• Android Apps: What is the recommended targetSdk for broadest appeal?

  I have an Android app that only needs internet access and would like to target API level 3 (1.5) to reach the broadest handset base. However, it appears that targeting API level 3 implicitly requires two additional permissions that are visible to users: modify sd card, and read phone state. See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1747178/android-permissions-phone-calls-read-phone-state-and-identity) So the connundrum, do I target API level 4 and turn away users running 1.5, or do I target API level 3 and turn away users who are upset that my app is requesting so many permissions that it shouldn't need? What is the smartest thing to do here? Are there really a lot of users still limited to API level 3? I appreciate any wisdom offered! Thanks!

• How a servlet can get the absolute path to a file outside of the servlet?

  We have been using System.getProperties("user.dir") to get the location of a properties file. Now that it has been deployed on Tomcat(via servlet), the System call is giving the location as tomcat and not at the location at where the properties file exist. How can we call the the properties file dynamically? Given: Tomcat is not the only way the app will be deployed We have no control on where the app may be placed. Relative paths will not work as that Vista is being used and Vista breaks relative paths. This must work on all OS, including(but not limited to) Linux, XP and Vista. EDIT I implied this, but in case I was not clear enough, I have no way of knowing the path String.

  Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? • Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• ASP.NET MVC - Alternative to Role Provider?

  Hey there, I'm trying to avoid the use of the Role Provider and Membership Provider since its way too clumsy in my opinion, and therefore I'm trying to making my own "version" which is less clumsy and more manageable/flexible. Now is my question.. is there an alternative to the Role Provider which is decent? (I know that I can do custom Role provier, membership provider etc.) By more manageable/flexible I mean that I'm limited to use the Roles static class and not implement directly into my service layer which interact with the database context, instead I'm bound to use the Roles static class which has its own database context etc, also the table names is awful.. • Quickbooks integration: IPP/IDS: can these by used for actual data exchange?

  Poking around options for integrating an online app with Quickbooks, I've made a lot of headway with QBWC, but it's fairly ugly. From an end user perspective the usability of QBWC is pretty low. Intuit is now pushing Intuit Partner Platform (IPP) and Intuit Data Services (IDS). I can't quite figure out what these are about: Is IPP limited to using Flex, or can it work with existing web apps? Are there APIs for actual data exchange? Is it possible to interact with desktop Quickbooks using IPP or IDS? If there is sample code, particularly in Python, some pointers would be great.

  Hello. I have been playing with Compact Framework lately and i need some advice. I have a collection of items. One of the properties on each item is a string type that holds XML. This XML defines image, font, style etc... Im looking for a control (similar to listView) that would replace listBox control. Im not satisfied with listView control, because it is very limited on items level. The control has to be dynamic enough so that my parser could parse the XML and customise the control. For a start i would like to show an image and perhaps some font styles for each row in the control. Here is a sample what im trying to achieve: Any suggestions?

• Excel 2003 - ADDRESS() function issues

  I finally thought I had found a way to acutally use excel productively but the code that I followed does not appear to work. I'm thinking that the code is very limited and can't do what I want but I thought I'd ask to confirm - maybe it is my function that is the problem. I want to calculate the sum of a row of values for the previous month based on how many days we are into this month (i.e. It is the 20th of April so I want to sum the first 20 days of March to compare against.) =SUM(G4:ADDRESS(ROW(),7+$BR$3,4)) I basically want to SUM(G4:AA4) and have used the address function to return the cell reference AA4 by taking G4 and adding 20 to the column count. ADDRESS(ROW(),7+$BR$3,4) This successfully returns AA7 as expected HOWEVER, when I try to use the returning value in the SUM() function it throws an error... Am I not able to use this reference in my calculation?

  I have a DataGridView in a VB.NET app that I have limited to cell selection only. The control has two columns, the first is not editable, the second is editable. I have a ContextMenuStrip that provides some additional functionality and I am able to make it appear when an editable cell receives a right click and is not in edit mode. Based on an example in a Microsoft forum, I am able to now show the context menu when an editable cell receives a right click while also in edit mode.   What is the best way to handle mysql database users connection in PHP? I have a web server running a PHP application on MySQL. I have created a database user for the application: dbuser1 with limited access - only for query, insert and update tables. No alter table. Now the question is, should i use the same dbuser1 widely in my scripts, so if there are 100 current people using my system and hence 100 scripts running parallel they all connect to the database with the same dbuser1? or should i create a few users and assign each script a different user or load-balance between the dbusers ?

