• Ruby Iconv works with irb and ruby debugger but not in a unit test

  I'm running Ruby 1.8.7 with Rails 2.3.5 on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. I've written a method that should take a string like this, "École À la Découverte" and output a file-system name like this "ecole_a_la_decouverte": (Iconv.new('US-ASCII//TRANSLIT', 'utf-8').iconv "École À la Découverte").gsub(/[^\w\s-\—]/,'').gsub(/[^\w]|[_]/,' ').split.join('_').downcase When I test this line in my code, the test always fails saying that "cole_la_dcouverte" is unequal to "ecole_a_la_decouverte". The odd thing is that if I insert a debugger line and use the debugger console the test passes. As well, running this line manually in irb seems to work. Does anyone know what's going on and why this test is failing? My only thought is that including the debugger or irb somehow adds more support for UTF-8 but I'm at a loss to figure out where to go next. Thanks in advance!

• linear interpolation on 8bit microcontroller

  I need to do a linear interpolation over time between two values on an 8 bit PIC microcontroller (Specifically 16F627A but that shouldn't matter) using PIC assembly language. Although I'm looking for an algorithm here as much as actual code. I need to take an 8 bit starting value, an 8 bit ending value and a position between the two (Currently represented as an 8 bit number 0-255 where 0 means the output should be the starting value and 255 means it should be the final value but that can change if there is a better way to represent this) and calculate the interpolated value. Now PIC doesn't have a divide instruction so I could code up a general purpose divide routine and effectivly calculate (B-A)/(x/255)+A at each step but I feel there is probably a much better way to do this on a microcontroller than the way I'd do it on a PC in c++ Has anyone got any suggestions for implementing this efficiently on this hardware?

  Hello StackOverflow community, Using Google App Engine, I wrote a keyToSha256() method within a model class (extending db.Model) : class Car(db.Model): def keyToSha256(self): keyhash = hashlib.sha256(str(self.key())).digest() return keyhash When displaying the output (ultimately within a Django template), I get garbled text, for example : ?????_??!`?I?!?;?QeqN??Al?'2 I was expecting something more in line with this : 9f86d081884c7d659a2feaa0c55ad015a3bf4f1b2b0b822cd15d6c15b0f00a08 Am I missing something important ? Despite reading several guides on ASCII, Unicode, utf-8 and the like, I think I'm still far from mastering the secrets of string encoding/decoding. After browsing StackOverflow and searching for insights via Google, I figured out I should ask the question here. Any idea ? Thanks !

  I'm trying to figure out which property of BoxComponentEvent will tell me if the generated OnMouseWheel event was a scroll-up or scroll-down event. I have output the values of all the properties BoxComponentEvent exposes; and all of them (with the exception of the coordinates at which the event took place) stay the same regardless. • Actual note duration from MIDI duration

  I'm currently implementing an application to perform some tasks on MIDI files, and my current problem is to output the notes I've read to a LilyPond file. I've merged note_on and note_off events to single notes object with absolute start and absolute duration, but I don't really see how to convert that duration to actual music notation. I've guessed that a duration of 376 is a quarter note in the file I'm reading because I know the song, and obviously 188 is an eighth note, but this certainly does not generalise to all MIDI files. Any ideas?

• PHP's SimpleXML not handling &#8217 ; properly

  I'm parsing an RSS feed that has an &#8217; in it. SimpleXML turns this into a ’. What can I do to stop this? Just to answer some of the questions that have come up - I'm pulling an RSS feed using CURL. If I output this directly to the browser, the &#8217; displays as ’ which is what's expected. When I create a new SimpleXMLElement using this, (e.g. $xml = new SimpleXmlElement($raw_feed); and dump the $xml variable, every instance of &#8217; is replaced with ’. It appears that SimpleXML is having trouble with UTF-8 ampersand encoded characters. (The XML declaration specifies UTF-8.) I do have control over the feed after CURL has retrieved the feed before it's used to construct a SimpleXML element.

