• Windows IIS test server setup

  hello everyone, I picked up a new server to do some testing and need of a little help in setting up my environment at home. Here is what I would like to do: The test server will be used to test new code and configurations for a SaaS product. I would like from my laptop to enter www.acme.com and have it hit the server. The server is connected to a wireless router. I have windows server 2008 with IIS running on an an IP of 192.168.1.4. What is the best way to set this up? I want to hit the test server for www.acme.com and not go out to the internet. Do i need to mess with the LMHosts file? Thanks for the help. Im sure its easy but have never done this before.

• How to attach a sample grabber to the playcap sdk sample

  I want to get access to a webcam's frame image data so I can composite it with some other data. The playcap sample in the windows sdk directshow folder can show you a window streaming the webcam, but doesn't demonstrate access to the bytes. Someone mentioned that I could use a samplegrabber filter attached to a null rendered to gain access to the frame data. Unfortunately I haven't the first clue how to do this. How can I modify the playcap sample to attach a sample grabber and access the frame bytes? visual studio 2008 c++

• IIS7 Modules - managed or native?

  Hi all, as the old ISAPI filters are going to die sooner or later, I want to rewrite an old ISAPI filter that was used in IIS 6 into a module for use in IIS 7. The module will be used globally, meaning it will be used within each site, on a Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5 installed, that will host several thousand web sites and managing about 50 application pools. My question now is if I should write that module in managed or unmanaged code? One of my concerns regarding managed code is the massive memory consumption due to the .NET framework overhead. I don't know how this would effect the server's performance. I already wrote modules in managed as well as in unmanaged code. So this is not the bothering my decision. But I would prefer to write the module in C# if there are no huge drawbacks. Any suggestions about that issue?

• Stopping Windows Mobile 6.5 tab reordering

  I have a C++ Visual Studio 2008 Windows Mobile 6.5 application that uses a tab control. I've noticed that depending on how careful you are with the stylus, when using the tab control you can accidentally re-order the tabs. It's difficult to do deliberately, but it's very easy to do when you're not trying. I assume this is a new "feature" of Windows Mobile 6.5 as it doesn't happen in Windows Mobile 6.1 with the same code. Is there a window style or something I can set that will lock the tab order such that people don't accidentally re-arrange them? Also, is there an MSDN page that describes this behavior and how it is supposed to work? I've looked, but have come up empty. Thanks, PaulH

• ASP.Net Web Site Project - Errors Not Caught at Compile time

  For the first time in my career, I'm working on an ASP.Net (v3.5) project that has been set up as a Visual Studio 2008/10 Web Site Project. I'm not keen on this way of working this way for various reasons but for the moment and until such time as the company sees the virtue in working in an environment with namespaces, designer and project files etc., I have to continue with the existing codebase. I've run into some odd issues since I began this but perhaps the oddest one of all is that althought VS lets me build the code, it doesn't reliably pick up compilation errors so these are not noticed until runtime. I know the website model allows dynamic/hot compilation when a request is made for a specific but I can't see why it wouldn't do this when I manually (F5) build/rebuild the project. Its immensely annoying as you can imagine and I can't find a workaround. Could any StackOverflow person help with suome suggestions to make things better?

  Is there anyway Encryption on an unidentified file can be broken(file in question: config file and log files from ardamax keylogger). These files date back all the way to 2008. I searched everywhere, nothing on slashdot, nothing on google. Ardamax Keyviewer? Should I just write to Ardamax? I am at a loss of what to do. I feel comprimised. Anyone managed to decrpyt files with Crypto-analysis?

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.

  Using Visual Studio 2008, c#, .net 2.0. I have a Windows Forms client application that contains a scheduling UI section, currently this is housed only in the London office with the standard datetime picker control, the selected time is saved in a UK database (GMT) and a London based server aapplication processes the schedules. There is a requirement to roll the client out to various global locations, Hong Kong, New York etc and allow them to setup schedules that run according to GMT time on the London server. I'll have a label on screen saying "note schedules are GMT" what I need is a good way to present a datetime picker that always shows and is in sync with the database server's GMT time regardless of where the client app is running globally. Suggestions on how to acheive this? thanks.

  Hi guys, I'm using AdventureWorks 2008 R2 database and added the BusinessEntity and Person tables to my EDMX. Then I changed the model in which the Person table inherits from the BusinessEntity table. As you may know these two tables have ModifiedDate and rowguid columns so the Person class should not have these properties because it inherits them from the BusinessEntity class. My question is, how can I modify the model to support inheritance and optimistic concurrency on both Person and BusinessEntity classes/tables on ModifiedDate property/column. PS. • Why does my Windows Form app timeout when repeatedly hitting IIS 7 externally?

  hey guys, I've got a very simple Windows Form app that hits an IIS 7 site about 2000 times in the space of a few seconds (using threads). When I run that app on the server itself, using either localhost or the ip address, everything is totally fine. However, when I run the app on my dev box, using the ip address, I get an error from the "GetResponse" method: The operation has timed out The App can definitely connect to the site, because it consistently either starts throwing the timeout error after 10 or so hits (no more than 11), or it throws the timeout error immediately. What's going on? It's hitting IIS 7 on a Windows Server 2008 VM (external box), Windows Firewall is OFF. My App is running locally on my dev box as the admin. cheers

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution that's currently consisting of three projects: A DataFactory project for Business Logic/Data Access. A Web project consisting of the actual user interface, pages, controls, etc. A Web.Core project consisting of utility classes, etc. The application requires consuming a web service. Normally I'd add the service reference to the Web project, but I'm not sure if this is best practice or not. The following options are open to me: Add the reference to the Web project. Add the reference to the Web.Core project, and create a wrapper method that Web will call to consume the web service. Add a new project called Web.Services, and copy step 2. This project is expected to increase in size so I'm open to any suggestions.

