• Apache & SVN on Ubuntu - Post-commit hook fails silently, pre-commit hook "Permission Denied"

  I've been struggling for the past couple days to get post-commit email notifications working on my SVN server (running via HTTP with Apache2 on Ubuntu 9.10). SVN commits work fine, but for some reason the hooks are not being properly executed. Here are the configuration settings: - Users access the repo via HTTP with the apache dav_svn module (I created users/passwords via htpasswd in a dav_svn.passwd file). dav_svn.conf: <Location /svn/repos> DAV svn SVNPath /home/svn/repos AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I created a post-commit hook file that writes a simple message to a file in the repository root: /home/svn/repos/hooks/post-commit: #!/bin/sh REPOS="$1" REV="$2" /bin/echo 'worked' > ${REPOS}/postcommit.log I set the entire repository to be owned by www-data (the apache user), and assigned 755 permissions to the post-commit script when I test the post-commit script using the www-data user in an empty environment, it works: sudo -u www-data env - /home/svn/repos/hooks/post-commit /home/svn/repos 7 But when I commit on a client machine, the commit is successful, but the post-commit script does not seem to be executed. I also tried running a simple script for the pre-commit hook, and I get an error, even with an empty pre-commit script: "Commit failed (details follow): Can't create null stdout for hook '/home/svn/repos/hooks/pre-commit': Permission denied" I did a few searches on Google for this error and I presume that this is an issue with the apache user (www-data) not having adequate permissions, specifically to execute /dev/null. I also read that the reason post-commit fails silently is because that it doesn't report with stdout. Anyway, I've also tried giving the apache user (www-data) ownership of the entire repository, and edited the apache virtualhost to allow operations on the server root, and I'm still getting permission denied /etc/apache2/sites-available/primarydomain.conf <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! • PHP DOM vs SimpleXML for Atom GData feed parsing

  I'm building a library to access the Google Analytics Data Export API. All the data the library accesses is in Atom format and utilises numerous different namespaces throughout. My experiments with the API have used SimpleXML for parsing so far, especially as all I have been doing is accessing the data held within the feed. Now I'm coming to write a library I am wondering whether forging ahead with SimpleXML will be adequate or whether the enhanced functionality of the DOM module in PHP would be of benefit in the future. I haven't written much code for this part of the library yet so the choice is still open. I have read that the PHP DOM module can be a better choice if you need to build an XML DOM on the fly or modify an existing one, but I'm not entirely sure I would need that functionality anyway due to the nature of the API (no pushing data to the server, for instance). SimpleXML is certainly easier to use and I have seen people saying that for read-only situations it is all you need. Essentially the question is, what would you use? Compatibility will not be an issue as the server configuration will match the application's requirements. Is it worth building the library with PHP DOM in mind or should I stick with SimpleXML for now? Update: Here are two examples of the kind of feeds I will be dealing with: Account feed Data feed

• DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? • Getting a gestureoverlayview

  I have been using some nice tutorials on drawing graphics on my android. I wanted to also add in the cool gesture demo found here: http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/gestures.html That takes these lines of code: GestureOverlayView gestures = (GestureOverlayView) findViewById(R.id.gestures); gestures.addOnGesturePerformedListener(this); This is fine and dandy yet I realize in my demo i'm trying to build using code from "Playing with Graphics in Android". The demos make sense, everything makes sense but I found out by using: setContentView(new Panel(this)); as is required by the Playing With Graphics tutorials, then the findViewById seems to no longer be valid and returns null. At first I was about to post a stupider question as to why this is happening, a quick test of playing with the setContentView made me realize the cause of findViewById returning null, I just do not know how to remedy this issue. Whats the key I am missing here? I realize that the new Panel is doinking some reference up but I am not sure how to make the connection here. For example, when creating a site column it somehow stores and uses the URL when it was created, and when trying to edit the field definition through the Site Column Gallery (fldedit.aspx page in the LAYOUTS) you end up throwing the error below. • Phantom class definitions in Flash CS5?

