• Java File IO Compendium

  I've worked in and around Java for nigh on a decade, but have managed to ever avoid doing serious work with files. Mostly I've written database driven applications, but occasionally, even those require some file io. Since I do it so rarely, I end up googling around for quite some time to figure out the exact incantation that Java requires to read a file into a byte[], char[], String or whatever I need at the time. For a 'once and for all' list, I'd like to see all of the usual ways to get data from a file into Java, or vice versa. There will be a fair bit of overlap, but the point is to define all of the subtle different variants that are out there. For example: Read/Write a text file from/to a single String. Read a text file line by line. Read/Write a binary file from/to a single byte[]. Read a binary file into a byte[] of size x, one chunk at a time. The goal is to show concise ways to do each of these. Samples do not need to handle missing files or other errors, as that is generally domain specific. Feel free to suggest more IO tasks that are somewhat common and I have neglected to mention.

• Need to search email body for regex using VBA

  I am trying to write a script that I can run from a rule withing outlook. The goal of this script is to search the email body for a regex pattern, \d{8}-\d{3}\(E\d\) in this case. I want to take that pattern and see if a folder with the name of the match exists and if not create one. I am not super familiar with VBA as I write mostly in python. I have copied and pasted the following bit of code together but at this time I am unable to get the MsgBox to appear when I send an email with 20120812-001(E3) in the body. • Java's Scanner class: using left- and right buttons with Bash

  I'm not too familiar with Linux/Bash, so I can't really find the right terms to search for. Take the snippet: public class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { java.util.Scanner keyboard = new java.util.Scanner(System.in); while(true) { System.out.print("$ "); String in = keyboard.nextLine(); if(in.equals("q")) break; System.out.println(" "+in); } } } If I run it on my Linux box using Bash, I can't use any of the arrow buttons (I'm only interested in the left- and right button, btw). For example, if I type "test" and then try to go back by pressing the left button, ^[[D appears instead of my cursor going back one place: $ test^[[D I've tried the newer Console class as well, but the end result is the same. On Windows' cmd.exe shell, I don't have this problem. So, the question is: is there a way to change my Java code so that I can use the arrow keys without Bash transforming them in sequences like ^[[D but actually move the cursor instead? I'm hoping that I can solve this on a "programming level". If this is not possible, then I guess I'd better try my luck on Superuser to see if there's something I need to change on my Bash console.   Hi all, I've an Enum class public enum MyEnum{ ABC; } than my 'Mick' class has this property private Map<MyEnum, OtherObj> myMap; I've this spring xml configuration. <util:map id="myMap"> <entry key="ABC" value-ref="myObj" /> </util:map> <bean id="mick" class="com.x.Mick"> <property name="myMap" ref="myMap" /> </bean> and this is fine. I'd like to replace this xml configuration with Spring annotations. Do you have any idea on how to autowire the map? The problem here is that if I switch from xml config to the @Autowired annotation (on the myMap attribute of the Mick class) Spring is throwing this exception nested exception is org.springframework.beans.FatalBeanException: Key type [class com.MyEnum] of map [java.util.Map] must be assignable to [java.lang.String] Spring is no more able to recognize the string ABC as a MyEnum.ABC object.   Hello! I was able to deduce my issue: I'm having problem referencing a string with an object within an array. Here's the code: -(IBAction)checkWord:(id)sender { NSMutableArray *array = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; [array addObject:@"BIKE"]; NSString *dudeMan = theWord; if([array containsObject:dudeMan]) { NSLog(@"Awesome!"); } "theWord" is a String object that has been concatenated from 4 letters. It spells "BIKE", and I know this from a NSLog routine further up my code. However, for some reason, even though it spells BIKE, it will not reference correctly with the object within the array. if I change the code to: NSString *dudeMan = @"BIKE"; then the code will work. If it is phrased as: NSString *dudeMan = theWord; Where 'theWord' is BIKE, then the program won't work. Any ideas? Thank you for your help!

