• LINQ EF not saving to database...

  I guess this is a continuation of the last question I asked: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2587542/bulk-insert-and-update-with-ado-net-entity-framework. I am not getting any errors while doing inserts yet no data is actually going into my DB. My DB is a SDF file (SQL CE). Any ideas what to check? • VB6 ActiveX exe - what is the proper registration sequence?

  I have recently updated a Visual Basic 6 application that is an ActiveX exe, running on Windows XP. I have a couple of testers for this application who have received a copy of the exe and are attempting to run it. However, they are getting an error message "Unexpected error;quitting" when trying to do so. A key difference between their testing and my testing is that on the machines I tested on, I have admin rights and was able to register the application using the appname.exe /regserver command line. Reading the details at MS Support about file registration appears unclear: Visual Basic ActiveX EXE files register themselves the first time you run the EXE. However, you cannot use the EXE as a COM server until it is registered. So does this mean that after the first time the users run the exe that the application should be correctly registered, and the error I am receiving is sign of something other than an incorrectly registered application? Or does this mean that the application will not work properly until such time as the file is explicitly registered using the appname.exe /regserver command line? nb - during a production distribution, the software would be sent out to client PCs using Systems Management Server, which isn't an option for this testing.

• In Rails, how would I include a section of a page only if the rest of the page doesn't match a certain regexp?

  We have a site with a lot of user-generated content, and we'd like to show Google ads on it. Some of the content is such that we mustn't show the ads on pages containing that content, or else the whole site gets banned. We've come up with a regexp which we think will match all the offending content. So, three approaches come to mind: Render the page once without the ad section, and then insert the ad section into it if it's clean Render the page as normal, and do the insertion in client-side javascript Render the page above the ad section, capturing only the parts of the page that change; make sure there are no changing parts afterwards. Only show the ads if the captured text is clean, and make sure the unchanging, uncaptured parts are well-vetted in advance. The first one seems like it might delay the page rendering for too long; the second seems like it might delay showing the ads too long; and the third seems too fragile. Is there a better approach? If not, which one is the best solution of the three?

  I am migrating a Java RMI application to Java Web Service (school assignment) and I've encountered an issue... Currently my Java Server creates an instance of the Remote Object, this object has a constructor and takes a parameter (int ID) which tells it which database to load in memory - works like a charm ... Now, migrating this to Web Services is causing my a problem - first I needed to add a default constructor because it wouldn't deploy without it, and then while doing some reading all these discussions about "stateless web services" kept coming up ... For example, if I "start" my webservice with parameter(0) it would load from Databse 0 and all requests from Clients would be done using that data... I want this to only happen when I start the WebService and NOT everytime the client connects... Loading from the DB is expensive and takes time, so I want to do it once so that clients when they connect just deal with the data in memory ... This is how it works with my Java RMI .... but can this also work with Web Services? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks,

• HTML form with single text field + preventing postback in Internet Explorer

  I have noticed a rather strange behaviour in IE. I have a HTML form with a single input text field and a submit button On Submit click I need to execute a client side JavaScript function that does the necessary. Now when I want to prevent the postback in the text field (on enter key press) I have added a key press JavaScript function that looks like this: <input type=text onkeypress="return OnEnterKeyPress(event)" /> function OnEnterKeyPress(event) { var keyNum = 0; if (window.event) // IE { keyNum = event.keyCode; } else if (event.which) // Netscape/Firefox/Opera { keyNum = event.which; } else return true; if (keyNum == 13) // Enter Key pressed, then start search, else do nothing. { OnButtonClick(); return false; } else return true; } Strangly this doesn't work.   I have to get a quick demo for a client, so this is a bit hacky. Please don't flame me too much! :-) I'm getting a string similar to the following back from the database: The object of the following is to do: * blah 1 * blah 2 * blah 3 * blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. I need to format this so that each * represents a bullet point, and the sentence after the last * goes onto a new line, ideally as follows: The object of the following is to do: blah 1 (StackOverflow wants to add bullet points here, but I just need '*') blah 2 blah 3 blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. It's easy enough to split the string by the * character and replace that with <br /> *. I'm using the following for that: string description = GetDescription(); description = description.Replace("*", "<br />*"); // it's going onto a web page. but the result this gives me is: The object of the following is to do: blah 1 blah 2 blah 3 blah 4. Some more extremely uninteresting text. Followed by yet another sentence full of extrememly uninteresting text. Thankfully this is the last sentence. I'm having a bit of difficulty identifying the fist sentence after the last '*' so I can put a break there too. Can somebody show me how to do this?

