  The Java implementors seem slow to adopt language improvements, for example compare C# with full closures, expression trees, LINQ etc.. to Java, and even the push back of some stuff to Java 8 will still leave it behind the current implementation of C#. However since I dont intend to use either Java or C# that particular language war isnt of interest too much, im more concerned with the JVM vs CLR. Is this lagging-behind also applicable to the JVM? Will Scala, Clojure etc.. will they be able to continue to innovate or score optimal performance in the face of slowly progressing underlying VM such as JVM? Is Clojure/Scala restrained at present by JVM limitations?

  I am a student and I have made websites for some companies before but now I would like to make a generic website for myself but dont know how to get started as I never had to deal with hosting or bandwidth before. I am looking to make a website that will provide users with information about me. In the future I might add things such as ordering or buying products but for now the idea is to provide information only. I was told not to go for any webhoster outside of Canada as I might risk the confidential integrity of my users or myself. I have no idea where to get started or what I need. I now also have to deal with possible security issues or security holes I may leave in my website creation... • How do you structure your shared code so that it is "re-findable" for new developers?

  I started working at my current job about 8 months ago, and its been one of the best experiences I've had as a young programmer. It's a small company, and both my co-developers are brilliant guys. One of the practices that they both have been encouraging is lots of code-reuse. Our code base is mainly C#, and we're using a centralized revision control system. The way the repository is currently structured, there is a single folder in which all shared class libraries are placed (along with unit tests for each library), and our revision control system allows for sharing or linking those libraries out to other projects. What I'm trying to understand at this point is how the current structure of the folder can be made more conducive for finding those libraries again. I've talked to the other developers about this, and they agree that it's gotten a little messy. I find that I am sometimes "reinventing the wheel" because I didn't realize that there was an existing piece of code that solved a particular problem. The issue is complicated further by the fact that we're sharing some code between ASP.NET MVC2, WinForms, and Windows CE projects, and sharing code between applications built against multiple versions of .NET. How do other people approach this? Is the answer in naming the libraries in a certain way or is it preferable to invest in some code-search software? Is the answer in doc comments? Should we be sharing libraries at all or should we simply branch the class libraries for re-use? Thanks for any and all help!

• Folding at home refusing connection?

  I am having a slight problem. I love contributing to folding at home, if some of you dont know what it is, it's a program that downloads work from the stanford university servers, has your computer process it (takes about 12 hours for 1 assignment depending on the processor, and then uploads it back. The problem with mine is that when I run FAHControl in terminal, it says Error 111 connection refused. This doesnt happen when i run folding at home on windows. Can someone tell me how to fix this? • USB Mouse sleeping after 5 seconds when on battery

  My usb mouse sleeps after 5 seconds of inactivity when running on battery power. It wakes uo again when i press any button on the mouse. This is really annoying. I have made lsusb, and I noticed my mouse is Bus 001 Device 012: ID 04d9:2083 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. I have checked my /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/autosuspend but it is already set to 0, and the directory usb1 has many subdirectories which also have autosuspend files, and i dont know how to edit them. Also, I would like a permanent solution, which would work for any mouse, on any of my 3 usb ports. Any ideas? Using: Ubuntu 12.04 64bit

  I have dedicated server where I planned to run virtualbox virtual machines. Since the VMs are managed with vagrant/chef I may end up with many different ones. I thought it would be a great idea to deploy a dnsmasq on the server, which is going to dynamically assign the ip addresses to the VMs. Since each Vagrant/Chef recipe is configured to set the VM's host name I can find/reference the appropriate VM by the host name. Finally, the entire infrastructure is not directly accessible via internet, so the dedicated Server is the OpenVPN host. On the Dedicated Server I don't see the vboxnet0 interface but VirtualBox is installed without GUI. Accessing of virtual boxes via ssh works fine. Did I miss smth? DNSMasq must serve the local VMs only, otherwise there is a chance that local DNSMasq start to serve other server's on the network, what I don't want. Because I don't see vboxnet0 I tend to use no-dhcp-interface=eth0 config option. Are there any thoughts on that despite, the fact that a second NW-card (which is not the case), might start serving DHCP-Requests? How should I config the VM's network interface that I am able to access it via OpenVPN and resolve the hostnames using the DNSMasq. I think it should be the host-only network card. Should I do bridging in the OpenVPN config or is it sufficient to use routing.

• I cant see my windows drive in ubuntu

  I'm n00ber than any n00b you ever seen, so bear with me... I just downloaded wubi and installed ubuntu 12.10 along with Windows 7 on the same HDD. Linux works fine, but doesnt show files from drive C (on which it is installed). I really need C as it contains all my files. I did df -h in the terminal. It does show the drive. /dev/sda2 577G 220G 358G 38% /host Now I tried to mount the drive sudo mount /dev/sda2 and got the response mount: /dev/sda2 already mounted or /host busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda2 is already mounted on /host I dont know what that means. The drive doesnt show up in HOME FOLDER. What am i supposed to do now?

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

  I installed ubuntu 13.04 alongside windows xp professional. When I tried to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04, it took some time to download and then it started cleaning the files and then message was displayed that xp cleaned (this msg was seen by my younger brother and then he cut the power off) . Now the computer when starts displays this screen and I dont know how to proceed. To anyone giving solution I would like tell you that I prefer xp over linux(personal reasons). So is there any way to get out of this problem, neithet I can open xp nor linux?

• google webmaster showing 6 pages submitted 0 indexed, yet i can see them all there when i search in google?

  I have a small 'brochure' type site with 6 pages, i can see them all the pages showing up in google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section it says 6 submitted, (the blue bar of the graph), but the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed ? any idea why this is ? I dont really think its that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. =================================================== UPDATE 9/3/12 having just looked in google webmaster its showing that there are 11 pages indexed, under the health index status tab.. but under the optimization sitemap tab it shows 6 urls submitted but only 1 indexed ? please see images bellow index status: Sitemap status:

• Is Ubuntu running well on an usb hdd? Need suggestions

  Dear Linux and Ubuntu pros, I have here a company notebook, and because the hdd is full encrypted I cannot install an extra partition for another system that I would like to use in my free time. And I really need another system, because this crap windows here with that much of antivirus, antispyware, anti-whatever on it is sooo slow and anoying. What can I do? I could use an external usb hdd with another system. Because I would like to handle big files and so on, I dont want to use an sub stick. An usb 2.5hdd + ubuntu is what I think the best option. Here are my question: Do I have to note something? Is Ubuntu running well on an external hdd? Do I have big performance problems (because of the usb hdd)? Should I buy a very fast hdd for much money or is it not that important? Any suggestions? Thank you :)

  Alright... So I have a 15" dell studio xps with a 1080p screen. Everything seems really small with 1080p, in 720 everything is fine but just looks very low res. So I definitely want to get the full resolution the display can give me but dont want everything so small. help?? EDIT: Well yes higher resolution means more pixels. My question is, is it possible to use wine to install matlab(for windows)? will the performance of matlab being affected? Except wine, dual-boot, and purchase a new matlab for linux license key, what other options do I have? Thanks for help Update: I just searched for virtual box, will it be a good alternative? Update: After trying with virtualbox, I believe it will not be a good option, because it only run with the ram allocated for it.
