    I'm gathering specs to build a highly reliable file server, somewhat future proof for the next 3-5 years. The component I'm starting with is the motherboard. Are there motherboards that have been shown to support ECC RAM (and which particular models?) and also USB 3.0? I've read that there are such chipsets with ECC support, but motherboard manufacturers won't guarantee they work, or won't even offer the required BIOS options.

  • USB mouse shuts down the laptop!

    For the past two days, whenever I plug in my USB mouse (which has been working for a long time, previously) into the laptop, my computer restarts! I tried changing mice, but the same thing happens. I have 3 ports, usually, I try one port and the laser does not come on, then I try another one and the laser comes and and off, then I again take out and put it in any port and the damn thing just turns off the computer.   • Hooking up a multifunction printer via network and USB

    I have a Dell 2155CDN Multifunction printer that is hooked up through our network. But when using the scan feature, it is terribly slow, and I assume it has something to do with it scanning through the network port. Is it possible to leave the printer hooked up across the network, but also attach it to a computer via USB just for the scanner? Or would doing this confuse the printer not knowing which port to use for each feature?

  • Recommended USB 3.0 PCI/PCIX adapter for older Dell

    Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 adapter for my older Dell server? It does not have PCI express (PCIe) so I was looking for PCI or PCIX. I have been burned in the past installing "desktop" class drives on servers (i.e. blue screens under heavy load) so I would rather pay more to get something reliable. We are hoping to get better speed on our backups to an external drive, even 10% improvement would be worth it.

  • Lost data after removing USB stick...

    I foolishly removed my USB stick from a Windows XP machine seemingly without unmounting it (or whatever the Window equivalent is..). Anyway, on inserting the stick into my linux machine, the file I was working on shows up, but it is completely empty (0KB). Since I'm pretty much a Windows novice these days, I'd like to know if there is any temporary location where I will still be able to find this file, or is it now lost permanently?

I have a program that downloads podcast episodes for me. I would like these files to be automatically moved (or at least copied) to my mp3 player once I connect it to the computer.   • Can't Remove Logical Drive/Array from HP P400

    This is my first post here. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this matter. I'm trying to remove a logical drive (logical drive 2) and an array (array "B") from my Smart Array P400. The host is a DL580 G5 running 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.7 (Tikanga). I am unable to remove the array using either hpacucli or cpqacuxe. I believe it is because of "OS Status: LOCKED". The file system that lives on this array has been unmounted. I do not want to reboot the host. Is there some way to "release" this logical drive so I can remove the array? Note that I do not need to preserve the data on logical drive 2. I intend to physically remove the drives from the machine and replace them with larger drives. I'm using the cciss kernel module that ships with Red Hat 5.7.
