• Microsoft sublanguage string to locale identifier

  I can't seem to find a way to convert, or find, a local identifier from a sublanguage string. This site shows the mappings: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd318693(v=VS.85).aspx I want the user to enter a sublanguage string, such as "France (FR)" and to get the local identifier from this, which in this case would be 0x0484. Or the other way around, if a user enters 0x0480 then to return French (FR). Has anyone encountered this problem before and can point me in the right direction? Otherwise I'm going to be writing a few mapping statements to hard code it and maintain future releases if anything changes. BTW, I'm coding in C++ for Windows platform. Cheers

• Fetch pages translated by Google? (PHP)

  Hi, I have a bunch of big txt files (game walkthroughs) that I need translating from English to French. My first instinct was to host them on a server and use a PHP script to automate the translation process by doing a file_get_contents() and some URL manipulation to get the translated text. Something like: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=fr&sl=en&u=http://mysite.com/faq.txt I found it poses two problems: 1) there are frames 2) the frame src values are relative (ie src="/translate_c?....") so nothing loads. Is there any way to fetch pages translated via Google in PHP (without using their AJAX API as it's really not suitable here)?

• Font choices in International scenarios: multilingual vs unicode

  I have a website that will eventually display multiple languages. I notice the common fonts used in web CSS (ex: Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, Tahoma) and even the newer Vista/Office 2007/VS2008 fonts (Calibri,Cambria, Candara, Corbel, etc) are significantly larger (~350K) than your average (US only?) TTF font (~50k) so these fonts contain most/all the major character sets that common languages (Spanish, French, German, etc) use. My question is, would somebody confirm that these fonts listed above are acceptable for international use of the major (let's say top 8) spoken languages? If so, then I'm guessing the only purpose of unicode fonts; such "Arial Unicode" (a massive 22mb) is only for dealing with extremely niche dialog, eastern glyphs (Chinese, Japanese) and dead languages? I'm just looking for some confirmation from developers that have their desktop apps/web apps rendering multiple languages and have a visual confirmation, I'm already in the 99% sure bin but you know what they say about assumption.

• sort array with special characters in php

  I have an array I'm trying to asort using php. The problem is that the array has accented characters in it and needs to be sorted using "french" rules. cote < côte < coté < côté I've tried many things, like using php collators, but I get the following error : PHP Fatal error: Class 'Collator' not found I've also tried to set locale but it didn't do anything so I'm not sure I was doing it right, or if I need to isntall the locale. I'm a little confused. I'm using PHP 5.2.4 if that helps. If I use asort without anything, it puts all the words with accented characters at the end. Thanks.

• VS2012 Coded UI Test closes browser by default

  *** Thanks to Steve St. Jean for asking this question and Shubhra Maji for answering this question on the ALM champs list *** 01 – Introduction The default behaviour of coded UI tests running in an Internet Explorer browser has changed between MTM 2010 and MTM 2012. When running a Coded UI test recorded in MTM 2012 or VS 2012 at the end of the test execution the instance of the browser is closed by default. 02 – Description Let’s take an example. As you can see the CloseDinnerNowWeb() method is commented out.  In VS 2010, upon running this test the browser would be left open after the test execution completes. In VS 2012 RTM the behaviour has changed. At the end of the test run, the IE window is closed even though there is no command from the test to do so. In the example below when the test runs, it opens 2 IE windows to the website. When the test run completes both the windows are closed, even though there is no command in the test to close the window. 03 – How to change the CUIT behaviour not to close the IE window after test execution? This change to this functionality in VS 2012 is by design. It is however possible to rollback the behaviour to how it originally was in VS 2010 i.e. the IE window will not close after the test execution unless otherwise commanded by the test to do so.   Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

• M-Audio Delta starts up at wrong sample rate

  When the PC starts my M-Audio Delta 66 is using 48000kHz sampling rate when it is set for 44100 in Envy24. This causes audio to play slower than it should. This is in Kubuntu 14.04 on my new PC using an AMD A8 6500 with 8GB. When I first installed it seemed okay, but at some point it went wrong and has been doing this consistently since then. Kernel is 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux steve@slarti:~$ cat /proc/asound/card2/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S32_LE subformat: STD channels: 10 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 441 buffer_size: 3528 I can get it to switch to 44100 if I disable/enable the Delta in Pulseaudio volume control, but I have to do this every day and the sound still seems distorted. I can't see any issues in any of the config or log files I can find. If I boot the PC with a Mint Live USB it starts at 44100 and sound fine. Originally reported on Youtube is playing at the wrong speed - maybe soundcard related, but I'll close that and have this more relevant question instead.

• Django: switch language of message sent from admin panel

  I have a model, Order, that has an action in the admin panel that lets an admin send information about the order to certain persons listed that order. Each person has language set and that is the language the message is supposed to be sent in. A short version of what I'm using: from django.utils.translation import ugettext as _ from django.core.mail import EmailMessage lang = method_that_gets_customer_language() body = _("Dear mister X, here is the information you requested\n") body += some_order_information subject = _("Order information") email = EmailMessage(subject, body, '[email protected]', ['[email protected]']) email.send() The customer information about the language he uses is available in lang. The default language is en-us, the translations are in french (fr) and german (de). Is there a way to use the translation for the language specified in lang for body and subject then switch back to en-us? For example: lang is 'de'. The subject and body should get the strings specified in the 'de' translation files.

