  As far as I know there are two "kinds" of breadcrumbs. The static/hierarchy one Works like a stack Entries are pushed when a user goes "deeper" into the site Entries are poped when user goes "up" into the site Is the same for all users (for a given page) Shows location rather than history A simple Example would be HOME - BIG CATEGORY - SMALL CATEGORY - ARTICLE The dynamic/historical one Works like a queue Entries are pushed at the end when a user goes to another page Entries are removed from the front when the maximum size is reached Is different for each user, since it is personalized. Shows timeline/history instead of location. A simple example would be SMALL CATEGORY - HOME - BIG CATEGORY - HOME The question is: Are there any ready-made JSF component for these types of navigation?

• Silverlight layout Best Practices

  I'm writing a fairly big interface using Silverlight. As I progress, the xaml file is getting fairly big and is becoming proportionally uglier. Questions Are there any resources out there to make the xaml more readable? For example, how would I display the order of attributes (e.g. height and Width first) so that it looks the most tidy? Another issue is that there are multiple ways to implement an interface with grids and stack panels. Is there a preferred approach when using one or the other? I am looking for advice and links to other resources that can be used as examples.

  Anybody got any any tutorials that cover these subjects ... the official MS 70-536 book covers this but I don't want to take any chances as I want additional reading materials problem is, its proving difficult to find anything on it. It's a fairly big subject so am hoping somone on here as here as got some good reading materials on that cover these subjects. At this very moment in time, im reading this; Tutorial01 Its not much, but its a good starting point. I'm not a big fan MSDN and the way its structured and layout, I mainly use it for framework related questions like classes and interfaces and etc. WHen it comes to tutorials, i prefer thrid party websites. Lastly, this extra reading which I am asking for is really revision for the 70-536 exam. TIA. Ibrar

• Small web-framework like Sinatra, Ramaze etc in .NET

  Are there any similar frameworks like Sinatra, Ramaze etc in .NET? I'm in theory after a framework that let's me create an entire webapp with just one classfile (conceptually) like Sinatra. I'm going to use it for something work-internal, where ASP.NET MVC is too "big" (and I get confused by it's usage) and I have WebForms up to my ears right now (doing a big webforms based project, currently hating it ;) ) Any suggestions? Oh, and I need to be able to host it in IIS. I would go for IronRuby with Sinatra, but I can't find a step-by-step tut for setting it up in IIS ;)

• Odd ActiveRecord model dynamic initialization bug in production

  I've got an ActiveRecord (2.3.5) model that occasionally exhibits incorrect behavior that appears to be related to a problem in its dynamic initialization. Here's the code: class Widget < ActiveRecord::Base extend ActiveSupport::Memoizable serialize :settings VALID_SETTINGS = %w(show_on_sale show_upcoming show_current show_past) VALID_SETTINGS.each do |setting| class_eval %{ def #{setting}=(val); self.settings[:#{setting}] = (val == "1"); end def #{setting}; self.settings[:#{setting}]; end } end def initialize_settings self.settings ||= { :show_on_sale => true, :show_upcoming => true } end after_initialize :initialize_settings # All the other stuff the model does end The idea was to use a single record field (settings) to persist a bunch of configuration data for this object, but allow all the settings to seamlessly work with form helpers and the like. (Why this approach makes sense here is a little out of scope, but let's assume that it does.) Net-net, Widget should end up with instance methods (eg #show_on_sale= #show_on_sale) for all the entires in the VALID_SETTINGS array. Any default values should be specified in initialize_settings. And indeed this works, mostly. In dev and staging, no problems at all. But in production, the app sometimes ends up in a state where a) any writes to the dynamically generated setters fail and b) none of the default values appear to be set - although my leading theory is that the dynamically generated reader methods are just broken. The code, db, and environment is otherwise identical between the three. A typical error message / backtrace on the fail looks like: IndexError: index 141145 out of string (eval):2:in []=' (eval):2:inshow_on_sale=' [GEM_ROOT]/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2746:in send' [GEM_ROOT]/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2746:inattributes=' [GEM_ROOT]/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2742:in each' [GEM_ROOT]/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2742:inattributes=' [GEM_ROOT]/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2634:in `update_attributes!' ...(then controller and all the way down) Ideas or theories as to what might be going on? My leading theory is that something is going wrong in instance initialization wherein the class instance variable settings is ending up as a string rather than a hash. This explains both the above setter failure (:show_on_sale is being used to index into the string) and the fact that getters don't work (an out of bounds [] call on a string just returns nil). But then how and why might settings occasionally end up as a string rather than hash?

