• IDC Recommends Oracle Solaris 11

  IDC published a research report this week on Oracle Solaris 11 and described it as "Delivering unique value."  The report emphasizes the ability of Oracle Solaris to scale up and provide a mission critical platform for a wide variety of computing. Solaris built-in server and network virtualization helps to lower costs and enable consolidation while reducing administration costs and risks. Learn more about Oracle Solaris and the recently announced 11.1 update. In their conclusion, IDC reports: Today, Oracle is a multi-OS vendor that is adjusting to the opportunities presented by a significantly expanded product portfolio. The company has a long history of supporting Unix operating systems with its broad product portfolio, but the main difference is that now Oracle has direct control over the destiny of the Solaris operating system. • Windows 8.1 Upgrade: I have to run everything as administrator now?

  I was running Windows 8 x64 Professional before and I never had to run programs as administrator to get them to function fully. Examples: Chrome OpenVPN GUI I always have my user under the local "Administrators" group and also disable UAC by putting the slider for it at the very bottom. This always did the trick. After the Windows 8.1 upgrade, I run into a few issues: Running Chrome normally, the Chrome icon doesn't appear in the taskbar. Chrome won't run in the background. OpenVPN GUI has errors when launching. Running both as administrator (Right Click Run as Administrator) fixes those issues and they run perfectly. What has changed in Windows 8.1 upgrade to cause these "problems"? I'm an advanced user, I don't want to have to worry about administrative rights. Any advice on how to fix these problems? EDIT I also get prompted for administrator permission to delete directories under "Program Files" now... that never used to happen before. I can hit Continue and it will allow me to delete, but just another symptom of the problem...

• To Virtual or Not to Virtual

  I recently made a comment "I hate everything virtual" while responding to a SQL server performance question.  I then promptly fired up my Hyper-V development environment to do my proof of concept stuff, and realized that I made the cardinal sin of making a generalized comment about something, instead of saying "It depends". The bottom line is if the virtual environment gives the throughput that the server needs, then it is not that big of a deal.  I just have seen so many environment set up with SQL server sitting in virtual environment sitting in a SAN, so on top of having to plan for loss data, I now have to plan for my virtual environment failing for so many different reasons, thought SQL 2012 High Availability Group should make that easier.  To me, a virtual environment makes sense for a stateless application with big scalibility requirement, but doesn't give much benefit to an application where performance and data integrity are both important.  If security is not a concern, I would just build servers with multiple instances on them to balance the workload. Maybe this is also too generalized a comment, and I'll confess that I'm not a DBA by trade.  I'd love to hear the pros and cons of virtualizing a SQL server, or other examples where virtualization makes total sense (not just money, but recovery, rollback, etc.)

Junction ? x x ? x Scenario Let's assume we're creating a reparse point to create the redirect C:\SomeDir => D:\SomeDir Since this scenario only requires local, absolute paths, either a junction or symlink would work. In this situation, is there any advantage to using one or the other? Assume Windows 7 for the OS, disregarding backward-compatibility (prior to Vista, symlinks are not supported). Update I have found another difference. Symbolic Link - Link's permissions only affect delete/rename operations on the link itself, read/write access (to the target) is governed by the target's permissions Junction - Junction's permissions affect enumeration, revoking permissions on the junction will deny file listing through that junction, even if the target folder has more permissive ACLs The permissions make it interesting, as symlinks can allow legacy applications to access configuration files in UAC-restricted areas (such as %ProgramFiles%) without changing existing access permissions, by storing the files in a non-restricted location and creating symlinks in the restricted directory.

