sharepoint 2007 access denied when accessing user profiles via ssp

Guys I have a really strange problem in regards to sharepoint mysites today I go into user profiles and properties in order to setup a property all of a sudden I get access denied. First off I know that I'm logged in with the correct account after the access denied I decided to click on personalization services and permissions I than get An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Cannot complete this action. I'm not seeing anything in the server application logs either. So have any of you guys seen this before is there some kind of way to grant a user account the manage profiles right permission using stsadm. BTW all other fucntions of the ssp are working fine so my question is if the user profiles and my sites of a ssp tanks how do you repair that portion of the ssp? BTW the user accounts that I'm using are site collection owners and also they have full control at the web application level. Our corporate standard is McAfee Enterprise, unfortunately this is non-negotiable. On two types of servers I'm responsible for, SQL & Web, we have noticed major performance issues with the corporate standard setup. Max scan time 45sec One policy for all processes Scan ALL files on write, read and open for backup Heuristics: Find unknown programs, trojans and macros Detect unwanted programs Exclude: EVT, LDF, LOG, MDF, VMD, , windows file protection) This of course still causes major slowdowns. IIS .NET recompiles are slow especially with SharePoint, SQL backups and restores, SQL Analysis Services, Integration Services and temp data from them as well. I have looked from time to time, for some best practices on setting up McAfee of SQL & SQL Analysis Service, SQL Integration Service, Visual Studio, Sharepoint, and .NET web servers in general. How do people setup McAfee enterprise on their corporate serves keeping security intact, but affecting performance as minimally as possible? Has anyone run across white papers on these setups? Obviously some are case by case, but there must be some best practices out there somewhere.

Anonymous user permission issue in SharePoint Server

Hello everyone, I am using SharePoint Server 2007 x64 and Windows Server 2008 x64. I have setup a site with template publishing portal. I have grant anonymous access to all the site. My question is, if I create a new page, how to grant permission to anonymous user to access (read permission) the page? I got this confusion because, for the permission setting of a page, a permission is set according to a user name (e.g. read permission for user "foo" of a page). Since anonymous user does not have a related "user name", how could I grant read permission to anonymous user? BTW: I use Windows Forms authentication and Windows NTLM authentication for my sites. Why does MOSS sometimes delete an existing user from a site?

I'm experiencing an issue with a MOSS installation. I am using the Site Settings Permissions to add an Active Directory account as a valid user of a site. This entails validating that the user account name is correct via the 'Check Names' button, then giving them 'Contribute' permissions. Once this is done they appear as a user on the 'All People' page. This works fine and the user is able to access the site. At some point in the future (sometimes several days later) the user account is somehow removed as a valid user from the site. This site resides in a test environment so access is pretty well controlled; which has allowed us to rule out someone else going in and removing the user manually. This appears to be something that is being done by the system itself and we have no idea why. We can manually add the user back, but then it will eventually get removed again later. I have an admittedly limited understanding of SharePoint permissions, but I believe that SharePoint stores valid users in a SQL database and I would assume that when dealing with Active Directory accounts it would be storing the user name and probably the SID. It appears that for some reason this record is later getting deleted out of the database, as the users will suddenly disappear from the "All People" page and will start getting "Access Denied: You are not authorized..." messages when trying to access the site. Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Using URL rewrite module for http to https redirect

Following ruslany's suggestion on the URL Rewrite Tips page here, I'm trying to use URL Rewrite to redirect http:// requests for my site to https://. I've written and tested the rule using a test site I set up, and so now the final piece is to create a second site (http) to redirect to my https site. (I need to use a second site because I don't want to uncheck the "Require SSL encryption" checkbox on my existing site.) I'm an IIS newbie so my question is: how do I do this? Should I create a site with the same name and host header, only it will be bound to http? Will IIS let me create a site with the same name? I don't want to screw anything up with my existing site (which is a SharePoint site, currently used by external users). That site currently has http and https bound to it. So my assumption is that, using ISS (not SharePoint), I will create a new site (http only) with the same name and host header as my existing site, and add the URL Rewrite rule to the http site. And then I guess I should remove the http binding from my existing site? Does that seem correct? Any advice, gotchas, etc., would be appreciated. Thanks.

