  • Internal Linux machine with Apache that I can access by IP address but not computer name

    I have an Ubuntu machine running LAMP. While on the machine I can type localhost or the computers name to access htdocs. From another machine I can only access the machine via its IP Address. This just started happening recently when someone rearranged the network cables and removed a hub sitting between the machine and the network, which makes me think it wasn't all the stable to begin with anyways. Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

    Let's start with a diagram : We can see a "typical" IPv4 company network with : An Internet acces through a proxy An "Others companys" access through an dedicated proxy A direct access to local resources All computers have a proxy.pac file that indicates which proxy to use or whether to connect directly. Computers have access to just a local DNS (no name resolution for google.com for example.) By the way ... The company does not respect the RFC1918 internally and uses public addresses! (historical reason). The use of internet proxy explicitly makes it possible to not to have problem. What if we would migrate to IPv6? Step 1 : IPv6 internet access Internet access in IPv6 is easy. Indeed, just connect the proxy in Internet IPv4 and IPv6. There is nothing to do in internal network : Step 2 : IPv6 AND IPv4 in internal network And why not full IPv6 network directly? Because there is always the old servers that are not compatible IPv6 .. Option 1 : Same architecture as in IPv4 with a proxy pac This is probably the easiest solution. But is this the best? I think the transition to IPv6 is an opportunity not to bother with this proxy pac! Option 2 : New architecture with transparent proxy, whithout proxypac, recursive DNS Oh yes! In this new architecture, we have: Explicit Internet Proxy becomes a Transparent Internet Proxy Local DNS becomes a Normal Recursive DNS + authorative for local domains No proxypac Explicit Company Proxy becomes a Transparent Company Proxy Routing Internal Routers reditect IP of appx.ext.example.com to Company Proxy. The default gateway is the Transparent Internet proxy. Questions What do you think of this architecture IPv6? This architecture will reveal the IP addresses of our internal network but it is protected by firewalls. Is this a real big problem?   • linux macvlan - stop from broadcasting hostname

    I am trying to simulate two different computers on one box, using the macvlan module (which is awesome, by the way) but I have one small problem; When I create the macvlan Ubuntu 11.10 very helpfully starts broadcasting its hostname on both interfaces, creating an amazing amount of confusion for everything that deals with hostnames. Does anyone know how to stop ubuntu from advertising its hostname on a certain interface? Thanks!

    I would like to know how can I accomplish the following: When I join a workstation (with Windows 7) in the domain, I want that computer to be put into a specific OU. Only when its a workstation with Windows 7. This is because I have GPOs that must apply to all workstations in the domain. Can I only accomplish this using a script? Or can I set a rule like if the computers has Windows 7, put that computer into this specific OU.

  • Networking Mac OS X 10.6 and Vista via ethernet?

    How can I make Vista home premium access OS X hard drive? and the other way around? I'd like to transfer files via direct ethernet. Plugging in an ethernet cable makes both computers recognize a network, but not the other device. Each firewall is turned off, but no luck. Edit: I don't see Windows Sharing in the Service Column.

  • RDP exits immediately after connecting to Windows Server 2008 R2

    Background: I recently got a Windows cloud VPS server. I don't have much experience with server admin (I'm a programmer), and what little I do have is with linux servers. Ever since getting the server I've been having issues with RDP. I can connect about two or three times, after which point I can't connect until one of the tech guys "fixes" it (see below). When I connect, I can stay connected for hours with no problem. When the problem connecting starts, the first time I try to log in, the remote desktop window pops up, starts connecting, and then exits with "Your Remote Desktop session has ended". After that, for about 10-20 minutes if I try to connect again, the connections times out with Remote Desktop can't connect to the computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access on the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network then goes back to connecting once and immediately disconnecting. All of the updates are installed. The firewall has been correctly configured to let RDP traffic through. The remote setting is "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop". I tried creating a second user, and when I can't connect, I can't connect to that user either. I've tried both soft and hard reboots, neither of which help. I've tried connecting from two different computers (both running Windows 7) from two different networks (work and home), and the behavior is the same. Everything else on the server continues to run fine (IIS-served http pages, Tomcat-served java pages, svn, ping). The "fix" that the tech guys supply is simply logging into the console on their end, after which point I can connnect 2 or 3 times again. The event viewer on the server has "authentication failure" (or something similar) events generated when I attempt to log in and can't. I can't get to the actual event at the moment as I'm currently in the can't connect stage, and waiting for the techs to log in. But when I searched for the event earlier this morning I couldn't find anything useful. Can anyone help?

    I want to give remote access to my postresql db (8.2) to computers that are at the same lan, at the default config I have added this line to pg_hba.conf where xxx.xx.xx.xx is the ip of the machine that hosts postgresql. This machine is a windows 2k server. # IPv4 local connections: host all all 0.0.0.0/0 password host all all xxx.xx.xx.xx/24 password There no firewall or such blocking the connection between and `listen_addresses = '*' for postgresql.conf .

  • Why does F@H not bind to more than one core on Windows?

    I have been contributing to Stanford's Folding@Home project for some time with most of the computers I own. I just installed the Windows client on a new machine running Windows 7, but see that the F@H process only binds to one CPU core. Is this due to it being run on Windows? (I have the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 installed.) On the Mac and under 64-bit Linux distros, it will run across all available CPU cores.

I want to connect a computer that's outside of my home network (in someone else's house) to do the WHS via the internet. How do I do this?   • Only Macs can connect to WIFI with WPA-Personal security on.

    I have an odd issue with a Netgear WIFI router, 4 computers, 2 pc laptops with XP and 7 installed, one MacBook Pro and one older Mac mini. With security off everything can connect to the wifi. With WPA-Security on only the Macs can connect to the wifi. I've reset the Netgear router, done everything again from scratch, no deal. The PCs just can't connect.

Any ideas on where to troubleshoot?   • Install Windows SteadyState without an internet connection?

    Based on the results of this post, I'm trying to install Windows SteadyState on a bunch of computers with no internet connection (but all with legitimate copies of windows XP pro). The problem is that the installer asks to be connected to the Windows Genuine Advantage server, and I can't manage that. Is there a workaround? I can use internet at my home, but cannot have the school install and pay for a connection. Maybe there's another program that would work just as well?

I can do it with the "site to zone assignment list", however when I do, it locks trusted sites on the client computer "this setting is managed by your administrator". What I need is a way to add the site, make it persistant, and not affects the users ability to add trusted sites of thier own. (It's a development enviroment, sites are created and tested regularly, they need that ability.)
