• Ubuntu and mysql server. Something isnt allowing me to connect

  I have a question about mysql settings http://serverfault.com/questions/94054/remote-connections-and-mysql-on-ubuntu/94088#94088 now i want to figure out why i cannot connect. I made sure bind-address was commented out. I can ping the server within the VM but i cannot ping it from within the VM using mysqladmin --protocol=tcp --host=self_ip ping. I also followed along and check if my ports were open and they look like they are. I setup samba on that VM and can access that with no problem as well. It looks like ubuntu does not have a firewall either (i figured this out before) so i am stumped why the server isnt allowing my connection. Apparently the config file works on another person side http://www.pastie.org/742545 I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS just because of 'support' reasons. So hopefully this will be 'easy'?

• SQL Server 2008 CPU usage goes to 100% - troubleshooting help needed?

  I have a fairly powerful database server having SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. There is only one database on it which is being accessed from 2 servers (around 5/6 applications). The problem is as soon as applications start pointing to the database, system's CPU usage goes upto 100% with sqlserver itself using 95+%. I have checked profiler, there aren't any heavy queries running there. I have checked active connections, they are hardly 150. Still CPU usage is around 100% and applications are experiencing slow response/connection to database server are getting refused. Database grus, I really need some ideas here. Thanks.

• I can't do a Remote Assistance session to a Windows XP box from Windows 7.

  My Mom's computer is running Windows XP, and my desktop running Windows 7. She's having some technical issue, so I want to do a Remote Assistance session to her machine. However, no matter what I've tried, the Remote Assistance program doesn't connect successfully. I've verified that the Windows Firewall (on both my and her machines) is configured properly to allow Remote Assistance program to go through. What's interesting is that I have the same problem when I try to do Remote Assistance from my desktop to my laptop, which is also running Windows XP. However, when I try to connect to my girlfriend's machine, which is runninng Windows 7 this time, the connection is successful. So in the end, I guess there must be some incompability between Windows 7 and Windows XP. Does anyone experience the same issue? How did you resolve it?

• DSL vs Cable latency

  currently I have a 10Mbps DSL line and I'm thinking to switch to a cable since they got 100Mbps for a little less than double the price I'm paying for 10Mbps. In other words the cable company is offering 100Mbps for the price of 20Mbps DSL. Since 10Mbps is more than enough for me I am worried about the latency, I saw this that is just a guy experiment, that shows that cable and DSL are the same in practical terms, and this but I couldn't grasp it, not sure if it is helpful. So my question is if there's any practical difference between cable and DSL, mainly in latency terms but I would be also interested in other advantages/disadvantages. This is for my home connection, I work from home but I don't run any server, I most of the time code, skype and eventually game.

• Connect to development server via switch?

  I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it. • How to disable internet access at night on the router?

  I have an internet connection that I'd like to be enabled only during the day. With multiple household internet devices, this would need to be something disabled at the level of the router. I don't believe the router offers this sort of functionality, but I'm reasonably familiar with setting up web servers and the like, and I'm wondering if I can set up some sort of proxy server on the internet that the router must go through and have that proxy only active at certain times of day. It's a bit vague I know, but is something like this even possible? If not, are there other solutions to the problem?

• iPhone always assigned wrong ip

  for some reason most of the time my iPhone connects to the home network the ip address seems wrongly assigned as it 'loses connection' even even with strong reception. If I change the ip address to a static from 168.2.10 to 168.2.15 works fine until it appears to renew back to the prior. I am using a power-plug extender from the modem to router. Then have a laptop Printer playstation tv and another iPhone that always connect fine. The modem also has a crappy wireless which I haven't connected any devices to. I'm sure the forum will have a simple answer!

I have two laptops A and B Earlier both A and B were able to connect to my home internet through the ethernet and wireless. Suddenly, the laptop B can no longer connect to XYZ or through ethernet. When I do plug the wire, i get the connection icon all green but when I try to access any web page it errors out (page not found) But strangely laptop B connects to my neighbours wireless SSID "ABC". I have also tested laptop B with other networks and it connects fine. Laptop A and many other devices still connect fine with my home wireless "XYZ" Strange thing is when my laptop B connects wireless through XYz, it gets the IP address but then none of the browsers (chrome,firefox, IE) can show any web pages. What settings should I be checking on laptop B that is preventing it to connect to my home internet. Thank you

• impossible to connect.. days trying..