• Avoid the problem with BigDecimal when migrating to Java 1.4 to Java 1.5+

  Hello, I've recently migrated a Java 1.4 application to a Java 6 environment. Unfortunately, I encountered a problem with the BigDecimal storage in a Oracle database. To summarize, when I try to store a "7.65E+7" BigDecimal value (76,500,000.00) in the database, Oracle stores in reality the value of 7,650,000.00. This defect is due to the rewritting of the BigDecimal class in Java 1.5 (see here). In my code, the BigDecimal was created from a double using this kind of code: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal("" + someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... In more than 99% of the cases, everything works fine. Except that in really few case, the bug mentioned above occurs. And that's quite annoying. If I change the previous code to avoid the use of the String constructor of BigDecimal, then I do not encounter the bug in my uses cases: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal(someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... However, how can I be sure that this solution is the correct way to handle the use of BigDecimal? So my question is to know how I have to manage my BigDecimal values to avoid this issue: Do not use the new BigDecimal(String) constructor and use directly the new BigDecimal(double)? Force Oracle to use toPlainString() instead of toString() method when dealing with BigDecimal (and in this case how to do that)? Any other solution? • asp.net, how to change text color to red in child nodes in VB codes?

  I got everything worked now by list of server Name but I want to add a IF statement by checking a column from SQL Server called Compliance by either True or False value listed. If it False, the Name will change text color to Red. If it True, the Name won't change text color. I am not sure how add that in VB codes side. I am pretty sure that I would need to put IF statement inside While dr.Read(). I am pretty new to VB.Net and not sure which VB code that change text color. • Can't get past 2542 Threads in Java on 4GB iMac OSX 10.6.3 Snow Leopard (32bit)

  I am running the following program trying to figure out how to configure my JVM to get the maximum number of threads my machine can support. For those that might not know, Snow Leopard ships with Java 6.   Hi, I making a game leaderboard on facebook. I'm not using connect but working inside the canvas. When I try to load the images from facebook it gives me the following error. SecurityError: Error #2122: Security sandbox violation: Loader.content: http://test cannot access http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/v22941/254/15/q652310588_2173.jpg A policy file is required, but the checkPolicyFile flag was not set when this media was loaded.   A while ago, I was trying to pass a dictionary data from my view to my controller. And I was able to do so after googling on the net(remember it was one of scott hanselman's posts).   Is there any alternate way to create stored procedure without putting all query in one long string if criteria of WWHERE clause can be different. Suppose I have Orders table I want to create stored procedure on this table and there are three column on which I wnat to filter records. 1- CustomerId, 2- SupplierId, 3- ProductId. If user only give CustomerId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.CustomerId = @customerId And if user only give ProductId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.ProductId = @productId And if user only all three CustomerId, ProductId, and SupplierId is given then all three Ids will be used in WHERE to filter. There is also chance that user don't want to filter record then query should be like following SELCT * FROM Orders Whenever I have to create this kind of procedure I put all this in string and use IF conditions to check if arguments (@customeId or @supplierId etc) has values. That's not that difficult. The challenge is to find a most generic way to build a class, which serializes/deserializes to and from a byte stream... Pickle, Google protocol buffer, marshal is all not an option. I made little success with having an explicit "def serialize" in my class, but I'm not very happy with it, because it's not generic enough. I hope I could express the problem. • Gravatar XML-RPC request problem in Objective-C

  Hi all, I'm trying to incorporate some Gravatar functionality using its XML-RPC API in an iPhone app I'm writing. I grabbed the Cocoa XML-RPC Framework by Eric Czarny (http://github.com/eczarny/xmlrpc) and it works well when I tested it with some of the Wordpress methods. However, when I try to use the Gravatar API, I always receive a response of "Error code: -9 Authentication error". I think I'm constructing the request correctly, but I've been wracking my brain and can't seem to figure it out. Maybe someone has some experience with this API or can see what I'm doing wrong. Here's the call: <?xml version="1.0"> <methodCall> <methodName>grav.addresses</methodName> <params> <param><value><string>PASSWORD_HERE</string></value></param> </params> </methodCall> Again, the Cocoa XML-RPC Framework worked like a dream with Wordpress, but it's choking on the Gravatar API for some reason. • Problem with ASP.NET Authentication

