  • NTFS disk mounted as fuseblk in ubuntu 12.10 is very slow and a lot of errors when rsync. Is that not a rare thing?

    I am having problems with a NTFS disk mounted as a fuseblk in my ubuntu 12.10 through external usb3. When I did a 1.1TB backup with rsync the speed was 1-2MB/s (wiht a ext4 disk speed was 70 MB/s before and after trying the NTFS disk). Also after one hour errors started to appear: rsync: write failed on "xxx": No such file or directory recv_files: "yyy" is a directory #but this file is a FILE not a dir ??!! .... As this is the first time I have mounted the NTFS in linux for heavy usage (the data would be used in windows afterwards), I would like to know if this kind of thinks are common o was only that something became unstable in my system and a simply restart would probably have solved it. This leads me to the these questions: Can I trust fuse for manage NTFS disks? Or is a problem of the NTFS tools in linux not yet totally stables for writing? Do people is still suffering from low performance with fuse-NTFS vs ext4 (in the past I have read about people complaining about this)?

  • serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

    After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server.     What are the performance affects of compressing Program Files on Windows NTFS? On a fast, multicore machine, the overhead of decompression is minimal. Machines are generally disk bound, and if you can reduce the disk load by compression, you often speed things up. (Microsoft says that the built in compression of Windows Search indexes actually improves speed for this reason.) On the other hand, Windows' virtual memory is complicated. Perhaps if files are compressed, they can't be paged out simply. And there may be other issues. In short: On a fast, multicore machine with a relatively slow disk, what performance affects will compressing Program Files have?

  • Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

    I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

  • Link aggregation with freebsd8 and a cicso 3550, what am i doing wrong?

    Hey, I am trying to setup Link Aggrigation with LACP (well, anything that provides increased bandwidth and failover using my setup will work). I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 on 3 machines. M1 is running 2 10/100 ethernetcards setup for link aggrigation using lagg. for reference: ifconfig em0 up ifconfig tx0 up ifconfig create lagg0 ifconfig lagg0 laggproto lacp laggport tx0 laggport em0 192.168.1.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 I plugged them into ports 1 and 2 of a Cicso 3550. then ran: configure terminal interface range Fa0/1 - 2 switchport mode access switchport access vlan 1 channel-group 1 mode active (everythings in vlan 1) Now Im able to connect the other computers to other ports on the switch and failover works great, i can unplug cables in the middle of a transfer and the traffic gets rerouted. However, im not noticing any speed increase. My test setup: load balancing: i tried dst and src on the switch, neither seemed to give me a speed increase. I am SCPing 2 500 meg files from the lagg computer to other computers (one each) which are also running 10/100 full duplex cards. I get transfer speeds of about 11.2-11.4 Mbps to a single host, and about half that (5.9-6.2) Mbps when transferring to both at the same time. From what I understood with destination load balancing the router was suppose to balance traffic headed for 1 computer over 1 port and traffic headed for another over a diff(in this case) the other port. With destination-MAC address forwarding, when packets are forwarded to an EtherChannel, the packets are distributed across the ports in the channel based on the destination host MAC address of the incoming packet. Therefore, packets to the same destination are forwarded over the same port, and packets to a different destination are sent on a different port in the channel. For the 3550 series switch, when source-MAC address forwarding is used, load distribution based on the source and destination IP address is also enabled for routed IP traffic. All routed IP traffic chooses a port based on the source and destination IP address. Packets between two IP hosts always use the same port in the channel, and traffic between any other pair of hosts can use a different port in the channel.   • What does the "Maximum Frequency" number mean in the Windows Resource Monitor?

    In the Windows Resource Monitor's CPU tab, there is a status box and graph for the "Maximum Frequency", right next to the "CPU Usage" values. What does this mean? The value is sometimes over 100% on my system... what could that imply? By looking at CPU-z's real-time report of the processor's clock speed, it seems to be loosely related to what frequency the CPU is running at, which would imply that it means "percent of maximum possible frequency the CPU is running at"; this would be of relevance on systems with SpeedStep and/or TurboBoost technology (or similar). Furthermore, setting the system to "power saving mode" lowers the "maximum frequency" value to around 60%, while setting it to "high performance" mode sets it to around 110%. However, the percentage does not seem to exactly correlate to the CPU speed being shown. What value is this actually representing then?

Features it needs to have: should NOT display the keyboard layout on the screen! should give detailed statistics which actually measure progress (for which key do I have the highest error rate, graphs showing how typing speed improved over time, etc) should enable me to actually learn touch-typing in about one long weekend were I don't do much else than learning to touch-type. it would be very good if it were possible to load a text-file and the program will use words from the text-file for the exercises as well My goals are: at least same typing speed as I have now but which touch-typing, want to be able to look at the screen only when typing P.S.: EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'm using Win 7.   • Is LiveDrive.com reliable?

    I'm currently using DropBox (50GB account) which works fine, but at this moment I'm not impressed with its speed. I have a 60down/6up connection and only LiveDrive can use almost the full bandwidth of my connection. Dropbox often is very slow (avg. 100-500Kb/s compared to LD at 6MB/s). If I only look at the speed and storage costs then LD is much better, but I don't have enough experience with LD to be able to say something about reliability. Can anyone comment on this? Thx.

    While poking around trying to figure out why a Linux - Linux file transfer is running slower than I think it should, I stumbled across something I'm not familiar with. /dev/dm-0 seems to be my bottleneck, but I have no idea what it is. On my destination server, the iostat command shows a device at the bottom, /dev/dm-0, as being 100% utilized. This server has 6 disks in a mdadm raid5 set, with LVM running on top of it. Each of the underlying disks are sitting around 50% util. The transfer is writing to a logical volume located on this raidset. What is this /dev/dm-0 thing? Once I know what it is, maybe I can find how to increase its speed, or at least understand why its the speed that it is.

