• Windows 7 Won't find Lexmark X4550

  I just got Lexmark X4550 wireless printer and want to have it installed on my laptop Windows 7 Beta. I have installed using Lexmark drivers and doing a "add a printer" device search. But when I tried to print a document i got an error message: "Communication not available. The printer cannot communicate with the computer...". This pinter used to work perfectly on my Windows XP Pro SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I need FTP on my local LAN so my scanner can send me scans. I am on Debian sid. I installed ftpd and created the user anonymous. I removed anonymous from /etc/ftpusers When I try to login as anonymous it says: login failed. I can't seem to find any log file. I'm using FTP server (Version 6.4/OpenBSD/Linux-ftpd-0.17) update:I needed that so my printer had one place to store my scanned documents on the LAN. solved that buying a dedicated USB pen drive (thankfully I bought a printer one with plenty of options) but in the past this was a very simple task. Install ftpd, specify the directory for anonymous access, and be done with it. now every ftp daemon has several layers of security and chroot in it's core... this is just crazy when all you need a place for a printer to dump files in a secured network.

• Word 2007 has highjacked my RTF association to Jarte Pro

  64-bit Vista I have both Word 2007 and Jarte Pro. I have used Default Programs Set Associations in Vista to associate RTF with Jarte Pro. However, when clicking on an RTF file in Explorer, it opens in Word 2007. Is there any way to correct this, other than to uninstall Word? :) =============================================================================== After much back and forth with Jarte's developer, he determined that: "The error you are encountering appears to be due to a problem Jarte is having communicating with your printer. However, I don't know why this would only be happening when you start Jarte by clicking on a file. I will have to investigate this further. Meanwhile, try downloading and installing the latest printer driver for your printer and see if that helps." I did have the latest driver. He will correct the problem with the next version of Jarte (a terrific program, BTW).

• Internet printing : print to iOS gateway -> AirPrint / something -> Laser printers

  I've done a bit of research on the Internet, and it looks like I'm on a dead end. My goal is to minimize cost, and be able to send and print documents AUTOMATICALLY (may be 10 or 20 pages per day) to a laser printer in a remote office. The preliminary method is to use: iOS 5.1.1 (JB'ed) with 3G connection, HP (or other brands) printer with AirPrint, iCloud's Documents and may be write some launchd scripts to monitor any new documents in iCloud. May be with other software. I am not sure yet. By using the cloud, I can upload new docs to the cloud anywhere in my city, and the iOS will be able to see them within a reasonable amount of time, then print it. But it seems this combo is not workable. Anyone got any advice on how to make this set up work, or propose other alternatives that requires NO PC or Mac? Currently I have a 3GS with 3G connectivity spare. Need to buy a new printer though.

  Today I wanted to print an email from the Mail app (modern UI). I selected devices from the charms bar, and I chose my printer. The problem is that it was a very long email (a 40 replies unthreaded email), and I only needed the first page. It looks like there is no way to select a page range in the simple printing dialog, am I right? I solved the problem by inserting just one page in the printer and then deleting the job, but this is not a real fix... (I could print to a PDF printer, then open in Acrobat and print again, but...)

  I am running Windows Server 2008 (not R2) for a print server and I have a program that needs to write to the UNC path of the network printer. I have found that anyone in the Print Operators group is able to write to the UNC path of the network printer, but standard users are not. I have tried adding the same permissions as the Print Operators group to a user, but when I try to write to the UNC path, I get Access Denied. I cannot add users to the Print Operators group because it gives too many permissions. What permissions do I need to set to allow standard users to print to the UNC path of a network printer?

  I've been attempting to set up my new brother multi-function device to work as a printer and scanner using the following steps. It is connected to the network as a LAN device, not directly connected to my ubuntu machine. Downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver from Brother support. (Select the deb packages, not the rpms). Followed the instructions to install the lpr driver. Followed the instructions to install the cupswrapper driver. After this point I was able to successfully perform a test print, so the printer part is working. So far I haven't had much luck getting the scanner working. This is what I've tried: Downloaded the brscan4 and scan-key-tool deb packages from brother support. Followed the instructions for installing the scanner driver for network. Followed the instructions for installing scan-key-tool. However when I tried to scan it detects no scanner. I then tried the solution offered in this answer to a question based on a similar brother printer, but no luck. I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to find out what? Or should I uninstall everything and start again from the beginning?