  I'm trying to get FlashPunk working in the Flash CS5 IDE (don't ask), and I'm having trouble getting it to compile. In strict mode, the error I'm getting is: net/flashpunk/FP.as, Line 95 1119: Access of possibly undefined property _inherit through a reference with static type World. Typically, this means that there is a missing variable definition or the class being compiled cannot see that variable. Presumably, the framework compiles for others, so I'm pretty sure this isn't the issue, but I went in anyway and made sure the variables existed and set these variables to public (they were set to internal), but the error still occurred. It was almost like the compiler wasn't seeing the property definitions. If I turn off "strict mode", the app compiles, but then I get this error: ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on World(). Expected 2, got 0. Now, World is a class in the FlashPunk package. In the class definition for it, the constructor does not expect any arguments: public function World() { ... ...and yet, for some reason, Flash is expecting two arguments. So it appears that everything is correct, but Flash is somehow expecting something different than what World's constructor defines. These two issues combined makes it seem like Flash is getting some other phantom version of another class called "World" which has two constructor arguments and different properties. I've gone in and checked the ActionScript settings. The only external-to-project stuff referenced is the default "$(AppConfig)/ActionScript 3.0/libs". And I'm not using any of my own code other than a single "Main.as" file that super's Engine to set a few parameters - certainly, there's no new World class. With a generic name like "World", I thought perhaps this is a reserved class name within Flash or something, maybe imported from the default libs mentioned above, but some Googling turning up empty seems to put the lie to that. Any idea what might be going on?

  I am trying to host my site that uses DotNetOpenAuth (OpenID) behind ISA 2006 (reverse proxy), and after it authenticated with a provider (such as Google), and it returns with a URL with %253A in the URL. However, ISA HTTP filter rejects the request. What I need to do is, on ISA web publishing rule, right click config HTTP policy properties uncheck "Verify Normalization" and it worked. Is this a problem on ISA 2006 generally? Are other firewalls having similar problems? Or, is it an OpenID or DotNetOpenAuth issue? Is it safe to disable Normalization checking on ISA? According to MSDN, quote "Web servers receive requests that are URL encoded. This means that certain characters may be replaced with a percent sign (%) followed by a particular number. For example, %20 corresponds to a space, so a request for http://myserver/My%20Dir/My%20File.htm is the same as a request for http://myserver/My Dir/My File.htm. Normalization is the process of decoding URL-encoded requests. Because the % can be URL encoded, an attacker can submit a carefully crafted request to a server that is basically double-encoded. If this occurs, Internet Information Services (IIS) may accept a request that it would otherwise reject as not valid. When you select Verify Normalization, the HTTP filter normalizes the URL two times. If the URL after the first normalization is different from the URL after the second normalization, the filter rejects the request. This prevents attacks that rely on double-encoded requests. Note that while we recommend that you use the Verify Normalization function, it may also block legitimate requests that contain a %."

This check box or radio button is very often accompanied by a text box where the user is supposed to fill out what this Other is. How do you usually handle this set up? What kind of markup do you use? What do you require in your validation? Do you use java script for anything? For example: How do you make the form accessible? Do you use and how do you use the label tag, for example. Do you connect the check box and text box in any way with some javascript? For example, do you activate the text box when the check box is checked? Do you check or uncheck the check box automatically if the text box is filled out or cleared? Do you let validation fail with error messages if the check box is checked but the text box is not filled out, or if the text box is filled out but the check box is not checked? Or do you just consider it not filled out and not checked? Very unsure how to best deal with this issue, so any advice and examples are most welcome c",)

• Practical value for concurrent-request-timeout parameter

  In the Seam Reference Guide, one can find this paragraph: We can set a sensible default for the concurrent request timeout (in ms) in components.xml: <core:manager concurrent-request-timeout="500" /> However, we found that 500 ms is not nearly enough time for most of the cases we had to deal with, especially with the severe restriction seam places on conversation access. In our application we have a combination of page scoped ajax requests (triggered by various use actions), some global scoped polling notification logic (part of the header, so included in every page) and regular links that invoke actions and/or navigate to other pages. Therefore, we get the dreaded concurrent access to conversation exception way too often, even without any significant load on the site. After researching the options for quite a bit, we ended up bumping this value to several seconds (we're debating whether to bump it up to 10s), as none of the recommended solutions seemed able to solve our issue completely (even forcing a global queue for all the ajax requests would still leave us exposed to a user deciding to click a link right when one of our polling calls was in progress). And we'd much rather have the users wait for a second or two instead of getting an error page just because they clicked a link at the wrong moment. And now to the question: is there something obvious we're missing (like a way to allow concurrent access to conversations and taking care of the needed locking ourselves, for instance :)? How do people solve this problem (ajax requests mixed with user driven interaction) in seam? Disabling all the links on the page while ajax requests are in progress (as suggested by one blog page) is really not a viable option. Any other suggestions? TIA, Andrei

• Is an LSA MSV1_0 subauthentication package needed for some impersonation use cases?

