• Commercial Website architecture question

  Hello everyone, I have to write an architecture case study but there are some things that i don't know, so i'd like some pointers on the following : The website must handle 5k simultaneous users. The backend is composed by a commercial software, some webservices, some message queues, and a database. I want to recommend to use Spring for the backend, to deal with the different elements, and to expose some Rest services. I also want to recommend wicket for the front (not the point here). What i don't know is : must i install the front and the back on the same tomcat server or two different ? and i am tempted to put two servers for the front, with a load balancer (no need for session replication in this case). But if i have two front servers, must i have two back servers ? i don't want to create some kind of bottleneck. Based on what i read on this blog a really huge charge is handle by one tomcat only for the first website mentionned. But i cannot find any info on this, so i can't tell if it seems plausible. If you can enlight me, so i can go on in my case study, that would be really helpful. Thanks :)

  i'm looking into using Spring MVC - how would I structure the fact that a page can be composed of several different views Consider a controller that's basically: public ModelAndView handleRequest(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { List<Post> posts = repository.getNewPosts(); return new ModelAndView("posts", "posts", posts); } However, I decide that on every page, I'd also want a side "pane" that shows data based on some logic. That "pane" would just be a .jsp that gets included from the above "posts" view, and I could change my controller to: public ModelAndView handleRequest(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { List<Post> posts = repository.getNewPosts(); List<Items> items= repository.getItems(); return new ModelAndView("model", "model", new MyCommonViewModel(posts,items)); } But then I'd have to change every controller to also do List<Items> items= repository.getItems(); , and change everything again the next time I come up with something new. This seems messy. How do I structure this ? `

  I am accessing Lotus and Groupwise using javamail via IMAP, recursively accessing all folders and processing email I find. But in folders like Tasklist and Calendar (those are from Groupwise but I think I remember Lotus had similar things), I get the items in there as instances of IMAPMessage, and so they are processed as if they were mail. I understand those items get exposed as mail through the IMAP protocol (either by design or by mistake), but I only want to process proper mail. Is there a way to do this? I have dismissed following approaches so far: Make sure the message has a message-id, at least in Groupwise Calendar items have it. Ignore folders by name (such as Calendar and Tasklist): is not totally correct as a user can move mail inside those folders. What I am looking is some IMAP api call I have missed so far or something in those lines...

  Hi. I have an insertOrUpdate method which inserts an Entity when it doesn't exist or update it if it does. To enable this, I have to findByIdAndForeignKey, if it returned null insert if not then update. The problem is how do I check if it exists? So I tried getSingleResult. But it throws an exception if the public Profile findByUserNameAndPropertyName(String userName, String propertyName) { String namedQuery = Profile.class.getSimpleName() + ".findByUserNameAndPropertyName"; Query query = entityManager.createNamedQuery(namedQuery); query.setParameter("name", userName); query.setParameter("propName", propertyName); Object result = query.getSingleResult(); if(result==null)return null; return (Profile)result; } but "getSingleResult" throws an exception.   Is there a way to specify distinct sequences for each table in Hibernate, if the ID is defined on a mapped superclass? All entities in our application extend a superclass called DataObject like this: @MappedSuperclass public abstract class DataObject implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE) @Column(name = "id") private int id; } @Entity @Table(name = "entity_a") public class EntityA extends DataObject { ... } @Entity @Table(name = "entity_b") public class EntityB extends DataObject { ... } This causes all entities to use a shared sequence, the default hibernate_sequence. What I would like to do is use a separate sequence for each entity, for example entity_a_sequence and entity_b_sequence in the example above. If the ID were specified on the subclasses then I could use the @SequenceGenerator annotation to specify a sequence for each entity, but in this case the ID is on the superclass. Given that ID is in the superclass, is there a way I can use a separate sequence for each entity — and if so, how? (We are using PostgreSQL 8.3, in case that's relevant)

  Triangulation works by checking your angle to three KNOWN targets. "I know the that's the Lighthouse of Alexandria, it's located here (X,Y) on a map, and it's to my right at 90 degrees." Repeat 2 more times for different targets and angles. Trilateration works by checking your distance from three KNOWN targets. "I know the that's the Lighthouse of Alexandria, it's located here (X,Y) on a map, and I'm 100 meters away from that." Repeat 2 more times for different targets and ranges. But both of those methods rely on knowing WHAT you're looking at. Say you're in a forest and you can't differentiate between trees, but you know where key trees are. These trees have been hand picked as "landmarks." You have a robot moving through that forest slowly. Do you know of any ways to determine location based solely off of angle and range, exploiting geometry between landmarks? Note, you will see other trees as well, so you won't know which trees are key trees. Ignore the fact that a target may be occluded. Our pre-algorithm takes care of that. 1) If this exists, what's it called? I can't find anything. 2) What do you think the odds are of having two identical location 'hits?' I imagine it's fairly rare. 3) If there are two identical location 'hits,' how can I determine my exact location after I move the robot next. (I assume the chances of having 2 occurrences of EXACT angles in a row, after I reposition the robot, would be statistically impossible, barring a forest growing in rows like corn). Would I just calculate the position again and hope for the best? Or would I somehow incorporate my previous position estimate into my next guess? If this exists, I'd like to read about it, and if not, develop it as a side project. I just don't have time to reinvent the wheel right now, nor have the time to implement this from scratch. So if it doesn't exist, I'll have to figure out another way to localize the robot since that's not the aim of this research, if it does, lets hope it's semi-easy.

