• How to Deploy my Open Source Projects using Maven's Central Repository?

  Is there anything I could do to get my own open source stuff into Maven's Central repository? I've wondered many times how I could get my own projects into Maven's Central repository. I was asking this myself, especially as I've seen some well known projects hosting their own repository, requiring users to add dependency and repository. At the same time, it's getting difficult for other projects to depend on those projects. As I neither want others to add an additional repository nor to host one myself, I'm looking for other ways. And why aren't some projects using the option to deploy to Maven Central in favor of their self-hosted repository? Any good reasons that aren't obvious?

• How do I know if I'm being truly clever and not just "clever"?

  If there's one thing I've learned from programming is that there are clever solutions to problems, and then there are "clever" solutions to problems. One is an intelligent solution to a difficult problem that results in improved efficiency and a better way to to do something and the other will wind up on The Daily WTF, and result in headaches and pain for anyone else involved. My question is how do you distinguish between one and the other? How do you figure out if you've over thought the solution? How do you stop yourself from throwing away truly clever solutions, thinking they were "clever"?

• Create pdf file dynamically in vb.net for .net 1.1 framework

  I need to create a pdf file dynamically in vb.net. It needs to contain several images and lines of text. I am using VS 2003, so whatever solution I use will need to be compatible with the .net 1.1 framework. The current method I am using is wpcubed, but this requires that all images be converted to bmp format before adding them to the pdf, which can be extremely slow when dealing with a large number of images. I am aware that there are an awful lot of other 3rd party products that claim to do this, and I have had a search through them. But without registering, downloading, installing and writing code to use each of them in turn, it is very difficult to differentiate between them. So far I have looked into evo pdf and pdfsharp but neither seem to work with .net 1.1. (Although they don't make this abundantly clear.) Has anyone else found a method that works and they would recommend (a free one-if possible)?

• Is there a language designed for code golf?

  I am not really a fan of code golf, but I have to wonder, is there an esoteric language designed for it? I mean a language with following properties: Common programs may be expressed in very short amount of characters It uses ASCII character set effectively (for example, common operators are not identifiers, so they don't have to be separated by whitespace, character usage is distributed more or less evenly because we cannot use Huffman coding and so on) Except the terse syntax, it should have very expressible and clean semantics (like, let's say, Python or Scheme); it shouldn't be difficult to program in It doesn't need features for large scale programs, such as OOP, but it definitely should allow custom functions and data structures It should have a large standard library, identifiers in this library should be as short as possible Maybe it should be called CG? Languages that can be a source of inspiration are Forth, APL and Joy.

• View plain text files with different background colors in Mac OSX, for different programming languag

  Hi, I work with Mac OS X Leopard. I usually have 5 or 10 text files opened at the same time with different programming languages; one for a bash script, another for a python one, etc. When I use exposé all of them look the same, so it is difficult to select them. I wonder how could I work with just plain text files in OSX, so when they are opened in an editor the background color changes or some other thign, so when using exposé it is clear to me which window belongs to what language. I thought about inserting some kind of info to the last line of each document, and then creat some applescript that converts it to RTF or someother text document which includes color in bacjground, so then it is opened with textmate or someother app. Do you know a better approach for this? • Database schema publishing with SQL Server 2005/2008

  Hi everybody, I've a question for you. We have built a software that has a single database for each customer. These databases are managed by SQL Server 2008. Now the problem is that when we build our software we, sometimes, need to change something on the schema (like adding table, modifying existing ones etc) and migrate these updates on all the customers' databases. Now this task is accomplished by hand: we generate update scripts and then, using T-SQL, we update each database. This is ok for a small set of customer, but we are now becoming bigger and bigger and we really don't know how to face it. We found Wizardby and it seems interesting, but quite difficult for us to learn in this exact moment. Do you have any other trick? Thanks a lot, Marco

• Beautifying a SWT application on Mac

  SWT is designed to be cross-platform, so it can run on a Mac. The problem is it commits the cardinal sin of Macland - it's UGLY. Toolbars don't look like Mac toolbars, status bars don't look like Mac status bars, etc. Does anyone have any experience in making an SWT application look more like a Mac application? For example, by making platform-specific JNI calls via the 'OS' class in SWT? If so, how difficult was it? (This question arises because we are looking at porting an existing SWT app designed to run on Windows) Thanks

• Is there a way to configure Fiddler to intercept HTTP calls from a Windows service?