• Nginx Joomla Internationalization URL rewriting

  I'm using Joomla in combination with Nginx, and I'm currently trying to achieve some URL rewriting for a website that has several langages supported (italian, french, chinese, and deutch) The urls have the country code after the domain name, like so : http://www.example.com/fr/test/test.html or http://www.example.com/de/test/test.html I'm looking to rewrite the urls so the country code is part of the subdomain : so http://www.example.com/fr/test/test.html becomes http://fr.example.com/test/test.html Is there a way to achieve this with Nginx or should I look into a third party extension for Joomla (not my favorite choice). • Pros and cons of Localisation of technical words ?

  This question is directed to the non-english speaking people here. It is somewhat biased because SO is an "english-speaking" web forum, so... In the other hand, most developers would know english anyway... In your locale culture, are technical words translated into locale words ? For example, how "Design Pattern", or "Factory", or whatever are written/said in german, spanish, etc. etc. when used by IT? Are the english words prefered? The local translation? Do the two version (english/locale) are evenly used? Edit Could you write with your answer the locale translation of "Design Pattern"? In french, according to Wikipedia.fr, it is "Patron de conception", which translates back as "Model of Conceptualization" (I guess).

• Accented character replacement for search then reinserted afterwards

  Basically my issue is that users would like to search for a french word that has accented characters but without typing in the accented characters and then have the actual accented word appeared highlighted if found... So for example they would type in "declare" but in the result sets it would look like "déclare" and if found "déclare" would be highlighted. My first thought was to just simply replace the characters with a regex but then I remembered that I would need to re-insert the replaced characters after the search... I was thinking of then using some sort of character map that would track position and the character so that when the search was finshed I could put the result set back to the way it was. This seems a little brute force to me and I was wondering if anyone had a better alternative? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 with this app. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

I need to set up Drupal 6 as a multilanguage site. 1 installation, several language versions = several domains, i.e. English at englishsite.com French at frenchsite.com German at germansite.com. I've found a Tutorial that suggest that you need access to server's http.conf - this is quite unlikely on shared hosting. Is it really neccesary? Maybe You can set it up with .htaccess or any other way. Namely: what should I do to have such a configuration working ? (after setting Language negotiation to Domain name only on .../admin/settings/language/configure)

  Hi, I'm writing an extension method called ToPhoneFormat that formats a string of digits to phone numbers. Is it possible to add a parameter to the method that would enable me to call it like this: MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(international code) That way, I could write MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(1); to format a US phone number and MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(33) to format a French phone number. I already wrote the method that does the formatting but I'm wondering how to build the constructor so that it works with a parameter when I'm calling it. Thanks.

Is there any way to give current user (IIS User, in this case, ASP NET USER) permission to write to a specific folder location (folder inside our web application) using web.config? Because, it's getting boring to ask to the web hoster to gain access to a specific folder each time we want to do a file uploader on a website. I know it's maybe preaty simple to find an answer using google, but it keeps returning me how to write INTO web.config instead of permission to write into web.config FOR a specific folder. • How to read and write UTF-8 to disk on the Android?

  I cannot read and write extended characters (French accented characters, for example) to a text file using the standard InputStreamReader methods shown in the Android API examples. When I read back the file using: InputStreamReader tmp = new InputStreamReader(in); BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(tmp); String str; while ((str = reader.readLine()) != null) { ... the string read is truncated at the extended characters instead of at the end-of-line. The second half of the string then comes on the next line. I'm assuming that I need to persist my data as UTF-8 but I cannot find any examples of that, and I'm new to Java. Can anyone provide me with an example or a link to relevant documentation?

• Java application failing on special characters.

  An application I am working on reads information from files to populate a database. Some of the characters in the files are non-English, for example accented French characters. The application is working fine in Windows but on our Solaris machine it is failing to recognise the special characters and is throwing an exception. For example when it encounters the accented e in "Gérer" it says :- Encountered: "\u0161" (353), after : "\'G\u00c3\u00a9rer les mod\u00c3" (an exception which is thrown from our application) I suspect that in order to stop this from happening I need to change the file.encoding property of the JVM. I tried to do this via System.setProperty() but it has not stopped the error from occurring. Are there any suggestions for what I could do? I was thinking about setting the basic locale of the solaris platform in /etc/default/init to be UTF-8. Does anyone think this might help? Any thoughts are much appreciated.

• How do i impress employers with my resume?

  I built a entire website from scratch in 10days which looks and feels professional with the site being unique. The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

  I'm after a regex that puts spaces around each "-" in a string, eg. 02 jaguar-leopard, tiger-panther 08 would become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 Note that if the "-" already has spaces around it, no changes are to be made, eg. 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 should not become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 The number of hyphens are unknown in advance. Thanks for any ideas... Edit: I'm not actually using a language for this. I'm using Ant Renamer (a mass file renaming utility). There are two fields in the renamer GUI, "Expression" and "New name" to provide inputs. • QLocale, what is the scope of the global QLocale::setDefault()?

  Problem: I have a QT based multiplatform (win,mac,*nix) application that parses ascii files containing decimal numbers. parsing is done using a variety of different code pieces that use anything from qt string stuff, c++ stdin, oldstyle scanf, etc. ascii files have always the '.' (dot) as separated decimal (e.g. in the file to be parsed 1/10 is written 0.1 as standard in many countries). people using the application within a OS localized for using comma separated decimal encounter a lot of problems (e.g. for french users scanf expect to find 0,1 as a valid textual representation of 1/10 and if they find 0.1 scanf will parse it as 0) How can I be sure that the OS Locale indication of how decimal point has to be written is always ignored? Is it safe assuming that adding QLocale::setDefault(QLocale(QLocale::English,QLocale::UnitedStates)); is enough to get rid of all these problems? Any suggestion for portable ways of setting the locale globally?