• Determine mouse click for all screen resolutions

Later I retrieve it and display where all the clicks happened on that page. This works fine if I do all my clicks in one resolution, and then display it back in the same resolution, but this not the case. there can be large amounts of resolutions used. In my test case I was clicking on the screen with a screen resolution of 1260x1080. I retrieved all the data and displayed it in the same resolution. But when I use a different monitor (tried 1024x768 and 1920x1080. The marks shift to the incorrect spot. My question is, if I am storing the width and height of the client, and the x/y position of the click. If 3 different users all with different screen resolutions click on the same word, and a 4th user goes to view where all of those clicks happened, how can I plot the x/y position correctly to show that everyone clicked in the same space, no matter the resolution? If this belongs in a better section, please let me know as well.

• Wordpress Contact Form 7 in a hidden div.

  Hi there, I'm using Contact Form 7 on Wordpress. I have it set up so the upload appears in the 3rd of three divs that hide and show depending on a clicked link. Everything is fine except when I click submit it hides the uploads div and shows the first div again. The form is submitting fine and you see a message that it has sent if you navigate back to the uploads section. Is there any way to keep the div you're in open and keep the rest hidden on submit? • Codeigniter: how should I restructure db schema?

  I don't even know if that's the right term. May it be known that I'm a major novice! I have three tables: users, profiles, and survey. Each one has user_id as it's first field, (auto-increment for users), and they're all tied by a foreign key constraint, CASCADE on DELETE. Currently, for each user, let's say user_id 1, they have a corresponding db entry in the other tables. For profiles it lists all their information, and the survey table holds all their survey information. Now I must change things...darn scope creep. Users need the ability to have multiple survey results. I imagine that this would be similar to a comment table for a blog... My entire app runs around the idea that a single user is linked to a constraining profile and survey. How should I structure my db? How should I design my app's db so that a user can have multiple tests/profiles for the test? Please assist! Any advice, information and personal-knowledge is appreciated! Right now the only way I know how to accompany my client is to create a pseudo-user for each test (so unnecessary) and list them in a view table (called "your tests")-- these are obtained from the db by saying: where user_id=manager_id

• creating new instance fails PHP

  I am relatively new to PHP and having some decent success however I am running into this issue: If I try to create a new instance of the class GenericEntryVO, I get a 500 error with little to no helpful error information. However, if I use a generic object as the result, I get no errors. I'd like to be able to cast this object as a GenericEntryVO as I am using AMFPHP to communicate serialize data with a Flex client.   I am receiving an error that states: "The HTTP verb POST used to access path '[my path]' is not allowed.". The error is being caused by the fact that I am implementing an HTML form element that uses the POST method and does not explicitly define an .aspx page in its ACTION parameter. For example: <form action="" method="post"> <input type="submit" /> </form> The HTML above is on a file at "/foo/default.aspx". Now, if the user points the URL to the root directory "foo" without specifying the aspx file (i.e. "http://localhost/foo") and then submits the form, the error "The HTTP verb POST used to access path '/foo' is not allowed." will be thrown. However, if the user goes to "http://localhost/foo/default.aspx" and then submits the form, all goes well (even if the ACTION parameter is left empty). Note: If I explicitly add the name of the .aspx (default.aspx) page to the ACTION parameter, no errors are thrown. So the example below works fine regardless if the user defines the name of the file in the URL or not. <form action="default.aspx" method="post"> <input type="submit" /> </form> I was curious as to why the error was being thrown, so I read a Microsoft KB that states This problem occurs because a client makes an HTTP request by sending the POST method to a static HTML page. Static HTML pages do not support the POST method. I suppose the core of the explanation makes sense, however in my case, my form is not being sent to a static html page - it's being sent to the same page that the html form lives on (default.aspx)... this is implicit to an ACTION param that is left empty. Is it possible to configure IIS (or otherwise) that will allow us to do form POSTing and keep the ACTION param empty?

