• How to switch users in a smooth way in a Point-Of-Sale system?

  I am designing a Point-Of-Sale system for a small shop. The shop just have one Point-Of-Sale but often they are one to three users (sellers) in the shop. Each user have their own user account in the system so they login and logout very often. How should I design the login/logout system in a good way? For the moment the users don't use passwords, because it takes so long time to type the password each time they login. The Platform is Windows Vista but I would like to support Windows 7 too. We use Active Directory on the Network. The system is developed in Java/Swing for the moment, but I'm thinking about to change to C#.NET/WPF. I am thinking about an SmartCard solution, but I don't know if that fits my situation. It would be more secure (which I like) but I don't know if it will be easy to implement and smooth to use, i.e. can I have the POS-system running in the background or started very quickly when the users switch? Are SmartCard solutions very expensive? (My customers are small shops) Is it preferred to use .NET or Java in a SmartCard solution? What other solutions do I have other than passwords/no passwords/smartcards? How should I design the login/logout system in a good way? Is there any good solution using SmartCards for this purpose? I would like suggested solutions both for C#.NET/WPF and Java/Swing platforms. I would like suggested solutions both for Active Directory solutions and solutions that only use one user profile in Windows. How is this problem solved in similar products? I have only seen password-solutions, but they are clumsy.

• JQuery not Working in chrome?

• Lost Update Anomaly in Sql Server Update Command

  Hi, I am very much confused. I have a transaction in ReadCommitted Isolation level. Among other things I am also updating a counter value in it, something similar to below: Update tblCount set counter = counter + 1 My application is a desktop application and this transaction happens to occur quite frequently and concurrently. We recently noticed an error that sometimes the counter value doesn't get updated or is missed. We also insert one record on each counter update so we are sure that records have been inserted but somehow counter fails to update. This happens once in 2000 simulaneous transactions. I seriously doubt it is a lost update anomaly I am facing but if you look at the command above, it's just update the counter from its own value: if I have started a transaction and the transaction has reached this statement, it should have locked the row. This should not cause lost update, but it's happening somehow. Is the thing that this update command works in two parts? Like first it reads the counter value (during which it doesn't get the exclusive lock) and then writes the new calculated value (when it does get an exclusive lock)? Please help, I have got really confused.

• running bash scripts in php

  I have two computers. On the first computer I have apache running with all my web code. On the second computer I have large amounts of data stored with a retrieval script (the script usually takes hours to run). I am essentially creating a web UI to access this data without any time delay. so I call: exec("bash initial.bash"); this is a driver script that is in my Apache folder. It calls the script on the other computer. calling: ssh otherMachine temp.bash& this script invokes the data retrieval script on the second computer. If I call initial.bash in the terminal, everything works smoothly and successfully, but if I call it in my PHP file, then all my commands in initial.bash run, with the exception of ssh otherMachine temp.bash&. I put the & at the end of that, so that temp.bash will run in the background, since it does take a few hours to complete. I am not sure why the nested script is not running when invoked by Apache. Is there a better alternative than using exec or shell_exec to call a script, which ultimately calls another script. The reason I don't call a script on the second machine directly is because of the time it takes the program to run. Shell_exec does not render the php page until the script is complete.

• BackgroundWorker Not working in VSTO

  I have a background worker. Before I invoke the worker I disable a button and make a gif visible. I then invoke the runworkerasync method and it runs fine until comleteion. On the 'RunWorkerCompleted()' I get a cross thread error. • Soft Paint Bucket Fill: Colour Equality

  I'm making a small app where children can fill preset illustrations with colours. I've succesfully implemented an MS-paint style paint bucket using the flood fill argorithm. However, near the edges of image elements pixels are left unfilled, because the lines are anti-aliased. This is because the current condition on whether to fill is colourAtCurrentPixel == colourToReplace (the colours are RGB uints) I'd like to add a smoothing/treshold option like in Photoshop and other sophisticated tools, but what's the algorithm to determine the equality/distance between two colours? if (match(pixel(x,y), colourToReplace) setpixel(x,y,colourToReplaceWith) How to fill in match()? • ASP.NET MVC and WCF

  I'm working my way into MVC at the moment, but on my "To learn at some point" list, I also have WCF. I just wonder if WCF is something that should/could be used in an MVC Application or not? The Background is that I want a Desktop Application (.NET 3.5, WPF) interact with my MVC Web Site, and I wonder what the best way to transfer data between the two is. Should I just use special Views/have the controllers return JSON or XML (using the ContentResult)? And maybe even more important, for the other way round, could I just call special controllers? Not sure how Authorization would work in such a context. I can either use Windows Authentication or (if the Site is running forms authentication) have the user store his/her credentials in the application, but I would then essentially create a HTTP Client in my Application. So while MVC = Application seems really easy, Application = MVC does seem to be somewhat tricky and a possible use for WCF? I'm not trying to brute-force WCF in this, but I just wonder if there is indeed a good use case for WCF in an MVC application.