Loads of memory in "standby" on Windows Server 2008 R2

In our SharePoint farm, our Web Front End servers all have loads of memory in "standby" mode, meaning very little is available for our IIS worker process. We have 32 GB of RAM in each of the boxes, and standby memory will creep up to about 28 GB, whereas the IIS worker process only seems to be using about 2 GB. Also, we've seen the machine use the swap file extensively while this memory was in standby, so I am starting to think that this memory in standby mode is stopping IIS from using it, forcing it to swap to disk, causing more performance problems. I used SysInternals RamMap to indentify what is being kept in memory, and it was able to tell me that almost everything in standby memory is of type "Mapped File". When I sort the files listed under the file summary tab in RamMap by file size, the largest files (around a few hundred meg each) are IIS log files and SharePoint log files. I would like to understand which process is loading these files into standby memory and why they are not being released. When I do an iisreset, it does not release the memory. Any ideas? Thanks!

SharePoint Calendar - Start time after a certain hour

I am working with SharePoint Calendar list to create a shift schedule for a team (End user side of things, I am not writing code). I have added a few custom columns to the Calendar List Item. I have the list exported to excel where I have a Pivot table set up so I can see a summary of the different columns - I can see the person's name (From the title column), total hours they are scheduled for (separated into weekdays and weekends based on a custom column I added). What I need is a way to check the start time of the shift to determine if it is a Day shift (starts at 7am), Eve shift (starts at 3pm), or a Night shift (starts at 10pm). So, when creating a new calculated column I would assume the function I need would go something like "=If([StartDate]...." but I am not sure on the rest. Anyone know how I would write that function?

SharePoint 2010 MySites - Host on separate servers

We're playing with the SP 2010 Beta ahead of a planned deployment later this year in an academic environment. We anticipate that the majority of traffic will be through MySites when everything is provisioned so we're looking at how we can plan our SP topology to scale nicely. An initial thought is to run the main portal on one server, host "Student" MySites on one server and "Staff" on another. Is it acutally possible to do this easily or are we going down a bad path? Specifically - can we have 2 different MySites site collections, each hosted on a dedicated server? If so, can we configure SharePoint to work out from the users's logon account type of user they are and route them to the correct server?

SharePoint 3.0 Search Stuck Starting

I have a single server running SharePoint 3.0 on WS2003 Sp2 not on a domain. My search service stopped working so I just went in to central admin and hit stop, then hit start. I soon found out this is not the way to do this process. I now can not get the search service to start again. I have tried everything I can think of, and nothing works it changes status to Starting but never gets to started. I have to go in with "stsadm -o spsearch -action stop" from the command prompt to stop it. I am using the Local service account for the service and the content accounts. Can anyone help me?

Telerik RadEditor working issue under VS2008

I've a SharePoint portal for tracking questions in a list. When I open an list item in IE8 Telerik Editor works fine. But if I open this page inside VS2008 in browser mode this control starts to do unexpected actions. It's the Telerik RadEditor for Sharepoint v. 5.3.2.0. Is it a bug of VS2008 or a bug of Telerik RadEditor? Steps to reproduce: Install Telerik RadEditor in SharePoint portal Create a List with Rich editing field and create a new item Paste or type a text into Rich editing field and save changes Open VS2008 Click on any link in start page to open browser window Open created list item in VS in editing mode Mark a part of text in Rich editing field Marked text disappears. Undo button of control shows some paste actions

Hi, I'm developing a windows application, that talks to SharePoint via its built in web services, and i want to get all content types available on a SharePoint site, I'm trying to use Web.Webs WebsService = new Web.Webs(); WebsService.Credentials=credentials; WebsService.Url="url of the web service"; XmlNode listOfContentTypes = WebsService.GetContentTypes(); If credentials have administrator privileges i can get the list of all the content types available, But if credentials don't have administrator privileges a 401 exception is thrown (not enought permission). My question is: How can i get all content types available on a SharePoint site if i don't have administrator priviliges?

Is it possible to register (include) javascript within RenderingTemplate? (RenderingTemplates are used to render list forms or fields) By using <SharePoint:RenderingTemplate ID="NewRelatedListItem" runat="server"> <Template> <span id="part1"> <SharePoint:ScriptLink Name="SPFormFieldAssistant.js" Localizable="false" /> ... </span> ... </Template> </SharePoint:RenderingTemplate> it couldn't be done - it didn't include script at HEAD area, but...: Is something wrong with my code? Althought script IS at Layouts folder and I checked with Reflector that it uses Layouts folder if Localizable='False'. I don't want this script to be loaded with every page, but only for forms. Any ideas on how this could be achieved?