  I'm having problem with our login procedure. Some customers complain that they can't login. I can see in our logs that their login is successful and that they are redirected from the login page to the member area. But there somehow the login isn't detected and they are bounced back to the login page. I've asked customers to check if cookies are supported (http://www.html-kit.com/tools/cookietester/) but problem remains even if this test returns true.   I've implemented some extension methods and put those in separate Class Library project. Imagine I have a simple extension method like this in class library called MD.Utility: namespace MD.Utility { public static class ExtenMethods { public static bool IsValidEmailAddress(this string s) { Regex regex = new Regex(@"^[\w-\.]+@([\w-]+\.)+[\w-]{2,4}$"); return regex.IsMatch(s); } } } But nowhere in WebApp like App_code folder or WebFroms code-behind page I can't use this Extension method. If I do like this: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using MD.Utility; public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { string email = "[email protected]"; if (email.IsValidEmailAddress()) { //To do } } } The compiler doesn't recognize IsValidEmailAddress() and even no intellisense support. While if I put my extension method in App_Code folder it's ok for using in another cs file in App_code Folder or Web Form code-behind pages.

• Using RecordStore in Java J2ME

  Hi, I am currently doing some J2ME development. I am having a problem in that a user can add and remove elements to the record store, and if a record gets deleted, then that record is left empty and the others don't move up one. I'm trying to come up with a loop that will check if a record has anything in it (incase it has been deleted) and if it does then I want to add the contents of that record to a list. My code is similar to as follows: for (int i = 1; i <= rs.getNumRecords(); i++) { // Re-allocate if necessary if (rs.getRecordSize(i) > recData.length) recData = new byte[rs.getRecordSize(i)]; len = rs.getRecord(i, recData, 0); st = new String(recData, 0, len); System.out.println("Record #" + i + ": " + new String(recData, 0, len)); System.out.println("------------------------------"); if(st != null) { list.insert(i-1, st, null); } } When it gets to rs.getRecordSize(i), I always get a "javax.microedition.rms.InvalidRecordIDException: error finding record". I know this is due to the record being empty but I can't think of a way to get around this problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Adding an application to OpenWithList with Inno Setup

  I'm trying to write an installer for an app I created. I found a suggestion elsewhere that I was trying to follow and it mostly worked. My app is now in the "Open With" list. However, the app won't run at all. Could it be that it's because the app is not being started in its directory, so it can't find the dlls? • MS Access Interop - How to set print filename?

  Hi all, I'm using Delphi 2009 and the MS Access Interop COM API. I'm trying to figure out two things, but one is more important than the other right now. I need to know how to set the file name when sending the print job to the spooler. Right now it's defaulting to the Access DB's name, which can be something different than the file's name. I need to just ensure that when this is printed it enters the print spool using the same filename as the actual file itself - not the DB's name. My printer spool is actually a virtual print driver that converts documents to an image. That's my main issue. The second issue is how to specify which printer to use. This is less important at the moment because I'm just using the default printer for now. It would be nice if I could specify the printer to use, though. Does anyone know either of these two issues?   In order to fill a datagridview according to the selectedvalue of a combobox I've tried creating a stored procedure. However, as I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing, depending on the WHERE statement at the end of my stored procedure, it either returns everything within the table or nothing at all. • How to connect remote EJB module from application client

  Hi guys, I have a EJB module in remote Glassfish server and application client in my computer. I want to connect from the application client to the remote EJB. Here is the my EJB interface: @Remote public interface BookEJBRemote { public String getTitle(); } Here is the my ejb: @Stateless public class BookEJB implements BookEJBRemote { @Override public String getTitle() { return "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"; } } I have several questions : Can I use Dependency Injection in the remote application client to connect to the ejb? If so what can i do to achieve this. Do i need to configure in the sun-ejb-jar.xml and sun-application-client.xml? In other words, if i use DI like @EJB MyEJBRemote ejb; How application client container know what ejb to be injected? Where should i specify the information? How can i run the application client? I tried to run package-appclient in the glassfish server to get appclient.jar and copy it to my computer. Then i type appclient.jar -client myAppClient.jar . It didn't work. How do i point the target server? if i cannot use DI in the client then i guess i have to use JNDI lookup. Do i need to configure jndi name in sun-ejb-jar.xml or in the sun-application-client.xml? No matter how i try i never manage to run application client ? Can you guys put some working example? And thank you for every advises and examples?