  I am trying to create an array or list that could handle in theory, given adequate hardware and such, as many as 100^100 BigInteger entries. The problem with using an array or standard list is that they can only hold Integer.MAX_VALUE number of entries. How would you work around this limitations? A whole new class/interface? A wrapper for list? another data type entirely?

  I'm trying to create an application where I can draw a lot of pictures at a specific point (determined for each image) on one view. I have a coordinates where I need draw a picture, width and height of it For example: I have 2 billion jpeg's images. for each images I have a specific origin point and size. In 1 second I need draw on view 20-50 images in specific point. • Lazy Loading wpf Combobox items

  I have an IEnumerable< which lazy loads it's data. I want to just set a Combobox's ItemsSource to the IEnumerable, but when I do it goes and loads all the data anyway (which removes the point of lazy loading). I've tried it with Linq-To-Sql as well since it seems to be a similar theory and it also loads all the data. Is there an easy way to do this?

• What situations does a Monostate pattern model?

  I know what both a Singleton or a Monostate are and how to implement them. Although I can see many uses for a Singleton, I can't imagine a situation where I would want to let the user create as many instances of my class although in reality only one really exists behind the scenes. Can anybody help me here? I know that for several reasons one should stay away from both patterns, but in theory, what kind of problems does the Monostate model? Thanks

• Using PHP with the default Mac Apache + PHP installation

  Hi, I'm starting to unravel the mysteries of PHP and I configured the pre-installed Snow Leopard PHP and activated the Apache server in the system preferences. So far so good: it works if you put a PHP file in your ~/Sites directory. Since I've my projects in a code/projects directory I created a symbolic link from the ~/Sites dir to the code/projects/one-project/php-dir and bang!, a 403 error: access forbidden. I've been changing the permissions of the dirs to 777, but no luck. Is anyone using the default Snow Leoapard configuration for PHP development and if so, how do you link to your codebase?   Hi, I have a question: In Flash, I have the ability to save certain info onto the server. Now the problem is the user needs to be authenticated as admin in order to do so. I can't use sessions, since if you work longer than 20 minutes in the Flash application, the session is gone. The way I see it, I have 2 possibilities: 1. passing a parameter (bIsAdmin) to Flash from the Website. 2. Launch a http-get request, to get this value (bIsAdmin) from an ashx handler on application startup, when the session has not yet exired. In my opinion, both possibilities are not really secure... So, Which one is safer, 1 or 2? Or does anybody have a better idea ? In my opinion, 1 is safer, because with 2, you can just switch a packet tamperer in between, and bang, you're admin, with permission to save (or overwrite, =delete) anything.

  Hi People who talk about loggers here never talke about EventLog, I think this is good for windows system. Is it reliable, or I found it dead in some bad morning? Why not logging everything at SQLServer, I am creating E-Commerce website, if SQL server down the website will be down anyway. but I am worry about temporally connection failure, what do u think? Why everyone like files, it can be in great size, too big to handle, or maybe I will create another file when a file is too big, and I can create a file with a date.   I am trying to redirect an old URL that uses a query string to the new url that does not.. /tripinfo.cfm?RiverNameID=1&AdventureID=6 Now needs to go to /trips/big-ass-river/overnight.html So I am trying.. RewriteRule ^tripinfo.cfm?RiverNameID=1&AdventureID=6$ /trips/big-ass-river/overnight.html [R=301] But this is not working. . I can redirect the main page no problem using RewriteRule ^tripinfo.cfm$ /trips.html [R=301] If any one could tell me what Im missing that would be great.
