• Using VirtualMode on a DataGridView when the number of rows/columns isn't known

  I need to display an unknown length sequence of dictionaries with unknown keys efficiently in a data grid. This sequence is the result of a potentially slow LINQ query that could contain any number of results. At first I thought that VirtualMode on DataGridView was what I was looking for but it appears that the number of rows and columns must be known upfront. I tried adding a single row and column then adding more as needed from the CellValueNeeded event but this doesn't work. Is this even possible with VirtualMode? Or do I need to estimate how many rows are visible on the screen and manually build up the rows/columns? And if so, how do I ensure that a vertical scrollbar is present and react appropriately when a user uses it?

• Hibernate @Index on @Enumerated field doesn't work

  I am using Hibernate to talk to my DB. I have one field that is an enumeration and it is going to be used in a slow query. So I'd like to index it. I've put the following annotations on the field: @Column(name="RIGHT_TYPE", unique=false, nullable=false, length=10) @Enumerated(EnumType.STRING) @Index(name = "ABC_INDEX") protected RightType rightType; However, I don't see any index on that field created. But I can create one manually if I wish so. Why is that? Is there any way to force Hibernate to make it happen?

• How do I list all non-system stored procedures?

  I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know?   Hi, I have the following model structure class Authors(db.Model) : nickname = db.StringProperty(required=True) fullname = db.StringProperty(required=True) class Articles(db.Model) : title = db.StringProperty(required=True) body = db.StringProperty(required=True) author = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) class Favorites(db.Model) : who = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) what = db.ReferenceProperty(Articles, required=True) I'd like to display 10 last articles according to this pattern: article.title, article.body, article.author(nickname), info if this article has been already favorited by the signed in user. I have added a function which I use to get the authors of these articles using only one query (it is described here) But I don't know what to do with the favorites (I'd like to know which of the displayed articles have been favorited by me using less than 10 queries (I want to display 10 articles)). Is it possible?

• Hierarchical Hibernate, how many queries are executed?

  So I've been dealing with a home brew DB framework that has some seriously flaws, the justification for use being that not using an ORM will save on the number of queries executed. If I'm selecting all possibile records from the top level of a joinable object hierarchy, how many separate calls to the DB will be made when using an ORM (such as Hibernate)? I feel like calling bullshit on this, as joinable entities should be brought down in one query , right? Am I missing something here? note: lazy initialization doesn't matter in this scenario as all records will be used.

  I am pretty much interested into using the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0. I have also seen some possibilities of using it in F#, as much as in C#. Despite, I can only see what PLINQ has to offer with, for example, the following: var query = from c in Customers.AsParallel() where (c.Name.Contains("customerNameLike") select c; There must for sure be some other use of this parallelism thing. Have you any other examples of using it? Is this particularly turned toward PLINQ, or are there other usage as easy as PLINQ? Thanks! =)

• Simplest way to use a DatagridView with Linq to SQL

  Hi, I have never used datagrids and such, but today I came across a simple problem and decided to "databind" stuff to finish this faster, however I've found that it doesn't work as I was expecting. I though that by doing something as simple as: var q = from cust in dc.Customers where cust.FirstName == someString select cust; var list = new BindingList<Customer>(q.ToList()); return list; Then using that list in a DataGridView1.DataSource was all that I needed, however, no matter how much I google, I can't find a decent example on how to populate (for add/edit/modify) the results of a single table query into a DataGridView1. Most samples talk about ASP.NET which I lack, this is WinForms. Any ideas? I've came across other posts and the GetNewBindingList, but that doesn't seem to change much. What am I missing (must be obvious)? Thanks in advance. Martin.

  Is it possible to change or remove http request form inputs in an httpmodule? My goal is to create a security IHttpmodule that will check the request for reasonable values, such as limits on acceptable input and query parameter length, or use the AntiXSS Sanitizer to remove threats, log potential hack attempts, etc. before a request is passed on to a processor. Because this is a cross cutting concern I'd prefer to find a solution that applies to all requests and affects all ways request values could be accessed, Reqest.Form, Action(model), Action(FormCollection), HttpContext.Current.Request.Form, etc. I'm using MVC and have considered creating custom model binders to clean the data before creating the model instance. But that would be application specific, require remembering to register every model binder and only apply to Action(model).