  This is a Windows Console application (actually a service) that a previous guy built 4 years ago and is installed and running. • WCF Message Debugging on Custom Binding

  I've created a custom binding in WCF for a custom MessageEncoder to allow messages to be written as XML using a wider range of encodings than WCF supports out of the box. The encoder appears to be working and I am able to send and receive messages, but I want to verify that the XML message being written is exactly as required by the service I am trying to consume. I've turned on message logging for WCF using the diagnostic trace listeners to output the messages sent and received over the wire to a log file. Unfortunately, for calls using my encoder, the message is displayed as ... stream ... EDIT: I don't think it's anything to do with my custom encoding. I have experimented with my custom binding a little, switching to using the built-in text encoding and http transport. I still don't get a message body logged in the message trace. Is there anything that needs to be specified within a custom binding to enable message logging?

• PGP Command Line Decryption --- How to decrypt file?

  I was sent a public key in order to decrypt a pgp-encrypted file. I imported the key with: gpg --import publickey.asc And verified it with gpg --list-keys Now, I'm trying to decrypt the file. I put the passphrase in a file called pass.txt and ran this at the command line: gpg --passphrase-fd ../../pass.txt --decrypt encryptedfile.txt.pgp --output encryptedfile.txt All it says is: Reading passphrase from file descriptor 0 ... And doesn't seem to be doing anything else. I can't tell if it's hanging or not. Is it a relatively quick process? The file is large ( about 2 GB ). Is the syntax for it correct?

• Help me solve my problem with NPR Media Player

  First of, let me apologize for this getting a bit technical. Several weeks ago, I found that while using NPR's media player (e.g. click on 'Listen to the Show' - this is what I've been using as a test) the stream would suddenly halt after a minute or three. I could not get the stream to restart without reloading the page. Now, I assumed this was an issue with NPR's player and Linux (or just a bug in their stuff in general) so I began to dig, the following is what I have tried to date (please note, the tldr; option is to skip to the latest thing as I think I know what is causing the problem). Note: All testing has been done, for consistency purposes, on a clean install of Chromium with no pluggins running. My machine is Ubuntu 10.10x64. First thing I always try, I disabled all firewall stuff on the system (UFW, default deny all, allow ssh). No change, firewall back up for all additional tests unless otherwise noted. In any case, UFW is stateful, so connections it started on a non-specified on different ports will continue to work. I deleted my ~/.macromeda and ~/.adobe folders, restarted (just to be sure) and tried. Program still froze. I decided the problem might be with my install of flash, so I purged the version I had (and the home folders again). I installed the x64 version of flash from a PPA. This had no effect. I decided that the problem might be with the version of flash, so I purged the x64 version and installed the standard x32 version that comes with Ubuntu. No luck. Back to the x64 version for consistency, I decided to set up a 64-bit mini 'clone' of my system in VirtualBox. I was able to run the media player with no problem. I rsynced (in archive mode) my home directory from my real machine to the virtual machine (with bridged networking, so it was fully visible on the network). I also used a few tricks to install ALL of the same software (and repositories) from the real machine to the virtual machine. I was still able to listen to the player. I decided that the problem was with my install (after all, it had gone through two major version upgrades). As I have /home/ on a separate partition it was easy to reinstall and use the same trick from #6 to have my system up and running again within about an hour. I continue to have issues with the NPR Media Player. By this point the weekend had come. At work, I use a wired connection while at home I use a wireless connection. For some reason I forgot that I was having problems and used the NPR Media Player over the weekend. Low and behold it worked just fine at home on wireless (note: for various reasons, I could not test this on wired at home). Following from #6, I decided that the problem was either something with the network at work or still something with my account. As the latter was easier to test, I created a new account on my system and used that at work. The Media Player worked. • Cant delete more than 200 contacts in HTC HERO

  I'm working on security application which will copy all contacts to some other database and delete all contacts from phonebook. I'm testing this on android HTC HERO. I'm successful to delete contacts from phonebook and create new contact info database, Till 200 it is working, but after 200 contacts its not working properly. After tht application starts throwing error. There is one Sync with Google Option in MenuSettingData Sync, I think that is creating problem. There is notification that "Too many contacts deleted" n if i click tht there will b a dialog with title "Delete Limit exceeded". Is there anything i can do to stop syncronization or any other ideas by which i can achieve required output? Please Help me on this

• Outputting a bar chart to an iPhone application?

