  • C - What is the proper format to allow a function to show an error was encountered?

    - by BrainSteel
I have a question about what a function should do if the arguments to said function don't line up quite right, through no fault of the function call. Since that sentence doesn't make much sense, I'll offer my current issue. To keep it simple, here is the most relevant and basic function I have. float getYValueAt(float x, PHYS_Line line, unsigned short* error) *error = 0; if(x < line.start.x || x > line.end.x){ *error = 1; return -1; } if(line.slope.value != 0){ //line's equation: y - line.start.y = line.slope.value(x - line.start.x) return line.slope.value * (x - line.start.x) + line.start.y; } else if(line.slope.denom == 0){ if(line.start.x == x) return line.start.y; else{ *error = 1; return -1; } } else if(line.slope.num == 0){ return line.start.y; } } The function attempts to find the point on a line, given a certain x value. However, under some circumstances, this may not be possible. For example, on the line x = 3, if 5 is passed as a value, we would have a problem. Another problem arises if the chosen x value is not within the interval the line is on. For this, I included the error pointer. Given this format, a function call could work as follows: void foo(PHYS_Line some_line){ unsigned short error = 0; float y = getYValueAt(5, some_line, &error); if(error) fooey(); else do_something_with_y(y); } My question pertains to the error. Note that the value returned is allowed to be negative. Returning -1 does not ensure that an error has occurred. I know that it is sometimes preferred to use the following method to track an error: float* getYValueAt(float x, PHYS_Line line); and then return NULL if an error occurs, but I believe this requires dynamic memory allocation, which seems even less sightly than the solution I was using. So, what is standard practice for an error occurring?

  • Best practices for QA / testing in an Agile (Scrum+XP) team?

    - by Srirangan
Hey guys, We're getting a QA for the first time in our project. We're not sure how to best use him. We work in an Agile environment. Pair programming, user stories, short sprints (two weeks), daily stand-ups, retrospectives, planning meetings, quick releases etc. One obviously way to use a tester is to verify bugs fixes and user stories every sprint. Are there any better ways for an Agile team to utilize a tester. Thanks, Sri

  • Best way to manage JSON object via GET and POST in php.

    - by Kucebe
My site does some short ajax call in JSON format, using jQuery. At client-side i'd like to send object just passing it in ajax function, without being forced to wrap it in an object literal like this: {'JSON_Obj' : myJSON_Obj }. For the same reasons, at server-side i'd like to manage objects without the binding of $_GET['JSON_Obj'] or $_POST['JSON_Obj']. For example, using file_get_contents("php://input"), i can manage POST requests in that way, but in GET format it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

  • When encrypting data that is not an even multiple of the block size do I have to send a complete las

    - by WilliamKF
If I am using a block cipher such as AES which has a block size of 128 bits, what do I do if my data is not an even multiple of 128 bits? I am working with packets of data and do not want to change the size of my packet when encrypting it, yet my data is not an even multiple of 128? Does the AES block cipher allow handling of a final block that is short without changing the size of my message once encrypted?

  • Full-time programmer or software development consultant?

    - by DV
In your opinion and experience, what's best - working full-time and long-term for one company, or part-time short-term on many smaller projects or parts of projects? What do you think are the pros and cons of both? I heard that being a consultant is more profitable and one would pick up more experience. Does that beat an 8 hours by 5 days (thanks to Jon Limjap for correction :)) job of coding in a cubicle?

  • Is there anything wrong with my texture loading method ?

    - by José Joel.
    I'm a noob in openGL and trying to learn as much as possible. I'm using this method to load my openGL textures, loading every .png as RGBA4444. I'm doing anything incorrect ? - (void)loadTexture:(NSString*)nombre { CGImageRef textureImage =[UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:nombre ofType:nil]].CGImage; if (textureImage == nil) { NSLog(@"Failed to load texture image"); return; } textureWidth = NextPowerOfTwo(CGImageGetWidth(textureImage)); textureHeight = NextPowerOfTwo(CGImageGetHeight(textureImage)); imageSizeX= CGImageGetWidth(textureImage); imageSizeY= CGImageGetHeight(textureImage); GLubyte *textureData = (GLubyte *)calloc(1,textureWidth * textureHeight * 4); // Por 4 pues cada pixel necesita 4 bytes, RGBA CGContextRef textureContext = CGBitmapContextCreate(textureData, textureWidth,textureHeight,8, textureWidth * 4,CGImageGetColorSpace(textureImage),kCGImageAlphaPremultipliedLast ); CGContextDrawImage(textureContext, CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, (float)textureWidth, (float)textureHeight), textureImage); //Convert "RRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAA" to "RRRRGGGGBBBBAAAA" void *tempData = malloc(textureWidth * textureHeight * 2); unsigned int* inPixel32 = (unsigned int*)textureData; unsigned short* outPixel16 = (unsigned short*)tempData; for(int i = 0; i < textureWidth * textureHeight ; ++i, ++inPixel32) *outPixel16++ = ((((*inPixel32 >> 0) & 0xFF) >> 4) << 12) | // R ((((*inPixel32 >> 8) & 0xFF) >> 4) << 8) | // G ((((*inPixel32 >> 16) & 0xFF) >> 4) << 4) | // B ((((*inPixel32 >> 24) & 0xFF) >> 4) << 0); // A free(textureData); textureData = tempData; CGContextRelease(textureContext); glGenTextures(1, &textures[0]); glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, textures[0]); glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGBA, textureWidth, textureHeight, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT_4_4_4_4 , textureData); free(textureData); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); } And this is my dealloc method: - (void)dealloc { glDeleteTextures(1,textures); [super dealloc]; }

  • PHP: Object Oriented Programming -> Operator

    - by oman9589
So I've been reading through the book PHP Solutions, Dynamic Web Design Made Easy by David Powers. I read through the short section on Object Oriented PHP, and I am having a hard time grasping the idea of the - operator. Can anyone try to give me a solid explanation on the - operator in OOP PHP? Example: $westcost = new DateTimeZone('America/Los_Angeles'); $now->setTimezone($westcoast); Also,a more general example: $someObject->propertyName Thanks

  • How to avoid truncation of text with UITableViewCellStyleValue2

    - by Regan
I use this code to make my UITableViewCells cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleValue2 reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; If you're unfamiliar with UITableViewCellStyleValue2, the main text is shown, and then the detail text is shown after it, generally in a different color. However, when I do this, my main text is truncated, if it is longer than a short word. I want to force it to not truncate the main text and show the entire main text, and then the detail text after it. How can I do that?

  • How can I view the history on the trunk from my branch

    - by Ralph Shillington
View History on an file in a branch show only changes since the branch. I need to go back further -- like how created the file in the first place. I've also tried Sidekicks, and it doesn't seem to show history from before the branch either. Short of hunting down the file in the trunk manually, is there a way to view a file's history from the time it was added to now following the path in the branch?
