• How do I set permissions structure for multiple users editing multiple sites in /var/www on Ubuntu 9

  I'm setting up an Ubuntu server that will have 3 or 4 VirtualHosts that I want users to be able to work in (add new files, edit old files, etc.). I currently plan on storing the sites in /var/www but wouldn't be opposed to moving it. I know how to add new users, I know how to add new groups. I'm unsure of the best way to handle users being only able to edit some sites. I read over the answers here in this question, so I was thinking I could setup a group and add users to that group, but then they'd all have essentially the same permissions. Am I just going to have to assign each user specific permissions? Or is there a better way of handling this? Added: I should also note, that I'll have each user login in via SSH/sFTP. The users would never need to do anything else on the server.

• Fix/Bypass "Cannot connect to the real website-blocked" error in Google Chrome with OpenDNS blocking

  I have a large problem with Chrome in my organisation. I use DNS to manage web site blocking, for sites which are not appropriate and are potentially a risk to the organisation where I do this. I only want to use Chrome over the network, as Internet Explorer has compatibility problems with some sites that we use (We cannot change this either or use different sites). Therefore using internet explorer is not a solution. I do not want to install a different browser, for multiple reasons. Mainly because of the difficulty of rewriting the customised add-ons that we use. However, recently, I have had lots of problems with Chrome SSL Errors. I cannot use my custom OpenDNS block pages, which uses the contact form to request an unblocking. Chrome often blocks OpenDNS for sites (a good example is Facebook) that request HTTPS. Some sites like https://internetbadguys.com (OpenDNS example) This means that chrome refuses to load the blocking page, explaining that the site is blocked. Instead they often call IT support, but they want a solution, as they are sick of getting lots of SSL errors. I have tried looking into ways to turning this off. I have tried: Typing "proceed". That didn't work. Typing "proceed", pressing enter. Didn't work I cannot find phishing and anti-malware any more in Chrome, from the internet guides. Not using HTTPS. However there is an automatic redirect to HTTPS on most sites. Therefore the error keeps coming up. Checking my clocks. They were correct. Does anyone have an idea on how to disabling, bypassing or working around this "feature"? EDIT: This is an example what I am talking about - I found that on google images. I do not block google. EDIT 2: My clocks are correct. I cannot stop using OpenDNS either. EDIT 3: My question is: How do I stop chrome from refusing to load pages that are blocked by OpenDNS, where the server has explicitly requested HTTPS.

• How do I boot Ubuntu Cloud images in vmware?

  I want to run an Ubuntu cloud image on on VMWare. I've gotten pretty far but want to know how to set the OVF properties in a way that VMWare understands in order to pass parameters to cloud-init. This is what I've done: Install VMWare Player 4.0.4, using the vmware workstation 8.0.2 / player 4.0.2 fix for linux 3.2+ patch to get around the compilation failure for virtual ethernet module. Download precise-server-cloudimg-amd64.ovf, and also the QCOW2 .img file (220MB) Run qemu-img convert -O vmdk precise-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.img precise-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.vmdk to convert the image from QCOW2 to VMDK Edit the OVF to change the extension and ovf:size on the <File> element and set ovf:format="http://www.vmware.com/interfaces/specifications/vmdk.html#sparse" on the <Disk> element. Edit the OVF to remove all the <Property> elements because vmplayer was complaining about unrecognised elements. Run the OVF in vmplayer. Alternatively, run ovftool to convert to vmx and run the vmx. Unfortunately I can't log in as "ubuntu" at the prompt because the OVF properties haven't been provided to cloud-init. How should I do this?

• How do I know if I have KMS enabled?

  How can I check if KMS is enabled in my kernel? I've compiled mine with KMS radeon modeset defaulting to 1, but I still suspect that it is not enabled. • Postfix: How to apply header_checks only for specific Domains?