• Silverlight performance with a large number of Objects Org Chart.

  Hello, I’m working on a org chart project(SL 3) and I’m seeing the UI thread hang when the chart is building around 2,000 nodes and when it renders it takes about a min and then FPS drop to a crawl. Here is the code flow. Page.xaml.cs calls a wcf service that returns a list of AD users. Then we use Linq to build a collection of nodes to bind to the Orgchart.cs OrgChart.cs is a canvas and displays a collection of nodes and connecting lines. Node.cs is a canvas and has user data can contain children nodes. NodeContent.xaml is a user control that has borders so I can set the background, textblocks to display user's data, Events that handle the selected and expaned nodes, and storyboards that resize the nodes when they are selected or expanded.I noticed during hours of debugging , here in the InitializeComponent(); section where it loads the xaml it seems to be where the preformance hit is happening. System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent(this, new System.Uri("/Silverlight.Custom;component/NodeContent.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)); So I guess I have two questions. Can threading help in any way with the UI thread hanging while drawing the nodes? How can I avoid the hit when calling this user control? Any advice or direction anyone can lend would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, KC

• WinForms Load Event / Static Initialization Strangeness

  Background I'm troubleshooting an WinForms 2.0 program that's already been burned to CD for distribution to an internet-challenged target audience. Some users are experiencing a fatal error that I can reproduce locally. Reproducing the Error I get the fatal error when I log into my Vista box using a standard user that I just created, even if I run the program as administrator. I do not get the fatal error when I log in as local administrator. I'm not sure that being administrator is necessarily the trigger (since runas did not help). I have reproduced this half a dozen times under each account with consistent results. When logged in as local admin, that sequence completes just fine. When logged in as my test standard user, ApplySkin is always called a second time while skin is still null, causing a second attempt to load, causing the file to be locked on the second attempt. The error handling is draconian at this point and the program terminates. The Question While this code can be easily fixed, I would like to understand why the error is happening only in some cases.

I wish to call Threading.SynchronizationContext.Current.Send which expects a delegate of type Threading.SendOrPostCallback to be passed to it. The background is here, but because I wish to both pass in a string to MessageBox.Show and also capture the DialogResult I need to define another delegate within. I am struggling with the VB.NET syntax, both from the traditional delegate style, and lambda functions. • Insert video clip in a lyx presentation and play it in GNU/Linux.

  How can I insert a video clip into a presentation created in Lyx? Have seen http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=48. It works, but there the video starts in the background in an external player. I would prefer it to be played in the presentation itself. If an external player is used it it should at least start in the foreground. But the presentation takes the foreground. Using evince in GNU/linux as pdf viewer. Beamer is used as a presentation template. Is it possible to play a video file in an embedded player in the presentation itself? Created an example presentation. • Before data is entered, is there a way to make a grouped table graphic placeholder?

  I have a grouped table with 3 sections, each section with a title. The 1st and 3rd sections always have only 1 row of information so before any user data is entered, I just put some words like "Enter Data Here..." as placeholder text. This text is edited (replaced) by the user with their own actual data. No problem. The 2nd section however will contain several rows of information entered by user and I'd prefer not to enter placeholder data in row 0, having the user Edit the first row of data then Add subsequent rows. If the numberOfRowsInSection is set to 0, the title for the 3rd section comes close to the title for the 2nd section and it looks ugly. The best that I could come with, and I don't know to do it, is to have a fake graphic placeholder on the striped background (between the 2nd and third titles) that looks like a single row in the 2nd section, put "Enter Data Here..." text in the graphic, and then the first row of actual data entered and all subsequent rows will cover it up. Can anyone tell me how to do this or offer a better suggestion. Thanks.

