• Need example of how to create/manipulate image pixel data with iPhone SDK

  Looking for a simple example or link to a tutorial. Say I have a bunch of values stored in an array. I would like to create an image and update the image data from my array. Assume the array values are intensity data and will be updating a grayscale image. Assume the array values are between 0 and 255 -- or that I will convert it to that range. This is not for purposes of animation. Rather the image would be updated based on user interaction. This is something I know how to do well in Java, but am very new to iPhone programming. I've googled some information about CGImage and UIImage -- but am confused as to where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to By Pass Request Validation

  Hi, I have a GridView and I need update some data inserting HTML CODE; I would need this data been stored encoded and decoded on request. I cannot in any way disable globally "Request Validation" and not even at Page Level, so I would need a solution to disable "Request Validation" at Control Level. At the moment I am using a script which should Html.Encode every value being update, butt seems that "Request Validation" start its job before event RowUpdating, so I get the Error "Page A potentially dangerous Request.Form ... ". Any idea how to solve it? • Bind a WPF combobox and get selecteditem to a richtextbox

  Hi, I am using a dataset on the server, in this dataset I have a datatable that calls a stored procedure and returns column names from three tables. I call this stored procedure using a web service. I manage to show all the column names in my combobox but when I want to click a button and insert selected column name into a richtextbox I get System.Data.DataRowView in the textbox instead. • MVVM where does the code to load the data belong?

  As I wrap my head around the mvvm thing, the view is the view, and the viewmodel is 'a modal of a view' and the model are the entities we are dealing with (or at least that is my understanding). But I'm unclear as to what and when the model entities are populated. So for example: Lets say I have app that needs to create a new record in a DB. And that record should have default values to start with. Who is responsible for the new record, and getting the default values. Does this have anything to do with MVVM or is that part of a data access layer? Who calls the the viewmodel? Or for existing records when\where are the records retrieved? And saved if altered?   How can I interact with objects I've created based on their given attributes in Ruby? To give some context, I'm parsing a text file that might have several hundred entries like the following: ASIN: B00137RNIQ -------------------------Status Info------------------------- Upload created: 2010-04-09 09:33:45 Upload state: Imported Upload state id: 3 I can parse the above with regular expressions and use the data to create new objects in a "Product" class: class Product attr_reader :asin, :creation_date, :upload_state, :upload_state_id def initialize(asin, creation_date, upload_state, upload_state_id) @asin = asin @creation_date = creation_date @upload_state = upload_state @upload_state_id = upload_state_id end end After parsing, the raw text from above will be stored in an object that look like this: [#<Product:0x00000101006ef8 @asin="B00137RNIQ", @creation_date="2010-04-09 09:33:45 ", @upload_state="Imported ", @upload_state_id="3">] How can I then interact with the newly created class objects? For example, how might I pull all the creation dates for objects with an upload_state_id of 3? I get the feeling I'm going to have to write class methods, but I'm a bit stuck on where to start.

• Routing WCF Traffic Based on URI Domain Requested

  Is there a way to route traffic to a target WCF service file based on the URL domain requested? Basically, I have a single WCF RESTful services project with 3 service files offering different endpoints. It's hosted on a single IIS6 site looking for multiple host header values on port 80. I want to route traffic to different services files whether the requester is asking for www.site1.com, www.site2.com, or www.site3.com. Seems like the sort of thing I would use a global.asax or HTTP Handler for, but I am not sure since this is a regular WCF Service Application. Even though I am on IIS6 for this project, I don't mind using a URL re-writer and wildcard mapping, if I have to. I have admin rights on the balanced servers where this will reside, I just want to know if there is a common/best practice before I start hacking my way around this.

• Loading a datagrid with large amounts of data in silverlight?

  Hi I am breaking up my project in small sections and one of the sections involves loading a grid with possibily lots of records (could be up to 1000s of records in the database). Ideally I would like some sort of mechanism where as the users scrolls the grid, more data is retrieved. I have read that certain controls (datapager with RIA) do this but I would like to know how I could implement this myself or do something similiar? I was thinking about first loading 50 records at a time and when the user gets to scroll near the 50th record, then get another 50 as a start and so on. Not sure how I do this but this does not feel right or whether I should load ids of records in the grid and then get each row to load itself via an async thread but then I am hitting my database for each record? • Oracle (PL/SQL): Is UPDATE RETURNING concurrent?

