    hey, i got my development "home" server witch is ubuntu 10, i brought today a computer in order to make a backup to this computer (the development server does also to him self backups every day but im paranoaid so i want to have two backups just in case on diffrent computers) what is the best way to backup the system core of the development server (like norton ghost) & do a full & incrmnt backup of him to the new computer that ive brought? rsync? rdiff? scp? clonezilla?

    I am testing my noscript tags which display content when javascript is disabled, this works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Camino, IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, basically everything but Opera (I'm running version 11, not sure if its isolated to that version). In Opera 11 nothing is displayed... is the noscript tag not supported? and what is the alternative? I read of C++0x is gonna come out 2011 so its called C++11. When C++11 comes out, we will still be developing the software of the project.   • Websphere/Oracle 11 - much more Heap Usage than with Oracle 10

    Hi all, while testing our application with Oracle 11 (previously, we had Oracle 10), we saw that our server uses much more heap space. It seems as it has something to do with T4CConnection; there are 500 objects of T4CConnection allocated. Someone told me, that Oracle 11 is using SoftReferences to keep the connection pool; but we don't need that. Is that correct? Could that be the problem for the increased heap space? If yes - how can we avoid connection pooling? Thanks a lot!!

  • Why does the terminal in unity 2d (Ubuntu 11.10) always stay in the foreground?

    I have just updated to Ubuntu 11.10 and I am using unity 2d. My terminal applications (gnome-terminal or konsole) just won't go into background. When I move another application in front of them, they are still rendered, but the clicks are going through them. This behavior only appears when the terminal windows interact with another applications. I can move one terminal over another without a problem, but even the menu list of a terminal application can not be shown, since it is - for some unknown reason - "behind" the terminal. Any ideas what might be the cause of this problem? I do not have this problem with my other machines. The only difference is, that I am using unity 2d here and ("normal") unity at home.

    Hi All, I have a few external hard drives (SSDs and Platters (SATA), is this possible that I can install Kubuntu 10.10 x64 or Ubuntu 10.10 x64 onto one of these external hard drives? My System supports booting off a usb, it will just give me a learning playground without spoiling my existing operating environment. I know I can install as Virtual machines, but installing U/Kubuntu on a External HDD and booting off it would be easier. Will be grateful for your insights....and steps to do so. Thanks

So I saved a long note, but as my finger clicked two times on the save button, the second click was on the 'delete' one ! I am 100% sure I used the same email address and password. My password does not contain any non-ascii characters. Someone suggested to use an older version of the client.     I have to run clamav on large files. I was wondering which command was the fastest between clamscan and clamdscan. But it seems that clamdscan is not working properly: it scans file larger than 1 GB. Could you guys help me find why the heck clamdscan isn't working ? Between clamscan and clamdscan which one is less resource consuming ? I run ClamAV 0.97.8/18037 on Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS.   • PDF Converter wanted: Convert 8.5*11 PDF images into 600*800px PDF images for the Nook

    I have PDF files that are maritime charts, For example this one from the Delaware Bay http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/12304_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf There is a lot of detailed information in the image. When I show them on a monitor the details are shown. When I put them on the Nook they are sized to fit the Nook screen (about 3*5) and all the details are lost. Since the Nook pdf reader does not have a zoom feature, the charts are unreadable. I'd like to convert them to fit on the Nook screen(600*800px). This means the images would need to be sliced into multiple images. (ie a single image (page) would get split into 5 rows and 4 columns) In a perfect world they would get converted with a slight overlap, left to right, top to bottom. I could then page through the smaller slices to find the section I need. I had used PaperCrop in the past to convert two col PDF's (highly recommended) but it can't do anything with the images. ImageMagick does a lot with combining images, but I didn't see any split options to split the image into tiles. Windows program preferred. Thanks!

  • Sysprep and Capture task sequence failing using MDT 2010

    I have created a Windows Deployment Services server in Windows 2008 R2. When I originally set it up I was able to successfully use MDT 2010 to create my boot images as well as creating task sequences that would sysprep and capture, and deploy my custom .wim files. Everything was working perfectly. About a month later I boot up my Windows 7 x86 image and run Windows updates to keep my image up to date. I then go and run my sysprep and capture task sequence and I get the following errors: I searched online for the cause of this error message and it just seems to be a generic permission denied type of error message. I then decided to completely rebuild my VM image from scratch and try again. I am still getting the same error messages as before. The following is what I have tried troubleshooting this issue: Troubleshooting: I have ensured that that UAC and the firewall is turned completely off when trying to capture the image. I have tried recreating the task sequence and making sure that the deployment share is updated. I have ensured that the local Administrator account is enabled and has the same password as specified in the task sequence. I have tried joining the computer to the domain and running the task sequence and I get a different error: I have attempted to run the script from the command prompt with "Run as Administrator" and I still receive the same errors above. For testing purposes I have ensured that Everyone has read/write access to my deployment share. I have spent days on trying to resolve this to no avail. Any ideas?     Why sudo -i command is not setting the TERM, PATH, HOME, SHELL, LOGNAME, USER and USERNAME on my fresh Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS as decribed in the manual? # sudo -u johnny -i echo $HOME && echo $USER /root root Using -H is not setting $HOME either. And my user does exist with a home : # cat /etc/passwd [..] johnny:x:1000:1000::/home/johnny:/bin/bash Update : Why am I having this issue? Because I am trying to create an ubuntu upstart job for multiple unicorn applications & I am using user installation of RVM + Bundle : without $HOME being properly evaluated, RVM do not find ~/.rvm.