  I need to register a custom ELResolver for a Google App Engine project. Since it must be registered before any request is received, as specified by the Javadoc: It is illegal to register an ELResolver after the application has received any request from the client. If an attempt is made to register an ELResolver after that time, an IllegalStateException is thrown. I'm using a ServletContextListener: public class RegisterCustomELResolver implements ServletContextListener { @Override public void contextInitialized(ServletContextEvent sce) { ServletContext context = sce.getServletContext(); JspApplicationContext jspContext = JspFactory.getDefaultFactory().getJspApplicationContext(context); jspContext.addELResolver(new MyELResolver()); } ... } The problem is that JspFactory.getDefaultFactory() returns always null. I've alreay filled a bug report. Any idea for a workaround?

So suppose that we have 2 Actions ActionA and get_menu Action The jsp page for the result of ActionA calls get_menu to generate the menus. So suppose that ActionA sets a variable groups and get_menu also uses a groups variable... ActionA's variable will overtake get_menu's variable. I tried many solutions and even jsp:inculde doesnt help:(...

• Websphere 6.1, Datasource, two apps

  Hi, I've got a webapp running on a Websphere 6.1 Server which JNDI lookups for a datasource. This webapp runs fine, the Websphere server recognizes the datasource ref in the web.xml etc.. Now we added a second webapp which should use this datasource with same configuration but I only getting a NULL Object when I invoke my JNDI lookup and a ClassCastException is thrown (which is correct). Maybe one of you has some suggestions?

  When I instantiate a textField, I have a number in it that I want to be the default text. The problem is, I can't seem to be able to place that value into the textfield without getting an error. The strange thing about it is that the same TextField is what I use to set the value of the variable containing the number. TextField myTF = new TextField("Number", value, 10, TextField.NUMERIC); When I run this code, I receive an exception stating that value doesn't match the constraints of TextField.NUMERIC. However, when I check the vale of the value of the variable, I get the following output: value = 1234567890 value.length() = 10 The value is set by the same TextField, saved to the phone that I am working on, and when loaded from the phone's settings, throws an exception.

  Hi all, I'd like to write a single JDBC statement that can handle the equivalent of any number of NOT BETWEEN date1 AND date2 where clauses. By single query, i mean that the same SQL string will be used to create the JDBC statements and then have different parameters supplied. This is so that the underlying frameworks can efficiently cache the query (i've been stung by that before). Essentially, I'd like to find a query that is the equivalent of SELECT * FROM table WHERE mydate NOT BETWEEN ? AND ? AND mydate NOT BETWEEN ? AND ? AND mydate NOT BETWEEN ? AND ? • Variable length Blob in hibernate?

  I have a byte[] member in one of my persistable classes. Normally, I'd just annotate it with @Lob and @Column(name="foo", size=). In this particular case, however, the length of the byte[] can vary a lot (from ~10KB all the way up to ~100MB). If I annotate the column with a size of 128MB, I feel like I'll be wasting a lot of space for the small and mid-sized objects. Is there a variable length blob type I can use? Will hibernate take care of all of this for me behind the scenes without wasting space? What's the best way to go about this? Thanks!

• Custom Classes Passed from Service to a UI threads via AIDL

  I have a service that regularly queries a web server for new messages. The service stores the new messages in an arrayList. These messages are implemented using a custom class, storing all kinds of metadata (strings and longs). An activity then connects to this service to retrieve those messages and display them to the user. I have an .aidl file that describes the interface that the service exposes. package com.example.package; interface MyInterface { List<Message> getMessages(); } The Message class extends the Parcelable class which should allow for the IPC transfer. The problem is this: Eclipse gives me an error saying that the type of List<Message> is unknown. Any imports are marked as invalid. Ideas? Thanks

• Application Server or Lightweight Container?

  Let me preface this by saying this is not an actual situation of mine but I'm asking this question more for my own knowledge and to get other people's inputs here. I've used both Spring and EJB3/JBoss, and for the smaller types of applications I've built, Spring (+Tomcat when needed) has been much simpler to use. However, when scaling up to larger applications that require things like load balancing and clustering, is Spring still a viable solution? Or is it time to turn to a solution like EJB3/JBoss when you start to get big enough to need that? I'm not sure if I've scoped the problem well enough to get a good answer, so please let me know.