• Format Java Code in Netbeans / Eclipse, but save it differently

  Hi all, I asked a related question before, but I guess the root of the question is. Let's say I have 2 developers on the team and they both like to look at code in different formats. One likes the braces to be on a new line and the other doesn't. The approach I was using before is that anytime we run a build, the code is automatically formatted according to the Java/Sun standards using Jalopy; however, I would like the developers to be as happy as possible. They can change the font size, font color, background color, etc. If I am currently using the Jalopy Maven plugin to format code, can/should I write a hook to SVN that calls mvn jalopy:format on the project when it's checked in? Is this reliable? That solution doesn't work 100% because it requires the developer to manually format the source code to their liking every time they open a file that hasn't been formatted yet. I was thinking an IDE plugin would be nice as it could automatically format the source to their liking and then save it as another. What other options do I have to ensure the code is formatted nicely on checkin? Thanks, Walter

IE is a little better, you get the blur event but you don't get the click event on the draggable element. Now what am i doing is that i get the uninstall string of the specific application from the registry and use System.Diagnostics.Process to run UninstallString. • Non-Relational Database Design

  I'm interested in hearing about design strategies you have used with non-relational "nosql" databases - that is, the (mostly new) class of data stores that don't use traditional relational design or SQL (such as Hypertable, CouchDB, SimpleDB, Google App Engine datastore, Voldemort, Cassandra, SQL Data Services, etc.). They're also often referred to as "key/value stores", and at base they act like giant distributed persistent hash tables. Specifically, I want to learn about the differences in conceptual data design with these new databases. What's easier, what's harder, what can't be done at all? Have you come up with alternate designs that work much better in the non-relational world? Have you hit your head against anything that seems impossible? Have you bridged the gap with any design patterns, e.g. to translate from one to the other? Do you even do explicit data models at all now (e.g. in UML) or have you chucked them entirely in favor of semi-structured / document-oriented data blobs? Do you miss any of the major extra services that RDBMSes provide, like relational integrity, arbitrarily complex transaction support, triggers, etc? I come from a SQL relational DB background, so normalization is in my blood. That said, I get the advantages of non-relational databases for simplicity and scaling, and my gut tells me that there has to be a richer overlap of design capabilities. What have you done? • Displaying shifts on a timetable/calendar using C#

  I am very much a beginner and have experience of SQL and a tiny amount of VBA. What I am looking to do is create a tool to pull shift times from a database and to display them on a timetable/calendar. It will be part of a desktop application that the (very tech illiterate) end users will use to view and amend shift patterns. In essence it will be a grid with days on one axis and people on the other (I would however like to have the blocks proportional to shift length). In my mind it would potentially be a simple Gantt chart. All computing stuff I’ve learnt has been through trial and error and I want to use this project to get a much better understanding of C# as well as to get to the end product. I have been reading around for ways to tackle the problem and my issue is creating the timetable framework to which I will bind the data. I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Do you know of good resources which will either start me on the road to designing my own interface or give a basic framework I can adapt? • WCF Double Hop questions about Security and Binding.

  Background information: .Net Website which calls a service (aka external service) facade on an app server in the DMZ. This external service then calls the internal service which is on our internal app server. From there that internal service calls a stored procedure (Linq to SQL Classes), and passes the serialized data back though to the external service, and from there back to the website. We've done this so any communication goes through an external layer (our external app server) and allows interoperability; we access our data just like our clients consuming our services. We've gotten to the point in our development where we have completed the system and it all works, the double hop acts as it should. However now we are working on securing the entire process. We are looking at using TransportWithMessageCredentials. We want to have WS2007HttpBinding for the external for interoperability, but then netTCPBinding for the bridge through the firewall for security and speed. Questions: If we choose WS2007HttpBinding as the external services binding, and netTCPBinding for the internal service is this possible? I know WS-* supports this as does netTCP, however do they play nice when passing credential information like user/pass? If we go to Kerberos, will this impact anything? We may want to do impersonation in the future. If you can when you answer post any reference links about why you're answering the way you are, that would be very helpful to us. Thanks!

Each tab has a datagridview that may eventually hold up to 25,000 rows of data (with about 6 columns each). I have successfully managed to bind the grids when the tab page is loaded and it works fine for a few records, but the UI freezes when I bound the grid with 20,000 dummy records. The "freeze" occurs when I click on the tab itself, and the UI only frees up (and the tab page is rendered) once the bind is complete. I communicated this to the client and mentioned the option of paging for each grid, but she is adament w.r.t. NOT wanting this. My only option then is to look for some asynchronous method of doing this in the background. I don't know much about threading in windows forms, but I know that I can use the BackgroundWorker control to achieve this. My only issue after reading up a bit on it is that it is ideally used for "long-running" tasks and I/O operations. My questions: How does one determine a long-running task? How does one NOT MISUSE the BackgroundWorker control, ie. is there a general guideline to follow when using this? (I understand that opening/spawning multiple threads may be undesirable in certain instances) Most importantly: How can I achieve (asychronously) binding of the datagridview after the tab page - and all its child controls - loads.