  I have two lists in python and I want to know if they intersect at the same index. Is there a mathematical way of solving this? For example if I have [9,8,7,6,5] and [3,4,5,6,7] I'd like a simple and efficient formula/algorithm that finds that at index 3 they intersect. I know I could do a search just wondering if there is a better way. I know there is a formula to solve two lines in y = mx + b form by subtracting them from each other but my "line" isn't truly a line because its limited to the items in the list and it may have curves. Any help is appreciated.

• Injecting a response value into a textarea to subsequently post

  I have multiple notes with class=.note and unique id each inside a div. On click of edit I grab the id, show hidden form #noteditor and hide all notes. I am using the load function to get the response (using codeigniter so url does work) and input result in the editorfrorm Textarea id = upnote... Firebug response looks ok and I have tried to inject into a div and this works fine, BUT getting this injto the text area is causing me some headaches. There is also the chance that i am going around this a convoluted way due to my limited knowledge... • Google analytics-style custom report builder UI

  I'm looking for a reporting engine/UI that can be integrated into a product, which has a UI along the lines of Google Analytics' Custom Reports builder. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The data is in our case is not page views/visitors/etc, but is similar in nature, in that there are limited entities or types of data, but each entity has many attributes/columns and many different ways of aggregating data (or in GA-style speak, metrics and dimensions). The analytics-style UI is very intuitive and allows many reports to be created in powerful ways, without having to know SQL. I have preference for a web-based tool (seeing that it is 2010 and this is a web app -- I mention only because it seems the vast majority of reporting tools still have only a non-web-based creation tool).

I assume that those instructions are perhaps no longer valid for the current git version. In the void FluxboxWindow::setupWindow() function I can see no references to CommandRef or frame. I would like to know if it is possible that I could work out where they should go in that function, with only having a limited knowledge? I am still trying to learn programming and don't know enough just yet to work out where they should go. I assume I can't just paste in the suggested lines anywhere in that function, but why not? I can paste the source if needed, but I am unsure where to paste to.

• Limitation of Attachment size when using SMTP

  Hi, I wrote a C++ program to send a mail using SMTP. But when I attach any files I notices that a single file's size always is limited to 808 bytes. As an example if I send a text file with 10 KBs, when I download the attachment it has only text worth 808 bytes. If the large file is a zip file, it gets corrupted in unzipping obviously due to CRC failure. I used a MAPI library to send larger files without a problem. Is this a network limitation of SMTP? Can someone please explain why this is happening?? Thank You!!!

  With my limited experience/knowledge I am using the following structure to generate HTML tables on the fly from MySQL queries: $c = 0; $t = count($results); $table = '<table>'; while ($c < $t) { $table .= "<tr><td>$results[0]</td><td>$results[1]</td> (etc etc) </tr>"; ++$c; } $table .= '</table>'; this works, obviously. But for tables with 300+ rows there is a noticeable delay in pageload while the script builds the table. Currently the maximum results list is only about 1,100 rows, and the wait isn't long, but there's clearly a wait. Are there other methods for outputting an HTML table that are faster than my WHILE loop? (PHP only please...)

  I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? • Version control of Mathematica notebooks

  Mathematica notebooks are, of course, plaintext files -- it seems reasonable to expect that they should play nice with a version-control system (git in my case, although I doubt the specific system matters). But the fact is that any .nb file is full of cache information, timestamps, and other assorted metadata. Scads of it. Which means that limited version control is possible -- commits and rollbacks work fine. Merging, though, is a disaster. Mathematica won't open a file with merge markers in it, and a text editor is no way to go through a .nb file. Has anyone had any luck putting a notebook under version control? How?

  Hi everyone, I'm using ASP.Net but my question is a little more general than that. I'm interested in reading about strategies to prevent users from fooling with their HTML form values and links in an attempt to update records that don't belong to them. For instance, if my application dealt with used cars and had links to add/remove inventory, which included as part of the URL the userid, what can I do to intercept attempts to munge the link and put someone else's ID in there? In this limited instance I can always run a check at the server to ensure that userid XYZ actually has rights to car ABC, but I was curious what other strategies are out there to keep the clever at bay. (Doing a checksum of the page, perhaps? Not sure.) Thanks for your input.

• iPad: How Do I Limit the Number of Tabs in UITabBarController?

  I'm converting an iPhone app to a universal app, which leaves me with a UITabBarController as the root view controller for a UISplitViewController. That is, the tab bar appears at the bottom of the left-hand view when the iPad is in landscape mode. On the iPhone, the system automatically limited the number of tabs shown in the tab bar to 5. But on the iPad simulator (which is all I have at the moment), my tab bar has 8 tabs, including the More tab. What gives? Thanks. Update: Since I had no luck finding an answer to this question, I gave up on using a tab bar interface in my iPad-flavored app. Instead, I added one more level to the navigation controller drill-down. That ends up working fine for this app.