  We're in the process of replacing an old (5+ years) Windows service application built with VS2005 that makes an HTTP GET call. There are several things that make this difficult (such as the web server is on the customer's network and we can't connect directly to it) and, unfortunately, we'd prefer not to take down the running system to replace it with a WinForm version that can be monitored by Fiddler. The new code appears to be doing everything correctly, but, alas, it is failing to authenticate. Is there a way to configure Fiddler (2.2.9.1) to intercept HTTP calls from a Windows service?

• correct way to turn EAR module into OSGI bundle

  Greetings to all! There is a necessity to turn part of EAR (namely - war) into OSGI bundle and retain it's interoperability. Glassfish 3.0.1 already has osgi-web-container module and I succeeded to deploy standalone OSGI war. But in case of of ex-enterprise war it looks a bit difficult to me. What do I do with EJB calls from inside future OSGI war? Is it enough to replace @EJB injections with true JNDI lookups? What about APIs and libraries shared across EAR? I could split and rearrange them, but still I will have at least one jar needed by both EAR and OSGI war. Duplicate, make it as OSGI-bundle itself and make it available to ear somehow, place it GF domain's library path? Any other ideas, advices which could make that hybrid working?   I'm just starting to work with Silverlight (no WPF experience either) and am having a difficult time finding a source that provides a full explanation of Data Binding. There is absolutely no lack of tutorials (starting with the ones on Silverlight.net or Scott Gu's blogs), but everything I have found is "by example". Is there a resource that explains how data binding works in Silverlight, from a Fundamental/Conceptual perspective, and provides end-to-end coverage of data binding features? The desire for a more fundamental source of information is driven by a number of questions that came up this afternoon in reviewing tutorials and writing sample apps, such as: Why can't I bind the value of a slider like this?: Value="{Binding=Age, Mode=TwoWay}" where Age refers to an int property in the object data context I bind in code-behind (the Visual Studio error message is Expected '[]'. How do I use the DataContext property in VS 2010? What's a Path, Relative Source, Static Source, ...?

• Clever "add tag" javascript help needed

  I have this function for adding options to a Select list: function addOption(selectbox, value, text, cl ) { var optn = document.createElement("OPTION"); optn.text = text; optn.value = value; if (cl==1){ optn.className = "nav_option_main"; } selectbox.options.add(optn); } I have just discovered the "optgroup" tag, but I don't know how to implement it to the drop list. The function above is called on another selectboxes "OnChange" event, to fill sub-select-box with the desired options. • how to deal with a static analyzer output

  We have started using a static analyzer (Coverity) on our code base. We were promptly stupefied by the sheer amount of warnings we received (its in the hundreds of thousands) , it will take the entire team a few mounts to clear them all (obliviously impossible). the options we discussed so far are 1) hire a contractor to sort out the warning and fix them - he drawback: we will probably need very experiences people to do all these modifications, and no contractor will have required understanding of the code. 2) filter out the warning and deal only with the dangerous ones - the problem here is that our static analysis output will always be cluttered by warning making it difficult for us to isolate problems. also the filtering of the warning is also a major effort. either way, bringing our code to a state when the static analyzer can be a useful tool for us seems a monumental task. so how is it possible to work with the static analyzer without braining current development efforts into a complete stand still?

• Refactoring tools for namespaces and physical project structure

  When I hack around, some code tend to get much bigger than originally planned. As this happens I usually introduce/collapse/merge namespaces, move files between them, move folders etc etc. Sometimes, if I don't have a clear picture of the end result, this is a real pain and really easy to just "skip". This leads the project deteriorate where classes belong elsewhere, strange namespaces, no folders/wrong folders etc. And then I usually cannot take it anymore and do a larger cleanup - which is usually not difficult, just very tedious and it feels nice to do everything at once, so I do a code freeze while finishing up. So my question is... Are there any tools to help refactoring the namespace/physical aspects of a project?

• MCV/MVP Patterns and Applications that interface with Hardware (DAQ/PLC/etc)

  I've been reading a lot about the MCV and MVP patterns for use with UI and it seems like a really nice powerful way to handle user interfaces. I am - however - having a difficult time deciding how this could integrate into a system where data in the model is created from a Data Acquisition System or Serial/Ethernet devices. There is also the added step that 70% of application interaction is performed by a PLC instead of a live user. It seems that for apps that just read/write & manipulate information from a database this works great, but how does does hardware and automation fit into these patterns? Is it as simple as another controller (for lack of a better term) that interacts with hardware that manipulates data and writes to a model? Maybe I am over thinking this or thinking too simply, so any advice would be great. I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this, so if something doesn't make sense or I was too vague leave me a comment. Thanks!

