  • Understanding Linux SCSI queue depths

    I'm experimenting with the effects of different SCSI queue depth values on a Dell server running CentOS Linux 5.4 (x86_64). The server has two QLogic QLE2560 FC HBAs connected via multipathing to a storage system. The storage system has allocated two LUNs to the server, each connected through four paths in an active-active-active-active round-robin configuration. All in all, the two LUNs exist as eight /dev/sdX devices, represented by two devices in /dev/mpath. I currently adjust the queue depth values in /etc/modprobe.conf and check the result (after rebooting) by looking in the seventh column of /proc/scsi/sg/devices. Two questions related to that: Is there a way to adjust queue depths without rebooting or unloading the qla2xxx kernel module? E.g., can I echo a new queue depth value into some /proc or /sys-like file to update the queue depth? If I set the queue depth to 128, is that 128 in total for all devices handled by the qla2xxx module?, or 128 for each HBA? (256 in total), or 128 for each of the eight /dev/sdX devices (1024 in toal)?, or 128 for each of the two /dev/mpath/... devices (256 in total)? This is important for me to know so that my server doesn't flood the storage system, affecting other servers connected to it.

  • process and memory issue on linux server

    Need some assistance in analyzing apache and php process running on linux server. Its a 8-core intel processor with 4GB ram. When the website on it runs the top displays like this. Both apache and php was preconfigured so not sure whats done there. Tried setting up the same site and db on a different server but on it the process shows httpd always and not php5. The site uses mysql db. The problem is server load seems to go till about 5.x when the website was access by about 16users. When the free -m command was given the output shows total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3941 3727 213 0 236 2734 -/+ buffers/cache: 756 3184 Swap: 4095 0 4095 Lots of memory seems to be in cache and free memory is less. Even when the website is not accessed that is leaving it very much idle for about 2days the free memory showed just 190. When the site is accessed the free memory seems to be go till 90mb then it increases to about 150mb. It always seems to remain just about 200mb. Is it somehow related to the server load showing 5.x. Will adding some more RAM resolve the load issue?

  • Deploying a Git server in a AWS linux instance

    I'm making a git server on my linux instance in AWS. I tried doing it using these instructions but in the end I always get stuck with a "Permission denied (publickey)" message. So here is my detailed steps, the client is my windows machine running mysysgit and the server is the AWS ubuntu instance : 1) I created user Git with a simple password. 2) Created the ssh directory in ~/.ssh 3) On the client I created ssh keys using ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 1024, they got dropped in my /Users/[Name]/.ssh directory, id_rsa and id_rsa.pub key pair was created. 4) Using notepad I copy pasted the text into newly created files on the server in the ~/.ssh directory of my Git user. ~/.ssh/id_rsa and **~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub** were copied. 5) On the server I made the authorized_hosts file using "cat id_rsa.pub authorized_hosts" (while inside the .ssh directory) 6) Now to test it, on my client machine I did ssh -v git@[ip.address] 7) Result : debug1: Host 'ip.address' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/known_hosts:1 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Offering public key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try.   • Remote Desktop failed logon event 4625 not logging correctly on 2008 Terminal Services server

    When I use the new remote desktop with ssl and try to log on with bad credentials it logs a 4625 event as expected. The problem is, it doesn't log the ip address, so I can't block malicious logons in our firewall.   • Backup plan for linux webserver in small business?

