• How to Deploy my Open Source Projects using Maven's Central Repository?

  Is there anything I could do to get my own open source stuff into Maven's Central repository? I've wondered many times how I could get my own projects into Maven's Central repository. I was asking this myself, especially as I've seen some well known projects hosting their own repository, requiring users to add dependency and repository. At the same time, it's getting difficult for other projects to depend on those projects. As I neither want others to add an additional repository nor to host one myself, I'm looking for other ways. And why aren't some projects using the option to deploy to Maven Central in favor of their self-hosted repository? Any good reasons that aren't obvious?

• View plain text files with different background colors in Mac OSX, for different programming languag

  Hi, I work with Mac OS X Leopard. I usually have 5 or 10 text files opened at the same time with different programming languages; one for a bash script, another for a python one, etc. When I use exposé all of them look the same, so it is difficult to select them. I wonder how could I work with just plain text files in OSX, so when they are opened in an editor the background color changes or some other thign, so when using exposé it is clear to me which window belongs to what language. I thought about inserting some kind of info to the last line of each document, and then creat some applescript that converts it to RTF or someother text document which includes color in bacjground, so then it is opened with textmate or someother app. Do you know a better approach for this? • MVVM and division of amongst multiple developers

  Can anyone speak to the ease of dividing work amongst multiple developers when designing and building a medium- to large-complexity Silverlight or WPF application? My team is finding it difficult to cleanly split work when you've got, for example, a number of controls that provide different visualizations of a Model/ViewModel that's fairly complex and has a lot of properties and methods for interacting with data. It seems like a very big portion of the work ends up being the design and build of the Model/ViewModel, and much less inside each of the controls, which are naturally what are easy to ration out to multiple people.

• Is there a language designed for code golf?

  I am not really a fan of code golf, but I have to wonder, is there an esoteric language designed for it? I mean a language with following properties: Common programs may be expressed in very short amount of characters It uses ASCII character set effectively (for example, common operators are not identifiers, so they don't have to be separated by whitespace, character usage is distributed more or less evenly because we cannot use Huffman coding and so on) Except the terse syntax, it should have very expressible and clean semantics (like, let's say, Python or Scheme); it shouldn't be difficult to program in It doesn't need features for large scale programs, such as OOP, but it definitely should allow custom functions and data structures It should have a large standard library, identifiers in this library should be as short as possible Maybe it should be called CG? Languages that can be a source of inspiration are Forth, APL and Joy.

• Database schema publishing with SQL Server 2005/2008

  Hi everybody, I've a question for you. We have built a software that has a single database for each customer. These databases are managed by SQL Server 2008. Now the problem is that when we build our software we, sometimes, need to change something on the schema (like adding table, modifying existing ones etc) and migrate these updates on all the customers' databases. Now this task is accomplished by hand: we generate update scripts and then, using T-SQL, we update each database. This is ok for a small set of customer, but we are now becoming bigger and bigger and we really don't know how to face it. We found Wizardby and it seems interesting, but quite difficult for us to learn in this exact moment. Do you have any other trick? Thanks a lot, Marco

  I'm just starting to work with Silverlight (no WPF experience either) and am having a difficult time finding a source that provides a full explanation of Data Binding. There is absolutely no lack of tutorials (starting with the ones on Silverlight.net or Scott Gu's blogs), but everything I have found is "by example". Is there a resource that explains how data binding works in Silverlight, from a Fundamental/Conceptual perspective, and provides end-to-end coverage of data binding features? The desire for a more fundamental source of information is driven by a number of questions that came up this afternoon in reviewing tutorials and writing sample apps, such as: Why can't I bind the value of a slider like this?: Value="{Binding=Age, Mode=TwoWay}" where Age refers to an int property in the object data context I bind in code-behind (the Visual Studio error message is Expected '[]'. How do I use the DataContext property in VS 2010? What's a Path, Relative Source, Static Source, ...?

