I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Recently, my company switched (for whatever odd reason) from Cisco VPN (that used to work fine) to Aventail VPN. I proceeded to install the Aventail VPN client on both the mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get the following page: http://grab.by/2WOA It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless and I was hoping fellow super users can help. Thanks.

• How to find and diagnose poorly-performing Firefox addins?

  I use a lot of addins in my Firefox. One of them is causing periodic freezes when watching video. Super annoying. Aside from doing a binary search of disabling addins to narrow down the problem (which would take a very long time due to frequency of the freezes), are there any other options? If the problem came from the native app, then I'd just load up a profiler and see where the time is going. But it's all in Javascript. Are there any tools that exist to help figure this out? Maybe some instrumentation I can throw on a few key source files in a local build to help diagnose the problem?

• Synergy setup broke on upgrade

  I had synergy setup working fine with version 1.3.7, however I got a new computer and decided to set it up as well. Because the setup I was working with was ubuntu (server - dual monitors) mac (client) and the new computer (replacing the mac) was windows, I ended up updating everything to 1.4.10. ______ ______ ______ | mac | ubu1 | ubu2 | |______|______|______| The problem is currently that dragging to the left of ubu1 causes the cursor on the mac to flicker briefly and then the cursor shows up at the bottom right corner of ubu2. • Why does my UIWebView not Allow User Interaction?

  Hi, I'm new to these forums so I apologize for my noobieness. I did as thorough a search as I could, but I couldn't find anyone else with this issue, applogise if this has been covered elsewhere. I've created a very simple example of my problem. I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't for the life of me figure out what. I'm creating a UIWebView and adding it to a custom view controller that inherits from UIViewController. When the app loads in the iPad simulator, the uiwebview loads the desired page, but the UIWebView is entirely unresponsive. The webview does not pan or scroll and none of the in page links can be clicked. However, if you change the orientation of the webview suddleny everything works. Thanks in advance for your help!! • Returning row values based on conditional formatting variables

  I'm not entirely sure how to properly explain this, but here we go... I'm trying to create a single budgeting document that allows me to manage purchasing and reconciliation for multiple projects. I would like to create separate sheets per project and have purchased items populate on a master sheet. Using conditional formatting, I've set one of the columns to display an item's status (waiting for approval, approved, ordered, received). I would like the contents of an entire row to populate in a new sheet table once the status is set to "Received." The sheet should update descendingly. I can't attach an image because I don't have a 10 reputation.. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

  Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.)   I want to get more combos in Emacs, so I tried to bind Alt, Super, Hyper via modmap to keys. I failed at it. So I tried to use xdotool. I started emacs -Q for clean experiment. Pressed C-hC-c and executed in other terminal: xdotool key --window 119537875 "meta+x" xdotool key --window 119537875 "alt+x" Both commands resulted in M-x runs the command execute-extended-command. So, Emacs do not differ between Alt and Meta. How can I fix it?

• FreeNX is very unresponsive compare to VNC when using over LAN

  I find FreeNX is quite unresponsive compare to VNC when using over LAN. I run Netbeans inside a Quad Core Server and remote desktop to it through both NX & VNC. For VNC, the screen will be nicely updated as I scroll the Netbean IDE For FreeNX, flickering happened and the mouse cursor become unresponsive as I tried to do the samething. Have anyone encountered the same? I don't like VNC because when VNC doesnot correctly understand the "Windows" key (interpreted as Super L instead of Mod) Is there any adjustment that can avoid that annoyance? I have tried both FreeNX-Server and NeatX-Server and both resulted in the same unresponsiveness.

• Where in the user profile are the Firefox search engine choices stored?

  We have a large number of user profiles that were created on Ubuntu 10.04 and they had access to Google as a choice in the search bar and Google was the provider for queries typed into the super bar. When logging into these same profiles from Mint 15 client machines, the Google search option does not exist for these users, as is the default for Mint. This setting seems to be user specific, but not a part of the FireFox profile? It seems if it were a part of the FF profile, it would "just work" on Mint for these profiles, so I suspect the configuration may be stored somewhere else in the user's profile? Could someone please tell me where in a user's profile the search engine options are set? We would like to set this once, and then drop this configuration into everyones profile so all of our users don't have to do this manually.

• Windows not showing version (or other resources) for files in tooltip

  Whenever I hover the mouse cursor over executable file types (.exe, .dll, etc.) in Windows Explorer, it only shows the Type, Size, and (Modified) Date of the file in the tooltip instead of the Company, Version, Description, etc. This used to work in Windows XP, but Windows 7 is showing me less information which is frustrating because I often need that information to be quickly and easily available (no, opening the Properties dialog or adding columns is not a solution). How can I get Explorer to show me all the relevant information for the files in the tooltip? (Bonus points for also showing it in the Preview pane at the bottom.)