    Hi, I am currently in the process of writing a backup plan for the webserver in use by my business. I am very new to this area and have a few ideas about how things should work but am unsure of what tools to use and what sort of restore process is appropriate. I'm looking for something relatively simplistic and it doesn't have to be 100% paranoid just enough to give me a reliable backup. Speed is not of the essence and there is not going to be a live fallback in place. The backup will be onto a single hdd that will be stored onsite (no option for offsite as yet). Backups will be taking place weekly. I am constrained by both time and money which is why I'm aiming for a good enough solution. Is taking an image of the webserver system drive periodically and using that as the backup appropriate? Should I be testing that the backups restore correctly every time that I perform one? This is a bit broad but what setup would you use if you were in my place, given the services I am running? Should I add additonal machines and split the services? Any advice is much appreciated! The only thing that works is if I chmod 777 thefile.jpg after it has been transferred, which is not a working solution. I tried changing the owner of my site files to www-data per this post, but that also does not work. My user is mike, and it still does not work whether the owner of the files is mike or root. Would somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks! And, of course, let me know if I can clarify anything.

  • How to Set Up an SMTP Submission Server on Linux

    I was trying to set up a mail server with no luck. I want it to accept mail from authenticated users only and deliver them. I want the users to be able to connect over the internet. Ideally the mail server wouldn't accept any incoming mail. Essentially I want it to accept messages on a receiving port and transfer them to the intended recipient out port 25. If anyone has some good links and guides that would be awesome. I am quite familiar with linux but have never played around with MTA's and am currently running debian 6. More Specific Problem! Sorry, that was general and postfix is complex. I am having trouble enabling the submission port with encryption and authentication. What Works: Sending mail from the local machine. (sendmail [email protected]). Ports are open. (25 and 587) Connecting to 587 appears to work, I get a "need to starttls" warning and starttls appears to work.     I have problems filling a temporary table with the resultset from a procedure call on a linked server, in which again a procedure on another server is called. I have a Stored Procedure sproc1 with the following code, which calls another procedure sproc2 on a linked server. SET @sqlCommand = 'EXEC ' + @targetServer +'.database.usr.sproc3 ' + @param exec ( @sqlCommand ) The whole thing doen't work, as I get an SQL error 7391 The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "%ls" for linked server "%ls" was unable to begin a distributed transaction. I already checked the hints at this microsoft article, but without success. But maybe, I can change the code in sproc1. Would there be some alternative to the temp table and the open query? Just calling stored procedures from server A to B to C and returning the resultset is working (I do this often in the application). But this special case with the temp table and openquery doesn't work! Or is it just not possible what I am trying to do? The microsft article states: Check the object you refer on the destination server. If it is a view or a stored procedure, or causes an execution of a trigger, check whether it implicitly references another server. If so, the third server is the source of the problem. Run the query directly on the third server. If you cannot run the query directly on the third server, the problem is not actually with the linked server query. Resolve the underlying problem first. Is this my case? PS: I can't avoid the architecture with the three servers.

    Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects.   • Server 2012 DFS New Member Issue

    I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. I have tried several times to add the third DC to our DFS topology, every time i configure the replication path e.g E:\MSI and click ok the MMC snap in crashes.     I've been trying to install either Arch Linux or Fedora 17 on VMWare Workstation (7.1.3). After I point to the right ISO image, I get the following error: Booting the kernel PANIC: early exception 0d rip:ffffffff81042dc4 error 0 cr2 0 I am trying to install it on a machine which has a 3rd generation i5 processor. After checking A VMWare panic early exception fix for ivy bridge i3, i5, i7, I tried to turn off the nosmep acpi. This is around, I get the same error but at a different address. Apparently, others have faced this issue before. Thanks in advance.

    I'm writing a phone app for Android that connects to a bluetooth RFCOMM device in my car. My phone app talks AT commands with it. For development work, I often need to communicate with the device to try different commands and things. My neighbors are starting to think I'm weird because I sit in my car for hours on end with my laptop screen shining on my face, typing away like a script kiddie. I'd much rather configure one of my many Linux servers to act as a bluetooth RFCOMM device and allow me to connect to it (indoors, while I sit on my couch). I imagine I have to start with something like sdptool add SP But then what? I'm perfectly happy writing a perl app to handle the I/O, but I just don't know how to make the bluez stack accept connections and subsequently pipe that stream to a perl app.

    i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts?
