  • Windows 7 boot from downloaded .iso

    Downloaded Windows 7 .iso off the net and want to install from USB key on old laptop (previously/still running XP) that has no CD/DVD drive. Here's what I've got so far: Read the instructions in this post: http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 , which were quite straight forward and clear. Properly formatted USB key with another laptop (this one running vista), also with no DVD drive wasn't sure how to make the USB bootable, since my .iso was downloaded and I have no DVD drive. Any help would be much appreciated!!

After the upgrade, if I try to use the Cisco VPN client to connect to a network, I get this message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 440: Driver Failure. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to connect with no problems. The version of the client I am using is 5.0.05.0290.

  • Fedora 9: problem with hibernation and standby

    Whenever I put the the computer to hibernate or standby, black screen appears and it stays forever. How to rectify this? Pressing any key does not wake my system. Finally I do force shutdown and then restart. Even no activity is shown by harddisk. I have dual boot Fedora/Vista sony vaio.

  • Windows 7 fails to install on KVM with qemu

    I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a virtual machine on my 64 bit Ubuntu Karmic box. I get to the point of selecting my language settings and clicking 'install now', but a short while later I get a blue screen of death. I've tried a few variations, including using the 32 bit (fails very quickly). The virt-install command I've tried includes this: sudo virt-install --connect qemu:///system -n ksm-win7 -r 2048 \ --disk path=/home/kief/VM-Images/ksm-win7.qcow2,size=50 \ -c /var/Software/Windows7/Full/64bit/SW_DVD5_SA_Win_Ent_7_64BIT_English_Full_MLF_X15-70749.ISO \ --vnc --os-type windows --os-variant vista --hvm The limited info I could find suggested that 'vista' should work as the --os-variant, I haven't found any values specific to windows 7. Here's my blue screen: I've found very little by Googling, so I'm guessing this isn't a case of KVM simply not supporting Windows 7. Thanks for any help. Update: I have been able to successfully create a Windows 7 VM using the graphical "Virtual Machine Manager" app, although I don't really understand the cause of the problem with the VM created with virt-install. Comparing the configuration files under /etc/libvirt/qemu provides some clues, although I don't know enough to interpret them properly. I'm not sure whether there is something that can be done to get it working on a qemu-emulation CPU, or whether a newer version will support it. But at least it is possible to get it running on a KVM VM.

Edit: On Win8 Aero was removed but the taskbar is transparent (the desktop background picture is slightly visible 'behind' the taskbar). When I'm using the taskbar to switch programs I don't like seeing artifacts 'bleeding-through', I find it distracting.

  • DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

    Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. I've installed Windows 7 RTM (x64) I have this audio device: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio I have tried using the windows 7 basic driver, and also the Vista 64-bit driver from Dell's website (details): Date: 10/29/2007 Version: 6.10.0.5511, A04 File Size: 7 MB With both drivers, I get normal stereo sound from the driver, but my 5.1 surround sound doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix?

    My landlord would like to print to her printer connected to her Mac from Windows machines in her house. (I'm unsure of what versions of windows, but I assume Vista or 7.) Looking at these docs from Apple, it sounds like I can set up the share via Bonjour for Windows or SMB. What are the pros and cons of doing it one way or the other? Has anybody who has tried both found one more reliable than the other, or is it pretty much a tossup?

But I can't do that in Foxit Reader (version 3.1.4.1125, using Windows Vista Home, Chinese Traditional) Example: I open 3 files: Page2.pdf Page3.pdf Page1.pdf which opens Foxit Reader with a tab for each file, in the order Page2.pdf Page3.pdf Page1.pdf Is there a way to change the order of the tabs to Page1.pdf Page2.pdf Page3.pdf ? With some themes it is (visually) obvious, but with some others not (especially not when using remote access like VNC). Is there some dialog where I can see that AERO / DWM is enabled / disabled?
