• Internet Connection not working - USB LAN connection - from particular modem

  I am trying to fix Internet connection on a friends Dell inspiron 1720 with XP service pack 3. It has an integrated network card that stopped working, after powering down/up the modem still didnt work I brought it back to my place to try a few things ie check cable, update driver etc... still didnt work. So I bought a USB LAN connector. It didnt work straight away but I went to configure the properties and changed the ConnectionType from AutoSense to 100 BaseT 10BaseT Full_Duplex, I basically just tried them all. From my place when connected to my desktop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. From my place When connected to their laptop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. Happy I went back to my friends house confident it would all work, and it didnt. Brought it back to mine and it did. While there, in Network Connections the connection is there recognized, enabled, 'working properly' it just says not connected. Also there is no led on the USB connector While at mine as above except there is an led on the USB connector and it says connected. Other difference I can think of is they have a cable modem, I'm plugged into the back of a Belkin wireless router - would this make a difference? Any other ideas what to try? (Would getting the model of the cable modem help anyone?) The USB connector is "DM9601 USB to Fast Ethernet"

• Backup plan for linux webserver in small business?

  Hi, I am currently in the process of writing a backup plan for the webserver in use by my business. I am very new to this area and have a few ideas about how things should work but am unsure of what tools to use and what sort of restore process is appropriate. I'm looking for something relatively simplistic and it doesn't have to be 100% paranoid just enough to give me a reliable backup. Speed is not of the essence and there is not going to be a live fallback in place. The backup will be onto a single hdd that will be stored onsite (no option for offsite as yet). Backups will be taking place weekly. I am constrained by both time and money which is why I'm aiming for a good enough solution. Is taking an image of the webserver system drive periodically and using that as the backup appropriate? Should I be testing that the backups restore correctly every time that I perform one? This is a bit broad but what setup would you use if you were in my place, given the services I am running? Should I add additonal machines and split the services? Any advice is much appreciated! • Delete ARP cache on Mac OS when moving from one Wifi network to the other

  I am facing wireless connectivity problems when I move from one Wifi network to the other. Here is how it happens: I am at my friends place. I connect to his Wifi. His Wifi router ip address is 192.168.0.1. Everything is fine I close my laptop, come back to my house, open my laptop and I connect to the Wifi Network at my place. Different ESSID, but the Wifi router address is the same 192.168.0.1. At this point I cant get to anything on the internet. To debug I try to see if I can ping the router (192.168.0.1), I cant. I get a no route to host. Meanwhile airport tells me Im connected to Wifi. I see the arp cache and I see a permanent entry for 192.168.0.1 ? (192.168.0.1) at 5c:d9:98:65:73:6c on en1 permanent [ethernet] This permanent bit looks problematic. I go ahead and delete the arp cache entry and all is fine with the world until I go back to my friends place where the same situation plays out. Now my question is, why the hell is this happening? If there is no way around it, can I run a script on Wifi connect/disconnect to clear out the arp cache? • Is there a free PDF printer / distiller that creates signable documents?

  I've used various methods (mentioned elsewhere on this site) to create PDFs, using a printer driver or converting from PostScript, etc. The common problem is that if I open any of the output files in the newer versions of Adobe Reader, there's an option to "Place Signature" but it's greyed out, or gives an error message that the feature has been disabled for this document. As far as I can tell, there's an option set somewhere in the document metadata that tells Reader "allow the user to sign this document", or don't. None of the free/open source tools that have been been linked to in other SU posts have had this listed as an option (though to be fair I haven't actually downloaded and tried all of them). Is there a tool that does this? Can I just poke a bit with a hex editor somewhere to turn on this functionality? I can sometimes get access to Acrobat Professional to turn on this option, but doing it for every desired case would be more work than I care to do. The current workaround for single-page documents is: Print the document to PDF (possibly via postscript) Open a single-page blank PDF with the "signable" bit turned on in Reader create a custom "stamp" using the Reader markup tools, by importing the printed-to document "stamp" an image of the printed document on the blank page, hoping to get it centered about right place a signature over the document-but-not-really you just stamped This obviously does not scale well at all. It would be much better if I could: Print the document to PDF Drag the document to a simple shortcut / tool / whatever Open the document in Reader Place a signature in the document ETA: Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer -- I'm talking about the certificate-based digital signing available in Adobe Reader, not adding a virtual ink signature. Also, any solution really would have to be available offline.