  I have two tables Publishers and Campaigns, both have similar many-to-many relationships with Countries,Regions,Languages and Categories. more info Publisher2Categories has publisherID and categoryID which are foreign keys to publisherID in Publishers and categoryID in Categories which are identity columns. On other side i have Campaigns2Categories with campaignID and categoryID columns which are foreign keys to campaignID in Campaigns and categoryID in Categories which again are identities. Same goes for Regions, Languages and Countries relationships I pass to query certain publisherID and want to get campaignIDs of Campaigns that have at least one equal to Publisher value from regions, countries, language or categories thanks

  How should I index a date column when some rows has null values? We have to select rows between a date range and rows with null dates. We use Oracle 9.2 and higher. Options I found Using a bitmap index on the date column Using an index on date column and an index on a state field which value is 1 when the date is null Using an index on date column and an other granted not null column My thoughts to the options are: to 1: the table have to many different values to use an bitmap index to 2: I have to add an field only for this purpose and to change the query when I want to retrieve the null date rows to 3: locks tricky to add an field to an index which is not really needed What is the best practice for this case? • SQL server virtual memory usage and perofrmance

  Hello, I have a very large DB used mostly for analytics. The performance overall is very sluggish. I just noticed that when running the query below, the amount of virtual memory used greatly exceed the amount of physical memory available. Currently, phsycial memory is 10GB (10238 bytes) where as the virtual memory returns significantly more 8388607 bytes. That seems really wrong, but I'm at a bit of a loss on how to proceed. Does there algorithm take into account the search popularity of a query (using google-trends data or something)? • What mail storage should I choose for our web application; IMAP, key-valud store, rdbms, ...

  I have to store e-mail messages for use with our application. I have "metadata" for all messages inside a relational database, but I don't feel comfortable keeping message content (gigabytes and terabytes of email data) inside a database. I'm currently using IMAP as a storage, but I have my doubts if I choose correctly. First of all there is a problem of uidvalidity and how to keep a permanent reference to message inside IMAP. Second, I'm not sure if this is the most robust solution in terms of backup/restore strategies, corruption of store, replication ... Positive side is that I can query IMAP using the headers because the data is mostly indexed. I don't know if key-value stores are a better approach (Casandra, Tokyo cabinet, redis). How they handle storing 1KB and 50MB of data. How they prevent corruption and when corruption or device failure happens how can I repair the store.

• Decoupling into DAL and BLL - my concerns.

  Hi, In many posts concerning this topic I come across very simple examples that do not answer my question. Let's say a have a document table and user table. In DAL written in ADO.NET i have a method to retries all documents for some criteria. Now I the UI I have a case where I need to show this list along with the names of the creator. Up to know I have it done with one method in DAL containig JOIN statement. However eveytime I have such a complex method i have to do custom mapping to some object that doesn't mark 1:1 to DB. Should it be put into another layer ? If so then I will have to resing from join query for iteration through results and querying each document author. . . which doen't make sense... (performance) what is the best approach for such scenarios ?

  I'm trying to validate that the fields given to sphinx are valid, but I'm having difficulty. Imagine that valid fields are cat, mouse, dog, puppy. Valid searches would then be: @cat search terms @(cat) search terms @(cat, dog) search term @cat searchterm1 @dog searchterm2 @(cat, dog) searchterm1 @mouse searchterm2 So, I want to use a regular expression to find terms such as cat, dog, mouse in the above examples, and check them against a list of valid terms. Thus, a query such as: @(goat) Would produce an error because goat is not a valid term. I've gotten so that I can find simple queries such as @cat with this regex: (?:@)([^( ]*) But I can't figure out how to find the rest. I'm using python & django, for what that's worth.

• Business Objects Web Intelligence-style reporting in a Winform app. Is this possible?

  I have a WinForm app that displays results in a Gridview control. If a user right mouse clicks on a row, he can then, from a popup menu, select a command to perform on the row much like windows File Explorer. But now I want to be able to give the user the ability to construct a filter so that he can control which rows are displayed in the grid w/o effecting the functionality of the application. I would also like the user to be able to select the columns/fields that he sees in the grid. For the basis of this question, let's assume that the data displayed in grid comes from a single table. business Objects' Web Intelligence and Desktop Intelligence applications give me very flexible and powerful reporting capabilities, but I want to integrate this capability into my WinForm application. Does Business Objects, or maybe Crystal Reports provide this sort of functionality? I can construct my own query builder but I'd rather not reinvent sliced bread.

• Order database results by bayesian rating

  I'm not sure this is even possible, but I need a confirmation before doing it the "ugly" way :) So, the "results" are posts inside a database which are stored like this: the posts table, which contains all the important stuff, like the ID, the title, the content the post meta table, which contains additional post data, like the rating (this_rating) and the number of votes (this_num_votes). This data is stored in pairs, the table has 3 columns: post ID / key / value. It's basically the WordPress table structure. What I want is to pull out the highest rated posts, sorted based on this formula: br = ( (avg_num_votes * avg_rating) + (this_num_votes * this_rating) ) / (avg_num_votes + this_num_votes) which I stole form here. avg_num_votes and avg_rating are known variables (they get updated on each vote), so they don't need to be calculated. Can this be done with a mysql query? Or do I need to get all the posts and do the sorting with PHP?