How can i look at executed queries?

Hello, can anyone tell me how to view executed queries in SharePoint? I couldn't find a way to show query logs with SQL Server. As you know, SharePoint framework hides all queries from programmers. Do people create and use Web Parts connections?

I've been writing some SharePoint web parts wich connect (as providers and consumers). I've found many difficulties, and (comparatively*) little material from the web, from books, or from microsoft.com, which is quite surprising as Web Parts have been around since 2003. This is making me think that although web part connections look like a first class feature in SharePoint, that in practice few people write connecting web parts, and few SharePoint users use them. Is this the case - that few developers write connecting web parts, and few users use them? *comparitively: A subjective impression. With each specific problem i usually find only a handful of web pages which address it, and as my problems seem to be fundamental ones (such which data type to wrap in an IWebPartRow), I expect a lot more search results.

SharePoint 2010 - Client Object Model - Add attachment to ListItem

Hi, I have a SharePoint List to which I'm adding new ListItems using the Client Object Model. Adding ListItems is not a problem and works great. Now I want to add attachments. I'm using the SaveBinaryDirect in the following manner: File.SaveBinaryDirect(clientCtx, url.AbsolutePath + "/Attachments/31/" + fileName, inputStream, true); It works without any problem as long as the item that I'm trying to add the attachment to, already has an attachment that was added through the SharePoint site and not using the Client Object Model. When I try to add an attachment to a item that doesnt have any attachments yet, I get the following errors (both happen but not with the same files - but those two messages appear consistently): The remote server returned an error: (409) Conflict The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found I figured that maybe I need to create the attachment folder first for this item. When I try the following code: clientCtx.Load(ticketList.RootFolder.Folders); clientCtx.ExecuteQuery(); clientCtx.Load(ticketList.RootFolder.Folders[1]); // 1 -> Attachment folder clientCtx.Load(ticketList.RootFolder.Folders[1].Folders); clientCtx.ExecuteQuery(); Folder folder = ticketList.RootFolder.Folders[1].Folders.Add("33"); clientCtx.ExecuteQuery(); I receive an error message saying: Cannot create folder "Lists/Ticket System/Attachment/33" I have full administrator rights for the SharePoint site/list. SharePoint Webpart and ASP.NET User Control

I am developing SharePoint Web Parts for MOSS 2007 on Visual Studio 2008. Up until now, I've been adding all my controls by hand to the code behind... but an earlier post suggested I could use the designer to create an ASP.NET User Control, then add it to the webpart, and everything is happy... See figure 5 for an example. However, I can't seem to add a new ASP.NET User Control to my MOSS WebPart project, the template just doesn't appear. If I create a WebApplication and make my User Control in there, I can't see any SharePoint templates to add to the project. Finally, I tried copying a simple aspx file and its code behind to my webpart directly, and adding them as an "existing component"... but now the designer won't recognize the aspx file. Next, I'd probably try adding two projects to my solution, and just referencing any dll's from the ASP.NET application... So how do I get an ASP control into my SharePoint WebPart project so that I can use the Visual Studio designer?

SharePoint 2010 HttpModule problem

I'm trying to write an HttpModule to run on our SharePoint farm - essentially it will check whether the user is authenticated and if they are it will validate some info against another database and potentially redirect the user to sign a variety of usage agreements. Whenever I enable the module in the web.config I'm finding that SharePoint has issues rendering the page - it's almost like the CSS is not getting loaded as the page is devoid of any styling. As a test I've even tried an empty module - i.e. an empty init block so it's not even hooking up any code to any events and the same issue arises. At this point it's an empty class that just implements IHttpModule so it's not even my dodgy coding causing the issue! The module is in a class library that I've dropped in to the bin folder of the application it needs to run against. In the web.config of the app I've simply added an entry as below: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> ... (default stuff ommitted) <add name="SharePointAUP" type="SPModules.SharePointAUP" /> </modules> I must be missing something really obvious here as I've done exactly the same as every sample I've found and yet I'm getting this strange behaviour. Is there something extra I need to do to get SharePoint to play nice with a custom module?

