  • Windows RemoteApp deploying software updates, is there a better way?

    We provide an application as a service, over Windows RemoteApp. It's nearly impossible to deploy updates to the software, though, because if even a single user is online then the file is in-use and cannot be replaced. Is there some way to make this possible or easier? If it were possible, I'd be deploying probably 2-3 updates per day. As it is, I sometimes have to go all week without deploying one.

    It doesn't matter whether you just use it for fun or run your multi-million euro business with it. Also, if you install it on your work PC at some large company, this is still personal use. However, if you are an administrator and want to deploy it to the 500 desktops in your company, this would no longer qualify as personal use.     Windows Server 2003, IIS6. We're trying to deploy a non-MVC ASP.NET web application as a subdirectory of an MVC application. However the ASP.NET application in the subdirectory is failing with the message "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." which is bizarre because it's not an MVC application.

  • Shares on Hyper-V Host or Guest?

    I'm about to deploy a Hyper-V Server, that will have 2 local drives: 250GB for VMs, 2TB for Shares. Does Hyper-V Server (standalone, not as a role) allow you to setup Network Shares? Or will I have to setup a VM with the 2TB drive allocated to it, for setting up the Shares? If Hyper-V supports Shares, would there be a performance benefit? The Shares will be used by both the VMs on the Hyper-V Server and other Servers within the Network.

  • Xen guest miration to host with missing features

    If I want to move a xen guet (domU) from one host (dom0) to another host on another hardware platform which misses some capabilities, say virtualisation features, especially directio or likewise, will my image be able to run despite missing capabilities of the new host? This is important because I need to know if I can prepare XEN images on my workstation with full virtualisation features and deploy same images on less capable Servers later on.   • Apache Alias subfolder and starting with dot

    I have a multi purpose server running ArchLinux that currently serves multiple virtual hosts from /var/www/domains/EXAMPLE.COM/html /var/www/domains/EXAMPLE2.COM/html I deploy those websites (mostly using Kohana framework) using a Jenkins job by checking out the project, removes the .git folder and ssh-copy the tar.gz to /var/www/domains/ on the server and untars it. Since I don't want to have to re-install phpMyAdmin after each deploy, I decided to use an alias. I would like the alias to be something like /.tools/phpMyAdmin/ so I could have more "tools" later if I wanted to.     I've seen offerings such as VPSs (Linode, Rackspace Cloud), which are very cheap but you're on your own, and managed hosting (Engine Yard, Rackspace), which are very expensive but they do all the system administration for you, in some cases even writing your deploy scripts. Is there any kind of middle-ground option where I don't have to pay the huge flat rate for the management, but can still request specific sysadmin tasks to be carried out and pay on an hourly basis?

Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, September 24, 2012 12:26:00 PM. Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, October 31, 2148 6:55:12 PM. you see, the lease expires in year 2148 but my VM will likely not run for more than one month - when I deploy the new version of my code I first deploy it to new VMs, then switch traffic, then release the new VMs. In general such usage pattern is normal - VMs typically live from several dozen minutes to several weeks on Azure. I suspect the lease that long will cause problems on the internal Azure network sooner or later. Is such long DHCP lease okay or is it likely a misconfiguration?

  • Problem deploying GWT application on apache and tomcat using mod_jk

    I'm trying to deploy a GWT app on Apache using mod_jk connector. I have compiled the application and tested it on tomcat on the address localhost:8080/loginapp and it works ok.   • WSUS is not using Akamai CDN for syncronisation source

    I've just installed a WSUS onto our network, and I'm currently doing the initial sync. I've found that WSUS does not seem to be talking to an Akamai cache, but rather with MS directly. This is contrary to what I've always thought regarding Windows Update traffic. Tcpdump of our WSUS server doing initial sync... As you can see it's speaking with 65.55.194.221. For me to speak to this IP, I have to go over international transit links. We'll be looking to join an IX shortly with the hopes of peering with an Akamai cache and have very fast access to Windows Updates. Before I let this drive my motivations for an IX at all I want to first confirm it's actually possible for WSUS to speak with an Akamai cache. I know this is somewhat networking related, but I feel like it has more to do with WSUS than anything, so someone who knows WSUS better than me will likely be able to figure this out.

  • Deployment/provisioning tool for commercial applications (not developed in-house)

    I help manage a few hosted commercial applications, and we have a lot of manual processes involved when doing new customer-instance deployments into the shared (multitenant) environment. Allow me to describe the most relevant features, and then we can talk about the tools. We have an application on AIX, that requires dozens of changes to config files (some plain text, some XML) as well as a good number of commands to be run on multiple servers - some to start the new instance, some to restart our shared authentication and reporting engines, etc. The config changes follow templates, of course. The servers in question will also depend on the initial conditions specified by the implementer/deployer - we may choose to deploy a given customer to our servers in Europe, or one set of servers may be active-active whereas a different set of servers is active-passive - in short, there's a lot of complications. We have another application that run on IIS 6 and SQL. The DBAs don't want any automation of the SQL components and that's fine with me, but automating the IIS bit would be great. For a new customer instance, we make a filesystem copy of a template Virtual Directory target named after the new customer, make a new AppPool to match, edit a VirDir template .xml file to replace the filepaths and AppPool names with the new ones, and then make a new VirDir from the modified template XML to point to the new filesystem folder and app pool. For the first case, something like ControlTier or Chef might be good. For the second, the new(ish) Web Deploy from MS would probably do a good job. Has anyone used these tools or others to do something similar for applications? More of a nice-to-have, not a fixed requirement - Has anyone used anything that works on both platforms? I'm looking for something free, because the official word is that within a year, we will have whatever HP has renamed the OpsWare suite, which should be able to do stuff like this. Edit - based on someone's suggestion, looking at CFengine for the AIX application, it doesn't seem to address my pain. The problem isn't keeping a given config synced across dozens of servers, we have rsync for that. The problem is that onboarding a new customer instance touches dozens of files, putting pieces of the same or similar information into them - some are new stanzas in existing files, some are new files, and some are new directories. This is a several-hours-long process that is also error-prone because it's mostly done by hand. I guess I'm looking for config-file generation and management. I have built a small Perl script to do something similar for a much smaller case - it binds a CSV file into variables, and then does a copy-and-search-and-replace from a set of template config files. I could probably do the same here.

I assume I need to install some type of codec pack. I'm looking for suggestions on a codec pack that I can easily deploy through a Win2003 server to WinXP clients. Ideally, this codec pack shouldn't break anything else and be easily removed if need be.

  • Office 2007 Installer Not Logging When Run During Startup Script

    I'm using a startup script to deploy Microsoft Office 2007 Standard. It's not working quite right and I'm trying to find logging information for it. Unfortunately, no log is being generated by setup. I've tried configuring the log at %temp%\, C:\, %systemroot%\temp and leaving it at defaults, all to no avail. Nothing is showing up in the event logs, either. Is there anywhere else I can go to look for information on what's going on with the installer?

  • Remote script execution on Windows 2003 server - alternatives to PSEXEC

    We are wanting to deploy our application to our Test server from our Hudson server. I'd like to be able to have hudson copy the application files and start a script that would run locally on our Test server. We can't use psexec because of a cross domain policy. Currently we are doing this manually, by RDPing to the Test server and checking out the code from subversion manually. Are there alternatives to PSExec that can bypass the cross domain policy problem?
