• AMD chipset VS SLi

  Hello, I currently own a Crosshair 2 Formula which is broken and I need to replace. Recently, I bought a Phenom 2 CPU which I wouldn't like to throw away. Recent Crosshairs are based (as opposed to the Rampage series) on chipsets that are certified for AMD Crossfire. The problem is that I have 3 SLi cards I absolutely don't want to change with AMD card(s) since I use 3D Vision, and I need NVidia. If I buy a Crosshair 3 or 4 which is not SLi certified, will SLi still work? Else, could you suggest me a good gaming motherboard with AM3 socket and that works with 3-way SLi? Thank you in advance. • Open Port on Windows Server 2008

  I have an external server and I installed a new Service on it. The service is running and I can access it locally. When I tried to get access to it locally, all worked just fine. but when I try to reach it from my laptop over the internet, I get the message, that the port is blocked. I added a rule to the windows firewall that all connections to that port are allowed but it still doesnt work. there is so many things in google that didnt help me, thats why I am asking specifically. I do acutally not know how to google for that right because i am not that into server configs and so on. Can anybody help me, what I have to do, to be able to access that port? From outside.

  Before asking question let me tell you some assumptions here there are 5 files on my webserver index.php config.php read.php write.php .htaccess I've wrote following URL rewriting rule in .htaccess RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^(\w+)$ read.php?id=$1 Now when I type domain.com/xyz it fetch data from read.php?id=xyz thats nice :) But when I type domain.com/index it fetch data from index.php or when i type domain.com/write or domain.com/config or domain.com/read it fetch data from write.php , config.php and read.php respectively I want data to be fectched from read.php?id=index or read.php?id=config or read.php?id=read or read.php?id=write Any one can help me regarding this ? • SharePoint 2010 Licensing Costs

  We will be implementing a public-facing website in SharePoint 2010 and I have a few questions regarding licensing: Is there any (relatively) reliable pricing information available for SharePoint 2010? What about rumors? What edition of SharePoint 2010 would be appropriate for a publicly facing website (in 2007, you needed Enterprise for this, but it seems that WCM functionality is included in Standard in 2010)? What would be a reasonable number to budget for SharePoint 2010 licensing for a publicly facing website? Note: I have tried asking Microsoft directly. Unless you are a volume license customer, they direct you to a reseller (like CDW). Unfortunately, none of the resellers have the pricing for 2010 yet. The sku isn't even in their system. I was able to get in touch with the Microsoft Pre-Sales team and they confirmed that the price list will for 2010 will be published on May 3rd (or thereabouts), but they weren't able to give me a price. • Strange problem with Exchange client connection

  I've got a strange problem with an Exchange 2007 server running on SBS 2008. It's been working fine for users for the last 5 months, then 5 days ago they started getting a problem where Outlook would popup a window asking for credentials. If the user enters there credentials it pops up again and again, however if the user cancels the box it goes away and outlook continues to work fine. These clients all connect using Outlook Anywhere, and OWA access is also working fine. I had thought this message box may have been to do with other POP or IMAP accounts being configured in Outlook, but it's not the case. I have re-configured Outlook Anywhere on the server but to no avail. Using the RPC diagnostic tool in Outlook shows no problems. There are no errors showing in the event log. The server seems to be running fine, so to me this seems like either a client, or an RPC over HTTP issue, but I'm not getting anywhere finding the cause, any help is appreciated!

• How do I set up DNS for an intranet web site?

  I have a web site running on our local server, 'OBAMA'. In my hosts file on that server, I map engenxt.local to 127.0.0.1, so typing engenxt.local on that machine itself brings up the website. I would like other machines to access the site via domain name 'engenxt'. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server, where would I begin, where should I go, and where should I end? I know precious little about DNS, or rather precious nothing, but am a quick study, besides, that is why I'm asking how to do this here. Episode 2 When I run DNS as Ryan suggests, it says 'the server OBAMA is unavailable. Do I want to add it?' It adds it, and tells me to choose to 'Configure a DNS server' from the actions menu, but nearly all the actions in that menu are disabled.