  I'm using table with a counter to ensure unique id's on a child element. I know it is usually better to use a sequence, but I can't use it because I have a lot of counters (a customer can create a couple of buckets and each of them needs to have their own counter, they have to start with 1 (it's a requirement, my customer needs "human readable" keys). I'm creating records (let's call them items) that have a prikey (bucket_id, num = counter). I need to guarantee that the bucket_id / num combination is unique (so using a sequence as prikey won't fix my problem). The creation of rows doesn't happen in pl/sql, so I need to claim the number (btw: it's not against the requirements to have gaps). My solution was: UPDATE bucket SET counter = counter + 1 WHERE id = param_id RETURNING counter INTO num_forprikey; PL/SQL returns var_num_forprikey so the item record can be created. Question: Will I always get unique num_forprikey even if the user concurrently asks for new items in a bucket?

• SSIS Custom Control Task Debugging UI in BIDS and VS

  I've created a SSIS Custom Task in C# and I'm currently developing the UI. I was wondering if there is a better way of debugging the UI instead of compiling the project, copying the DLL's into the appropriate DTS folder and then opening the test Package within BIDS and then attaching the process to Visual Studio. This part I'm not bothered about but once you've tested the UI and made changes to UI within Visual Studio. I've got to recomplile the DLL's and then repeat the entire process. I've got to close BIDS and VS because they don't release the DLL's before I have to start the entire process over again. Does anyone have any tips to speed up this process. It's just so frustrating having to do this everytime.

• How do I enable automatic reloading of view files in development mode in JRuby on Rails?

  I am developing an app in JRuby on Rails. For some reason, when I edit the view files, the development JRuby Mongrel server doesn't reload them. The perplexing thing is that after editing the controller files, the server reloads them just fine on the next request. This would be annoying even when using MRI Ruby, however starting up JRuby Mongrel after every view edit is much slower, and much more annoying. (Note that once it starts up it's quite fast, the only issue is startup--the JVM has to load up every time I start JRuby Mongrel.) I'm running JRuby 1.5.0, Rails 2.3.5, and Java 6.

• Create Access databases programatically through vb.net

  Let me preface this by saying that I know this is a stupid way to go about this, but it needs to be handled in this way. I need to make an application that from a master database creates a number of access database files (tables of a larger db), then these are manually given to users who fill in data, the database files are emailed back to a user who, through the application, combines them again. The only part of this that I am unsure about is problematically creating the access db's. I have read that through Microsoft Jet OLE DB Provider and Microsoft ADO Ext I can create them (the tables and data), but I also need forms. I have yet to start writing anything and this is away from my area of work, so any insight/links would be much appreciated. Also, I would hope to be able to write this in the free express version of visual studio. Are there components needed that would prevent me from this? Thanks.

• SOAP - What's the point?

  I mean, really, what is the point of SOAP? Web services have been around for a while, and for a while it seemed that the terms 'SOAP' and 'Web service' were largely interchangeable. However SOAP always seemed unwieldy and massively overcomplicated to me. Then REST came along, and suddenly web services made sense. As Joel Spolsky says, give a programmer a REST URL, and they can start playing with the service right away, figuring it out. SOAP is obfuscated behind WSDLs and massively verbose XML, and despite being web based, you can't do anything as simple as access a SOAP service with a web browser. So the essence of my question is: Are there any good reasons to ever choose SOAP over REST? Are you working with SOAP now? Would it be better if the interface was REST? Am I wrong?

• Calculating intraday candlesticks by time intervals

  This maybe an over asked question, but my mind draws blank at this moment. I know what a candlestick chart is and how to draw it daily. But how to draw it intraday at asked time periods. I have this server, written in Java, that gives me trade depth (each trade done since the start of the day). Its just a stream of raw data: price, shares, timestamp. How does one go about calculating candlestick data from that? Lets say, they want to have 5 min candlestick or 1min candlestick. Or is there a library that will do that for me if I feed it data? Any help is appreciated!

  Hi! I've written two programs: the first, the "writer", creates a FIFO and writes data into it. The second one, the "reader" runs in background and looks for data in the FIFO. Once data is there, the reader reads it out. If I start e.g. two writers and two readers, they all can write/read into/from the same FIFO. How can I restrict it for 3rd and 4th readers/writers to use the FIFO and allow only one writer and one reader to use the FIFO? thanks a lot. -- kind regards, Max Krug

