• RDLC item width is dynamic and causing extra pages to be generated (image included)?

  I'm trying to format an RDLC report file in Visual Studio 2008 and I am having a formatting issue. I have a list at the bottom that contains a matrix that expands horizontally to the right. That pink box is just to visualize the problem I'm having. When the report is rendered the matrix expands and instead of filling the pink box with the matrix is pushes the space in the pink box to the right resulting in an extra page when printing the reports. One solution would be to shrink the pink box to be the size of the matrix which I've done. But then when the matrix grows the fields at the top of the report get pushed to the right by the same amount as the growth of the matrix. Can someone please let me know what they think the solution would be? Thank you!

• How to control order of assignment for new identity column in mssql ?

  I have a table with CreateDate datetime field default(getdate()) that does not have any identity column. I would like to add identity(1,1) field that would reflect same order of existing records as CreateDate field (order by would give same results). How can I do that ? I guess if I create clustered key on CreateDate field and then add identity column it will work (not sure if it's guaranteed), is there a good/better way ? I am interested in sql 2005, but I guess the answer will be the same for sql 2008, sql 2000.

• Sequence Generators in T-SQL

  We have an Oracle application that uses a standard pattern to populate surrogate keys. We have a series of extrinsic rows (that have specific values for the surrogate keys) and other rows that have intrinsic values. We use the following Oracle trigger snippet to determine what to do with the Surrogate key on insert: 'IF :NEW.SurrogateKey IS NULL THEN SELECT SurrogateKey_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.SurrogateKey FROM DUAL; END IF;' If the supplied surrogate key is null then get a value from the nominated sequence, else pass the supplied surrogate key through to the row. I can't seem to find an easy way to do this is T-SQL. There are all sorts of approaches, but none of which use the notion of a sequence generator like Oracle and other SQL-92 compliant DBs do. Anybody know of a really efficient way to do this in SQL Server T-SQL? BTW we're using SQL Server 2008 if that's any help. TIA, Paolo

Here what i am doing in the code is, when they are creating new user i am getting a max id from DB and increasing the value to 1. So that they are getting same ID. so that i am facing concurrency in this situation. How to solve this problem. I need to display different numbers when the users click on NewUser. So I created one MVC application in visual studio and everything is working fine on localhost as a separate application. Now I want to host this MVC app also inside the website I have already deployed. I created a virtual directory(MVCDir) inside the default website in IIS 6.0. • ASP.NET cached aspx page & IIS logs

  Hi guys, Is there any way to find out if ASP.Net runtime has served a cached copy of ASPX page or actually went through the page life cycle? Here is my problem: I'm seeing many entries in my IIS log files that were served successfully (200 OK). I've a corresponding logging code (Log4Net API) in the Session_Start and Application_BeginRequest() events that is logging every request to my DB with more details. I'm not seeing any corresponding entries in my SQL DB for some cases that should have been created by Log4Net code. Are there any logs available to find out if a cached copy was served by .NET worker process? Moreover, if my logging code would throw an exception, won't that show up as 500 in IIS logs? The code is on Windows 2008 Server, IIS 7.

• Dynamic Database connection

  I have multiple client databases that I need to hit on the fly and I am having trouble getting the code I have to work. At first I was just storing a connection string in a clinet object in the db, pulling it out based on logged-in user, and passing it to linq data context constructor. This works fine in my development enviorment but is failing on the Winhost server I am using. It is running SQL 2008. I am getting a "The current configuration system does not support user scoped settings." error. Any help or guidance on this issue is greatly appreciated. Greg

  Hi all: As what seems to be some sort of penance for sins in a prior life, I have been tasked with maintaining some SSIS packages. (NO! NO BADMOUTHING SSIS!! BAD PROGRAMMMER! NO DOUGHNUT!). Anyhoo, I many of the packages have variables, defined in an outer container, which are used in multiple inner containers, in script tasks. What I want to do, is find out all the places in a package a variable being used; in other words, search for instances of variable usage in all tasks of a package. This would be a huge help, but I cannot for the life of me find out how this can be done in BIDS. (this is SSIS/BIDS 2008) Thanks for any help, YS

  I'm trying to make an windows application within Netbeans. When using Visual studio it is no problem to use files like tchar.h I have receaved a basic file structure containing those and I'm trying to get them to work on Netbeans IDE but it seems that Netbeans won't allow using files from Visual Studio. I have tried to add the tchar.h file and all other file it required (including some C++ core files) and commenting the errors written in those care files: #error ERROR: Use of C runtime library internal header file. But netbenas can't find the tchar.h file while being in same folder...

• Design Code Outside of an IDE (C#)?

  Does anyone design code outside of an IDE? I think that code design is great and all but the only place I find myself actually design code (besides in my head) is in the IDE itself. I generally think about it a little before hand but when I go to type it out, it is always in the IDE; no UML or anything like that. Now I think having UML of your code is really good because you are able to see a lot more of the code on one screen however the issue I have is that once I type it in UML, I then have to type the actual code and that is just a big duplicate for me. For those who work with C# and design code outside of Visual Studio (or at least outside Visual Studio's text editor), what tools do you use? Do those tools allow you to convert your design to actual skeleton code? It is also possible to convert code to the design (when you update the code and need an updated UML diagram or whatnot)?