  it's a task, on which i think during whole day. i have four integer numbers a, b, c, d, and ineger x[1,40]. i must write a program, which can find the values of {a,b,c,d}, for which one of following equations is true for any (x<=40, x=1) x=a or x=b or x=a+b or x=a+b+c+d or x+a=c+d or x+a+b=c+d or ... x+a+b+c=d or ... it is very difficult to explain what i want to say. maybe the example will be helpful. example: if x=17, by {a=1,b=2,c=5,d=15} i can write x+a+b=c+d whole question is to present any x[1,40] by {a,b,c,d}. hope that you understand what i want to say, and thanks in advance

• Beautifying a SWT application on Mac

  SWT is designed to be cross-platform, so it can run on a Mac. The problem is it commits the cardinal sin of Macland - it's UGLY. Toolbars don't look like Mac toolbars, status bars don't look like Mac status bars, etc. Does anyone have any experience in making an SWT application look more like a Mac application? For example, by making platform-specific JNI calls via the 'OS' class in SWT? If so, how difficult was it? • how to deal with a static analyzer output

  We have started using a static analyzer (Coverity) on our code base. We were promptly stupefied by the sheer amount of warnings we received (its in the hundreds of thousands) , it will take the entire team a few mounts to clear them all (obliviously impossible). the options we discussed so far are 1) hire a contractor to sort out the warning and fix them - he drawback: we will probably need very experiences people to do all these modifications, and no contractor will have required understanding of the code. 2) filter out the warning and deal only with the dangerous ones - the problem here is that our static analysis output will always be cluttered by warning making it difficult for us to isolate problems. also the filtering of the warning is also a major effort. either way, bringing our code to a state when the static analyzer can be a useful tool for us seems a monumental task. so how is it possible to work with the static analyzer without braining current development efforts into a complete stand still?

• Is there a way to configure Fiddler to intercept HTTP calls from a Windows service?

  We're in the process of replacing an old (5+ years) Windows service application built with VS2005 that makes an HTTP GET call. There are several things that make this difficult (such as the web server is on the customer's network and we can't connect directly to it) and, unfortunately, we'd prefer not to take down the running system to replace it with a WinForm version that can be monitored by Fiddler. The new code appears to be doing everything correctly, but, alas, it is failing to authenticate. Is there a way to configure Fiddler (2.2.9.1) to intercept HTTP calls from a Windows service?

  i have windows 2003 server domain environment in my office. my server ip is: 192.168.1.2 if i put this IP in DNS of my laptop network card my folder SYNC works fine & also internet work fine in office. but internet did't work in my home for that i need to change DNS again to Auto & internet start working again. its too difficult to change cause some time i don't have administrative password. is there any solution to that? • correct way to turn EAR module into OSGI bundle

  Greetings to all! There is a necessity to turn part of EAR (namely - war) into OSGI bundle and retain it's interoperability. Glassfish 3.0.1 already has osgi-web-container module and I succeeded to deploy standalone OSGI war. But in case of of ex-enterprise war it looks a bit difficult to me. What do I do with EJB calls from inside future OSGI war? Is it enough to replace @EJB injections with true JNDI lookups? What about APIs and libraries shared across EAR? I could split and rearrange them, but still I will have at least one jar needed by both EAR and OSGI war. Duplicate, make it as OSGI-bundle itself and make it available to ear somehow, place it GF domain's library path? Any other ideas, advices which could make that hybrid working? The function above is called on another selectboxes "OnChange" event, to fill sub-select-box with the desired options. • MCV/MVP Patterns and Applications that interface with Hardware (DAQ/PLC/etc)

  I've been reading a lot about the MCV and MVP patterns for use with UI and it seems like a really nice powerful way to handle user interfaces. I am - however - having a difficult time deciding how this could integrate into a system where data in the model is created from a Data Acquisition System or Serial/Ethernet devices. There is also the added step that 70% of application interaction is performed by a PLC instead of a live user. It seems that for apps that just read/write & manipulate information from a database this works great, but how does does hardware and automation fit into these patterns? Is it as simple as another controller (for lack of a better term) that interacts with hardware that manipulates data and writes to a model? Maybe I am over thinking this or thinking too simply, so any advice would be great. I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this, so if something doesn't make sense or I was too vague leave me a comment. Thanks!

