• permission for "users" directory for a mounted vmdk file

  I mounted one vmdk file in my windows 8 machine and I am able to access all the folders and files except those in "users\ directory. When I try to open, it says I dont have permission. I am not able to give the permission even. Any one can tell me how to open the users directory? I have very important files in the desktop folder which can be acessed through \users\\desktop. What is the alternate way of accessing the folder? I lost the password to boot up the vm image.

• Editing remotely the PHP files on a Centos server

  I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?

• Skydrive unable to create directory

  I have upgraded a desktop PC from windows 8 pro to 8.1 pro. I 8, I had skydrive/desktop & skydrive/MUI. In 8.1, file syncing seems to be ok (as far as I could test it). By the way, I could not start the skydrive MUI app. It says "unable to display files on this PC". IN addition, I cannot turn the "offline file access" on in parameters tab. The option stays greyed. Is there away to fix it ? Thanks.

• RAID 1 in ubuntu 12.04

  Right now I have a small file server to which I have loaded ubuntu 12.04 desktop on a small 160gb harddrive. This harddrive is the primary drive from which the OS boots. I want to move all my data to my file server so it can be shared on the network (contain in 2x2TB harddrives in my desktop. The 2TB drivers are in raid 1 (hardware). I simply want to move them to the file server and set it up so that they are in software raid 1. If at all possible I'd like to be able to do this without losing any info on the drives. I've searched around and the guides i find describe raiding drives for boot driver, but these wouldn't be boot drives just regular storage drives. If someone could tell me how to perform this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

• Remote access over VPN machine

  Here is my scenario. I have Comp1 which has VPN installed on it & working fine. I have made Comp1 as remote enabled as well. Now i want to log in to Comp1 ( remotely) from Comp2. Without starting the VPN, remote desktop works fine from Comp2 to Comp1. When i connect to VPN on Comp1 the remote desktop from Comp2 breaks. Is there a way i can run VPN on Comp1 and be able to access from Comp2 remotely. If there is change in settings, please advice. Regards

• How would I Enable FTP on Home PC (Win7)?

  In my home, all PCs connect through a small router. Some wired and some wireless. Our Media PC (HTPC) is controlled via a Media Center TV style remote, so managing files on it is tedious. I can access all of the files on the HTPC from my desktop PC, but moving a 6 GB file from \\HTPC\Folder1 to \\HTPC\Folder2 involves copying the data to the desktop and then transferring it back. If I were on the HTPC, this would likely be handled by a simple address change for the file (i.e. it would be done almost instantly). I'm thinking if I could get an FTP program to connect to the HTPC, I could simplify things ...but how do I enable that ability on the HPTC? Then, how would I go about connecting to the HTPC? Would I simply enter \\HTPC as the FTP address?

• Left click and enter not working

  Sometimes when I turn on my homemade desktop computer (running 64-bit Windows 7), the left mouse click and enter key doesn't work. They work well in BIOS, as well as on the Windows 7 BCD and login screen. Usually, restarting the computer solves the problem. Why does this keep happening? I've tried: Using other USB ports Refreshing, repairing and reinstalling drivers Changing mouse settings Refreshing mouse profiles My keyboard is a Logitech G510, and my mouse is a Razer Lanchesis 5600. Both work without problems in Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8.1 Preview, and I've been using both on my 64-bit Windows 7 homemade desktop without problems for about a year and a half. I encountered the problems yesterday.

  I need to get my hands on an ISO file for a Linux distribution with a 2.4 kernel. I'm looking for an ISO specifically so I can use it with my Oracle VirtualBox. Since 2.4 is so old these days, I'll explain that I'm looking for it because my company uses an ancient 2.4 uClinux distro on our ancient hardware in our devices. I'd like to run some "desktop" tests using the same kernel version as what's in the hardware. As far as I can tell I can't run uCLinux on a desktop, so next best thing, I'd like to get anything running 2.4.

• Manage 2 displays remotely

  I have a pc with a nVidia Quadro graphic card. The card has 2 DisplayPort outs where 2 40" Full HD TV are connected. I need to run 2 separate fullscreen videos, one each display. The problem is displays are far from the pc station and I cannot control them from there. I tried with a remote desktop connection but when I connect screen 1 shows login and screen 2 simply blackens (I'm logged off). The pc, an HP, also has his native graphics card still installed it would be nice if I could connect there a 15" monitor with the desktop on and use the TVs only as secondary where I can send fullscreen videos. Any clue?