    Hello, There are some rail road companies offering an internet connection to their customers. How can they do it? What kind of internet connection can they have on board a moving vehicle? Satellite connection? I think the train movement will displace a mounted dish and it also will have to be constantly moved around to find the satellite as the train makes turns. Speed isn't greater either. GSM connection - EDGE, UMTS, CSD? 3G coverage often is not an option in rural areas where train goes. These kinds of technologies doesn't offer good speed. WiMax? Wikipedia article on it says it could provide 40Mbps for long distances. Is that what they use mostly? Some kind of power line internet carrier?

  • Windows Swap (Page File): Enable or Disable?

    From my personal experience I've noticed that disabling the page file in Windows XP has given me, in general, the most speed gain out of any other software change I can make. Obviously this has to be done when a significant amount of RAM is available. Typically I find that it works nicely with +2GB of RAM. The only issues I've ever really had were loading up Adobe Photoshop. Is this really a speed improvement or am I imagining it? Note: In order to actually turn it off, you must not just set it to 0MB, but disable it. Otherwise Windows will just expand it when it needs to in order to meet its needs.

    I have two unused USB 2 drives. I wanted to stripe them in a RAID0 configuration for fast disk access for virtual machines. (I find running a VMware virtual machine off a USB2 drive to be painfully slow. Especially Windows Vista) If I have both USB drives attached to the same USB2 hub, will that negate any benefit I gain by creating a RAID0 array? That is to say, is the speed of USB2 the limiting factor or is the speed of the drives? Would I get better performance by attaching one or both drives directly to my computer?

    I have a minimal install of Ubuntu 10.4 Server for testing and learning purposes. There is a very annoying occurrance: whenever I try to "man dpkg" or any command that load a few screens length of text (eg. "ls -al") the redraw speed of the console is just way too slow. I can see how each new line causes the whole screen to redraw. Note: that this doesn't happen inside X. No gui is installed. I have been experimenting with adding vesafb to the grub line as some guides suggested, but no speedups happened. You might be able to reproduce this behaviour on your linux system by switching to terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1. Is there any way to speed scrolling up?

  • Torrent, ISA Server 2006 and packet dropped due to TCP_NOT_SYNC

    Hi, I'm trying to get uTorrent 2.0.4 to work in a DMZ machine, protected by a ISA Server 2006. I've opened 1 inbound port (via publishing) and opened all the higher ports for that specific machine that runs uTorrent on my DMZ, and it's working almost fine. The problem is that I keep getting packets dropped with 0xc0040017 FWX_E_TCP_NOT_SYN_PACKET_DROPPED. Is there any way to disable this via registry? Is there any way around this? The download speed fluctuates a lot, and when I starts hitting the upper limit that I've defined in uTorrent, the errors start poping up a lot, and the download speed goes way down, and the process repeats on and on Tks Edit My outbound rules are: Port Range: TCP 10000-65535 Outbound Port Range: UDP 10000-65535 Send Edit It's probably a bug handling requests from Windows 7. When I installed the uTorrent on a XP machine, the problem went away

  • Autocorrect for "fat fingers" - MS Word

    I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in for MS Word which can handle key-presses of surrounding keys when typing at speed (rather like iPhone or Android autocorrect)? My use case is in transcribing interviews where I need to type quickly (even with the playback at half speed) - but I don't do this often enough to become a proficient touch typist. I will also be paying close attention to the text produced in subsequent analysis so I have a reasonable expectation that I'll catch any "hilarious" autocorrect errors. Any pointers to plug-ins which work at either a system level or within MS Word would be great. Even in an open source word processor at a pinch, though I'd miss the MS Word environment and my macros.   • Why does restarting the modem fix latency?

    In the last few days I've noticed poor internet performance. Today I ran a speed test and the results were abysmal... 10mb down and 0.18mb up (which really hurt, because I was trying to RDC from another location). I pay for 30mb down and 5mb up. Latency was at 128ms. Before calling my ISP to give them a verbal lashing, I unplugged the modem and plugged it back in. I pretty much got top speed after doing that (with a latency of 7ms). I'm the type of guy that likes to know what goes on under the hood. So what's the deal? What mysterious powers does restarting give to my modem?

    In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface. But if the latter requires a lot of CPU support and the former doesn't...

    I finally set up Outlook to use GMail and IMAP, but unfortunately, it's extremely slow. The reason, I think for this is because I have 14300 emails in my inbox. The default jigdo-lite uses wget to download files. It seems jigdo (wget) downloads only one file at a time with one connection. So I'm getting a low download speed. How can I accelerate the download speed using jigdo? Possible Solutions: Using different download manager with jigdo. Is it possible? If yes, How? Using jigdo (wget) to download multiple files at once. How? Getting download links of remaining files to download so that they can be downloaded with a download manager and later added to jigdo iso. How?

  • Fusion 3.1 and Parallels 6 for Win7 x64

    I read in a recent article that Parallels Desktop 6 is faster almost everywhere than VMware Fusion. I was originally using Parallels 4 before passing to VMware due to the frequent Parallels crashes. As now I am using a lot Fusion on my Macbook on a big Win7 x64 virtualized development machine that I find too slow I am wondering if the announced speed up of Parallels V6 is justified to come back to it. As a test I converted my Fusion 3.1 to a trial of Parallels Desktop 6 and my Windows Experience Index passed from 4.7 of Fusion to 4.5 on Parallels 6 so apparently the virtualized machine is not seeing that speed benefit. Is there any optimization to set up on Parallels to increase the WEI or should I stay with Fusion (and in this case this kind of articles is just marketing stuff)?