  Greetings, I'm working with a vendor who has implemented some code that uses a Windows LSA MSV1_0 subauthentication package (MSDN info if you're interested: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa374786(VS.85).aspx ) and I'm trying to figure out if it's necessary. As far as I can tell, the subauthentication routine and filter allow for hooking or customizing the standard LSA MSV1_0 logon event processing. The issue is that I don't understand why the vendor's product would need these capabilities. I've asked them and they said they use it to perform impersonation. The product definitely does need to do impersonation, but based on my limited win32 knowledge, they could get the functionality they need using the normal auth APIs (LsaLogonUser, ImpersonateLoggedOnUser, etc) without the subauthentication package. Furthermore, I've worked with a number of similar products that all do impersonation, and this is the only one that's used a subauthentication package. If you're wondering why I would care, a previous version of the product had a bug in the subauthentication package dll that would cause lockups or bluescreens. That makes me rather nervous and has me questioning the use of such a low-level, kernel sensitive interface. I'd like to go back to the vendor and say "There's no way you could need an LSA subauth package for impersonation - take it out", but I'm not sure I understand the use cases and possible limitations of the standard win32 authentication/impersonation APIs well enough to make that claim definitively. So, to the win32 security gurus out there, is there any reason you would need an LSA MSV1_0 subauthentication package if all you were doing is impersonation? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

• Is there a way to use the transactions in TCPDF when extending it with FPDI?

The issue I'm having is that as soon as I use the startTransaction() I get the following error: TCPDF ERROR: Cannot access protected property FPDI:$numpages / Undefined property: FPDI::$numpages and the script ends (because of the die in the TCPDF::Error() method). Here is the code I'm using: $pdf = new FPDI(); // add a page $pdf->AddPage(); $pdf->startTransaction(); $pdf->Cell(0, 0, 'blah blah blah'); $pdf->rollbackTransaction(); $pdf->Output( . time() . Any ideas why the response is empty? Thanks in advance. EDIT I left off a query string parameter in the url. I also had &count=100 which I have now corrected. It seems to work for values of 50 and below but returns nothing when larger. This works ok when in the browser, but not for this web request. It makes me think the issue is that the response is large and HttpWebResponse is not handling that for me the way I have it set up. Just a guess though.

• Izpack: Creating custom panels

  Hi, I am trying to create a custom panel for an IzPack installer. This means that I have to extend IzPanel. However, it appears that if I do this, the extended panel needs to be in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. Then I found this post, which stipulates that: As such, you must include installer.jar from the lib folder of IzPack in the build path of your custom panel project. Your custom panel /must/ extend com.izforge.izpack.installer.IzPanel. Furthermore, it /must/ reside in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. On top of it all, your build jar's name /must/ be the same as the unqualified name of your custom panel class. I take issue with the 1st and 4th points. They imply that I have to create an additional JAR file for each custom IzPanel that I create. Also, I would have to modify the IzPack installation by adding these JARs to one of its subdirectories. Is this article outdated (2008) and can it be safely ignored, or is this still true? If not how can I avoid this and simply have the extended IzPanel on the classpath instead? Thank you!

• Custom Django admin URL + changelist view for custom list filter by Tags

  In django admin I wanted to set up a custom filter by tags (tags are introduced with django-tagging) I've made the ModelAdmin for this and it used to work fine, by appending custom urlconf and modifying the changelist view. It should work with URLs like: http://127.0.0.1:8000/admin/reviews/review/only-tagged-vista/ But now I get 'invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'only-tagged-vista', error which means it keeps matching the review edit page instead of the custom filter page, and I cannot figure out why since it used to work and I can't find what change might have affected this.   I have created a Custom Server Control that renders the SiteMap as a pure UL for CSS styling. At run-time it renders properly but in VS2008 Design View VS shows this error: Error Rendering Control - menuMainAn unhandled exception has occurred. The provider 'AspNetXmlSiteMapProvider' specified for the defaultProvider does not exist in the providers collection. I have 'AspNetXmlSiteMapProvider' specified in web.config as per here : link text While I am happy that the code runs properly, the Designer error is bothersome if the underlying issue might cause the code to break in some circumstances so I need to understand what is going on... The code explicitly references the sitemap in the Render Method with : int level = 1; string ul = string.Format("<div class='{0}' id='{1}'>{2}</div>", CssClassName, this.ID.ToString(), EnumerateNodesRecursive(SiteMap.RootNode, level)); output.Write(ul); and the recursive method called referrences SiteMap.CurrentNode. Otherwise there are no explicit sitemap references in the code. Does anyone have any ideas why Deisgner is complaining?

