• Terminal / Panel PC - Single Server Solution: Client/Server or RDP?

  Hi, Our current setup involves a touch screen panel pc with embedded windows, that is connected via network to a server / dedicated pc, within the same physical location. Each of our 'units' has this hardware setup. For a quick resolution we deploy our application to the dedicated pc, and have the panel pc remote desktop to an account which then activates the application. This works but seems a little clunky / rough approach. We did this because the panel pc is rather limited. Now that we have more time, I was wondering if I should separate the application into a gui / application. Deploy the gui logic on the panel pc, and the business/database logic on the dedicated pc. The app is in Java so I was wondering what technology would be best? I was thinking of using RMI, but its not really a client/server app, as there is only one client. Should I stick with RMI, or use Sockets or something else? It will be easy to implement as the application is old, and manually wraps and unwraps data which passes through one class / method call to remote services. All I would have to do is 'RMI' this one method call, and the app will do its own stuff. Cheers.

  I am trying to set up an alarm that will run in the background and trigger (eventually) a save event. At the moment I simply have this code attached to a button. Press the button and the alarm should start leaving Toast messages behind as an indication that it is functioning. At the moment everything runs except the onReceive in the BroadcastReceiver is never triggered. My second try was to set width for list of choices after creating Ajax.Autocompleter $("isearch_choices").setStyle({width: "320px"}); but it didn't work too :(. No more ideas :(. • faster way to draw an image

  im trying to combine two images into a single image. unfortunately this has to be done very quickly in response to a user sliding a UISlider. i can combine the two images into a single image no problem. but the way I'm doing it is horribly slow. the sliders stick and jump rather frustratingly. i don't think i can throw the code into a background thread because i would run out of threads to quickly. i haven't actually tired that yet. below is my code. any ideas on how to speed it up would be helpful. • Excel VBA Select Case Loop Sub

  In my excel file, I have a table setup with formulas. with Cells from Range("B2:B12"), Range ("D2:D12"), and etc every other row containing the answers to these formulas. for these cells (with the formula answers), I need to apply conditional formatting, but I have 7 conditions, so I've been using "select case" in VBA to change their interior background based on their number. I can input my data, let the formulas work, and when everything is ready, I can run the macro and format those specific cells. I want an easy way to do this, obviously I could waste a load of time, typing out all the cases for every cell, but I figured it'd be easier with a loop. how would I go about writing a select case loop to change the formatting on a a specific range of cells every other row? thank you in advance.

  Suppose I attach an onblur function to an html input box like this: <input id="myInput" onblur="function() { ... }"></input> Is there a way to get the ID of the element which caused the onblur event to fire (the element which was clicked) inside the function? How? For example, suppose I have a span like this: <span id="mySpan">Hello World</span> If I click the span right after the input element has focus, the input element will lose its focus. How does the function know that it was mySpan that was clicked? PS: If the onclick event of the span would occur before the onblur event of the input element my problem would be solved, because I could set some status value indicating a specific element had been clicked. PPS: The background of this problem is that I want to trigger an Ajax.AutoCompleter control externally (from a clickable element) to show its suggestions, without the suggestions disappearing immediately because of the onblur event on the input element. So I want to check in the OnBlur function if one specific element has been clicked, and if so, ignore the blur event.

• Most efficient way to send images across processes

  Goal Pass images generated by one process efficiently and at very high speed to another process. The two processes run on the same machine and on the same desktop. The operating system may be WinXP, Vista and Win7. Detailled description The first process is solely for controlling the communication with a device which produces the images. These images are about 500x300px in size and may be updated up to several hundred times per second. The second process needs these images to display them. The first process uses a third party API to paint the images from the device to a HDC. This HDC has to be provided by me. Note: There is already a connection open between the two processes. They are communicating via anonymous pipes and share memory mapped file views. Thoughts How would I achieve this goal with as little work as possible? And I mean both work for me and the computer. I am using Delphi, so maybe there is some component available for doing this? I think I could always paint to any image component's HDC, save the content to memory stream, copy the contents via the memory mapped file, unpack it on the other side and paint it there to the destination HDC. I also read about a IPicture interface which can be used to marshall images. What are your ideas? I appreciate every thought on this!

The actual validation is happening, but the XAML that's supposed to update the UI and set the style isn't happening. • Design pattern to use instead of multiple inheritance

  Coming from a C++ background, Im used to multiple inheritance. I like the feeling of a shotgun squarely aimed at my foot. Nowadays, I work more in C# and Java, where you can only inherit one baseclass but implement any number of interfaces (did I get the terminology right?). For example, lets consider two classes that implement a common interface but different (yet required) baseclasses: public class TypeA : CustomButtonUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } public class TypeB : CustomTextUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } Both classes are UserControls so I cant substitute the base class. Both needs to implement the DoMagic function. My problem now is that both implementations of the function are identical. And I hate copy-and-paste code. The (possible) solutions: I naturally want TypeA and TypeB to share a common baseclass, where I can write that identical function definition just once. However, due to having the limit of just one baseclass, I cant find a place along the hierarchy where it fits. One could also try to implement a sort of composite pattern. Putting the DoMagic function in a separate helper class, but the function here needs (and modifies) quite a lot of internal variables/fields. Sending them all as (reference) parameters would just look bad. My gut tells me that the adapter pattern could have a place here, some class to convert between the two when necessery. But it also feels hacky. I tagged this with language-agnostic since it applies to all languages that use this one-baseclass-many-interfaces approach. Also, please point out if I seem to have misunderstood any of the patterns I named. In C++ I would just make a class with the private fields, that function implementation and put it in the inheritance list. Whats the proper approach in C#/Java and the like?

