• Embedded non-relational (nosql) data store

  I'm thinking about using/implementing some kind of an embedded key-value (or document) store for my Windows desktop application. I want to be able to store various types of data (GPS tracks would be one example) and of course be able to query this data. The amount of data would be such that it couldn't all be loaded into memory at the same time. I'm thinking about using sqlite as a storage engine for a key-value store, something like y-serial, but written in .NET. I've also read about FriendFeed's usage of MySQL to store schema-less data, which is a good pointer on how to use RDBMS for non-relational data. sqlite seems to be a good option because of its simplicity, portability and library size. My question is whether there are any other options for an embedded non-relational store? It doesn't need to be distributable and it doesn't have to support transactions, but it does have to be accessible from .NET and it should have a small download size. UPDATE: I've found an article titled SQLite as a Key-Value Database which compares sqlite with Berkeley DB, which is an embedded key-value store library.

• Why would delaying a thread response fix view corruption?

  6 times out of 10 my very simple iPhone app is getting a corrupted display on launch or crashes randomly. But it behaves fine in the simulator. The display corruption looks like mis-colored fonts, out of place font text, wrong background colors, etc. I've found a strange work-around.. when my thread delays by 2 seconds before calling the "done" notification, everything works swimmingly. The thread reads a web page and the "done" notification loads up a PickerView with strings. So what gives? • ASP.NET NamingContainer naming convention

  The Background Hello! I'm working on a project in which the client has required a lot of things to happen on a single page, and this has resulted in a rather large blob of HTML being rendered out to the client browser. The main issue is with input tags (where runat="server" attribute is set), these tend to cause a drastic increase in markup size due to validation, updatepanel triggers, viewstate, and the control markup itself. I've done what I can to reduce the amount of triggers I'm using, I'm compressing the viewstate (to something like 8% of the original viewstate size), I've gotten rid of a lot of ASP.NET Validators and rolled my own, and and I've been using ClientIdMode to reduce the length of the ID attributes of many asp.net elements. All of these combined significantly reduces the amount of HTML being sent to the client, (for example going from 2 megabytes for a request down to 500-600 kb - these are HUGE pages, mind you). The Issue One area which I've been having trouble reducing is simply the auto-generated 'name' attribute of input elements. <input name="ctl00$ctl00$ctl00$_main$_main$_bodyMatterPhase$_phaseTree$ctl00$_taskTree$ctl00$_taskDetails$_detailList$ctrl0$_row$_descriptionText" type="text" value="Investigation Week 1" maxlength="100" id="_taskTree_0__taskDetails_0__detailList_0__row_0__descriptionText_0" style="width:170px;"> As you can see above, the name attribute is 139 out of 297 characters, that's almost 50% of the tag markup taken up by that HUGE name. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stick a hook in somewhere in ASP.NET where I can somehow translate these or generate them differently; say instead of ctl00$ctl00$ctl00$_main$_main$_bodyMatterPhase$_phaseTree$ctl00$_taskTree$ctl00$_taskDetails$_detailList$ctrl0$_row$_descriptionText, it could be a GUID like 0x0AEED4B6445A11E08F873606E0D72085, which is 105 characters shorter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• IPhone SDK - Leaking Memory with performSelectorInBackground

  Hi. Maybe someone can help me with this strange thing: If a user clicks on a button, a new UITableView is pushed to the navigation controller. This new view is doing some database querying which takes some time. Therefore I wanted to do the loading in background. • jQuery carousel in a div with display:none

  I have to use on my site a jQuery responsive carousel with 4 displayed items that slide one at a time, etc etc. The point is: this carousel is placed in a div with display:none and it appears clicking on a button with a slideToggle script (jQuery). Well, when the div appears the carousel is not displayed. Nothing! Notice that if I remove the display:none the carousel shows perfectly. I've tried a bunch of carousel plugin (bxslider, caroufredsel, elastislide, flexslider) and this issue happens for all of them. And then... I'm going crazy!! • Silverlight MVVM binding seems not to work

  Hi everybody! Building my first SL MVVM application (Silverlight4 RC) and have some issues i don't understand. Having a WPF background i don't know what is going on here: ViewModel has several properties, in which one is called SelectedRecord. This is a get only property and is defined like this: public Culture SelectedRecord { get { return culturesView.View.CurrentItem as Culture; } } As you can see it is gets the current value of a CollectionViewSource (called culturesView). So if i select a Culture, the SelectedRecord (gets a value directly from within the CollectionViewSource) as expected. (Actually there is a datagrid control bound to the CollectionViewSource, hence it is possible to change the selected item) OK. Now to the View . There are several views which access this ViewModel and in particular there is one which shows the values of the aforementioned property SelectedRecord (let's call it the EditView). To show this EditView there is a button (which has its Command property bound to an ICommand in the ViewModel) which functions (the first time) as expected. This means: 1st try : i select a record, switch to EditView, outcome: selected record values are shown (as expected!!). 2nd try: switch back to datagrid, select another record, switch to EditView, outcome: the values of the previous shown record are shown again!!! WHY?? First i thought that the SelectedRecord has not the correct value set, but i was mistaken: it HAS the correct value! So it should be shown!? What am i missing? In WPF this would work!! • grep 5 seconds of input from the serial port inside a shell-script