  I have an excel sheet with three columns: date, person and percentage. I would like to put in a data validation that flags cells if the total for a given data/person combination do not equal 100%. Is that possible? In other words, in the custom formula of a data validation, I would like to make the following type of formula. =if(sum( cells with a (date = the date on this row, person = person on this row))=1) Is there a function which will return the cells in a range conditioned on certain values, or will sum the cells. Note that if it is not possible to do two cells, I have no issue adding a cell which combines both values for the purpose of effecting the lookup.

• Can I switch input methods while Caps Lock is being held down on Windows?

  On my Linux computer, my keyboard switches from English to Serbian when I hold the Caps Lock key. For example, to write c all I have to do is hold Caps Lock, and press the key where c is on the Serbian keyboard (in this case, they key is ; on the English keyboard). When I release Caps Lock, the keyboard "switches back" to English, so that if I press ; I get ; as desired. Super useful. Please note that I know how to change the keyboard layout. I want to use Caps Lock as a modifier key to change the language only while being held down! Is there a way to replicate this behavior on Windows 7 or Windows 8?

• Adjusting the column height of a Word 2007 Mail Merge on every page?

  I've been doing mail merges lately and we use labels that aren't listed in the default MS Word settings: I tried measuring them out and here is what I got: Despite measuring them they don't seem to fit, and I always end up having to adjust the heights so that they print correctly. When I do this and I have 24 pages or so of labels I have to adjust each page individually and it all gets a bit annoying. So I was wondering if anyone had the proper measurements (since mine didn't work) or if maybe someone knew how to adjust the height of the columns of every page in exactly the same way to avoid using more labels.

• How to prevent any files from being copied onto the Desktop?

  Gentlepeeps, Is there any solution to prevent copying of files onto the desktop? My folks and i currently have one super-common-comp in our place. And when all of the laptops are busy, we tend to do some quick surfing on this comp. I prefer to keep things freakishly organized in this comp and one thing i hate is having those off-shoot irritating forwarded downloads on my desktop. Is there some way to restrict files from being copied onto the desktop? I tried making the administrator user's desktop folder as read-only :P . That doesn't solve the problem. Any other ideas/software/solutions? cheers.

  After reading the quote below on the Casey Anthony trial (CNN) ,I am curious about where deleted files actually go on a hard drive, how they can be seen after being deleted, and to what extent the data can be recovered (fully, partially, etc). "Earlier in the trial, experts testified that someone conducted the keyword searches on a desktop computer in the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents. The searches were found in a portion of the computer's hard drive that indicated they had been deleted, Detective Sandra Osborne of the Orange County Sheriff's Office testified Wednesday in Anthony's capital murder trial." I know some of the questions here on Super User address third party software that can used for this kind of thing, but I'm more interested in how this data can be seen after deletion, where it resides on the hard drive, etc. I find the whole topic intriguing, so any additional insight is welcome.

• How to track $HOME with git

  Hello, I would like to track my $HOME dir with git. I've got many other git repos in other subdirs (eg $HOME/projects/repo_1 and so on), which shouldn't be tracked, since they already are. I have found git-home-history but it appears from the archive that the project is no longer actively developed. What approach do you recommended ? Is ghh mature enough? I am on a Mac but I am interested in cross platform solutions, too. • Excel 2010: if( , , "") not treated the same as blank for pivot table group by date

  I'm trying to group by date in an Excel 2010 pivot table. The column with dates (i.e., the one want to group by), should be the latest date of 2 other columns if neither is null, or blank. i.e., with a formula like: =IF(AND(A4 <> "", B4 <> ""), MAX(A4,B4), "") Normally, this ""in the IF() formula acts the same as an empty cell. In this case, it is preventing me from grouping by date in the Pivot Table. If I filter the date column by (Blanks), then clear the contents of all those cells, then the pivot table does group by date ok. i.e., "" is not being treated the same as an empty cell.

• Internal USB A Female to motherboard 4-pin that mounts internally

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this but that is physically mountable internally rather than on a cable? I'm planning on building a super low profile "gateway" pc that is dedicated to handling internet traffic in my home. I have a great 1U rackmountable chassis for an ITX motherboard, but I need the hard drive real estate for the additional NIC required to run a gateway (one onboard and one PCI). So the plan is to use a small 8GB USB Jump Drive for the OS inside the box (as to not have one hanging out the back. And although it's racked, I still don't want the jump drive flopping around internally, so I want it fixed somehow. I have an alternative idea where by I use a flush mount zap strap saddle and a zip tie to hold it in place, but that seems kind of like a hack.

• Excel 2010 filter arrow not showing text values

  I have an odd problem on a tracker spreadsheet I use. All the columns have a filter, but when you click on the filter arrow it doesn't show you a breakdown of all the text values for that column. All it shows is the usual 'sort A to Z/Z to A', but the bottom half of the pop-up screen is blank, where normally you have a list of text values that you can further filter by putting a tick next to each. It only displays (Select All) which you can tick, but its pointless as the column has selected all text values and hasn't been further filtered, which is what I need to do.