• Make joomla blog link to inner pages(or blog roll post actual)

  So i was told to create a blog for client in Joomla and, i have minimal knowledge of Joomla inner workings. I made the blog as seen here http://www.assurancepower.com/about-us/blog.html But the problem is that, the headers/titles for each story in that blog roll cant be clicked. Im wondering is there a way i can make this happen? Essentially this page is a collection of the stories and i want to be able to click on a particular one (any of them) and be taken to its inner page/full version of the story. Not exactly sure what im supposed to do/search for. Im not sure if joomla has a wordpress like functions.php or for example, is there somewhere i can instert a....maybe something like how wordpress does it with permalinks like so: <?php permalink(); ?> //title link here to the actual story. or something like <?php bloginfo('url');?>// this relative link for WP. Etc, All i want is to be able to have these titles in this story be active links to their full counterpart. Not sure what to look for/how to go about fixing this. Thanks in advanced.

  I'm making a site for European client and he said Firefox 3 and IE 7 and 8 has more user than others browser for desktop in Europe http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-eu-monthly-200812-201001-bar I've only IE 7 and Firefox 3.5.7 installed in my PC. Should I download portable Firefox 3.0 and test in it too even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in Firefox 3.5 or testing in 3.5.7 would be enough? And for IE testing in IE 7 would be enough or should i check my site in IE8 (downloading VPC image of IE8 and testing in VM) even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in IE8? Or is it necessary to use <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /> in <head> ? But what will happen when user will switch compatibility mode to IE 8 default rendering mode? Can we make site compatible in IE 7 and 8 both without using <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />? If yes, then what special we need to do.care/consider in css to make site identical in both?

• Getting a stream back from a .Net remoting service that is accessible with IP v4 and v6

  My company has an existing .Net Remoting service that listens on a port, fronting interfaces used by external systems. This all works great with IP v4 based communications. However, this service now needs to support both IP v4 communications and IP v6 communications. I have found info that the system.runtime.remoting section of the app.config should include two channels as follows: <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp6" port="9000" bindTo="[::]" /> <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp4" port="9000" bindTo="0.0.0.0" /> The above config file changes to the System.Runtime.Remoting config section will get the remoting service responding to non-stream functions on both ip v4 and ip v6. The issue comes only when attempting to get a stream back, used to upload or download large files. In this case, instead of getting a usable stream back, the following ArgumentException is thrown instead: IPv4 address 0.0.0.0 and IPv6 address ::0 are unspecified addresses that cannot be used as a target address. Parameter name: hostNameOrAddress Is there a way to modify the app.config (in the system.runtime.remoting section, or another section) so that the service will return a stream mapped to a real ip so the client can actually upload/download files while maintaining the ability to use both IP v4 and IP v6?

  I'm stuck on a query with a join. The client's site is running mysql4, so a subquery isn't an option. My attempts to rewrite using a join aren't going too well. I need to select all of the contractors listed in the contractors table who are not in the contractors2label table with a given label ID & county ID. Yet, they might be listed in contractors2label with other label and county IDs. Table: contractors cID (primary, autonumber) company (varchar) ...etc... Table: contractors2label cID labelID countyID psID This query with a subquery works: SELECT company, contractors.cID FROM contractors WHERE contractors.complete = 1 AND contractors.archived = 0 AND contractors.cID NOT IN ( SELECT contractors2label.cID FROM contractors2label WHERE labelID <> 1 AND countyID <> 1 ) I thought this query with a join would be the equivalent, but it returns no results. A manual scan of the data shows I should get 34 rows, which is what the subquery above returns. SELECT company, contractors.cID FROM contractors LEFT OUTER JOIN contractors2label ON contractors.cID = contractors2label.cID WHERE contractors.complete = 1 AND contractors.archived = 0 AND contractors2label.labelID <> 1 AND contractors2label.countyID <> 1 AND contractors2label.cID IS NULL

