• SEO/Google: How should I handle multiple countries and domains?

  Hello. I'm the webmaster of an online shop based in Austria (Europe). Therefore we registered "example.at". We also own different other domain names like "example-shop.com" and "example.info". Currently all those domains are redirected (301) to the .at one. Still available is: "example.net" and "example.org" (and .ws/.cc), unfortunately not available: .de/.eu The .com is currently owned by one of our partners, the contract ends in 2012 but until then we have no chance to get this one. Recently I read more about geo-targeting and I noticed ONE big deal. The tld ".at" is hardly recognised in Germany (google.de) whereas it is excellently listed in Austria (google.at). As a result of the .at I cannot set the target location manually (or to unlisted). More info: https://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=62399&hl=en This is a big problem. I looked at Google Analytics and - although Germany is 10x as big as Austria - there are more visits from Austria. So, how should I config the domain in order to get the best results in both, Germany and Austria? I thought of some solutions: First I could stop redirecting the .info. Then there would be a duplicate of the .at one. Moreover, in Webmastertools, I could set the target location of the .info to Germany. As the .at still targets Austria, both would be targeted - however I don't now if google punishes one of them because of the duplicate content? Same as 1. but with .net or .org (I think .info is not a "nice" domain and moreover I think search engines prefer .com, .net or .org to .info). Same as 1. (or 2.) but with a rel="canonical" on the new one (pointing to the .at). Con: I don't think this will improve the situation, because it still tells google that the .at one is more important, like: "if .info points to .at, the target may still be Austria". rel="canonical" on the .at pointing to the new (.info or .net or .org). However I fear that this will have a negative impact on the listing on google.at because: "Hey, the well-known .at is not important anymore, so let's focus on the .info which is not well-known." - Therefore: bad position in search results. Redirect .at to the new (.info or .net or .org) with a 301-Redirect. Con: Might be worse than 4, we might loose Page-Rank (or "the value of the page", because google says that page rank is not important anymore). Moreover this might be even more confusing for the customers. In 3. or 4. customers don't get redirected, they do not see the canonical-meta-tag. So, dear experts, please tell me what the best option would be! Thank you very much for your advice in advance and please excuse the long question. I really appreciate this network! • Best way to load application settings

  A simple way to keep the settings of a Java application is represented by a text file with ".properties" extension containing the identifier of each setting associated with a specific value (this value may be a number, string, date, etc..). C# uses a similar approach, but the text file must be named "App.config". In both cases, in source code you must initialize a specific class for reading settings: this class has a method that returns the value (as string) associated with the specified setting identifier. // Java example Properties config = new Properties(); config.load(...); String valueStr = config.getProperty("listening-port"); // ... // C# example NameValueCollection setting = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings; string valueStr = setting["listening-port"]; // ... In both cases we should parse strings loaded from the configuration file and assign the ??converted values to the related typed objects (parsing errors could occur during this phase). After the parsing step, we must check that the setting values ??belong to a specific domain of validity: for example, the maximum size of a queue should be a positive value, some values ??may be related (example: min < max), and so on. Suppose that the application should load the settings as soon as it starts: in other words, the first operation performed by the application is to load the settings. Any invalid values for the settings ??must be replaced automatically with default values??: if this happens to a group of related settings, those settings are all set with default values. The easiest way to perform these operations is to create a method that first parses all the settings, then checks the loaded values ??and finally sets any default values??. However maintenance is difficult if you use this approach: as the number of settings increases while developing the application, it becomes increasingly difficult to update the code. Are there other solutions to this kind of problem? In summary: Easy maintenance: for example, the addition of one or more parameters. Extensibility: a first version of the application could read a single configuration file, but later versions may give the possibility of a multi-user setup (admin sets up a basic configuration, users can set only certain settings, etc..). Object oriented design.

  First time when I tried to do something in WPF, I was puzzled with WPF DataBinding. Then I studied thorougly next example on MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms771319(v=VS.90).aspx Now, I quite understand how to use Master-Detail paradigm for a form which takes data from one source (one table) - both for master and detailed parts. I mean for example I have a grid with data and below the grid I have a few fields with detailed data of current row. But how to do it, if detailed data comes from different but related tables? for example: you have a Table 'Users' with columns - 'id' and 'Name'. You also have another table 'Pictures' with columns like 'id','Filename','UserId'. And now, using master-detail paradigm you have to built a form. And every time when you chose a row in a Master you should get all associated pictures in Details. What is the right way to do it? Could you please show me an example?

Can these limits be circumvented by subdomains (e.g. example.com, hack1.example.com and hack2.example.com all have their own 5 MB databases)? And is there anything in the standard that specifies whether parent domains can access their children's databases? I can't find anything, and I can see arguments for doing it either way, but it seems like there has to be some standard model.

• How do I use local memory in OpenCL?

  I've been playing with OpenCL recently, and I'm able to write simple kernels that use only global memory. Now I'd like to start using local memory, but I can't seem to figure out how to use get_local_size() and get_local_id() to compute one "chunk" of output at a time. For example, let's say I wanted to convert Apple's OpenCL Hello World example kernel to something the uses local memory. How would you do it? Here's the original kernel source: __kernel square( __global float *input, __global float *output, const unsigned int count) { int i = get_global_id(0); if (i < count) output[i] = input[i] * input[i]; } If this example can't easily be converted into something that shows how to make use of local memory, any other simple example will do.   I've seen example com.example.android.apis.view.List11 from ApiDemos. In that example, each row takes the view android.R.simple_list_item_multiple_choice. Each such view has a TextView and a CheckBox. Now I want each view to have 2 TextView's and 1 CheckBox, somewhat similar to the List3 example. • Why would HTTP transfer via wget be faster than lftp/pget?

  I'm building software that needs to do massive amounts of file transfer via both HTTP and FTP. Often times, I get faster HTTP download with a multi-connection download accelerator like axel or lftp with pget. In some cases, I've seen 2x-3x faster file transfer using something like: axel http://example.com/somefile or lftp -e 'pget -n 5 http://example.com/somefile;quit' vs. just using wget: wget http://example.com/somefile But other times, wget is significantly faster than lftp. Strangly, this is even true even when I do lftp with get, like so: lftp -e 'pget -n 1 http://example.com/somefile;quit' I understand that downloading a file via multiple connections won't always result in a speedup, depending on how bandwidth is constrained. But: why would it be slower? Especially when calling lftp/pget with -n 1?

Now I have two questions: When looking at those examples, what are the advantages of PHPs and JavaScripts type systems? I can only find downsides: They are inconsistent and I think we know that this is not good Types conversions are hardly controllable Bugs are more likely to happen and much harder to spot Do you prefer one of the both systems? Why? Personally I have worked with PHP, JavaScript and Python so far and must say that Pythons type system has really only advantages over PHPs and JavaScripts. Does anybody here not think so? Why then?

  Hello! At the moment, I try to include addthis social-bookmarks to my site. My problem is, that I have to bookmark another link than the url on my site. Instead of www.example.com, I have to bookmark www.example.com?media=my-media-file. From the beginning: A User comes to my site. On my site are several movies. He can click on a movie thumbnail and watch the movie without reloading the site (javascript). Now he can click on my social bookmark icon to share this movie. Now the addthis framework thinks that the User want's to share www.example.com (cause this is whats in my url). But I want the user to share www.example.com?media=foo-bar .