  I've got a device that I'm operating next to my PC and as it runs it's spitting log lines out it's serial port. I have this wired to my PC and I can see the log lines fine if I'm using either minicom or something like: ttylog -b 115200 -d /dev/ttyS0 I want to write 5 seconds of the device serial output to a temp file (or assign it to a variable) and then later grep that file for keywords that will let me know how the device is operating. I've already tried redirecting the output to a file while running the command in the background, and then sleeping 5 seconds and killing the process, but the log lines never get written to my temp file. Example: touch tempFile ttylog -b 115200 -d /dev/ttyS0 >> tempFile & serialPID=$! sleep 5 #kill ${serialPID} #does not work, gets wrong PID killall ttylog cat tempFile The file gets created but never filled with any data. I can also replace the ttylog line with: ttylog -b 115200 -d /dev/ttyS0 |tee -a tempFile & In neither case do I ever see any log lines logged to stdout or the log file unless I have multiple versions of ttylog running by mistake (see commented out line, D'oh). I have no idea what's going on here. It seems to be a failure of redirection within my script. Am I on the right track? Is there a better way to sample 5 seconds of the serial port?

• Dojo dialog, the iPad and the virtual keyboard issue

  Recently, I have been working on a project where the interface should work for desktop and tablets (in particular the iPad). One issue I am coming across is with a Dojo dialog on the iPad when text entry is taking place. Basically here is what happens: Load Dojo interface with buttons on iPad - OK Press button (touch) to show dialog (90% height and width) - OK Click on text box (touch) like DateTextBox or TimeTextBox - OK, the virtual keyboard is opened Click the date or time I want in the UI (touch) - OK, but I can't see all of the options since it is longer than the screen size... Try to scroll down (swipe up with two fingers or click 'next' in the keyboard) - not OK and the dialog repositions itself to have it's top at the top of the viewport area. Basically, the issue is that the dialog keeps trying to reposition itself. Am I able to stop dialog resizing and positioning if I catch the window onResize events? Does anyone else have this issue with the iPad and Dojo dialogs? • Regexp that matches user-agents of end-user browsers but NOT crawlers with >90 % accuracy

  I'm trying to construct a regexp that will evaluate to true for User-Agent:s of "browsers navigated by humans", but false for bots. Needless to say the matching will not be exact, but if it gets things right in say 90 % of cases that is more than good enough. My approach so far is to target the User-Agent string of the the five major desktop browsers (MSIE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera). Specifically I want the regexp NOT to match if the user-agent is a bot (Googlebot, msnbot, etc.). Currently I'm using the following regexp which appears to achieve the desired precision: ^(Mozilla.*(Gecko|KHTML|MSIE|Presto|Trident)|Opera).*$ I've observed small number of false negatives which are mostly mobile browsers. The exceptions all match: (BlackBerry|HTC|LG|MOT|Nokia|NOKIAN|PLAYSTATION|PSP|SAMSUNG|SonyEricsson) My question is: Given the desired accuracy level, how would you improve the regexp? Can you think of any major false positives or false negatives to the given regexp? Please note that the question is specifically about regexp-based User-Agent matching. There are a bunch of other approaches to solving this problem, but those are out of the scope of this question.

  I have a "sync" task that relies on several "sub-tasks", which include asynchronous network operations, but which all require access to a single NSManagedObjectContext. Due to the threading requirements of NSManagedObjectContexts, I need every one of these sub-tasks to execute on the same thread. Due to the amount of processing being done in some of these tasks, I need them to be on a background thread. At the moment, I'm launching a new thread by doing this in my singleton SyncEngine object's -init method: [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(initializeSyncThread) withObject:nil]; The -initializeSyncThread method looks like this: - (void)initializeSyncThread { self.syncThread = [NSThread currentThread]; self.managedObjectContext = [(MyAppDelegate *)[UIApplication sharedApplication].delegate createManagedObjectContext]; NSRunLoop *runLoop = [NSRunLoop currentRunLoop]; [runLoop run]; } Is this the correct way to start up the NSRunLoop for this thread? Is there a better way to do it? The run loop only needs to handle 'performSelector' sources, and it (and its thread) should be around for the lifetime of the process. When it comes to setting up an NSAutoreleasePool, should I do this by using Run Loop Observers to create the autorelease pool and drain it after every run-through?