  Basically what I want to do is rewriting the From: Header, using header_checks, but only if the mail goes to a certain domain. The problem with header_check is, that I can't check for a combination of To: and From: Headers. Now I was wondering if it was possible to use the header_checks in combination with smtpd_restriction_classes or something similar. I've found a lot information about header_checks and multiple header fields, when searching the net. All of them basically telling me, that one can't combine two header for checking. But I didn't find any information if it was possible to only do a header check if a condition (eg. mail goes to example.com) was met. Edit: While doing some more Research I've found the following article which suggests to add a Service in postfix master.cf, use a transportmap to pass mails for the Domain to that service and have a separate header_check defined with -o. The thing is that I can't get it to work... What I did so far is adding the Service to the master.cf: example unix - - n - - smtpd -o header_checks=regexp:/etc/postfix/check_headers_example Adding the followin Line to the transportmap: example.com example: Last but not least I have two regexp-files for header checks, one for the newly added service, and one to redirect answers to the rewritten domain. check_headers_example: /From:(.*)@mydomain.ain>(.*)/ REPLACE From:[email protected]>$2 Obviously if someone answers, the mail would go to nirvana, so I have the following check_headers defined in the main postfix process: /To:(.*)<(.*)@mydomain.example.com>(.*)/ REDIRECT [email protected]$2 Somehow the Transport is ignored. Any help is appreciated. Edit 2: I'm still stuck... I did try the following: smtpd_restriction_classes = header_rewrite header_rewrite = regexp:/etc/postfix/rewrite_headers_domain smtpd_recipient_restrictions = (some checks) check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/rewrite_table, (more checks) In the rewrite_table the following entries exist: /From:(.*)@mydomain.ain>(.*)/ REPLACE From:[email protected]>$2 All it gets me is a NOQUEUE: reject: 451 4.3.5 Server configuration error. I couldn't find any resources on how you would do that but some people saying it wasn't possible. Edit 3: The reason I asked this question was, that we have a customer (lets say customer.com) who uses some aliases that will forward mail to a domain, let's say example.com. The mailserver at example.com does not accept any mail from an external server that come from a sender @example.com. So all mails that are written from example.com to [email protected] will be rejected in the end. An exception on example.com's mailserver is not possible. We didn't really solve this problem, but will try to work around it by using lists (mailman) instead of aliases. This is not really nice though, nor a real solution. I'd appreciate all suggestions how this could be done in a proper way.

• reinstalling phpmyadmin

  EDIT:: installed mysql-server but no phpmyadmin (since phpmyadmin was installed before mysql, that resulted an error). How to reinstall phpmyadmin with database (there is no phpmyadmin datbase)? unstalling it and reinstalling it didn't help. i was trying to install phpmyadmin (and zend framework) through synaptic manager but in the middle i was prompted for password i thought it was phpmyadmin password and i proceeded but i got error and i aborted. and then again i tried to reinstall, it reinstalled but i am not getting phpmyadmin. EDIT: It's doing something now, but the whole grayscale seems extremely blue. It's like I'm looking at it through dark blue sunglasses. • Cannot mount a CIFS network share over VPN

  I have setup u VPN connection to our Windows 2008 server at the office and it seems to work fine. For some reason, however, I still am not able to access the network shares over a VPN connection using my standard fstab entries. When I am physically connected to the network, it works fine, but now when trying this over VPN I get the following error: mount error(110): Connection timed out Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) My /etc/fstab looks like this: //server2008/share /mnt/share cifs iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/aron/.smbcredentials,uid=1000 0 0 As said, it works fine when physically connected, but over VPN it just wont work. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: It seems the Windows firewall is making things harder on me. When I turn it off, I get a bit further, although I still get the following error message: Unable to find suitable address. The strange thing is that I have file sharing added as an exception to the firewall. Port 137-139 and port 445 are open, which should suffice, shouldn't it? EDIT Jan 20th: Still not working. When I have the firewall turned on, it times out. When I turn it off, I get the not suitable address error. Turning the firewall off is not an option, by the way.

IN A 111.222.333.2 EDIT: actually, come to think of it, it could be said the same for MX records. Any breaking differences? EDIT 2: then again, MX allow use of priority values so its a different case, in that one-ip-per-domain is more useful sometimes.

EDIT 2: After a long break from this problem, I've just run a few tests again and found out that, although my macbuntu still fails to connect to my home wi-fi network, it works just fine at my university... Does that help in anyway? My home network is managed by a dual-band (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) 802.11n cisco e4200 wi-fi router.

• how to troubleshoot sql server issues

  i have an ASP .net application with sql server database, and i am wondering if you can give your ideas on how to troubleshoot the following issue: i can insert / update / delete from any table, but i have one page that uses transactions to insert into different tables. the c# code is correct and very simple, but it fails. i used the sql profiler to see how my app interacts with the DB, especially that the app is using stored procedures, i can catch the exec procedure statement and run it manually from SSMS and it works fine, but the same stored procedure fails from the application!!! which lead me to think that issue is coming from the user account and settings, i am no expert in sql server and wondering if anyone can explain how to verify the required settings for user account. thanks EDIT: in web.config here is how i reference my connection <connectionStrings> <add name="Conn" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=myDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=DbUser;Password=password1254_3" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"> </connectionstring> EDIT: i will try to describe the process here: 1- i begin a transaction 2- i call a stored proc to insert (which succeeds) and return the scope identity ( that will be used in the next step) 3- i call another stored procedure to insert some more info + scope identity from step 2, which is a foreign key here 4- i get error, foreign key violation 5- transaction rolled back, now tables empty again... thanks

• How many hours of use before I need to clean a tape drive?

