• Use Adwaita Dark for Libre Office and possibly other apps too?

  I would like to know how to force some apps to use the Adwaita dark theme. I noticed by default that the movie player and photo viewer apps in gnome shell use Adwaita Dark while most other apps use the Light variant. I would really like to set Libre Office to use Dark instead of Light. How would I go about doing this? • What is the general definition of something that can be included or excluded?

  When an application presents a user with a list of items, it's pretty common that it permits the user to filter the items. Often a 'filter' feature is implemented as a set of include or exclude rules. For example: include all emails from [email protected], and exclude those emails without attachments I've seen this include/exclude pattern often; for example Maven and Google Analytics filter things this way. But now that I'm implementing something like this myself, I don't know what to call something that could be either included or excluded. In specific terms: If I have a database table of filter rules, each of which either includes or excludes matching items, what is an appropriate name of the field that stores include or exclude? When displaying a list of filters to a user, what is a good way to label the include or exclude value? (as a bonus, can anyone recommend a good implementation of this kind of filtering for inspiration?)

I will learn more about python through Udacity and books online. After I learn python, what will I need to learn next to build a site? I want to build an interactive photo site. I will have to learn HTML. Do any of you know a good book or web site to learn HTML? I need to learn how to have python in HTML. • Using Google Analytics to determine how much time a visitor spends in each section of my site

  I have a site with various pages, like: /about/history /about/team /contact/email-us /contact I want to figure out how much time people are spending on the entire /about section, and how much on the /contact section. If I run a query on the Google Analytics API and set the dimension to ga:pagePathLevel1 and the metric to ga:avgTimeOnPage, I get results like this: { pagePathLevel1: /about, avgTimeOnPage: 28 }, { pagePathLevel1: /contact, avgTimeOnPage: 10 } This looks roughly like what I want, but I'm not sure how to intepret it: Is the value of avgTimeOnPage the average time spent by any user on all pages that match that path? Or is it the average time spent by any user on any single page that matches that path? I'm looking for the average time spent across all pages matching that path, but the time estimates look shorter than I'd expect.

• Boot time seems unusually long on MSI GX660R (bootchart included)

  After upgrading (clean install) to Ubuntu 12.04, the speed issue when running programs has reduced on my MSI GX660R laptop. However, the boot time is still much longer (over a minute, even after BIOS) than on the many less powerful laptops I have encountered running the same OS, and I was wondering if anyone could help me improve it. I use the FGLRX driver, if that makes any difference. I have uploaded a boot chart, it can be found here http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/bootchartl.png/ As you can see, the boot time is over a minute even after BIOS. A 'designed for Vista' laptop from ages ago which I installed Ubuntu on boots in around thirty seconds, so I think it's a bit strange. • Problems with the colors on my screen. How can I check if it's a hardware problem?

  On my EEE PC netbook some colors are not displayed properly. Specifically, dark gradients such as in the window title do not look very smooth, but rather look like a sequence of a couple of different colors. This is especially visible when opening a menu, for example the "File" menu in Firefox. As you know this one is black, and it looks terrible on my screen. It is not just black, but the colors look really graded and far from a smooth gradient or anything. Now I am wondering: Is this a hardware or software issue? And how can I check this? If it should be a fixable problem I think it would be worth another question. Note that I am using Natty. If my problem description is not good enough I can try to take a photo.

• Quick path jumping

  I was just at a lecture, where I noticed the lecturer using a command (probably aliased) to jump to a specific folder. Example: ~/code$ j sciproj ~/projects/sciproj2011/$ This looked quite slick, so I started wondering: Is this a standard utility, and if so, what is the name? I have two theories as to how it works: It can both create, delete and jump to aliases directly from the command-line in the style of the example, without having to set up aliases in a configuration file or script or whatnot manually. It searches the home directory for a folder matching the name and jumps to it. The second option seems a bit slow, however, so the first would be preferred.

  Hello all, I am just wondering how do you implement libmarkdown-php in a php script? By this, I mean: What code do I run to use the markdown library? Does it simply just add one function? Does it allows me to encode markdown2html and vise versa? Where is a doc for this package, I can't find one? :( Okay, so it terns out that I found the docs, just did not match them up, the project-page did not contain any info on it being the Squeeze package libmarkdown-php, Said to know it is not in Lenny. • "// ..." comments at end of code block after } - good or bad?

  I've often seen such comments be used: function foo() { ... } // foo while (...) { ... } // while if (...) { ... } // if and sometimes even as far as if (condition) { ... } // if (condition) I've never understood this practice and thus never applied it. If your code is so long that you need to know what this ending } is then perhaps you should consider splitting it up into separate functions. Also, most developers tools are able to jump to the matching bracket. And finally the last is, for me, a clear violation to the DRY principle; if you change the condition you would have to remember to change the comment as well (or else it could get messy for the maintainer, or even for you). So why do people use this? Should we use it, or is it bad practice?