• Problem with extended ASCII characters in web page/master page

  I have some localization problems in my webpage. There are basically two problems (that I suspect have a different sulution, but they are conseptually linked) First problem is this: I have a website that is using a master page. All text from the page is fine, but all text that comes from the master page file, get scrambled norwegian characters. For example Ø shows up as Ø. It seems that all characthers in the extended ASCII table gets scrambled this way. Afterwards, if I open the master page in Notepad the Ø looks normal, but if I remove the Ø and write a new Ø manually, then save the file from Notepad, and then open the website in the browser, it looks fine and the Ø is shown properly. So it seems that Visual Studio saves the characters wrongly in the master file, but correct for the aspx file. Any clue here? The second issue is norwegian characters coming from jQuery. All of these characters get's replaced by a questionmark with a black box around it. Here, modifying the js file in Notepad does not help, and it still display scrambled in the browser. Any input here would be appreciated.

  I'm trying to use DbLinq with a SQLite database, but I'm running into a problem when I try to cast an ITable as a Queryable<TEntity>. There is a known bug in DbLinq (Issue 211), which might be the source of my problem, but I wanted to make sure my code is sound and, if it is, find out if there might be something I can do to work around the bug. Here is the generic repository method that attempts to do the cast: public IQueryable<TEntity> GetAll() { return Table.Cast<TEntity>(); // Table is an ITable } This compiles, but if I pass in the interface IPerson for TEntity and the type of the entities in the table is Person (where Person : IPerson), I'm getting this error from DbLinq: S0133: Implement QueryMethod Queryable.Cast. Why am I trying to do this? I have a library project that doesn't know the type of the entity until runtime, but it does know the interface for the entity. So, I'm trying to cast to the interface type so that my library project can consume the data. Questions: Am I attempting an impossible cast or is this definitely a bug in DbLinq? How else could I go about solving my problem?

  I am trying to understand what is going on in a SWC that I am importing from Flash CS4 into Flex Builder 3. Specifically I am using a SWC supplied by a Designer as the animation for a custom preloader (a subclassed DownloadProgressBar). The issue I am trying to understand is, once the FlexEvent.INIT_COMPLETE is fired, I cleanup by removing the swc by running this : removeChild(myPreloader); myPreloader = null; though even after I have removed this (which is successful, as I have checked by comparing this.numChildren before and after the call) the key framed animation still continues to run (not visibly). This has been detected by the Designer placing a trace in the time line of the animation (in Flash). Can anyone tell me why is it, that even after I have removed the animation from the subclassed DownloadProgressBar, it still keeps running ? Also, is it standard practice when importing SWCs to manage the cleanup of resources from the Flash side of things (much like releasing memory in obj-c). I find it counter intuitive that removing the child from the Flex side does not stop the animation. Any clues to this would be greatly appreciated.

• Microsoft Reporting 2005 and Report Viewer Report ASP.Net Session Has Expired on Load

  At my job, I have been tasked with fixing an error with our reporting server. That error is ASP.Net Session Has Expired. This error occurs when the Visual Studio ReportViewer 2005 Control attempts to load a report. We are trying to host this report to users hitting our Internet exposed Windows 2003 Server running IIS 6.0. The reportviewer control is attempting to load this report from a second server running Microsoft SQL 2005 w/Reporting Services. The SQL server is not exposed to the Internet. Here is the weird thing. This error never occurs on the development box. When it is transferred to the production IIS server, the error starts to occur. It only happens every time the report is first loaded. If the browser's refresh button is clicked 5-10 times, the report will finally load correctly. I have reproduced this same error on the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, IE 7, and IE 8. The report only takes 10-20 seconds to load. I have tried timeouts in the 300+ second range on the reporting server/iis production server. I have tried a few options like Async (which causes images not to load properly) and setting the session mode to iproc with a high timeout value in the Reporting Server's web.config. I have also tried using the reporting server's IP address in the report viewer's code instead of the server name. I plan on verifying a picture loading issue which I also read about tomorrow when I get into work. I am unsure what service packs Visual Studio 2005 and the MSSQL server are running. Was an update released to fix this problem that I could not find? Does anyone have a fix for this?