  • Add the 2D Version of the New Unity Interface to Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04

    Is your computer or virtualization software unable to display the new 3D version of the Unity Interface in Ubuntu? Now you can access and enjoy the 2D version with just a little PPA magic added to your system! To add the new PPA open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and click on the PPA listing for Unity 2D on the left (highlighted with red in the image). Scroll down until you find the listing for “Unity interface for non-accelerated graphics cards – unity-2d” and click Install. Once that is done you are ready to go to System, Administration, and then select Login Screen in your Ubuntu Menu. Unlock the screen and select Unity 2D as the default session from the drop-down list as shown here. Log out and then back in to start enjoying that Unity 2D goodness!   • AutoCAD 11 and network file shares

    Small network of perhaps half a dozen engineers, currently working on local copies of AutoCAD project files, which are then copied back up to file server (2008 Standard, 1-2 year old Dell server hardware, RAID 5 SAS disks (10k? not positive)) at end of day. To me, this sounds horribly inefficient and error-prone, however, I've been told that "AutoCAD and network files = bad idea" and this is gospel. The network is currently 10/100 (perhaps this is the reason for the "gospel") but all the workstations are within 2 years old and have GbE NICs so an upgrade of the core switch is long overdue. However, I know certain applications don't like network access, at all, and any sign of latency or disruption brings the whole thing crashing down. Anyone care to chime in?

  • Fedora 11 System - Failed Hard Drive Removed, and Boot gets GRUB Hard Disk Error

    Greetings, I have a machine with a 120GB ATA drive that has what I thought to be non-essential data on it. I also have a 320GB SATA hard drive with the OS/Application/Files (good data I want to keep). My 120GB ATA is failing I believe, as my computer kept slowing to a halt. However, when I move the drive from BIOS my computer will not start, says "GRUB Hard Disk Error". I know that my Fedora system has an LVM setup. I am looking to just remove the 120GB drive from "the mix", and just have one hard drive. How do I recover ? Thank you. I have access to a Linux Live CD right now and can make any changes. However, it won't boot into my OS - it fails.

  • Move Window Buttons Back to the Right in Ubuntu 10.04

    One of the more controversial changes in the Ubuntu 10.04 beta is the Mac OS-inspired change to have window buttons on the left side. We’ll show you how to move the buttons back to the right. Before While the change may or may not persist through to the April 29 release of Ubuntu 10.04, in the beta version the maximize, minimize, and close buttons appear in the top left of a window. How to move the window buttons The window button locations are dictated by a configuration file. We’ll use the graphical program gconf-editor to change this configuration file. Press Alt+F2 to bring up the Run Application dialog box, enter “gconf-editor” in the text field, and click on Run. The Configuration Editor should pop up. The key that we want to edit is in apps/metacity/general. Click on the + button next to the “apps” folder, then beside “metacity” in the list of folders expanded for apps, and then click on the “general” folder. The button layout can be changed by changing the “button_layout” key. Double-click button_layout to edit it. Change the text in the Value text field to: menu:maximize,minimize,close Click OK and the change will occur immediately, changing the location of the window buttons in the Configuration Editor. Note that this ordering of the window buttons is slightly different than the typical order; in previous versions of Ubuntu and in Windows, the minimize button is to the left of the maximize button. You can change the button_layout string to reflect that ordering, but using the default Ubuntu 10.04 theme, it looks a bit strange. If you plan to change the theme, or even just the graphics used for the window buttons, then this ordering may be more natural to you.   • Custom Icon for NFS Volume Mount - Possible for OSX?

    We are naming our various network volumes after Planets! I renamed the Mercury.icns icon, to .VolumeIcon.icns and copied it over to the mount point folder of the NFS server. So far remounting the NFS share does not seem to employ this icon. Looking on the NFS server, there appears to be two VolumeIcon files. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Permissions? Do I need a .DS_Store file there as well?? It shouldn't be this hard! EDIT: Should have mentioned, the NFS server is Ubuntu 12.04.1. NOT an OSX server.

  • How to keep Ubuntu 11.10 and Kate editor w/terminal from changing command line when changing tabs?

    I am programming C using Kate editor in Ubuntu 11.10. It works great, but when I change tabs in Kate, the terminal line changes to the file path of the tab I click on. Normally this is not a big deal (other than annoyingly adding extra text to my terminal) however if I am currently RUNNNING a C program, it obviously will type at the command line, which is not so cool. Example terminal window for my C program (its at a menu): 1) select opt 1 2) select opt 2 Enter choice: (here it waits for prompt from user) Now when I click a tab in Kate, it wants to put in the cd / path of the file in that tab, such as: cd /home/user/os/files And of course since my terminal was waiting for prompt from user it gets that command.. not good. Perhaps there is no fix, but maybe someone knows? Obviously I could choose NOT to switch tabs or end program before switching tabs... Note: I probably made the mistake of putting this under StackOverflow which is more of a programming area - so though repost here might be best (I am not sure how to link the questions but will paste hyperlink to that post - I dont want to violate any stackoverflow/superuser violations) Suggestions on merging them are welcome or if I should delete one?