• Is there any way to access codeigniter language and config properties from included javascript files

  Good morning! I'm having great success so far with CodeIgniter. I'm new to PHP and web development in general, but I feel that CodeIgniter is giving me a leg up while I catch up on the basics. My question for today is this - I have been happily loading config and lang values from my views for a while now, and everything is working fine. But what about JavaScript files being linked into my views? Is there any way to make the $this-lang-line and $this-config-item function references available to me in my JavaScript files? I am implementing jQuery client-side validation, and would like to pull in my error messages from the server, both to support internationalisation and to make sure that validation gracefully degrades if JavaScript is not available, in that the error messages pushed back into the view from the server-side validation are identical to those displayed dynamically by the jQuery validation. I would not like to have to keep coming back to make sure that these strings are kept in sync. As for internationalisation, I'm fresh out of ideas on how to support that if it turns out that lang and config item strings are completely unavailable from my JS files. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! :)

• Meteor: how to update DOM via Javascript without a page refresh?

  UPDATE: It looks like this script may be the catalyst I'm looking for. Will test it and answer/close this question if so. I'm sure I'll find the answer to this eventually, but I'm putting it out there now, in case someone else knows it right off... I am using RaphaelJS to manipulate the DOM (adds a bunch of SVG tags to an identified DIV), and I want to re-render those specific DOM parts, if there's an update to the MongoDB collection. As an example: -Let's say that I have a collection called PiePieces. -When the page is first rendered/ called, let's pretend that the number of pieces in the collection is 4. -I programmatically add a pie piece using console: PiePieces.insert({...}) -I want the page to update like it would for a standard handlebars binding situation, but the problem is, the new entry needs to go through the Raphael script, which performs direct DOM manipulation. So, the logic would go something like this: MongoDB collection update event - Client function call to manipulate DOM - DOM modified/ page updated without a refresh. I've tried implementing this by reading values from the DOM itself, and I can get the updated DOM, but the entire page refreshes and/or I have to manually refresh the page, OR the DOM tree isn't completed yet, and so it's blank until I refresh. Can you point me in the right direction, maybe with a small code snippet/example? (if something similar already exists, just tell me where and I'll go digging) Thanks in advance! • Custom API requirement

  We are currently working on an API for an existing system. It basically wraps some web-requests as an easy-to-use library that 3rd party companies should be able to use with our product. As part of the API, there is an event mechanism where the server can call back to the client via a constantly-running socket connection. To minimize load on the server, we want to only have one connection per computer. Currently there is a socket open per process, and that could eventually cause load problems if you had multiple applications using the API. So my question is: if we want to deploy our API as a single standalone assembly, what is the best way to fix our problem? A couple options we thought of: Write an out of process COM object (don't know if that works in .Net) Include a second exe file that would be required for events, it would have to single-instance itself, and open a named pipe or something to communicate through multiple processes Extract this exe file from an embedded resource and execute it None of those really seem ideal. Any better ideas?

• Sending Email to a specific address without requiring user to specify their mail server details

  Can anyone recommend a simple and reliable method of sending email notifications and possibly log files attachments from a C# program without requiring the installer or the user to configure the program by specifying server details and email addresses etc. (Mainly because they won't know the details, but also because they could change) The program will normally be run as a service of a Windows Server, but can be run on a client. I tried connecting to our own mail server and sending a email to myself, but some ISP's are blocking Port 25 on all servers but their own, so that method isn't working reliably. Tried sending email through gmail but that was less successful as the port they used was blocked by firewalls. Ditto webservices connecting on weird ports. Trying to use the local smptservice but did not work either. It would be nice, but not essential if it was not dependant on my own Internet connection/Servers. (Don't mind them being delayed, but prefer them not to get lost). Are there any webservices on http/https that allow you to do this sort of thing? TIA

