  • can lapply not modify variables in a higher scope

    I often want to do essentially the following: mat <- matrix(0,nrow=10,ncol=1) lapply(1:10, function(i) { mat[i,] <- rnorm(1,mean=i)}) But, I would expect that mat would have 10 random numbers in it, but rather it has 0. (I am not worried about the rnorm part. Clearly there is a right way to do that. I am worry about affecting mat from within an anonymous function of lapply) Can I not affect matrix mat from inside lapply? Why not? Is there a scoping rule of R that is blocking this?

  • iPhone slide view passing variables

    Right, I'm trying to make an app that has a calculation that involves a stopwatch. When a button on the calculation view is clicked a stopwatch slides in from the bottom. This all works fine, the problem I can't get my head around is how to send the recorded time back to the previous controller to update a textfield.     I'm thinking there's something basic stuff I'm missing here; for (var i=1; i<=5; i++) { var o = $('#asd'+i); o.mouseover(function() { console.info(i); }); } When hovering over the five different elements, I always get out the last value from iteration; the value 5. What I want is different values depending of which element I'm hovering, all from 1 to 5. What am I doing wrong here?

If I handle it like following, my program crashes: void FakeRunner::procError(QProcess::ProcessError rc) { delete proc; proc = 0; } It works well, though, if I don't delete the pointer. So, the question is how (and when) should I delete the pointer to QProcess? I believe I have to delete it to avoid a memory leak. FakeRunner::run() can be invoked many times, so the leak, if there is one, will grow. Thanks!

    Hello I have a user model and a ratings model. Whenever a new user is created I want to create a new feedback model with it automatically. Each user model has one feedback model and each feedback model has many ratings. My Classes class User < ActiveRecord::Base end class Feedback < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :ratings end class Rating < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :feedback end My database tables -user doesn't have anything special -feedback has user_id. This user_id should be the same as the user that has just been created. For example, user_id of 1 is created, then a feedback model should be created that belongs to user_id of 1. So the user_id column in the feedback database will also be 1. - Rating has a feedback_id and a user_id the user_id in this case is the id of the person who submitted the rating. I am having it assigned through the build command. I believe my process is correct here. The Goal The goal is to have each user have a feedback table that has many ratings from other users. So if someone goes to the feedback page, they will see all the ratings given and by who. Is there a better way to approach this? How do you create a model of feedback with the same id as the user being created right when a new user is created. The idea is that when a user is created a feedback is created associated with that user so people can then go to http://localhost:3000/users/1/feedback/ and submit new ratings. I'm trying to bypass having a user rate another user with just a ratings model because I'm not sure how to do it.

  • pthread condition variables on Linux, odd behaviour.

    Hi. I'm synchronizing reader and writer processes on Linux. I have 0 or more process (the readers) that need to sleep until they are woken up, read a resource, go back to sleep and so on. Please note I don't know how many reader processes are up at any moment. I have one process (the writer) that writes on a resource, wakes up the readers and does its business until another resource is ready (in detail, I developed a no starve reader-writers solution, but that's not important). To implement the sleep / wake up mechanism I use a Posix condition value, pthread_cond_t. The clients call a pthread_cond_wait() on the variable to sleep, while the server does a pthread_cond_broadcast() to wake them all up. As the manual says, I surround these two calls with a lock/unlock of the associated pthread mutex. The condition variable and the mutex are initialized in the server and shared between processes through a shared memory area (because I'm not working with threads, but with separate processes) an I'm sure my kernel / syscall support it (because I checked _POSIX_THREAD_PROCESS_SHARED). What happens is that the first client process sleeps and wakes up perfectly. When I start the second process, it blocks on its pthread_cond_wait() and never wakes up, even if I'm sure (by the logs) that pthread_cond_broadcast() is called. If I kill the first process, and launch another one, it works perfectly. In other words, the condition variable pthread_cond_broadcast() seems to wake up only one process a time. If more than one process wait on the very same shared condition variable, only the first one manages to wake up correctly, while the others just seem to ignore the broadcast. Why this behaviour? If I send a pthread_cond_broadcast(), every waiting process should wake up, not just one (and, however, not always the same one).