  Background I'm working on the architecture for a cloud-based LOB application, using Silverlight for the client, WCF, ASP.NET/C# for server and SQL Server for storage. The data model requires some flexibility per user (ability to add custom properties and define validation rules for them, for example), and a hybrid EAV/CR persistence model on the server side will suit nicely. Problem I need an efficient and maintainable technology and approach to handle the transformation from the persisted EAV model to/from WCF (and similarly allow the client to bind to the resulting data - DataGrid is a key UI element)? Admission: I don't yet know enough about WCF to understand if it supports ExpandoObject directly, but I suspect it will. Options I started off looking at WCF RIA services, but quickly discovered they're heavily dependent upon both static type data and compile-time code generation. Neither of these appeal. The options I'm considering include: Using WCF RIA services and pass the data over the network directly in EAV form (i.e. Dictionary), and handle the binding issue purely on the client side (like this) Using a dynamic language (probably IronPython) to handle both ends of the communication, with plumbing to generate the necessary CLR type data on the client to allow binding, and transform to/from EAV form on the server (spam preventer stopped me from posting a URL here, I'll try it in a comment). Dynamic LINQ (CreateClass() and friends), although I'm way out of my depth there and don't know what the limitations on that approach might be yet. I'm interested in comments on these approaches as well as alternative approaches that might solve the problem. Other Notes The Silverlight client will not be the only consumer of the service, making me slightly uncomfortable with option #1 above. While the data model is flexible, it's not expected to be modified heavily. For argument's sake, we could assume that we might have 25 distinct data models active at a given time, with something like 10-20 unique data fields/rules each. Modifications to the data model will happen infrequently (typically when a new user is initially configured).

• setInterval works only the first time

  Hi, I am trying to use setTimer to animate a slide show using straightforward jQuery. I provide the user with a button (in the form of a "DIV" with a button background image) that he clicks to start the show and which then turns into a pause button. The slides are supposed to change every 3 seconds. Here is the relevant code: playLink = $('<div id="lbPlayLink" />').click(function(){ $(playLink).hide(); $(pauseLink).show(); slideInterval = setInterval(function(){next()}, 3000) })[0]; pauseLink = $('<div id="lbPauseLink" />').click(function(){ $(playLink).show(); $(pauseLink).hide(); clearInterval(slideInterval); }).hide()[0]; The next() function call does the work of replacing the slide with the next one. I have checked out this function and it works perfectly if I call it directly (synchronously), however, when it gets called asonchronously by the "setInterval", it works fine the first time (3 seconds after I click on the button), but is never called again, even though it should be called 3 seconds later. I know it's never called as I put an "alert" call at the beginning and end of the function. If I replace the "next()" call in the "setInterval" by "alert('test')" then I can see the setInterval is doing what it is supposed to. I can't for the life of me see why "alert()" is OK but "next()" isn't, unless it has something to do with "scope" of functions, but in that case why does it work the first time? I've tried debugging the code with firebug, but it can't really help with timeout functions like this. Neither Firefox nor IE8 show any error messages. I've looked through the various posts here and elsewhere on setInterval, but can't see anything relevant that I haven't tried already. I've been experimenting now for about 3 hours and it's doing my head in. Can anyone suggest what I can try next? Thanks in advance Neil

• How to detect if an application has UI elements in it from C# in Windows 7?

  I have a c# application in Windows 7 that runs in Session 0. This application is basically a framework for software patches installation that will install patches in the background (in session 0). So this app will download patches from the server and start installing them on the client machines. The way it installs the patches is by calling CreateProcess("Patch.exe"). Now mostly, Patch.exe will be a non-ui silent installation and henceforth, installing the patch from session 0 goes through successfully. However, sometimes this Patch.exe happens to have some UI elements in it such as prompting the user for some details (like installation location, etc..) and let us say that these UI elements cannot be avoided. So is it possible for my installation framework (that runs in Session 0 written in C#), to know that the process Patch.exe which was created by my framework has any UI elements in it? The reason I ask is, if I determine that the application has any UI elements in it, then I do not want to continue with the installation (a crude way of doing this would be to kill the installer process Patch.exe, but that is a different story and not of concern here).

• Is there a tag in XHTML that you can put anywhere in the body - even inside TABLE elements?

  I would like to be able to place an empty tag anywhere in my document as a marker that can be addressed by jQuery. However, it is important that the XHTML still validates. To give you a bit of background as to what I'm doing: I've compared the current and previous versions of a particular document and I'm placing markers in the html where the differences are. I'm then intending to use jQuery to highlight the parent block-level elements when highlightchanges=true is in the URL's query string. At the moment I'm using <span> tags but it occurred to me that this sort of thing wouldn't validate: <table> <tr> <td>Old row</td> </tr> <span class="diff"></span><tr> <td>Just added</td> </tr> </table> So is there a tag I can use anywhere? Meta tag maybe? Thanks for your help! Iain

• WPF Grid Column MaxWidth not enforced

  This problem stems from not being able to get my TextBlock to wrap. Basically as a last-ditch attempt I am setting MaxWidth on my container grid's columns. I was surprised to find that my child label and textbox still do whatever they want (bad children, BAD) and are not limited by my grid column's MaxWidth="200". What I'm really trying to do is let my TextBlock fill available width and wrap if necessary. So far after trying many variations of HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" on every known parent in the universe, nothing works, except setting an explicit MaxWidth="400" or whatever number on the TextBlock. This is not good because I need the TextBlock to fill available width, not be limited by some fixed number.