  I have a problem: I am on Debian. I configured my nic with a static ip (192.168.1.56). When I try to connect to a network, initially with ifconfig eth2 I get (correctly): eth2 inet addr:192.168.1.56 .... inet6 addr: fe80:221:ff:fe96:4598/64 but after a few seconds the 102.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too. When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect. At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.   I was asked this today and I honestly did not know the answer. If you connect using a connection string without sspi to a server is there any way a 3rd party can intercept on the wire the password used to log in? "Data Source=MyServer;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=sa;Password=CanThisBeSniffed;" I am not asking about MiTM attacks just someone listing on the same computer or on the same hub on the network with wireshark or something similar running. I fired up wireshark myself and did not see it in plain text but it could be a simple obfuscation or proper encryption, I just wanted to know which.

• web browser not opening

  I had a virus adware on my desktop. I cleaned it using AVG. Now no browser will open, though the Internet connection is fine. When trying to open any browser I get a dialog box that says it can't find that location. This happens to all my browsers. I even downloaded firefox on my laptop and installed it on the desktop and still get the same response - Windows can't find the location. This all started when opening an email. • Is there a way to get att.net email to stay connected?

  My att.net account at home (wireless connection) has been bad for the last several days: I have to hit F5 quite a few times to "unfreeze" it (I can read an email or two, then it freezes, etc.). At work (company LAN) it's even worse: I can connect to the site and see that I have email, but can't open any of the emails - and the screen constantly refreshes (every couple of seconds) with a "Connecting..." message. It apparently connects and disconnects over and over again, but never stays connected long enough to actually access the email. Is there a way either to fix this OR forward my att.net (from home) to my work email address (accessible via MS Outlook)? Or set it up from work using Outlook to pull in my att.net email? I have Outlook 2003 at work.

• cannot at all find sql instance (while installing an asp.net app on IIS)

  So I'm really not a DBA, I'm an app dev. I had to install my asp.net mvc3 app on my client's(a large company) IIS6 + Win2k3 machine, with absolutely no help from their sysadmins. The final problem now is SQL Server 2008 r2, after figuring out how to create a login from windows, my app and sqlcmd.exe always complains it cannot find a sql server instance!! I have all the sql services (in services.msc) running to Log On as the local system. I can login fine with SQL Server Management Studio with Windows Auth. I created my database, my asp.net app needs/uses windows auth. But for the love of God, whatever I do my app always complains it cannot find the instance. (Also tried running SQL CMD and it complains of the same thing too!) My data base connection string looks like this: Data Source=machinename\username;Initial Catalog=myDataStore;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True Machinename\user is the same thing that shows up on the sql server management studio login if I choose windows authentication right?

• Sharing internet through a wireless ad-hoc in Windows 7

  I'm actually requesting a workaround to share a PPoE wired Internet connection between two laptops using wireless. I've tried sharing it the usual way... New Ad-hoc = Click turn On sharing = etc. I've tried changing all the settings I could find related to the two networks on both machines. Conclusion: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Is it really buggy, or are my hands growing from the wrong place? I'm almost sure I'm not the only one having this kind of problem. What is the easiest/correct workaround ?

• Auto logon to internet provider

  We use wireless internet access. The wireless is secured and to get an IP address, you provide the right key. That is setup just fine. However, on top of that, the first time we access the internet, a browser page appears and we have to enter a password. then we have access to the internet for a period of time. How can the password step be automated? I also have a web-based printer that doesn't work (except via USB connection) because it can't get out to the web. I can't change the router settings. Is there anything I can do to get the printer working and automatic the access?