• Manipulating/changing adressbar link Help

  I am out of my own "ideas" going through this. I have a album viewer. When you click next I want the adressbar to hang with it, e.g if you start on ?photoid=1, and click next (next picture appends and stuff), and then i want it to say ?photoid=2. Now I cant make it say ?photoid=2 without changing/manipulating, and this you cant do without HTML5. I have made a script in HTML5 that works fine, but then I need to take care of those who dont have HTML5(only chrome, ff4 etc supports html5) Made the script from this( https://developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/Manipulating_the_browser_history ) I thought of adding #photoid=2 so, ?photoid=1#photoid=2 and then check if theres anything in # then use that instead of the $_GET.. But apparently you cannot do that as # is client side handled and never sent to the server. So what should I then do? Any suggestions please to make a workaround this? I checked facebook, what they did to IE users, and I could hear that it "clicked" (the annoying click sound from IE) twice.. the first was to get to the next picture, the second click sound changed the adressbar?!(how?). And then I also thought hey, html5 is only supported in ff4, and I got ff3.6, and they manipulate the adress bar url when you browse through the album photos, exactly like how I wanted (and what I have written for but it only works in Chrome and ff4..?). How could they do that?

• What happens to exinsting workspaces after upgrading to TFS 2010

  Hi, I was looking for some insight about what happens to existing workspaces and files that are already checked-out on people, after an upgrade to TFS2010. Surprisingly enough I can not find any satisfactory information on this. (I am talking about upgrading on new hardware by the way. Fresh TFS instance, upgraded databases) I've checked TFS Installation guide, I searched through the web, all I could find is upgrade scenarios for the server side. Nobody even mentions what happens to source control clients. I've created a virtual machine to test the upgrade process, The upgrade was successful and all my files and workspaces exist in the new server too. The problem is: The new TFS installation has a new instanceID. When I redirected on the clients to the new server, the client seemed unable to match files and file states in the workspace with the ones on the new server. This makes me wonder if it will be possible to keep working after the production upgrade. As I mentioned above I can not find anything on this, it would be great if anyone could point me to some paper or blog post about this. Thanks in advance...

• MySQL + Joomla + remote c# access

  Hello, I work on a Joomla web site, installed on a MySQL database and running on IIS7. It's all working fine. I now need to add functionality that lets (Joomla-)registered users change some configuration data. Though I haven't done this yet, it looks straightforward enough to do with Joomla. The data is private so all external access will be done through HTTPS. I also need an existing c# program, running on another machine, to read that configuration data. Sure enough, this data access needs to be as fast as possible. The data will be small (and filtered by query), but the latency should be kept to a minimum. A short-term, client-side cache (less than a minute, in case a user updates his configuration data) seems like a good idea. I have done practically zero database/asp programming so far, so what's the best way of doing that last step? Should the c# program access the database 'directly' (using what? LINQ?) or setup some sort of Facade (SOAP?) service? If a service should be used, should it be done through Joomla or with ASP on IIS? Thanks

  I've written a few jquery plugins for my client. I want to write a function which would initialize each plugin which have been loaded. Example: <script src="/Scripts/jquery.plugin1.min.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/jquery.plugin2.min.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/jquery.initializer.min.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> Here I've loaded plugin1 and plugin2. Plugin1 should be attached to all links with class name 'ajax' and plugin2 to all divs with class name 'test2': $('document').ready(function(){ $('a.ajax').plugin1(); $('div.test2').plugin2(); } I know that I can use jQuery().pluginName to check if a plugin exists. But I want to have a leaner way. Can all loaded plugins register a initialize function in an array or something like that which I in document.ready can iterate through and invoke? like: //in plugin1.js myCustomPlugins['plugin1'] = function() { $('a.ajax').plugin1(); }; // and in the initializer script: myCustomPlugins.each(function() { this(); }; Guess it all boiled down to three questions: How do I use a jquery "global" array? How do I iterate through that array to invoke registered methods Are there a better approach?