  I am currently unsatisfied with most, if not all, web-based collaboration tools I've ever used. Examples of what I'm considering a "web-based collaboration tool" are TWiki, WebEx, etc. What I have in mind of developing is to develop my own. The target "market" is for software/hardware developers who will likely be working on separate projects linked by a common goal. Example: You work at a company who is designing a brand new printer. So, one man is working on the ink cartridge, another on the paper feed, one on the circuitry of the printer and one more is working on the drivers. What I would like to make (unless it already exists) is a website that, upon loading, presents the user with a web that has each project within it's own bubble, graphically. These bubbles would all be linked to the central bubble of "[Company Name]". Upon selecting an individual bubble the browser would focus and zoom in on that project bubble and expand more information (in bullets or with more affiliated bubbles) about subprojects, progress, setbacks, etc. Then, at a terminal "node" (i.e. a bubble with no sub-bubbles) a selection would then load a page with information relevant to that node. That's a lot of monologue. In short, I want to know how I might approach this. My background is with algorithmic use of Python and C++. I've never done interactive web design like this; though, I have gone through the W3C tutorials on HTML4/5. I'm willing to learn a new language I'm just wondering which language/set of languages seem(s) most appropriate for this project. Thanks, world, for imparting your knowledge to me. • Unity to dispose of object

  Is there a way to make Unit dispose property-injected objects as part of the Teardown? The background is that I am working on an application that uses ASP.NET MVC 2, Unity and WCF. We have written our own MVC controller factory that uses unity to instantiate the controller and WCF proxies are injected using the [Dependency] attribute on public properties of the controller. At the end of the page life cycle the ReleaseController method of the controller factory is called and we call IUnityContainer.Teardown(theMvcController). At that point the controller is disposed as expected but I also need to dispose the injected wcf-proxies. (Actually I need to call Close and/or Abort on them and not Dispose but that is a later problem.) I could of course override the controllers' Dispose methods and clean up the proxies there, but I don't want the controllers to have to know about the lifecycles of the injected interfaces or even that they refer to WCF proxies. If I need to write code myself for this - what would be the best extension point? I'd appreciate any pointer.

I have read a bit on all the different Java web frameworks out there: JSF, Stripes, Wicket, Tapestry etc. But I would like to hear from people with real-life expertise with these frameworks. Of course I want a framework that is up to date, supports AJAX, is cool and so on, but one of my main criteria is the ability to somehow create reusable components / tags. The customer needs to be able to move tags/components around without too much problem in order to customize it for their specific needs. In ASP.NET Webforms I would use custom controls and user controls for this, and in ASP.NET MVC I would use user controls as well as home made custom controls. So what Java frameworks excel in this? My own superficial research seems to conclude that JSF supports some kind of custom controls (Bear in mind i am not only talking about layout reuse, but also behavior reuse, so if for example the customer / client wants a customer list on page x and not only on page Y, he would simply put in a <jr:CustomerList runat="server" .... /> (fictional example with ASP.NET Webforms syntax)).

• Moving a ASP.NET application to the cloud

  I am new to cloud computing, so please bear with me here. I have an existing ASP.NET application with SQL Server 2008 hosted on a Virtual Private Server. Here's what it briefly does: The front end accepts user's requests and adds them to a DB table A Windows Service running in the background picks up the request, processes it and sets a flag. The Windows Services also creates a file for the user to download. User downloads file I'd like to move this web application with the service to the cloud. The architecture I envision is that I'll have 1 Web server in which I will install the front end and the windows service. I'll also have a cloud files server for file storage. The windows service should somehow create a file and transfer it to the cloud file server (I assume this is possible?) My questions: Does the architecture look like I am going in the right direction? I know Amazon has been providing cloud services for a long time. If I want to do minimal changes to my application, should I go with Amazon, Rackspace, Azure or some other provider? I understand that I would not only pay for file storage and web server but also for the bandwidth of users downloading the file and the windows servic uploading the file to the cloud server. Can I assume these costs are negligible? Should I go with VPS + Cloud Files combination to begin with? Any other thoughts/suggestions?

• LaTeX printing only first two pages of a document

  I am working in LaTeX, and when I create a pdf file (using LaTeX button or pdfLaTeX button or using yap) the pdf has only the first two pages. No errors. It just stops. If I make the first page longer by adding text, it still stops at end of 2nd page. Any ideas? • CakePHP: email validate action doesn't work when clicking on the email link

  Hi, We've created the email validation part of our site. We built the site using CakePHP BTW. The problem is that it doesn't work when we click on the link in the email. The email is sent as plain text. A weird thing is that when we paste the link on the address bar, it works. Also when clicking on the link using Gmail and desktop email clients, it works as well. Other email providers doesn't work. EDIT: Additional info: Example link for the validation: http://localhost/users/validate/validatecodeblah12c023 When it's working it should login the user and redirect to the user dashboard. It goes to the front page when it's not working (see description above). Additional info 2: I did compare the results using Live HTTP headers and I found out that the only time it doesn't push through (goes to the login page for some reason) is when there's a 'Referrer: h ttp://mail.yahooblahblah...' Gmail for some reason doesn't have a 'Referer' line in it's headers.
