• How would you diagnose an integrated network card that doesn't show up on the device list?

  I've been setting up a server based around a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (G33, PCH9R with integrated Realtek 811B network device. I've enabled it in the BIOS, but it doesn't show up in the pre-boot PCI device list, isn't recognized by Windows (even after installing the chipset and networking drivers) and doesn't even show up via lspci. I've tried cycling power, disabling, cycling again, enabling, cycling again etc. to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss at this point; the board isn't under warranty anymore, but I'd rather not have to replace it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

  I developed a intranet applications with Rails (3.2) for one of my customers. There will be around 30-40 employees working with it. Backend is MySQL (5). What would be the best way to determine the servers specs needed? Given: max. load will be roughly 2400 (40*60) HTTP requests (mixed GET / POST) per hour. 15% of these calls are JSON calls (iOS) avg request will make between 5-10 database calls 500-800 SQL INSERTS per day webpages are fairly simple (no images, just text) avg webpage is 15 request (css/js/etc) and total size is 35-45 KB More specific, since they need access from multiple geographical locations, we are thinking of running a bitnami Ruby stack in the AWS cloud (uptime is important). Any thoughts on a AWS Instance (small/medium) and Utilization (light/medium/heavy) ? Thanks!

This system will be dedicated to running multiple virtual machines under VMware Workstation (Note: I'm not using ESXi because I do plan to use the system for other purposes.). For the host OS, I plan to install RHEL 5. My number one concern is guest performance. For example, should I create a RAID 10 array for the OS and virtual machine storage with four of the drives and reserve the 5th? Or, is there a solution that will provide better performance?

• What is the difference between these Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs?

  The CPU in question is the Pentium Extreme Edition 955. Intel's website shows four "versions", but for the most part they all look identical. They even share the same set of ordering codes. But one of them has a substantially lower TDP, which is seemingly unexplainable - since everything else is the same. Two of them say "LGA775, Tray" and I have no idea what "Tray" means either. Also, two of them have a different SPEC code. What I need to know is: What does "LGA775, Tray" mean? Why does the one CPU have a lower TDP? And what does that mean for me? Does that mean lower maximum power consumption? Does it mean the CPU may be more stable/endurant, because of a lower heat output? Why do two of them have a different SPEC code, and what does this mean? Finally, what does PLGA775 (as opposed to LGA775) mean, and do I need to be worried about that?   I was in my BIOS setup turning on VT-x support today and saw these other settings. A little googling indicates that they each seem to turn on some sort of optimization to do with the CPU's L2 cache. They were all turned off by default. The processor in question is an Intel Xeon quad-core 3.4GHz (X5492). My OS is Linux 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 23 16:04:50 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have 4GB of RAM if that matters. Here's what the BIOS manufacturer has to say: Snoop Filter Enabling the snoop filter typically improves performance by reducing snoop traffic on the frontside bus in dual processor configurations. Well I like the sound of improved performance. Why would the BIOS have this off by default? Or by dual processor do they not mean multi-core? Regardless, is there a downside if this is on? ACL Prefetch When enabled, the Adjacent Cache Line Prefetcher fetches both cache lines that comprise a cache line pair when it determines required data is not currently in its cache. When disabled, the processor will only fetch the cache line required by the processor. HW Prefetch Fetches an extra line of data into L2 from external memory. Both of these sound like optimizations that have some drawbacks. What are the reasons to turn them on? What are the reasons to leave them off. Why is the default off?

• 3 wire computer fan won't run continuously

  I had an old computer that didn't work anymore, so I took the CPU fan out to see what I could make with it. The fan is NMB model number BG0903-B044-VTL, like this. It has three wires coming off of it, red, black, and white. I know that the white wire is usually a speed sensor. Does this wire need to be connected to something in order for the fan to run continuously? Right now when I apply power to the red and black wires (from a 9-volt battery) the fan will spin very briefly, and then slow down until it stops. The fan's motor only spins in the instant that the power is turned on, but doesn't continue, even though the power is still applied. How can I get the fan to spin continuously?

  So I recently made some purchases for a new computer including: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R CPU : Intel Core2Quad 2.66Ghz Power Supply: Antec Basiq 500w UPDATE: I got the Power Supply working, the motherboard's lights come on, the video card fan spins, BUT the CPU fan does NOT spin and there is no video. Whats the possibility of lacking power? In the mobo guide it says the use of a power supply providing a 2x4 12V connector is recommended (I do not have this connector) by the CPU manufacturer when using an Intel Extreme Edition (I'm using Core2Quad) UPDATE: Got it working, intstalling windows 7 now. • FreeBSD after motherboard replacement; should I have any concerns?

  So after three years my motherboard (Asus M2N-0MX) has died off. As I go shopping for i's replacement tomorrow I have a concern about the data that I currently have on the drives wtihin. • Cannot increase my screen resolution

  I am trying to install my new monitor but my Graphics Adapter (Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family) does not offer a resolution of 1920x1080 in the [Display Properties Settings] window. It only offers up to 1360x768. Can anyone explain to me how I can increase this number to the correct resolution. The monitor does show my the windows desktop, albeit at a lower resolution which is being stretched to fill the screen, making it look very blurry. I have installed the "Monitor Drivers" I found on the disk supplied with new monitor, but these do not appear to have made any difference. The Intel software that comes with the graphics card has an information window containing lots of info about the card and the monitor itself. I have placed this on a webpage so you can examine it if helpful. Many thanks with your help in getting my Christmas present to work! Patrick P.S.: Before I got this screen I checked to see if my graphics card could cope with such a large screen.

• Is it possible to dedicate the physical screen of a vmware server machine to a guest vm graphically?