    I have an object (a UIViewController) which may or may not conform to a protocol I've defined. I know I can determine if the object conforms to the protocol, then safely call the method: if([self.myViewController conformsToProtocol:@protocol(MyProtocol)]) { [self.myViewController protocolMethod]; // <-- warning here } However, XCode shows a warning: warning 'UIViewController' may not respond to '-protocolMethod' What's the right way to prevent this warning? I can't seem to cast self.myViewController as a MyProtocol class. Update Andy's answer below is close, but includes an unneccesary '*'.     I am trying to figure out how to find the last entry of a string in multiple config files across a server. Each of the strings will be in the /home/***usernamewouldbehere/public_html/typo3conf/localconf.php file In short - the last entry in the config files will point to the database server the application is utilizing - and we need to know which accounts point to which db server. While I can run something like this - grep "$_db_host" /home/*/public_html/conf/localconf.php It does not really help much because it gives us way to much information ... and not what we really need. What i really need to know is the last entry of this string $_db_host = 'xx'; and to sort them out in an export file Since the config files may have multiple entries (example below) $_db_host = 'localhost'; $_db_host = '10.0.1.234'; It would be great to list in a file all of those that have the entry for 'localhost' and then list all of those that have the entry for '10.0.1.234' (or whichever server there may be there) but even if I need to do that manually that would be great. I am not sure how to get to it using Awk - ... and really stuck What I am hoping for is something that would be piped as follows db_host = localhost /home/username1/www/conf/localconf.php db_host = localhost / home/username2/public_html/conf/localconf.php db_host= '10.1.2.23' /home/username55/public_html/conf/localconf.php hoping that helps you help me :-)

    I did a couple google searches about this and am not finding anything, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm working on our internal CMS and I noticed that we're getting live data back when doing debugging because of our web services instead of the dev data that I wanted. It doesn't do this on our dev CMS website, but we're trying to do all our development on localhost. Is there any way to set up an environment variable in our web config for the URL so that the CMS points to the dev database instead of live database that is referenced in the wsdl files?

    Hi guys, I just wanted to know what happens behind my program when I declare and initialize a variable and later initialize it again with other values, e.g. an ArrayList or something similar. What happens in my RAM, when I say e.g. this: ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); ...add values, work with it and so on.... al = new ArrayList<String>(); So is my first ArrayList held in RAM or will the second ArrayList be stored on the same position where the first one has been before? Or will it just change the reference of "al"? If it is not replaced...is there a way to manually free the RAM which was occupied by the first arraylist? (without waiting for the garbage collector) Would it help to set it first =null? Nice greetings, poeschlorn

    I'm working with some third-party software that creates querystring parameters with hyphens in their names. I was taking a look at this SO question and it seems like their solution is very close to what I need but I'm too ignorant to the underlying MVC stuff to figure out how to adapt this to do what I need. Ideally, I'd like to simply replace hyphens with underscores and that would be a good enough solution. If there's a better one, then I'm interested in hearing it. An example of a URL I want to handle is this: http://localhost/app/Person/List?First-Name=Bob with this Controller: public ActionResult List(string First_Name) { {...} } To repeat, I cannot change the querystring being generated so I need to support it with my controller somehow. But how?     It appears to me that it matters whether you use a variable to temporary store an IQueryable or not. See the simplified example below: This works: List<string> jobNames = new List<string> { "ICT" }; var ictPeops = from p in dataContext.Persons where ( from j in dataContext.Jobs where jobNames.Contains(j.Name) select j.ID).Contains(p.JobID) select p; But when I use a variable to temporary store the subquery I get an exception: List<string> jobNames = new List<string> { "ICT" }; var jobs = from j in dataContext.Jobs where jobNames.Contains(j.Name) select j.ID; var ictPeops = from p in dataContext.Persons where jobs.Contains(p.JobID) select p; "System.NotSupportedException: Queries with local collections are not supported" I don't see what the problem is. Isn't this logic that is supposed to work in LINQ?