• Visual Studio 2008 profiler analysis - missing time

  I ran the Visual Studio 2008 profiler against my ASP.NET application and came up with the following result set. CURRENT FUNCTION TIME (msec) ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Data.GetItem(params) | 10,158.12 ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Functions that were called by Data.GetItem(params) TIME (msec) ---------------------------------------------------|-------------- Model.GetSubItem(params) | 0.83 Model.GetSubItem2(params) | 0.77 Model.GetSubItem3(params) | 0.76 etc. The issue I'm facing is that the sum of the Functions called by Data.GetItem(params) do not sum up to the 10,158.12 msec total. This would lead me to believe that the bulk of the time is actually spent executing the code within that method. My question is ... does Visual Studio provide a way to analyze the method itself so I can see which sections of code are taking the longest? if it does not are there any recommended tools to do this? or should I start writing my own timing scripts? Thank you

  AFAIK JSR-303 is the standard bean validation system. I don't know whether it could do validations like this (I guess no): if an object has a deleted flag set, you cannot modify the object you cannot change the start date property, after the date is passed you cannot decrease some integer properties in the bean So how can I handle validations, which depend on the previous state of an object? I would like to solve problems like that in hibernate3.5 - spring3 - JPA2 environment. Thanks My solution was to mess with hibernate, reload the object to see the old state (after evicting the new object). This time I need some smarter solution...

• Huh? Android Preferences page refuses to load after adding SDK 1.6

  This one is really weird. I had a perfectly working Eclipse + Android 2.2 SDK working in both Administrator account and LUA (Limited User Account) under Windows XP. Then I decided to add the Android 1.6 SDK (I could do it from an Administrator account only). It seemed to have gone well, since it still works perfectly -- but only in that Administrator account! When I try to start Eclipse under a LUA, I receive the following error message box: Which disappears within 2-3 seconds and replaced with: I then tried to check the Preferences page, but again, all I receive is error messages: and: Any idea why this is happening and how to fix this? (I would love to be able to continue working from a LUA)

  I have two threads in python (2.7). I start them at the beginning of my program. While they execute, my program reaches the end and exits, killing both of my threads before waiting for resolution. • How to specify a JRE range in jnlp file?

  We have a java app which uses Java Web Start. The jnlp file is configured with [j2se version="1.5+"]. So if JRE 1.5 and 1.6 are installed, the app is run on 1.6. Now, we have requirement where the app should be restricted to run only within the range - JRE 1.5.0_07 through JRE 1.5.0_17 [j2se version="1.5*"] will not work - it will always launch the app with the latest jre from 1.5 family. I can request an exact product version by including the href attribute. [j2se version="1.5.0_14" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/] But how do I specify a specific range of JREs in the jnlp file so that JWS picks up a JRE from that range only? So if 1.5.0_07, 1.5.0_17 and JRE 6 are installed, it should run the app on 1.5.0_17. Is there a good way to accomplish this?

• Is problem solving of puzzles/logic tests a skill that can be developed with practise or only someth

  Programming is essentially problem solving/using a lot of logic. With solving puzzles (like the ones recruiters like MS etc ask), is this a skill that can be developed with practise or is it a skill that only someone who is gifted has (I assume the former as many people can pass these tests)? Even so, I keep thinking it is a special skill for someone gifted, not for someone with a lot of practise. I guess that with practise you are perhaps more open-minded and start to think out of the box more (solving technical problems in development may also foster this mindset perhaps). Thanks

• Is it possible to give a python dict an initial capacity (and is it usefull)

  I am filling a python dict with around 10,000,000 items. My understanding of dict (or hashtables) is that when too much elements get in them, the need to resize, an operation that cost quite some time. Is there a way to say to a python dict that you will be storing at least n items in it, so that it can allocate memory from the start? Or will this optimization not do any good to my running speed? (And no, I have not checked that the slowness of my small script is because of this, I actually wouldn't now how to do that. This is however something I would do in Java, set the initial capacity of the HashSet right)

• Connection Timeout Extension/Detection

  Well, let me start off by explaining what I'm trying to do. I have an application that stalls a HTTP connection until new data is available (sometimes a few seconds, sometimes 30 minutes or so). Right now, the system works fine if the data is sent within a few minutes. The problem I'm facing, is that it doesn't seem that XHR recognizes a dropped connection... So instead of killing the current connection and reconnecting when it detects a dropped connection, it just sits there. I'd really not like to have it force-reconnect every minute or two (That's one reason this app was written, to stop the need for polling). So, my questions are as follows: Is there a way to detect a dropped (not closed) TCP connection with XHR? Is there a way that I can tell XHR not to timeout (I saw IE8 has the .timeout property) Would it be better to send a header (or some other content) every now and then (say once per minute) down the pipe to keep the connection open?