• Silverlight Pixel Shader resource "not found"; what should the URI be?

  So I've written and compiled an HLSL pixel shader with Shazzam, placed the resulting .ps file in my project, and am trying to instantiate it. No matter what URI I put, Blend tells me that the resource can't be found whenever I try to view any xaml designer, and Visual Studio just shows me a blank page, both in design view and if I try to run the application. This is a Silverlight 4 SketchFlow project, in Blend 4 RC and Visual Studio 2010. I've tried both Resource and EmbeddedResource as the Build Action for the .ps file, neither make any difference (I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be set to Resource). I've tried the following URI formats: "ShaderFileName.ps" "/ShaderFileName.ps" "AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" "/AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" I also tried moving the shader file from the Screens assembly to the root assembly (that's how SketchFlow projects are created) and that didn't help either. Anyone have any thoughts?

• Checking COM Port Availability in C#

  Hello. My C# application populates a comboBox with the COM ports found on the system. I would like the mark the COM ports that are in use as such. I know that I can use try / catch blocks to attempt to open every COM port, but I was wondering if there is a more graceful way to do this. Perhaps using a WMI query? I am using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (.NET 2.0). Any thoughts or suggestions you may have would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi, I need to remove elements from the middle of a std::vector. So I tried: struct IsEven { bool operator()(int ele) { return ele % 2 == 0; } }; int elements[] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}; std::vector<int> ints(elements, elements+6); std::vector<int>::iterator it = std::remove_if(ints.begin() + 2, ints.begin() + 4, IsEven()); ints.erase(it, ints.end()); After this I would expect that the ints vector have: [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]. In the debugger of Visual studio 2008, after the std::remove_if line, the elements of ints are modified, I'm guessing I'm into some sort of undefined behaviour here. So, how do I remove elements from a Range of a vector?

• Linq to SQL Azure genrating Error "Specified cast is not valid."

  B"H I have an application that has been working for months using Linq to SQL connecting to a SQLExpress. I tried migrating it to SQL Azure. I copied the structure and data using the Sync Framework. I viewed the data in SQL Azure using SSMS 2008 R2 and it seams to be exactly what I have in my Sql Server. However when I try to use Linq to SQL against it I get an error "Specified cast is not valid." I seams to be happening any time I get child records. i.e. whenever I fill (the first time I access) an entity set. It seams to be happening after the data returns and when Linq tries to put it into the objects. remember, the application is working perfectly against sqlexpress, even when accessed across the internet or vpn.

• Change .NET Framework version of application pool to 3.5?

  I've installed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on web server (Server 2008 Enterprise), so running IIS 7.0. I want to change the version of .NET Framework used by an existing site. So I right-click on appropriate Application Pool and selected Edit Application Pool. The .NET Framework dropdown does not include an explicit entry for framework 3.5, but just 2.0.50727. Does anyone know off the top of their head--is this just because the version of the core RTL in 3.5 is still 2.0? Or do I need to do something additional to get IIS to see version 3.5? (Did try restarting IIS). Thanks!

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   hi there, I have developed a windows application using C# VS 2008 and Sql 2005 express, i have testes the application on my machine and it works fine, my machine is win32 bit, when i tried the application on windows 64bit it keeps giving me an error message on the start of the application,although i installed the sql express on that machine but should i install .NETframwork3.5sp1 64 bit also? , the target machine is widows 7 64bit, also is there a technology or a way to make the application work in the following sequence: 1- the CD is auto run 2- the setup checks for the installed prerequists and install any necessery one without the interference of the user. one last question,should i rebuild the application on an 64 bit machine to make it work on 64 bit machine? thankx

• Large ResultSet on postgresql query

  I'm running a query against a table in a postgresql database. The database is on a remote machine. The table has around 30 sub-tables using postgresql partitioning capability. The query will return a large result set, something around 1.8 million rows. In my code I use spring jdbc support, method JdbcTemplate.query, but my RowCallbackHandler is not being called. My best guess is that the postgresql jdbc driver (I use version 8.3-603.jdbc4) is accumulating the result in memory before calling my code. I thought the fetchSize configuration could control this, but I tried it and nothing changes. I did this as postgresql manual recomended. This query worked fine when I used Oracle XE. But I'm trying to migrate to postgresql because of the partitioning feature, which is not available in Oracle XE. • IDENTITY_INSERT is set to off error

  I have a MVC web application with a table in the model that I would like to add to. I have the primary key set along with the other data fields, but every time I try to add to the table, I get the following error: "Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'TABLE_NAME' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF." I'm not sure why this problem is coming up, I have the primary key set as the identity and it is also set to auto increment in the Visual Studio table designer. Is there any way I can adjust the IDENTITY_INSERT parameter in the table designer in Visual Studio?? Or is there some other issue that might be causing this.