• Changing the Start Menu Power Button - Setting does not work: only (Shut down) is available

  This is the second time I try to change this setting on a Vista based OS and I can't get it to work again. OS: Windows Server 2002 SP2 (not R2) = Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002] = Vista When I go to: Power Options - Change Plan Settings - Change advanced power settings - Power buttons and lid - Start menu power button - Setting: the available combo box will only show the option Shut down. No other options are available. This server is part of a domain and has not been set up by me. I have not yet talked with the domain admin, but as far as I could tell from googling, only Win7 has group policy options for the start menu. (And yes, OC I will talk to the domain admin to see if he has any clue - which I doubt.) (Edit: I have now talked to our domain admin, and he's got no clue either.) I'm responsible for this server and a local administrator but not a domain administrator. I switched off User Account Control (UAC) yesterday without problems. Since I always log into this machine via RDP and this being a server, the natural choice would be the option (Log out) and not (Shut down). What can I do to fix it or to find out why it cannot be changed? Thanks!

• Performance impact of Zones.

  I was really astonished when i saw this question. Because this question was a old acquaintance from years ago, that i didn't heard for a long time. However there was it again. The question: "What's the overhead of Zones?". Sun was and Oracle is not saying "zero". We saying saying minimal. However during all the performance analysis gigs on customer systems i made since the introduction of Zones i failed to measure any overhead caused by zones. What i saw however, was additional load intoduced by processes that wouldn't be there when you would use only one zone Like additional monitoring daemons, like additional daemons having a controlling or supervising job for the application that resulted in slighly longer runtimes of processes, because such additional daemons wanted some cycles on the CPU as well. So i ask when someone wants to tell me that he measured a slight slowdown, if he or she has really measured the impact of the virtualization layer or of a side effect described above. It seems to be a little bit hard to believe, that a virtualisation technology has no overhead, however keep in mind that there is no hypervisor and just one kernel running that looks and behaves like many operating system instances to apps and users. While this imposes some limits to the technology (because there is just one kernel running you can't have zones with different kernels versions running ... obvious even to the cursory observer), but that is key to it's lightweightness and thus to the low overhead. • If I want to dual-boot Ubuntu with another OS, what partitioning method should I use?

  I have Ubuntu running as a vm in VirtualBox at the moment, but in the future, if I want to dual-boot it with Windows or another OS installed on my hard-drive, what partitioning method should I use to make room for it? 1)Manually partition my hard drive via disk management in Windows (or the equivalent in another OS), making appropriate room for the main partition upon which Ubuntu will be installed and swap space; 2)Partition via the Ubuntu installer options; 3)Use gparted or another free tool like it. I am uncertain as to why I would want to use one over the other. Lastly, am I correct to think that it would be the acme of foolishness to try to partition drives within a virtual machine (since that partitioning would be inherently limited to the limitations set upon it by the virtualization software, e.g., VirtualBox)? Thanks! P.S. Oh, and I am also planning on not modifying the MBR of Windows if I ever do dual-boot with Ubuntu, using instead a piece of free software (like easyBCD or something) to avoid the headaches of Grub being overwritten by a Windows update.

  A lot of the recent blog entries here have been about Oracle VM VirtualBox, possibly the coolest personal desktop virtualization product known to man. Deploying VirtualBox on your PC or Mac lets you run many virtual desktops at the same time to one user, you. But did you know that VirtualBox can also power an Enterprise-scale virtual desktop deployment too, delivering many desktops to many users?  As part of another Oracle product, Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), VirtualBox can run your Windows, Linux or Solaris desktops on servers located in the datacenter. • Windows preventing running of Telnet client

  At first, I had issues because Windows 7 doesn't install the Telnet client by default (also, SuperUser has a thread). So, after installing it (and restarting, like Windows asked, though completely unnecessary), I opened a command prompt, and went to run my new Telnet program. I enter telnet, and receive: C:\Users\[USER]>telnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "That's odd," I think to myself. So, in Windows explorer, I navigate to \Windows\System32 and see telnet.exe sitting in that folder. If I double-click on the executable file, the Telnet command prompt opens for me without a problem. So, I return to my Windows Command Prompt, and enter: C:\Users\[USER]>\Windows\System32\telnet.exe '\Windows\System32\telnet.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. And then (grep comes from cygwin): C:\Users\ryan\Desktop>dir \Windows\System32 | grep telnet Nothing. I've disabled UAC and have no idea why my Command Prompt is lying to me. Anyone experience something similar? To recap: In Windows 7, I have installed Telnet and can see it in my System32 folder, but cannot run it via a Command Prompt.