• debugging on bsd using gdb or similar tootls

  I have started using freebsd lately and realized gdb does not support remote debugging on it. Whenever, I try to do remote debugging using gdbserver, I run into SIGSEGV crashes and error message says can’t find definition of “r_debug_state”. Has anyone ever experienced this and solved it? Statically compiled single threaded programs can be compiled using gdbserver. However, other than that it is mostly looking difficult to use. Let me know if anyone knows any other tools to do remote application debugging on bsd or how to fix the issue. (I am on x64 freebsd 9) Thanks

• How to implement thread timeout in J2ME?

  I am using Connector in J2ME and found that sometimes it take a very long time to send a request, and sometime it may halt the whole process. So I try to put code related to Connector in a thread and try to set timeout to the thread. But I found out that it's very difficult to do this in J2ME because there's no join(long) in J2ME. Besides that they run late (which is indeed a serious problem for many kinds of resources), they are also less powerful because they can only perform a subset of the operations allowed in a destructor (e.g., a finalizer cannot reliably use other objects, whereas a destructor can), and even when writing in that subset finalizers are extremely difficult to write correctly. And collecting finalizable objects is expensive: Each finalizable object, and the potentially huge graph of objects reachable from it, is promoted to the next GC generation, which makes it more expensive to collect by some large multiple. Does this also apply to JVMs in general and to HotSpot in particular?

• Integers in JavaScript

  I'm a beginner to Javascript so forgive me if I sound dumb because I learned some Javascript from W3Fools (which are really difficult tutorials - they don't explain anything I want to know, but everything I probably can guess from my experience with C++). I may be switching over to MDN, but if you can recommend any other tutorials, that be great. Anyways, so here's my question: I just read a few lines of this, and apparently: Numbers in JavaScript are "double-precision 64-bit format IEEE 754 values", according to the spec. This has some interesting consequences. There's no such thing as an integer in JavaScript, so you have to be a little careful with your arithmetic if you're used to math in C or Java. I've already seen that there are few of the data types (for variables) I'm used to from C++. But I didn't expect all numbers to automatically be floats. Isn't there any way to use integers, not float? Will a future version of JavaScript support ints?

• OGRE: Non-Standard Resolution

  I am using OGRE to make a re-rendering of the film, which has a wide aspect ratio (around 1.85). The OGRE dialog seems to be showing the standard full screen resolution by default (800/600, 1024/768, etc.), but those obviously have aspect ratios of 1.333 or around that. But as long as I am not running full screen mode, why should I be restricted to these screen sizes only? I can definitely change the viewport size, but that would make it difficult for me to generate the video later. Any idea?

  Hello, I am an uber n00b to flash AS3. And it is not my intention to sound like a complete moron, but honestly, I have had a hard enough time figuring out just how to load an external .swf into my main file! And now my friend is asking me if I could please add a button within the external .swf which will unload itself and load a new on in its place... I have looked around in the forums for an answer for a while now and I believe it is time for me to break down, admit defeat, and ask for help. Can someone please tell me it's not that difficult..? • Why Aren't Programs Written In Assembly More Often?

  It seems to be a mainstream opinion that assembly programming takes longer and is more difficult to program in than a higher level language such as C. Therefore it seems to be recommend or assumed that it is better to write in a higher level language for these reasons and for the reason of better portability. Recently I've been writing in x86 assembly and it has dawned on me that perhaps these reasons are not really true, except perhaps portability. Perhaps it is more of a matter of familiarity and knowing how to write assembly well. I also noticed that programming in assembly is quite different than programming in an HLL. Perhaps a good and experienced assembly programmer could write programs just as easily and as quickly as an experienced C programmer writing in C. Perhaps it is because assembly programming is quite different than HLLs, and so requires different thinking, methods and ways, which makes it seem very awkward to program in for the unfamiliar, and so gives it its bad name for writing programs in. If portability isn't an issue, then really, what would C have over a good assembler such as NASM?

  We often see websites that display first few lines of an article and then append ... [More] so that people who are interested in can click on it to view the full article. To implement this functionality, we first need to find out where the article text should be cut to append the ... [More]. Since there must be some HTML/ CSS coupled with the article text, we must remember to ignore them when calculating the length of the text. But there is something I just can't figure it out, if more than one language is mixed in the first few lines of the article text, the length of the text will be very difficult to calculate since the characters can be of variable length. How should we solve this problem?