While generating code for the SQL Server 2008 I came to the point where I want to define some default values for some fields. how to define in the designer for a Created DateTime Field the DateTime.Now default value? - Error 54: Default value (DateTime.Now) is not valid for DateTime. The value must be in the form 'yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.fffZ' how to make for code generation a string Field unique. Like E-Mail or Username can exists only once in the table. I've search alot in the internet and also checked my books Pro Entity Framework 4.0 and Programming Entity Framework. But none of them seems to come up with the default value issue, or using sql commands as default values for database generation. Another thing is, how to prevent on database generation always from droping tables? Instead i want to append non existing fields and keep the data. Thanks for any suggestions.

  I am unable to access Sharepoint Central Administration. I installed MOSS 2007 successfully on Windows Server 2008 (IIS7 and SQL Server 2005), I launched the admin and got "Cannot connect to the configuration database" error. Application pool is using NetworkService account which has access to SQL Server. I can access the configuration databases through SQL Management Studio. SQL server is on the same machine.   I'm working with the fulltext search engine of MSSQL 2008 which expects a search string like this: ("keyword1" AND "keyword2*" OR "keyword3") My users are entering things like this: engine 2009 "san francisco" hotel december xyz stuff* "in miami" 1234 something or "something else" I'm trying to transform these into fulltext engine compatible strings like these: ("engine" AND "2009") ("san francisco" AND "hotel" AND "december" AND "xyz") ("stuff*" "in miami" "1234") ("something" OR "something else") I have a really difficult time with this, tried doing it using counting quotation marks, spaces and inserting etc. but my code looks like horrible for-and-if vomit.   In my VB.net apps i make use of Linq2SQL and Reportviewer with RDLC reports. With Visual Studio 2010 they upgraded this reportviewer component so you can use the newer RDL specification from 2008. Now I've a problem to show related objects. For example assume you provide an order to the datasource of the report and then you can show something like Fields!Customer.Value.Name where Customer is a related entity. • Do you have to install the REST starter kit in asp.net to access APIs?

  Hi, I'm currently trying to access a REST API for the first time using visual web developer 2008 express edition. Every article I have found says you have to install the WCF REST starter kit which is a .msi file, which would suggest that I have to install it on my machine and presumably our server too. My question is this. Is there a non installable version that I can use, e.g. just by dropping DLLs into the Bin directory and then using the classes contained. Or is there more to it than that and am I just getting very confused about how it works? Jon

• Odd results when searching for numbers using IXSSO.Query

  Hi, from classic asp on Windows 2008, using an IXSSO.Query, when searching for a string of numbers, for example 10000000001, I receive results that also include variations to this, like 10000000002 10000000003 and so on. If I change the first digit so the search string is 20000000001 I dont get anything. If I keep moving the last digit from my first example to the left, I keep getting hits until I reach the half way point when I get no results! So in other words 10000020000 will return results like in the first example but 10000200000 does not. This all sounds like to me that its doing a match on the first 6 characters and it ignores the rest... Here is relevant parts of the Set oQuery = Server.CreateObject("IXSSO.Query") oQuery.Catalog = SEARCH_CATALOG oQuery.Query = "@all " & searchstr Set oRS = oQuery.CreateRecordset("nonsequential") Anyone got any ideas and/or suggestions?   With .NET, I have "Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:30:00 PM" and I want "dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy h:m:s t", "6:09:01 PM" and want ""hh:mm:ss tt", "Fri 29 Aug" and want "ddd d MMM", and so on. It seems I should be able to use DateTimeFormatInfo in some way. I figured I can format the date with each pattern returned by GetAllDateTimePatterns, and when the original date string and the formated date string match then I have the format. Yet, I want to generate custom formats, not the standard formats. I want the format string. I do not want the date. I have both the DateTime value and the formatted string value for the date. I need <formatString> as in ToString(<formatString>).

  I went to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Minneapolis yesterday and was slightly surprised by how much they were trotting out SharePoint and improved SharePoint development in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint is something I've largely ignored over the years as a web developer and solution architect on a small development team. I was always under the impression that SharePoint was used mostly for intranets in large corporations, and that if you were developing for SharePoint, it meant that a corporate decision had been made to use it and you as a developer probably had few (if any) options. I realize this assumption is probably incorrect. So, what are the "cool" uses for SharePoint? What unique business problems have you solved using it? What could make a developer excited to be working on something for SharePoint?