• debugging on bsd using gdb or similar tootls

  I have started using freebsd lately and realized gdb does not support remote debugging on it. Whenever, I try to do remote debugging using gdbserver, I run into SIGSEGV crashes and error message says can’t find definition of “r_debug_state”. Has anyone ever experienced this and solved it? Statically compiled single threaded programs can be compiled using gdbserver. However, other than that it is mostly looking difficult to use. Let me know if anyone knows any other tools to do remote application debugging on bsd or how to fix the issue. (I am on x64 freebsd 9) Thanks

• Load external swf from a button in external swf and unload self?

  Hello, I am an uber n00b to flash AS3. And it is not my intention to sound like a complete moron, but honestly, I have had a hard enough time figuring out just how to load an external .swf into my main file! And now my friend is asking me if I could please add a button within the external .swf which will unload itself and load a new on in its place... I have looked around in the forums for an answer for a while now and I believe it is time for me to break down, admit defeat, and ask for help. Can someone please tell me it's not that difficult..? • Refactoring tools for namespaces and physical project structure

  When I hack around, some code tend to get much bigger than originally planned. As this happens I usually introduce/collapse/merge namespaces, move files between them, move folders etc etc. Sometimes, if I don't have a clear picture of the end result, this is a real pain and really easy to just "skip". This leads the project deteriorate where classes belong elsewhere, strange namespaces, no folders/wrong folders etc. And then I usually cannot take it anymore and do a larger cleanup - which is usually not difficult, just very tedious and it feels nice to do everything at once, so I do a code freeze while finishing up. So my question is... Are there any tools to help refactoring the namespace/physical aspects of a project?

• Why people do not like OOP? [closed]

  I do not understand why people choose C++ over Smalltalk in past and why Java over Python or Ruby. What is it that ties people so much to the procedural programming and makes it so difficult to go "all the way" to object oriented programming? What makes OOP hard? Should not objects be an abstraction which is easier to grasp for people, i.e. a more natural one than procedures? Is education the problem (because people tend to learn procedural programming before object oriented)?

• Why Aren't Programs Written In Assembly More Often?

  It seems to be a mainstream opinion that assembly programming takes longer and is more difficult to program in than a higher level language such as C. Therefore it seems to be recommend or assumed that it is better to write in a higher level language for these reasons and for the reason of better portability. Recently I've been writing in x86 assembly and it has dawned on me that perhaps these reasons are not really true, except perhaps portability. Perhaps it is more of a matter of familiarity and knowing how to write assembly well. I also noticed that programming in assembly is quite different than programming in an HLL. Perhaps a good and experienced assembly programmer could write programs just as easily and as quickly as an experienced C programmer writing in C. Perhaps it is because assembly programming is quite different than HLLs, and so requires different thinking, methods and ways, which makes it seem very awkward to program in for the unfamiliar, and so gives it its bad name for writing programs in. If portability isn't an issue, then really, what would C have over a good assembler such as NASM?

• How to ensure I can replace files in a directory?

  I want to completely replace one directory on the file system with another directory in a temp directory. The tricky part is that the files in the folder to be replaced could be being used at any time, causing the replace operation to fail. I need to somehow wait on an exclusive lock on the directory so that I can delete all of its contents without failing, so I can then move the other directory in to replace it. To make matters potentially more difficult, the process that is likely to be using the files is my own (via a Lucene.net library and out of my hands). So it can't be a process-level lock it has to be an object-level lock. Any thoughts on how I might do this? Or should I just keep re-attempting until it succeeds? I guess that's always an option.

To implement this functionality, we first need to find out where the article text should be cut to append the ... [More]. Since there must be some HTML/ CSS coupled with the article text, we must remember to ignore them when calculating the length of the text. But there is something I just can't figure it out, if more than one language is mixed in the first few lines of the article text, the length of the text will be very difficult to calculate since the characters can be of variable length. How should we solve this problem?

• Group SQL tables in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio object explorer

  I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

• How to implement thread timeout in J2ME?

  I am using Connector in J2ME and found that sometimes it take a very long time to send a request, and sometime it may halt the whole process. So I try to put code related to Connector in a thread and try to set timeout to the thread. But I found out that it's very difficult to do this in J2ME because there's no join(long) in J2ME. Is there any way to do this? Or any better way to deal with network connection in J2ME? Thanks a lot in advance.