• Mac friendly file sharing from VirtualBox

  I have set up Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu into a VirtualBox instance on my PC, I enabled Samba and I'm connecting to it via the home network from my Mac. All is fine except that I have some issues deleting some files from inside applications e.g. in Sublime Text 2 when I right click a file in the browser and select delete nothing happens (same in my Git client). To be able to delete files I have to navigate to the folder in Finder (which leaves those nasty .DS_Store files scattered all around) or issue the delete command from the terminal (inconvenient). If you're asking why I'm using VirtualBox for Rails instead of doing the development directly on the Mac it's because the ease of portability. So my question is: are there any network sharing options which I could use to make the Linux instance play nicer with my Mac?

• Proper 16:9 video size for non-HD 4:3 video (for youtube/vimeo)

  Since High Definition video came out on all the online sites it has changed the default aspect ratio of the player from 4:3 to 16:9. This means that for people posting SD video you have to resize some of your videos to get them to fit right. For example, NTSC DVD quality (aka 480i/p) is 720x480 pixels (width x height). However, low-end High Definition (720i/p) is 1280x720. Anyway, now that the video players are built for HD you will find that uploading standard quality videos will result in videos that are "letter boxed" which means they have extra black bars on the top and bottom (or sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to get a 720x480 video to fit a box that is designed for HD the best practice would be to crop some of it off so that it fits as 720x404 since: 16/9 = 1.78 (1.7777777777778) 720/405 = 1.78 405x1.78 = 720.9 The same would stand for 640x480 (old TV quality) video that would need to be 640x360 correct? I'm asking because I'm not sure about all this and whether this is the proper way to fix these letter-boxing/display problems.

• Backup to disk, encrypted, without any installed local software

  Hi, Ok, this is a tough one, and it might not even be possible, but no harm in asking I guess. I have a Buffalo Terastation file server that I use for network attached storage. After a couple of phone calls to customer services I realised that there is no way to backup to disk encrypted. In effect, I would be carrying unencrypted company data off-site daily, which is obviously unacceptable. I had a go at TrueCrypt, EncFS, and a few others, and as far as I could see all of them required that you install some software on the machine that is to use the file system, which makes sense. Unfortunately the firmware on the Terastation is closed and I cannot install any software (and I can't build from source either, since Buffalo didn't include a compiler). Are there any ways to copy files to disk, where as soon as they are written to the disk they are transparently encrypted, without having to install additional software? I'm not sure it matters too much, but the Terastation firmware is Linux based, although as I mentioned, closed. Many thanks, Andreas

  I have recently managed to get my employer to pay for a vps. I teach and asked the vps provider to enable Perl, Python, Ruby, Tomcat and Java. They've done the first four (really quickly) but have got back to me asking which parts of Java I need. I think the Java Virtual Machine is a given but what other S/W do I need to get installed? I think by getting the vps I now have the chance to teach Enterprise Java and want to get into Java Message Server and Enterprise patterns. Can I get Glassfish installed or is that a silly question? • Ghost Image - windows asks for activation on when deployed to VM

  I have several images created with Ghost Solution Suite (v11 I believe), the images have been in use for a few years now, but I am finally to the point where I have enough time to attempt to virtualize them for easier updates. I am running VMWare and attempting to image the virtual machines with my ghost image files. For my images I am running sysprep with minisetup and using reseal. The image deploys successfully, however when I start the VM for the first time, it demands windows activation. This doesn't happen when I image a physical computer, even a different model with different hardware. The idea of virtualizing my images becomes rather worthless if I am unable to deploy the images without having to activate every time (especially as Microsoft keeps declaring our volume licence key as invalid for activations). Does anyone know why it is asking for activation on a virtual machine, but not a physical PC? How can I prevent this?

  I need to make a change on all computers in our domain. Specifically I need to make a change to the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings. Our users have Outlook 2010 installed. These setting can be mannually accessed from: Control Panel - Mail - E-mail Accounts - (Select Account) - Change Account - More Settings - Connection Tab - Exchange Proxy Settings I need to have both the "On fast networks" and "On slow networks" check boxes selected. Obviously the idea of asking my users to go through the process above to make these changes is not ideal. Therefore I looking for advice on how I can automatically push these setting to my user base. I have seached the registry but I have been unable to find the location that this setting is saved. Thanks for any help!

• How do I uninstall Adobe Air?

  I stumbled upon Adobe Air in the Utilities folder of my Mac. I don't use Flash, and I am not aware of having installed any other programs which need Adobe Air. There were two files - An installer and uninstaller. Clicking on the uninstaller simply launched a window saying that Adobe Air is already installed on my system! It didn't give me any option to remove it. So I deleted both the files. A few minutes later, a window opened on its own, asking me if I wanted to update Adobe Air now, or later! How do I make sure this cheeky application has been removed completely?

