    I'm new with Linux and have noticed that there are numbers beside certain commands I look up. For example I want to look up accept() in the aspect of network programming, but man accept shows this instead: accept(8) Easy Software Products accept(8) NAME accept/reject - accept/reject jobs sent to a destination So how do you switch between manual pages to other numbers like accept(1) ~ accept(7)?

  • Running programs by typing some alias in Windows

    Is there an easy way in windows to set a given string, like "sidb" to run a program or open a given folder in Windows? My original idea was to be able to run commands like that in the "Execute" start button menu (or Win + R),so I'd just have to do WIN+R and type "sidb". What is the best way to accomplish this? EDIT: May I rephrase this as : Is there a way to define for example, in systems variables, sibd="C:.......blabla\ and then I'd just have to type "sibd" in Run?

  • vmware problems - networking - no packet response

    XP is my host. Ubuntu is my Guest in VMware. When I do the following commands, I should get SMTP respones but now get no response. I use wireshark to analayze it.     If I have the below sudoers entry usera ALL=(userb) NOPASSWD: /home/userc/bin/executable-file usera ALL=(userb) NOPASSWD: /home/userc/bin/link-to-another-executable-file When I log-on as usera and try running the below commands, it works sudo -u userb /home/userc/bin/executable-file but NOT the one below. sudo -u userb /home/userc/bin/link-to-another-executable-file Sorry, user usera is not allowed to execute '/home/userc/bin/link-to-another-executable-file' as userb on hostname. Any ideas?

  • No mod_jk.so generated when compiling tomcat connector

    When I try to compile the tomcat connector from source, everything appears fine except that no mod_jk.so file gets created. Software versions: RHEL6 x86_64 httpd-2.4.3 tomcat-connector 1.2.37 Commands: cd native ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs make cd apache-2.0 ls The only warning message during the make is: Warning! dlname not found in /usr/local/tomcat-connectors-1.2.37-src/native/apache-2.0/mod_jk.la. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the mod_jk.so file to be generated?

    How do I change the colors in a Cygwin mintty session which is already open? Is it possible? Use case: Under environment-imposed time constraints, multiple terminal windows have been opened without forethought. In order to reduce the risk of typing the commands for system A into the terminal for system B, it would be nice if they were different colors. Is there some escape sequence or whatnot that can change the color scheme for a running session?

    I need to create a daemon from the application in Debian. Is there any standard tool for this in Debian like "upstart" in Ubuntu? I need only start-stop commands, to start a program as a daemon with some options and a pid file and kill it with pid file. I looked at init.d but it seems these are for boot-time launch. I want to start my daemon manually.

  • Corrupt tar (Resulting folder smaller than packed file)

    Hi everybody, I have an issue with a tarball created on a SuSe 10.3 Server version. The .tar file has a size of 6.5 GB but if I untar it under Ubuntu 9.10 the resulting folder only has a size of 1.5 GB. commands used: tar cvf for packing, tar xvf for unpacking. Perhaps somebody knows how this can be fixed, would be great, cheers

    As I understand it if I run the command gpasswd -A username directoryname I assign administrator privileges to username for the directory directoryname. This means that username is able to add new members to the group for directoryname without root privileges. Does this also mean that username belongs to the group or do I need to add username to the group using the commands usermod, gpasswd -a or gpasswd -M

  • Getting permission denied error

    On my Media Temple DV 4.0 server I am getting permission denied errors: -bash: cd: httpdocs: Permission denied If I switch from my login user to sudo (sudo su) or switch to root using su-, I can access the directory with any issue. This is just my site's files directory though so not sure why I'm being denied. Additionally, I added my user to the visudo commands file with: user ALL=(ALL) ALL Any suggestions to what else could be the issue?

    I can't seem to get psexec commands to work on Windows 7 Enterprise. I'm trying to execute a command like this: psexec.exe \\172.16.165.157 -u jc -p testing123 -c -f -i cmd.exe But, I keep getting the error: PsExec v1.94 - Execute processes remotely Copyright (C) 2001-2008 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com Error copying C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe to remote system: Access is denied. I'm trying to execute the command from a machine running Windows XP Professional. Has anybody seen an issue like this?

But in there I didn't find an entry for basic commands like ls or ln and a layman's explanation of all the flags and options. Could anybody recommend me something?

    I have created a NTFS Partition(/dev/sda3) and copy the grub files in it in the following path: /dev/sda3/boot/grub/ then tried to install the grub by using following commands: grub root (hd0,2) Filesystem unknown, partition type 0x7 grub setup (hd0) Error : cannot mount selected partition The partition is present and i created it with gparted. i also tried the following command: find (hd0,2)/boot/grub/stage1 Error 15: File not found All the files were there as copied them. So, where is the problem and what i am doing wrong?

  • On linux how can make a list of files that are owned by a particular owner and then fix the group and owner?

    I have a deep and complex file system where some files have been accidently written by root. I want to change the ownership of those files back to the original owner in one go. I am playing with commands like: find /folder -type f | xargs ls -l | grep "root root" but there is a lot of garbage coming out too. I want to make a list first and then change only the files in that list after confirmation.

Would like to: Run /usr/local/bin/spamassassin against it, tagging each message if the score is 10 or greater Have a tcsh shell or perl one-liner grep all mails with a spam score of over 10 and move those mails to /tmp/spam What commands can I run to accomplish this?     Does anybody have some expirence with udisks, because HAL won't be longer supported on the most linux distribution, so I am thinking of to use udisks for UDI in $(hal-find-by-property --key storage.bus --string usb) do HAL_TMP=`hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.removable.media_available` if [ "$HAL_TMP" = "true" ]; then HAL_DEV=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key block.device) HAL_SIZE=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.removable.media_size) HAL_TYPE=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.drive_type) How do I have to adapt the above mentioned commands but use udisks instead of hal Thanks!