  Right, I really want to output a Bar Graph to an Obj-C iPhone application - now I may be missing a vital SDK class or something; but right now my solution is to embed a WebView and inside that have a JQuery/Flot based graph - not totally ideal I know! Just wondering if anybody has any other creative solutions or whether a WebView/AJAX solution is the way to go? (For the record; my data source will be figures returned from an external source - i.e downloaded from the internet. So I was even toying with having a PHP Proxy/script do all the work on that, return the figures AND a graph to the application - but then I risk placing extra strain on the server!)

  Hi there. I'm trying to install SugarCRM version 5.5.1. on a webhost. Everything goes nice until the step when the installation begins. The output is this one: Creating Sugar configuration file (config.php) Creating Sugar application tables, audit tables and relationship metadata ............. And never moves on! I check the database and can see that there are tables missing. The install.log file doesnt have any errors, and the last line in the file is: 2010-04-27 22:17:03...creating Relationship Meta for Bug It seems the installation stopped here, but i cant get why! • How to create a UDF that takes a query string and returns the query's resultset

  I want to create a stored procedure that takes a simple SELECT statement and return the resultset as a CSV string. So the basic idea is get the sql statement from user input, run it using EXEC(@stmt) and convert the resultset to text using cursors. However, as SQLServer doesn't allow: select * from storedprocedure(@sqlStmt) UDF with EXEC(@sqlStmt) so I tried Insert into #tempTable EXEC(@sqlStmt), but this doesn't work (error = "invalid object name #tempTable"). I'm stuck. Could you please shed some light on this matter? Many thanks EDIT: Actually the output (e.g CSV string) is not important. The problem is I don't know how to assign a cursor to the resultset returned by EXEC. SP and UDF do not work with Exec() while creating a temp table before inserting values is impossible without knowing the input statement. I thought of OPENQUERY but it does not accept variables as its parameters.

  For what I've read I need Python-Dev, how do I install it on OSX? I think the problem I have, is, my Xcode was not properly installed, and I don't have the paths where I should. • Determining URLs updated via a series of commit logs

  I'm working on a project where I programmatically need to know when a URL has been changed by a developer, post or during deploy. The obvious answer may be to curl the URL one day, save the output, then curl and in x days then do a diff. That won't work in my case, as I'm only looking for changes the developer mande. If the site is a blog, new comments, user submitted photos, etc would make that curl diff useless. RoR example, using github. Let's assume I have access to the entire repository and all commit logs between iterations. Is there a way I could see that "/views/people/show.html.erb" was commited, then backtrack from there (maybe by inspecting routes.rb), to come up with the URL I can then hit via a browser?

  I was using sandcastle to generate help for my project in visual studio 2008. When i change my project to visual studio 2010 and change the project .NET version to .NET 4.0 i got this problem with Sandcastel. I can't understand why sandcastel is using C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5\MSBuild.exe and not C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0\MSBuild.exe thinking that i specified as framework version the v4.0.30319 Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue?? I have implemented the same with Numeric steppers. I am in search of an enhanced component. are there better Advanced Components for Textarea ? • Getting the uptime of a SunOS UNIX box in seconds only

  How do I determine the uptime on a SunOS UNIX box in seconds only? On Linux, I could simply cat /proc/uptime & take the first argument: cat /proc/uptime | awk '{print $1}' I'm trying to do the same on a SunOS UNIX box, but there is no /proc/uptime. There is an uptime command which presents the following output: $ uptime 12:13pm up 227 day(s), 15:14, 1 user, load average: 0.05, 0.05, 0.05 I don't really want to have to write code to convert the date into seconds only & I'm sure someone must have had this requirement before but I have been unable to find anything on the internet. Can anyone tell me how to get the uptime in just seconds? TIA