How can I stop SharePoint from appending <mso:CustomDocumentProperties> to my output

I'm trying to hack together an extra feature on top of a POC (smoke and mirrors demo). The POC is on SPS 2007 and I need to integrate with another system. To facilitate part of this, I need to provide a JSONP endpoint. I want this URL: http://sharepoint:2024/Pages/SomeExternalSystem/Payload.aspx?callback=abc To return this: abc({ sampleField1: "sampleData1", sampleField2: 234.56 }); It's all smoke and mirrors anyway, so I uploaded this file to SharePoint: <%@ Page ContentType="text/javascript" Language="C#" %> <%= Request.QueryString["callback"] %>({ sampleField1: "sampleData1", sampleField2: 234.56 }); (And added a page parser rule to allow it to compile the code blocks.) Do files uploaded count against your SharePoint site collection quota if using remote blob storage?

There is a debate going on in my group as we plan to use SharePoint 2010. We want to use Remote Blob Storage (RBS) instead of storing files in the SQL tables themselves. If we use RBS, do the files people upload still count against their site collection quota? To me, it seems obvious that they would. To others in my group, it seems obvious that it wouldn't.

Asp.net MVC/Silverlight and Sharepoint 2010 integration

Just a sidenote: I'm not sure whether I should post this to serverfault as well, because some MOSS admin may have some info for me as well? Additional note 1: I've found this document (Asp.net MVC 2 & Sharepoint integration) if anybody with sufficient expirience is willing to comment on its content whether this can be used in my described scenario or not. Additional note 2: I've discovered (later) that Silverlight is supported in Sharepoint 2010 so I'm considering it as well. So if anyone would comment on silverlight integration as well. A bit of explanation first (without Asp.net MVC/Silverlight) Is it possible to integrate the two? Is it possible to write an application that would share at least credential information with MOSS? I have to write a MOSS application that has to do with these technologies: MOSS 2010 Personal client certificates authentication (most probably on USB keys) Active Directory Federation Services Separate SQL DB that would serve application specific data (separate as not being part of MOSS DB) How should it work? Users should authenticate using personal certificates into MOSS 2010 There would be a certain part of MOSS that would be related to my custom application This application should only authorize certain users via AD FS - I guess these users should have a certain security claim attached to them This application should manage users (that have access to this app) with additional (app specific) security claims related to this application (as additional application level authorization rights for individual application parts) This application should use custom SQL 2008 DB heavily with its own data This application should have the possibility to integrate with external systems as well (Exchange for instance to inject calendar entries, ERP systems etc) This application should be able to export its data (from its DB) to files. I don't know if it's possible, but it would be nice if the app could add these files to MOSS and attach authorization info to them so only users with sufficient rights would be able to view/open these files. Why Asp.net MVC/Silverlight then? I'm very well versed in Asp.net MVC (also with the latest version) and I haven't done anything on Sharepoint since version 2003 (which doesn't do me no good or prepare me for the latest version in any way shape or form). This project will most probably be a death march project so I would rather write my application as a UI rich Asp.net MVC application and somehow integrate it into MOSS. But not only via a link, because I would like to at least share credentials, so users wouldn't need to re-login when accessing my app. Using Asp.net MVC I would at least have the possibility to finish on time or be less death marching. Is this at all possible? I haven't done any serious project using SIlverlight, but I will sooner or later have to. So I'm also considering a jump into it at this moment, because it still might make this application development easier than strict Sharepoint 2010. Questions Is it possible to integrate Asp.net MVC/Silverlight into MOSS as described above? If integration is not possible, would it be possible to create a completely MOSS based application that would work as described? Which parts of MOSS 2010 should I use to accomplish what I need?

Changing IP address in IIS for SharePoint site results in Directory listing error

I have a server here that has 2 roles. One is Exchange 2007 and the other is MOSS 2007. In IIS i have a site, go.domain.com which has our OWA. The other is internal.domain.com which is the MOSS site. I have given the NIC local IPs and each site is using host headers. The GO site has an SSL cert from NetSol, and the MOSS site has a self signed. Right now going to either shows the NetSol site, which browsers complain about when going to the internal.domain.com site, obviously, since they are on the same IP in IIS. Both sites have always run off the original IP of 10.0.0.3 in IIS. When i added the second IP to the NIC, (10.0.0.6) and changed the Sharepoint site in IIS to use this for http and https access, I now get this message in a browser when trying to connect. Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed. Changing the IP back to 10.0.0.3 and the internal site is back up. What am I missing here? Do i need to fool around with Alternate Access Mappings in Central Admin? Am i completely missing the point with multiple SSL certs and host headers?