  A client is using PHP to connect to MySQL. The PHP scripts and the MySQL database are located on 2 different Linux servers. He complained that database connections were being dropped or timed out and asked me to take a look. Is there any place in MySQL that can show me what and how many connections have been dropped or timed out? I looked into slow query log and didn't see anything. Any suggestions on how to diagnose this dropped/timed out database connection problem? Thanks EDIT: Slow query log is enabled in my.cnf: log-slow-queries=/var/log/mysql-slow-queries.log And when I do a mysql> show global status; I got: | Slow_queries | 11402347 | So there are a lot of slow queries. But the file /var/log/mysql-slow-queries.log doesn't exist. Why is that?

• Problem with Win7 connecting to Internet

  Hello, I have had Windows 7 for about a year now and for the first four months it worked perfectly. But for the last 8 months it has been horrible. It will connect to the Internet for about 5 minutes and then just lose connection. It will reconnect in about 5 minues but then it just keeps disconnecting. I ran a virus scan about 2 weeks ago and I found a Trojan on my PC which I removed and dealt with. It was fine after that but now for these last couple days it has been just as bad as before. I think a virus is causing this but I will read any suggestions and tips to help me solve this problem. Thank you. • Computer connects to lan, but not the internet

  I have a computer with Vista Home that can connect to the router, but it cannot get on the internet. I cannot ping google.com, the request times out. I've tried this on two separate networks and have no trouble with other computers connecting. I've renewed ipconfig, reset winsock, updated the wireless adapter, and the hosts file looks fine. I've tried disabling the firewall as well as a direct wired connection. I did a scan with Norton and it didn't find anything. Is there anything else I can try before resorting to a system restore? Update (Copied from Answer) Windows Update was able to find updates and install them (though, they could have already been downloaded previously). When I pinged Google by using their IP 66.102.9.103, it said it lost 25 percent of the packets. I successfully flushed the DNS but it didn't help. Also, I found safe mode with networking works fine.

• Problems with connecting to wireless network on windows 7

  I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 (Home premium) 64 bit edition installed on it. I use a Wi-Fi router to browse the net. My problem is, I lose the network connection every 10 minutes or so. The network icon on the system tray shows the refresh icon and the status as "identifying network". The network is fine and works fine with my phone. I saw on the net this may be caused if I have enabled IPv6, so I disabled it but still problem persists. When I look at the event log I see the following entries: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xXXXXXXXX. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." I have also installed VirtualBox(32 bit edition) on the laptop. Does anybody any solution to this?

• What security changes are necessary when connecting DSL modem directly to PC instead of router?

  Windows XP I have a user with a single PC that was connected to the internet via a standard home router. The router is now having hardware-related issues and to save money, they're considering connecting the PC directly to the DSL modem since they don't need to share the internet connection or need wireless functionality. If they decide to do that, I'm concerned that this will introduce additional security concerns. Is the Windows Firewall sufficient and Microsoft Security Essentials sufficient for protecting a computer directly connected to a DSL Modem? Or is other security software needed here? Ideally, I'd like to avoid having third-party firewall software constantly bringing up alerts and asking them to approve everything. Also, just to clarify, their use cases are just internet browsing and email.

• IPSec 2 hosts (preshared key) - network shares very slow

  I'm testing a IPSec config between 2 hosts, using ipsec auth with preshared key, very simple configuration. (I want to start with a IPSec simple preshared key config, and then step up to a Certificate or kerberos...) The problem is: The connection is working but when accessing network file shares the first time it's very slow. On the same host i'm testing the shares, i have an IIS site running, and the performance seems very normal, fast. Does anybody know why does SMB shares are soo slow? Is there any ipsec policy options that should be tweaked? Thanks

• MySQL max_user_connections

  We're releasing a site in a couple of weeks that has been developed on a local machine but now when were testing on dev server we get MySQL error 'max_user_connections'. We have talked to the host company (biggest in sweden) and they say that we don't close our connections properly. But the thing is that we user the EXACT same code on another host where it works. And I also added echo "closed"; in the database_close function so that now in the very bottom of very page there is "closed". To me this means that we do close the connection, anyone got any idea of what could be wrong? We connect through the PHP PDO function and closes it by setting it to 'null', all according to the manual.