  I do backups to a HP Ultrium 2 tape drive (HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448). The drive has a 'Clean' LED that supposedly will light up or blink when the drive needs to be cleaned. The drive has been in use since october 2005, and still the 'Clean' light has never been lit. The drive statistics are: Total hours in use: 1603 Total bytes written: 19.7 TB Total bytes read: 19.3 TB My question is: How many hours of use can I expect before I need to clean the drive? Edit: I have not encountered any errors using the drive. I do restore tests every two months, and every backup is verified. Edit 2: The user manual says: "HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape drives do not require regular cleaning. An Ultrium universal cleaning cartridge should only be used when the orange Clean LED is flashing." Update: It is now May 2010 (4.5 years of use), and the LED is still off, I have not cleaned, backups verify and regular restore tests are done.

• Visio Losing My Diagrams!

  I've created under "Static Model-Top Package" 4 different sequence diagrams. Once I tried creating the fifth it won't keep it. I try to double click and open it and it opens the 4th one. I can delete the 5th one and create a new one. I can edit this but as soon as I go to another diagram, I've lost it and can only go back to the 4th one and edit that even though I right clicked the 5th one and selected "Open Sequence". What is going on? Has anyone else seen this Visio issue?

• Web Development Environment: How to distribute edited hosts files over bunch of mac machines?

  I am doing some research to prepare some web development environment for our small(10ppl and growing) new office. User Case: For each new web project usually we create new alias on an Apache server someproject.companywebsite From my understanding in order to see this website locally for all the rest of our team(including mangers and directors) they will need to edit hosts file (e.g. "192.168.1.10 someproject.companywebsite"), and like that each time for a new project(can be 2-5 each week) Solution: And I looking for a solution how to edit this hosts file only once and distribute it over all mac machines in our network at once or much more flawlessly than poking around with each machine every time over and over again. Is that possible? Or that a very wrong way of doing that? Perhaps we better set up own local dns server and point to it our router? Though own dns server a bit concerns me because of might be some network interruption and others lags, if you know what I mean. Or perhaps there are another workflows for that? What's the best way for such things? So I'll be so grateful to hear some advices from experienced admins. I couldn't find that info on internet, so if you know where to read about it, point me in a right direction. Thank you in advance Alex

  My /etc/resolv.conf constantly get a mysterious entry, i run a home network with ipv6 provided by ravd, the interface is auto-configured by Network manager (all name server lookups are lost when this line is first in my /etc/resolv.conf) . Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) **# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN** nameserver fd00::1 nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int When ping is working cat /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int So something is putting fd00::1 at start of file, not if I ping6 fd00::1 I get Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibited To diagnose this I ran the router with single cable to connected to ubuntu machine. Ran tcpdump + restarted network on ubuntu. "tcpdump ip6 -e -i eth0 | grep fd00" finds nothing, it's not being advertised via the network.. The only hit I got was when an upstream router refused a connection attempt from the ubuntu machine to fd00::1.   Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

  I have been using iMovie'09 for two days only. I need to edit some videos and make a DVD for a friend. It happens to me that I want to join two clips together to form one continuous clip, so when I export the video to iDVD, they won't be treat as two different chapters. The most obvious way to do so is to choose Edit-Join Clip, but that menu item was always gray out when I chose two adjacent clips. I tried to highlight two/three adjacent clips, two apart clips etc, but it is still grayed out. I googled for a while but it seems no one knows, anyone knows how to use the "Join Clip"?

• ASP.Net Fails to Detect IE10 without .Net Hotfix

  Benny Mathew recently alerted us that he couldn’t create, edit or delete posts on GeeksWithBlogs in IE10 (Windows 8). It turns out the problem is that ASP.Net fails to detect IE10 causing a javascript error on postback. We’ll be applying a hotfix to the .Net framework on GWB shortly to fix this issue. In the meantime you can use the simple workaround outlined below. (Note that if you create posts using Windows Live Writer you won’t have this issue creating posts). Log into your GWB Account and go to the “Posts” page. Hit F12 to bring up the developer window in IE10. Click on the ‘Browser Mode’ option and change it to IE9. You should now be able to create/edit/delete posts in GWB. Note this also fixes any other sites in IE10 that might not yet have the hotfix applied. You can tell if the hotfix is the likely culprit if you’re using IE10 and see the following error in the Web Developers Console area: SCRIPT5009: '__doPostBack' is undefined Let us know ASAP if there are other issues you are experiencing that aren’t fixed by this workaround!

  I have memcached (c:\memcached) running on port 11211 and I have a problem configuring IIS manager I created a site in IIS manager binded to port 11211 and if I have memcached running and try and start the site it says "the process cant access the file because it is being used by another process" If I stop memcached and start the site in IIS (and enable directory browsing) I can access the directory structure http://localhost:11211 ok, if I then try and start memcached it errors with error 1053 "could not start the memcached server on local computer" I know I'm doing something fundamentally wrong here! just cannot figure out how I can use IIS and memcached together. [edit]I should add that I need other servers to be able to access memcached[/edit]
