  • Rails - How can I display nicely indented JSON?

    Hi - I have a controller action that returns JSON data for api purposes, and plenty of it. I want to be able to inspect it in the browser, and have it nicely indented for the viewer. For example, if my data is data = { :person => { :id => 1, :name => "john doe", :age => 30 }, :person => ... } I want to see { "person" : { "id" : 1, "name" : "john doe", "age" : 30, }, "person" : { "id" : 2, "name" : "jane doe", "age" : 31, }, ...etc } In the view. I thought about using different routes to get the bulk/pretty data: # GET /api/json # ... respond_to do |format| format.html { render :json => data.to_json } end # GET /api/json/inspect # ... respond_to do |format| format.html { render :text => pretty_json } end Anyone knows of a gem/plugin that does this or something similar? I tried using JSON.pretty_generate, but it doesn't seem to work inside rails (2.3.5). thanks.

    I wrote this little function for writing out HTML tags: def html_tag(tag, content=None, close=True, attrs={}): lst = ['<',tag] for key, val in attrs.iteritems(): lst.append(' %s="%s"' % (key, escape_html(val))) if close: if content is None: lst.append(' />') else: lst.extend(['>', content, '</', tag, '>']) else: lst.append('>') return mark_safe(''.join(lst)) Which worked great, but then I read this article on efficient string concatenation (I know it doesn't really matter for this, but I wanted consistency) and decided to update my script: def html_tag(tag, body=None, close=True, attrs={}): s = StringIO() s.write('<%s'%tag) for key, val in attrs.iteritems(): s.write(' %s="%s"' % (key, escape_html(val))) if close: if body is None: s.write(' />') else: s.write('>%s</%s>' % (body, tag)) else: s.write('>') return mark_safe(s.getvalue()) But now my HTML get escaped when I try to render it from my template. Everything else is exactly the same. It works properly if I replace the last line with return mark_safe(unicode(s.getvalue())). I checked the return type of s.getvalue(). It should be a str, just like the first function, so why is this failing?? Also fails with SafeString(s.getvalue()) but succeeds with SafeUnicode(s.getvalue()). I'd also like to point out that I used return mark_safe(s.getvalue()) in a different function with no odd behavior. The "call stack" looks like this: class Input(Widget): def render(self): return html_tag('input', attrs={'type':self.itype, 'id':self.id, 'name':self.name, 'value':self.value, 'class':self.itype}) class Field: def __unicode__(self): return mark_safe(self.widget.render()) And then {{myfield}} is in the template. So it does get mark_safed'd twice, which I thought might have been the problem, but I tried removing that too..... I really have no idea what's causing this, but it's not too hard to work around, so I guess I won't fret about it.

    Hi, First of all, quickly what exactly I want to achieve: translate particular exception into the HTTP 404 so the ASP.NET can handle it further. When it is on then it never redirects to the page specified in customErrors: <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>. I also tried to raise new HttpExcepton(404, "Not Found") from the handler but then the response code is 200 which I don't understand why. So the questions are: What is the proper way of translating AnException into HTTP 404 response? How does customErrors section work when handling exceptions in Application_Error? It works, of course, when a user changes the select box value in the browser. But I've tried many ways to fire it programmatically, none of which have worked.     Hi All, I am deploying a Django project on apache server with mod_python in linux. I have created a directory structure like: /var/www/html/django/demoInstall where demoInstall is my project. In the httpd.conf I have put the following code. <Location "/django/demoInstall"> SetHandler python-program PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE demoInstall.settings PythonOption django.root django/demoInstall PythonDebug On PythonPath "['/var/www/html/django'] + sys.path" </Location> It is getting me the django environment but the issue is that the urls mentioned in urls.py are not working correctly. In my url file I have mentioned the url like: (r'^$', views.index), Now, in the browser I am putting the url like : http://domainname/django/demoInstall/ and I am expecting the views.index to be invoked. But I guess it is expecting the url to be only: http://domainname/ . When I change the url mapping to: (r'^django/demoInstall$', views.index), it works fine. Please suggest as I do not want to change all the mappings in url config file. Thanks in advance.

    I have two tables -- Variables (id, name) and Variable_Entries (id, var_id, value). I want each variable to have a unique set of entries. If I make the value entry unique then a different variable won't be able to have that same value which is not right. Is there some way to make the value column unique for identical var_id's?

I don't want the URL to show the action name and parameter. I simply want to show "Summary" which is what I have hard coded in the URL. How do I achieve this?

    I am trying to use Heroku and apparently Postgresql is a lot more strict than SQL for aggregate functions. When I am pushing to Heroku I am getting an error stating the below. Now when I run the server at 127.0.0.1:8000/accounts/register/ I get a basic registration page, I fill in the details and when I click submit I get this error "NoReverseMatch at /accounts/register/" Error during template rendering In template Users/sudhasinha/mysite/mysite/registration/templates/registration/activation_email.txt, error at line 4 'url' requires a non-empty first argument.   • Getting "Comment post not allowed (400)" when using Django Comments

    I'm going through a Django book and I seem to be stuck. The code base used in the book is .96 and I'm using 1.0 for my Django install. The portion I'm stuck at is related to Django comments (django.contrib.comments). When I submit my comments I get "Comment post not allowed (400) Why: Missing content_type or object_pk field". I've found the Django documentation to be a bit lacking in this area and I'm hoping to get some help. The comment box is displayed just fine, it's when I submit the comment that I get the above error (or security warning as it truly appears). Now, I want to return (preferably with one query) a list of an arbitrary number of projects, sorted by the total amount of time spent at them, which is found by SUM(time_stop) - SUM(time_start) WHERE project_id = something. So far, I have SELECT project.name FROM service LEFT JOIN project ON project.id = service.project_id LIMIT 100 but I cannot figure out how what to ORDER BY.