• MVC ASP.NET, ObjectContext and Ajax. Weird Behaviour

  Hi, i've been creating a web application in mvc asp.net. I have three different project/solutions. One solution contains the model in EF (DAL) and all the methods to add, update, delete and query the objects in the model, the objectcontext is managed here in a per request basis. Other solution contains a content management system in wich authorized users insert, delete, update and access objects through the DAL mentioned before. And the last solution contains the web page that is accessed by all users and where the only operations executed are selects, no update, inserts or deletes here. All the selects are executed against the DAL mentioned before (the first solution). The problem here is that i'm not sure whether an HttpContext lifespan ObjectContext is the best solution. I have a lot of ajax calls in my web app and i'm not sure if an httpcontext could interfere with the performance of the application. I've been noticed that in some cases, specially when someone is working in the content manager inserting, updating or deleting, when you try to click on any link of the user web application (the web app that is accessed by any user - the third one that i mentioned before) the web page freezes and it remains stucked transferring data. In order to stop that behaviour you have to stop and refresh or click several times on the link. Excuse me for my bad english. I hope you could understand and could help me to solve this issue. • Excel Regex, or export to Python? ; "Vlookup" in Python?

  heya, We have an Excel file with a worksheet containing people records. 1. Phone Number Sanitation One of the fields is a phone number field, which contains phone numbers in the format e.g.: +XX(Y)ZZZZ-ZZZZ (where X, Y and Z are integers). There are also some records which have less digits, e.g.: +XX(Y)ZZZ-ZZZZ And others with really screwed up formats: +XX(Y)ZZZZ-ZZZZ / ZZZZ or: ZZZZZZZZ We need to sanitise these all into the format: 0YZZZZZZZZ (or OYZZZZZZ with those with less digits). 2. Fill in Supervisor Details Each person also has a supervisor, given as an numeric ID. We need to do a lookup to get the name and email address of that supervisor, and add it to the line. This lookup will be firstly on the same worksheet (i.e. searching itself), and it can then fallback to another workbook with more people. 3. Approach? For the first issue, I was thinking of using regex in Excel/VBA somehow, to do the parsing. My Excel-fu isn't the best, but I suppose I can learn...lol. Any particular points on this one? However, would I be better off exporting the XLS to a CSV (e.g. using xlrd), then using Python to fix up the phone numbers? For the second approach, I was thinking of just using vlookups in Excel, to pull in the data, and somehow, having it fall through, first on searching itself, then on the external workbook, then just putting in error text. Not sure how to do that last part. However, if I do happen to choose to export to CSV and do it in Python, what's an efficient way of doing the vlookup? (Should I convert to a dict, or just iterate? Or is there a better, or more idiomatic way?) Cheers, Victor

• Issues in Convergence of Sequential minimal optimization for SVM

  I have been working on Support Vector Machine for about 2 months now. I have coded SVM myself and for the optimization problem of SVM, I have used Sequential Minimal Optimization(SMO) by Mr. John Platt. Right now I am in the phase where I am going to grid search to find optimal C value for my dataset. ( Please find details of my project application and dataset details here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2284059/svm-classification-minimum-number-of-input-sets-for-each-class) I have successfully checked my custom implemented SVM`s accuracy for C values ranging from 2^0 to 2^6. But now I am having some issues regarding the convergence of the SMO for C 128. Like I have tried to find the alpha values for C=128 and it is taking long time before it actually converges and successfully gives alpha values. Time taken for the SMO to converge is about 5 hours for C=100. This huge I think ( because SMO is supposed to be fast. ) though I`m getting good accuracy? I am screwed right not because I can not test the accuracy for higher values of C. I am actually displaying number of alphas changed in every pass of SMO and getting 10, 13, 8... alphas changing continuously. The KKT conditions assures convergence so what is so weird happening here? Please note that my implementation is working fine for C<=100 with good accuracy though the execution time is long. Please give me inputs on this issue. Thank You and Cheers.