• Notepad and Regedit does not launch from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, but will from C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  My work machine was recently updated from Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I have found a few odd things that I can not figure out why they are occurring. If I type in Notepad.exe or RegEdit.exe from the Run diaglog the applications will not launch. When executing RegEdit.exe from the Run dialog the UAC does display asking for admin privileges, but the application never launches. Also, if I go to the Start menu and click on Notepad from there, Notepad never launches either. Other programs seem to be okay, like mspaint, wordpad, etc. Now, if I launch Notepad or RegEdit from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 then these applications will run, though I think these are the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version. I am not sure what is going on. Has anyone seen this behavior before and how to fix it? I have Windows 7 64-bit at home and I don't have this issue. I even copied Notepad.exe from home and place it in the C:\ folder and tried to launch it from there and it still doesn't work. Regards, Mark

• VMware Converter errors when creating Boot Camp VM

  I just got a new computer. My old computer had a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7, with VMWare running the Boot Camp installation in a virtual machine. On my new computer, I want Windows to strictly be a VM, so I downloaded the VMWare Converter software to create a virtual machine out of the Boot Camp partition. After finishing 95% of the converting process, I get a few messages Warning: Failed while updating boot.ini on the target machine's system volume. Warning: Failed while updating drive letters for the target volume layout. Error: Reconfiguration failed. And then it fails with FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible. I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it...I don't know much about virtualization or dual booting other than the simple instructions on how to set it up the first time.

  I have Fedora 11 and trying to get Xen working (which I think it is already) but the Virtual Machine Manager cannot find the hypervisor. When starting Virtual Machine Manager, I receive the following error Error determining default hypervisor. Could not populate a default connection. Make sure the appropriate virtualization packages are installed (kvm, qemu, etc.) and that libvirtd has been restarted to notice the change. A hypervisor connection can be manually added via File - Add Connection I've restarted libvirtd a few times and tried connecting manually but can't work it out. • WPF ListView Keyboard Navigation Problem

  I've a listview like this ListView: ————----- Mango Orange Grapes Grapes Grapes Apple Strawberry Whenever i navigate using downarrow, the BlueHighlight pauses at the first Grapes, a dotted rectangle start from second grapes and pauses at the third grapes, then the BlueHighlight resumes from Apple. This seems weird and it grows more weird when the navigation is upwards. It jumps from Apple to Orange or mango. Is this due to Virtualization? It seems only the duplicate data (grapes) is creating the problem. Any Help?

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

  I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

  There are many approaches when it goes about running untrusted code on typical CPU : sandboxes, fake-roots, virtualization... What about untrusted code for GPGPU (OpenCL,cuda or already compiled one) ? Assuming that memory on graphics card is cleared before running such third-party untrusted code, are there any security risks? What kind of risks? Any way to prevent them ? (Possible sandboxing on gpgpu or other technique?) P.S. I am more interested in gpu binary code level security rather than hight-level gpgpu programming language security (But those solutions are welcome as well). What I mean is that references to gpu opcodes (a.k.a machine code) are welcome.

  When it comes to virtualization, I have been deliberating on the relationship between the physical cores and the virtual cores, especially in how it effects applications employing parallelism. For example, in a VM scenario, if there are less physical cores than there are virtual cores, if that's possible, what's the effect or limits placed on the application's parallel processing? I'm asking, because in my environment, it's not disclosed as to what the physical architecture is. Is there still much advantage to parallelizing if the application lives on a dual core VM hosted on a single core physical machine?