• Hosting multiple websites from home

  I have just been accepted for Microsofts Wevsite Spark program which I mainly got for the tools, Visual Studio, Blend. I also have a few of my own websites, personal and a couple of business ones. I also work freelance and sometimes I would like a place to just put a demo up of a clients project. The websites I currently have are all on differnet hosting provders and domain registrars. The WebsiteSpark comes with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. It would be really advantagous of me to have all these in one place but also so I have complete control over the database and the environment. So I am thinking over the next 4-6 months of migrating all this to my own server that I will host from home, or maybe even setup at home and then store in a proper datacentre. I was wondering what steps I should take and what to be aware of, specifically: 1) having all these different websites on one computer and having the url got to the proper place. 2) Cost effectiveness? Having the server in home as apposed to datacentre. Most solutions I see charge over £1000 a month to have a machine in datacentre. This is mostly for my own ease of management and shared hosting which I currently have is very limited configuration wise. Would getting a server in house be beneficial for then upgrading to the cloud? What measures should I take with my ISP? I know this is a lot I've asked but just even links to good articles would be good. Thanks

• Multiple if functions

  I have problem I'm hoping someone could help me with. I have five different text values in 5 cells. I am trying to combine these values into one cell with a comma in between each. However the trick is that if there is no value in (H6) then it must place the word "and" between the cell (F6) and (G6). If there is a value in (H6) then place the word "and" between (G6) and (H6). In the same statement I must also include If there is not value in (G6) then it must place the word "and" between the cell E6 and F6. Please see image attached. I am trying to get the highlighted statements into one cell. So multiple IF statements into one cell.   I'm building a Route Planner Webapp using Spring/Hibernate/Tomcat and a mysql database, I have a database containing read only data, such as Bus Stop Coordinates, Bus times which is never updated. I'm trying to make the app run faster, each time the application is run it will preform approx 1000 reads to the database to calculate a route. I have setup a Ehcache which greatly improves the read from database times. I'm now setting terracotta + Ehcache distributed caching to share the cache with multiple Tomcat JVMs. This seems a bit complicated. I've tried memcached but it was not performing as fast as ehcache. I'm wondering if a MongoDb or Redis would be better suited. I have no experience with nosql but I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas. What i need is quick access to the read only database.

• Algorithm shortest path between all points

  Hi, suppose I have 10 points. I know the distance between each point. I need to find the shortest possible route passing trough all points. I have tried a couple of algorithms (Dijkstra, Floyd Warshall,...) and the all give me the shortest path between start and end, but they don't make a route with all points on it.   I'm using jQuery to POST an Id to my route, for example: http://localhost:1234/Load/Delete with a POST Parameter Id = 1 I'm only using the default route in Global.asax.cs right now: routes.MapRoute( "Default", "{controller}/{action}/{id}", new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } ); When I perform the POST, in my ActionFilter filterContext.RouteData.Values["Id"] is set to the default value of "". Ideally, I'd like it to use the POST Parameter value automatically if the URL comes up with "". I know it is posting properly because I can see the value of "1" in filterContext.HttpContext.Request.Params["Id"]. Is there a way to get RouteData to use a POST parameter as a fall back value?

• Dojo Table not Rendering in IE6

  I'm trying to use Dojo (1.3) checkBoxes to make columns appear/hide in a Dojo Grid that's displayed below the checkBoxes. I got that functionality to work fine, but I wanted to organize my checkBoxes a little better. So I tried putting them in a table. My dojo.addOnLoad function looks like this: dojo.addOnLoad(function(){ var checkBoxes = []; var container = dojo.byId('checkBoxContainer'); var table = dojo.doc.createElement("table"); var row1= dojo.doc.createElement("tr"); var row2= dojo.doc.createElement("tr"); var row3= dojo.doc.createElement("tr"); dojo.forEach(grid.layout.cells, function(cell, index){ //Add a new "td" element to one of the three rows }); dojo.place(addRow, table); dojo.place(removeRow, table); dojo.place(findReplaceRow, table); dojo.place(table, container); }); What's frustrating is: 1) Using the Dojo debugger I can see that the HTML is being properly generated for the table. 2) I can take that HTML and put just the table in an empty HTML file and it renders the checkBoxes in the table just fine. 3) The page renders correctly in Firefox, just not IE6. I have read similar posts on this site regarding CMS with MVC and I'm surveying the landscape (N2, Kooboo, MvcCms, etc). What I am really interested in knowing is whether there are any platforms out there (WAMP or LAMP) that provide this functionality out of the box. I may be willing to go the LAMP route if it requires little development work. If I have to crack open any code then it probably needs to be .net unless there are compelling reasons to go another route.

What I can't determine is how to define multiple privileges for a single page. Use case: A page that is for managing users. I want to display that page (in navigation) if the current signed in user's role has add, edit, or delete privileges on the Users resource.   I Have a canvas and would like to place silverlight elements within that canvas relative to each. For example, I have an element (A) at canvas.top="0" canvas.left="5". I would like to place all elements proceeding that one relative to its position. So if i move A to canvas.top="10" canvas.left="15" all other elements would reposition themselves.   Hi folks, i have an urgent problem. Essentially, my routing works on my localhost. But when i deployed this to production, the routes does not seem to work correctly.   I am trying to add the path /_vti_bin/Lists.asmx to my ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I am registering the route as follows: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}"); routes.Add(new Route("_vti_bin/Lists.asmx", new ListsHandler())); where ListHandler is defined as: public sealed class ListsHandler : IRouteHandler { #region IRouteHandler Members public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion } But when I start the MVC application and try to navigate to http://localhost:8888/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx, I get an HTTP 404 error, rather than an exception raised. Is this even possible in MVC? Do I need to add an Lists.asmx ASPX web service file to my project in a particular place (I cannot create the _vti_bin folder in the Visual Studio project)?