  I would like to run some game on windowed mode, but its hard to see the game when my desktop resolution is huge. One solution could be to change my desktop resolution every time i play the game. But the bad thing is that my screen automatically smoothes the pixels when im using non-native resolutions, and the blurred pixels really makes it ugly and hard to look at. Is there some program to double the pixel size of any opengl/directx window without smoothing the pixels? I've tried multiple magnifying glass programs, but they all seem to make it blurred...

• Roaming Profile to act as a redirected folder? Dropbox in roaming profile is also causing slow login/logou

  As title, what I'm wondering to know is .. if the roaming profile with Windows 2008 R2 Server (I'm talking about V2 profile - Windows7/Windows8) can work as a redirected folder (it can be done with the Desktop, Contacts, Download, AppData, My Documents). The roaming profile is copied at each login (server - client) and at each logout (client - server). This is causing slow login and logout for huge roaming profile. I can't stop the usage of roaming profile since the environment is a School with 1000 users. But I have big issues with users who populate the profile path (which is mapped on "User's File" under Windows7/8) with other stuff than the already redirected Desktop and My Document. A typical problem is given by the Dropbox folder... Any solution?

  Moved a SATA HD from one PC to another. Copied almost all the files from old drive to new, except for one folder ("oldFolder") and it's subfolders and files. I tried to copy just a single file (to simplify things): Can't copy that file to same directory. (get above error) CAN copy file to Desktop. Can not copy files' container folder to Desktop. Under Properties for that OldFolder: Read Only is Checked. Security: Everyone set to Allow everything except "special permissions" All users are set to allow WRITE.

Now I have a software whose extension is .ipa I am looking for a way to run this file either on Windows or on Linux. There exists Wine which can run .exe files on Linux, similarly is there something which can run .ipa either on linux or windows?? I am also comfortable with getting into virtualization and emulation to get the software work!

• Issue with Administratively Assigned Offline Files

  I need to use Administratively Assigned Offline files in conjunction with folder redirection, but user home folders live on 26 different shares. Do I just need to add 52 file paths similar to: \\server\shareA\%username%\Desktop \\server\shareA\%username%\My Documents \\server\shareB\%username%\Desktop \\server\shareB\%username%\My Documents ... and so on? Or do I need to create 26 GPOs, one for each share; or is there an easier way to do it? Edit: The solution provided by @berniewhite in the comments of using %homeshare% has resolved the issue and Administratively Assigned Offline Files is now working well.

  I have a special file that I edit daily, it is somewhat like a large text file but a little more to it then that. I have a copy on my main desktop and a copy of the file on a USB drive as well. I would like a way to open up either file (from the USB drive or from my desktop drive) and be able to edit and save the file and have it stay updated on both drives. • Unable to use strong encryption

  So I am exploring Apache to create a simple example: the default page and a directory "secure". I everyone to be able to access the server but, when one wants to access the "secure" directory, I the connection to use strong encryption. I am using apache2.4. However this is not working and I don't know why! One kind looks like Windows Explorer, with the tree on the left containing Favorites, Libraries, Computer, etc. The other kind contains a vertical toolbar, called the Places Bar. The Windows Explorer-style Open/Save dialog box can be customized by adding your own folders to the Favorites list. You can, then, click the arrows to the left of the main items, except the Favorites, to collapse them, leaving only the list of default and custom Favorites. The Places Bar is located along the left side of the File Open/Save dialog box and contains buttons providing access to frequently-used folders. The default buttons on the Places Bar are links to Recent Places, Desktop, Libraries, Computer, and Network. However, you change these links to be links to custom folders of your choice. With just a few tweaks you can make Live Mail minimize to the system tray just like in earlier versions of Windows. Windows Live Mail in Windows Vista In Windows Vista you could minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray if desired using the context menu… Windows Live Mail in Windows 7 In Windows 7 you can minimize the app window but not hide it in the system tray. The Hide window when minimized menu entry is missing from the context menu and all you have is the window icon taking up space in your taskbar. How to Add the Context Menu Entry Back Right click on the program shortcut(s) and select properties. When the properties window opens click on the compatibility tab and enable the Run this program in compatibility mode for setting. Choose Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu and click OK. Once you have restarted Windows Live Mail you will have access to the Hide window when minimized menu entry again. And just like that your taskbar is clear again when Windows Live Mail is minimized.   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address.
