• Choosing an Open Source Application Server for J2EE

  Hello, I know this may be a recurring topic, but I have read a lot of articles and I still have doubts. Also, I would like to hear more recent opinions about this. The main requirements of my application server are: flexible configuration, support for a extremely high number of concurrent users. It will be a system for the mobile communications industry, so it must have high availability as well. I am going to develop a J2EE application and Open Source Applications Servers are my only option. I have use GlassFish for a very small project and I really liked it. Thank you very much for your advise.

• How do you get the email using facebook api?

  I'm using this code but I can't figure out how to get the email from the user. I know you must get special permission from the user but I don't know how. I can get the public data from the user but that's not what I even need. The only thing I need is the email. I guess it's something with this line: $me = $facebook->api('/me'); I have read the documentation but I still don't know how I can get the email. How do I get the email from the user loggin in on my website with the facebook api?

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

• Dell Dimension 2400 problem

  I have a new problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Until yesterday or the day before, it was working fine, but today when I press the power button the light on the power button turns yellow instead of green, the fan behind the processor increases speed until it sounds like a jet engine, and the computer does not boot up. I cleaned out the dust in the computer so that is not the problem. Also, the fan was blowing cold air. Do any of you know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

  There are applications which have script icon in menu like iTunes, NetNewsWire, TaskPaper and it is easy to create script for those apps and assign shortcut (using Keyboard pref pane), but most don't have such icon, submenu and possibility to assign shortcut. Can this be triggered somehow (for example Info.plist) or it is programmed inside app?

• Sun T1000 Fan Noise - Big Issue

  Long and short, the T1000 makes more noise than 7 HP Servers combined. Firmware updated to latest version. PICL running under Solaris OK. Diagnostics all OK. It is driving us mad. We have a server room in our small office and we can hear this baby through thick concrete.... I cannot believe Sun doesn't mention how loud they are.... thought this was an environmentally friendly server.. Help really appreciated before it drives us all mad.

• Why does my laptop shut down, does it get too hot?

  When I play games, or use powerful-applications such as Autodesk Maya, my laptop just shuts down, ofcourse without any warning at all. This is what I've tried so far: Cleaned my fan, completely! Checked if I have enough RAM and good enough graphics card, and I do. (6 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT540M with 2 GB VRAM) None of these options worked. Even tried to clean my fan twice! Now, I have some options I could also try, but I don't know if that have anything to do with it or not. I was thinking reinstalling my Windows 7, because maybe it has to do something wrong with the installation? My laptop is about a year old, and this problem just happend out of no where, short after I downgraded from Windows 8 Release Preview to my original Windows 7.

• How to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life in ubuntu 11.10/12.04?

  I have a brand new Sony Vaio S series laptop.(VPCSA2DGX) It came factory installed with Windows 7 professional Edition 64bit. Runs Intel core i5, 500 GB HDD , 4GB Ram. First I installed ubuntu 11.10 64 bit along side Windows to dual boot. Later,since the problem did not solve, I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit along side Windows to dual boot. However the problem keeps annoying me. Problem: When running ubuntu 11.10/12.04, the battery lasts only about 1.5 hours. The Fan runs loud and continuously. And there is a lot of heat generated. System monitor shows less than 5% CPU used. My laptop enjoys hybrid graphic and I tried turning off ADM graphic card and keep Intel graphic card on. However I can not get the Fan noise or heat to go away and consequently the battery drain continues. BTW, in windows, the laptop gives 4-5 hours of battery power, Fan is silent and there is no heat problem. Any ideas on how to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life in ubuntu 11.10/12.04?

  When you use facebook connect on the iPhone do you have to use the supplied login button and login screen built into the framework? The reason I ask is because I'm also using twitter and I would like to have the same user experience when they log in to user as they have when they log in to facebook. So I can either replicate the login screen facebook connect uses for twitter or just not use the facebook connect login screen all together.

  Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank.   I have a facebook app that I authenticate using a general-purpose authentification. Because it's a facebook app I can't run the authentification in the iFrame. Facebook denies this using X-Frame-Options. The solution, if you authenticate with a link is to use target="_top". • Approach to retrieve files from server

  I'm in the process of making a Java application with a corresponding update application. At any given time the user may want to update the application and the updater will ask for a list of files of the latest release. Based on this list, the updater can determine which files need to be downloaded to complete the update. I now have 2 approaches to solve this, but i would like to know what approach will put the least stress on my application and server. I could send a list of files i want to download to my server and the server zips the files and simply returns this compressed file to the application. The updater sents a request for each seperate file to the server, which simply returns the file The application will be used mainly in Belgium and The Netherlands and connections/bandwidth tend to be pretty decent in here. The average size of a single file should be around 100Kb and at most 1Mb. I expect an update to have anywhere between 10 to 50 new files. I expect at most 100 persons/day to update the application, i.e. in the week when a new version is released. I hope this is enough information to sketch my problem and any advice is welcome. If there is another common way to tackle this, i'd be glad to hear it.

Using PersistentStore to save/load application settings The persistent store provides a means for objects to persist across device resets. A persistent object consists of a key-value pair. When a persistent object is committed to the persistent store, that object's value is stored in flash memory via a deep copy. The value can then be retrieved at a later point in time via the key.