  I have a shape that will be defined by: char s_type; char color; double height; double width; These variables are scanned in from a request string sent to my server and passed into my printing function, which then prints out the shape. • Windows 2008 R2 SMB / CIFS Logging to diagnose Brother MFC Network Scanning

  I am attempting to setup network scanning on a brother MFC-9970CDW printer. According to the Brother documentation, the printer is setup to connect to any CIFS network share. I applied all of the appropriate setting in the printer however I get a "sending error" when I try to scan a document. When I look at the logs of the 2008 R2 server that I am attempting to connect to; I can see in the security log where the printer successfully authenticates, however nothing else is logged. I would assume that immediately after the authentication, the printer is making a CIFS request and some sort of error is occurring, however I can't seem to find any way to log this information to find out what is going on. Is it possible to get Windows 2008 to log SMB/CIFS traffic?   I'm looking for an industrial strength cloud file storage system. It will be used by multiple people in a startup. Our requirements: Transparent file system access: files and folders in the file system must be able transparently access (read and write) files in the cloud; files must be synchronized whenever network access is available and buffered otherwise. The system must be usable by non-technical people. Access control: we need to control who can access which files, at least on a very coarse basis. e.g., the developers will be able to access the system design documents, only the corporate folks can access recruiting documents, and only management can access certain corporate documents. Dropbox provides this via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. so the cloud service should have a notion of an account (our startup) with multiple users with distinct credentials and rights for each user Clients: it must be accessible from Macs and PCs; I would hope that it supports Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) too Security: it must provide robust security Backup: the cloud service must reliably backup the files Versioning: change version history, is a big plus, but not required Not free: we're willing to pay for the service So far, we've reviewed the following, albeit not completely thoroughly: Dropbox: has all except 1) Access control, which is provided via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. and 2) Security, as discussed here http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/05/internet_security and here http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=821.   I have a very critial business application presently running using Winforms. The application is a very core UI shell. It accepts input data, calls a webservice on my server to do the computation, displays the results on the winforms app and finally send a print stream to the printer. Presently the application is deployed using Click-once. Moving forward, I am trying to contemplate wheather I should move the application into a Silverlight application. Couple of reasons I am thinking silverlight. Gives clients the feel that it is a cloud based solution. Can be accessed from any PC. While the clickonce app is able to do this as well, they have to install an app, and when updates are available they have to click "Yes" to update. The application presently has a drop down list of customers, this list has expanded to over 3000 records. Scrolling through the list is very painful. With Silverlight I am thinking of the auto complete ability. Out of the browser - this will be handy for those users who use the app daily. I haven't used Silverlight previous hence looking for some expert advice on a few things: Printing - does silverlight allow sending raw print data to the printer. The application prints to a Zebra Thermal label printer. I have to send raw bytes to the printer with the commands. Can this be done with SL, or will it always prompt the "Print" dialog? Out of browser - when SL apps are installed as out of browser, how to updates come through, does the app update automatically or is the user prompted to opt for update?

• Disable Windows Media Player "media server" network locations

  I'm running Windows 8 and in the Computer menu, I see a huge list of "media server" network locations of many of the PCs in my network (most running Windows 7). Is there a way to either locally disable this so I don't see this list every time, or disable this sharing feature on the other computers? I've tried disabling "Media Streaming options" from the Network and Sharing Center (on my PC), but that had no effect. Another thing I tried was enabling Media Streaming, but then selecting all the found clients and clicking Blocked in the list of found clients. That had no effect in removing the list either. I've also attempted disabling the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, but alas, the list remains. I'm starting to believe there's a magic registry key to unbury and flip to a "1", but all the searching I've done has come up empty.

  We have a sever that shares all the printers. The PC's that are running on XP professional get a error message quoting (Connect to Printer). The only way I can find to get around the problem is by restating the printer and as soon is it comes online you can then add it but you have not got long. do you think it could be anything to-do with updates on the sever? the sever system is running Windows Server 2003 any help would be much appreciated.   Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

  I am running flash-player plug-in 10.0.32.10 inside of Firefox on a SLED 11 machine. Firefox can print to the network printer without issue from File Print. However, I cannot get the flash-player plugin to print at all. The print dialog comes up, asks for which printer, and which pages. I click Print and it was as if I had pressed cancel. Is this a known issue?

• wireshark not seeing all packets on WiFi

  I'm using Wireshark on OSX, trying to sniff my home network over WiFi. While I can see packets that are sent to/from the host I'm sniffing on, I'm not seeing anything else that goes over the WiFi. It's like I'm not in promiscuous mode or something (the promiscuous mode box is in fact checked). The router is an Apple Airport Extreme, protected by WPA2. I'm attached to the network I'm trying to sniff, so I'm confused about why I can't see other traffic. Edit: I solved this by the following: Plug Macbook directly into the Airport Extreme router Enable "internet sharing" on Macbook, with no password. Bind wireless device (the one I wanted to sniff) to the WiFi hotspot generated by Internet sharing in step 2. Run Wireshark on the Macbook, bound to device en1. Don't forget to disable sharing after you're done. :-)