  I have a code snippet for an app that users are loading as a 3rd party script on their site. The general sequence is as follows: Site loads "http://www.example.com/foo.js" foo.js does stuff 1 to 2 seconds later, foo.js loads bar.js Now in a perfect world, I'd want to see matching counts for the calls to foo.js and bar.js. However, bar.js loads only about 94% of the time. I'm wondering how much of this discrepancy might be attributable to site abandonment given the fact that bar.js is delayed by 1 or 2 seconds. I posted here instead of StackOverflow since I think it's more a question about what would be typical time on page when users abandon the page.

• projective geometry: how do I turn a projection of a rectangle in 3D into a 2D view

  So the problem is that I have a 3D projection of a rectangle that I want to turn into 2D. That is I have a photo of a sheet of paper laying on a table which I want to transform into a 2D view of that sheet. So what I need is to get an undistorted 2D image by reverting all the 3D/projection transformations and getting a plain view of the sheet from the top. I happened to find some directions on the subject but they don't suggest an immediate instruction on how this can be achieved. It would be really helpful to get a step-by-step instruction of what needs to be done. Or, alternatively, a link on a resource that breaks it down to little details. Thank you

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashes on startup for newer versions of Linux, possibly related to WiFi

  My computer gets to the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, and then the screen goes black, spits out a lot of error messages, and cannot boot. (If it'd be helpful, I can take a photo of my screen in this state.) I've found I can successfully boot if my wireless card is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, my computer crashes with the same black screen of death. I can also successfully boot if I choose "Previous Linux Version" and select a few versions back (I think 3.0.6). Here are some relevant details about my setup: Ubuntu 12.04 Computer: Lenovo x230 Wireless: Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 RAM: 16 GB of RAM Thank you!!!

In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. • How to tell what part of a 3D cube was touched

  I am writing a rather simple android game and I am implementing Open GL to draw a 3D cube that spins upon the X, Y and Z axis and I need to know where the user has clicked on the texture of the cube. The texture is a simple square bitmap (100x100) that has a smaller square in the center. I need to know if the user touches the inner square. As well was tell which face of the cube the user touches. Does anyone know how this can be accomplished if not can anyone give some pseudo code on how to tell where the ray correlates to the texture? Or at least point me in the right direction. • What is the proper way to create a cross-fade effect? [closed]

Two techniques I've found so far are: Use an overlay and underlay <div> and fade in and out each other's visibility.   I've pages with titles like 'Alpha with Beta'. For every such page, there is an inverse page 'Beta with Alpha'. Both pages link to each other. When someone on Google searches for 'Beta with Alpha', I'd like them to land on the correct page, but sometimes 'Alpha with Beta' ranks higher (or vice versa). I was thinking of inspecting the referral link when a visitor arrives on my site, and silently redirecting them to the correct page based on what they actually searched for. Just wondering if this could be penalized by Google as 'cloaking/sneaky redirects'? Or is there a better way to ensure that the correct page on my site ranks higher for the matching query?

  I'm currently trying to find (and copy) all files and folder structure matching a specific pattern, in a specified directory and I'm so nearly there! Specifically, I want to recursively copy all folders not begining with a '_' character from a specified path. find /source/path/with/directories -maxdepth 1 -type d ! -name _\* -exec cp -R {} /destination/path \; In the /source/path/with/directories/ path are machine-specific directories beginning with '_' and others, and I'm only interested in copying the others. For a reason beyond me, the find command returns the /source/path/with/directories/ directory, and therefore copies its content, directories begining with '_' included. Anyone have a hint as to why that is? Thanks, Pascal

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Is there a simple shopping cart I can add to my existing website?

  I created a website for my wife, who knits scarves. The site simply displays the 18 different colours she has created, with a Lightbox-like large photo available when clicked. She would now like to give visitors the option to purchase online and pay with PayPal and possibly Google Checkout. We do not need a full ecommerce solution; I've looked at several and they all seem to be overkill for our requirements. We don't even need categories. "All" I want is something that will add products to a cart, take the customer details and integrate the payment provider. So far, the best solution I have found seems to be this script on Codecanyon and I wanted to find out if anyone knows of any better products before I commit to this route. Thanks for your help!

• which way should I look at visits by region in Google Analytics?

  I need to generate a report for only the Americas in Google Analytics. When I create an advanced segment that includes Continent Exactly Matching Americas I get one number, If I create the segment that includes sub-Continent region Includes America I get a slightly different number, And if I look at all visits but choose Demographicslocationand segment by sub-continent region I get yet a 3rd number! (Note: this is because it also includes Caribbean) All are only different by around 1% of traffic. What is the most accurate way to do this, or should I just pick a way and be consistent?