  I'm a Linux guy when it comes to (web) servers for the following reasons Legally free Fast software updates (Unless you're running Cent OS :) Powerful CLI management of services Easy to secure (in terms of users and groups) Web server software is, well, built for Linux... Apache, PHP, Python, etc, are Linux programs that get ported to Windows - I'm 90% sure of this Unless the web server needed to run ASP, I wouldn't use Windows. My boss' IT friend is a Windows guy, though. He recently got a server setup in the office to run Microsoft Exchange and some other shit. What I'm asking is, if he wanted to start running websites on this thing, what would be good reasoning to convince him otherwise? He's not very bright in terms of IT and the IT friend is all Windows. So it's two against one here... What would you say to running a Windows web server?

• SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

  I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like this is possible in SQL 2000 or if I need to go in a completely different direction.

• Can SATA be used to connect computers?

  Can SATA be used to connect two computers together, just like a crossover Ethernet cable would do ? I know SATA has no "networking" features and even though a controller may have multiple ports, the drives don't "see" each other, and that in SATA one device acts as the host (the computer) and the other device is some kind of "client" (the storage drive). But still, did anyone attempt to make a kernel module that would make one computer appear as a "client" (so that the host's SATA controller detects it as a standard hard drive) and then set up like a pseudo-Ethernet link or a very high speed serial link (and then run pppd on it and do networking) ? Note : I know this is an unprofessional and totally stupid idea, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

• Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says Turn Off with Installing Updates (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") When I do a normal shutdown asking it to "Install Updates and Turn It Off", it doesn't actually install the updates. Each subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still prompts me to "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that the install was this: Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... When I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and install it, it tries to install but fails: Why is this install alone failing? Secondly, if it's not possible to ascertain why the installation is failing, can I at least ensure that it's removed from the list of possible installs so that each time it does not ask me to install it?

• Re-enabling audio on an iMac

  Hello guys, I know Super User is not a 'tech support' forum, so I will try to make it short: my computer's sound does not work anymore. I have asked for support on the Apple board but I feel a bit on my own. To summarize, the Sound Panel of my iMac does not display any outgoing channel (headphones or internal speakers). It does not work on Windows either. Contrary to what it may seem, I have the feeling that it is not a hardware issue (and that GarageBand is somehow interfering). If you have an idea to solve the problem, please share. Making it work again is a lost cause without sending it back to Apple, so the question I'm asking is: What is the best workaround (cheap Firewire sound card?) for getting my sound back? Thanks.

  So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu. • Apache vs Lighttpd: Weird behavior in reverse proxy mode.

  Context: I have an Apache server running in reverse proxy mode in front of a Tomcat java server. It handle HTTP and HTTPS and send those request back and forth to the Tomcat server on an internal HTTP port. Goal: I'm trying to replace the reverse proxy with Lighttpd. Problem: while asking for the same HTTPS url, while using Apache as the reverse proxy, the Tomcat server redirect (302) to an HTTPS page but with Lighttpd it redirect to the same page in HTTP (not HTTPS). Question: What does Lighttpd could do different in order to have a different result from the backend server? In theory, using Apache or Lighttpd server as a reverse proxy should not change anything... but it does. Any idea? I'll try to find something by sniffing the traffic on the backend tomcat server.

• At what point does Active Directory and Domain Services become necessary? [closed]

  I see time and time again such services running in a business environment with only 10 users. Everyone in the office authenticates with the DC and interacts with a shared drive where files and documents are stored. I can't help but think...reeeeealy? But I don't know, that's why I'm asking. To me it seems like you need to reach a certain threshold of size and needs before you throw a DC into the mix. ie: a 20+ user business (and growing) with permission requirements that separate the sales team from accounting. • Can a company use VPN to spy on me?

  I'm about to work with a company on a development project, but they first need to set up a pretty complicated environment, and suggested they use VPN to work on my machine to do this. Should I be concerned that somebody can just watch me work? It would be embarrassing, if somebody could witness my work habits (e.g. Asking questions on SO and researching all day is part of my daily work regiment, and makes me feel like a noob, but it keeps me sharp. I also listen to conspiracy videos all day, and RadioLab podcasts, :). Is VPN going to introduce this possibility, and if so, is there a way around it? EDIT: Also, is there a way I can always tell when somebody is VPNed into my computer?
