• Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

  I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• Why is my FTP output file blank?

  From the Windows command prompt, I have FTPd to a Windows web server. I can get a file, and I can see a directory listing with dir, but I want to save that list locally. I tried dir > c:\somefile.txt, and the file is created, but it's blank. Same thing if I do ls > c:\somefile.txt. The result is the same when I FTP from a Linux box. FTP sends back the following: 200 PORT command successful 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls 226 Transfer complete

• Two virtual computers using one laptop?

  Hi, I have a laptop and an external display. I am able to use the external display either as extended desktop OR duplicate desktop. I also use a separate keyboard and mouse. So effectively, the laptop acts just as a box without display. I want to know is it possible to use the laptop as 2 virtual PCs. (with separate control). I.E., one person uses the laptop as a laptop, and other person can simultaneously connect a keyboard and mouse and the external display and effectively get a second PC. OS I am using - windows (thought solution for other OSes are welcome). Laptop is a Dell Precision M6300. thanks JP

• Test disk recovery

  I had a 250GB hard disk having several NTFS partitions. The disk was a dynamic disk (created in windows). Now when I formatted windows (which was in another disk), the dynamic disk is shown as offline. I tried using the testdisk tool to recover the data and created a partial backup. Testdisk is able to list all partitions in the disk. All partitions are shown as type 'D' (Deleted). I want to change the 'D' to 'P' (Primary), 'L'(Logical), 'E' (Extended) appropriately and build a new partition table. If I can write the partition table to disk, the disk will be of 'basic' type and should be readable in all OS. What should be the appropriate partition types? I checked the files on the partitions and no OS was ound. So none of the partitions were bootable. Will randomly selecting P,L,E hurt the data in anyway?

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value.   I'm trying to put together a relatively complex flow-chart thing -as part of a University assignment (health-related, and gosh, does my university love all things Microsoft Office...). Because of the way the chart progresses I have to connect two objects with a 'double elbow' version of the 'elbow arrow connector.' I accept that perhaps this complexity means I should redesign the chart, but I've tried and failed to simplify things already. • Ubuntu 12 Server messing up my hard disk

  I'm installing Ubuntu server on a disk with 12GB available. During the setup, I choose the default LVM-based partition layout. However for some reason, Ubuntu decides that it only wants to use 4GB of this disk. How do I reclaim the remaining space of the hard disk? • XCA: sign IPsec certificates with own CA

  I'm trying to establish a LAN to LAN connection through a VPN tunnel. There's a Zywall at the remote office which will be responsible for establishing a connection to a Draytek at the main office. I'm able to establish the connection if I use shared keys, but I'd like to use certificates instead. I've downloaded the XCA application for Ubuntu which allows me to first create a CA certificate, and then sign "certificate signing reqests" using this CA. However, I'm uncertain if I am doing things right. More specifically<, which basic keys/extended keys should the CA certificate and the certificates themselves have? Right now I just skip selecting any keys at all, but is that right? All hints and help appreciated!

• Scan to email messages downloaded by POP connector on SBS 2008 are delivered to badmail folder.

  I have a Kyocera MFD. I have it set to scan to email using the ISP's SMTP server. The messages are delivered and received by the hosted email server. The POP connector on the SBS server downloads the messages, but delivers them to the badmail folder. I have given the message a subject and a body. • How can I stop my laptop display from flickering when I connect my TV?

  I have a laptop with an HDMI output port running Vista, and an HDTV with HDMI input ports. The laptop is set to extend its desktop onto a second monitor. When I connect the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable, my laptop screen usually flickers rapidly. Most of the time it lasts for about 30 seconds, but sometimes it lasts for several minutes and once in a while it doesn't happen at all. It wouldn't be so bad except that the cursor moves back to the center of the laptop screen with each flicker, so I can't really do anything until the machine decides it's ready to calm down. I haven't been able to find any pattern at all for the causes or duration of the flickering. It doesn't seem to matter what programs the laptop is running when I connect it to the TV, whether I enable the extended display before or after I connect the TV or which HDMI port/cable I use. What could be causing this, and how can I make it go away?

• Multi-monitor setup: one widescreen monitor, one regular (4:3) monitor; is this usually possible?

  I'm trying to find out whether it's generally possible to have a multi-monitor setup with both a widescreen monitor and a regular monitor (ie. one with a 4:3 picture ratio). I'd like to run them in Extended Desktop mode on a Windows Vista machine. The computer is a Dell notebook with an onboard Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset. While I know that this notebook is capable of driving multiple monitors, I don't know if it is also able to drive monitors with varying resolutions. Does anyone know if differing screen resolutions is generally a problem?

  Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI) is a hardware virtualization feature that can potentially give significant performance improvement. Intel's equivalent is Extended Page Tables. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_Virtualization_Indexing for more details. My question is: Does RVI require motherboard or chipset support? If yes, what desktop chipsets support it? I've ordered a Phenom II CPU (which supports RVI) but I haven't bought the motherboard. I'll install XenServer or VMware ESXi (which both support RVI) on the new computer.

I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail: how to do this what the options mean e.g. format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non Mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard DVD as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'Terminal' (the whole point of buying a Mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• Processor not running at max speed

  My laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 which should be running at 2.5GHz, however CPU-Z consistently reports my Core speed at right under 1.6Ghz (8x multiplier and ~200MHz Bus Speed). Even when I'm doing heavy development work and the processor is running at 100% for extended periods of time the core speed reported by CPU-Z never goes up to 2.5GHz. My understanding is that this reduction in speed is to save power, but this happens even when I'm plugged into the outlet. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

• Cannot run setups from a vboxsvr mapped network drive on Windows 7 within VirtualBox

  I'm trying to run an application setup by double-clicking the setup.exe from within Windows Explorer. The file is located on a mapped network drive, and I'm using Windows 7. This results in the following error message: The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. The workaround I found is to copy the installer to the main hard drive (c:) and run it from there; however, this is rather inconvenient. The same action did work on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have the impression that the problem only occurs with installers, as everything seemed to work fine with regular exe's. Is there anyone who can explain this odd behavior? Update: After some extended tests I noticed that the problem only occurs with a mapped drive of VirtualBox's "shared folders" (cf. vboxsvr). Mapping an SMB drive works fine.

• Sane(r) way to get character-encoding of CLI?

  Hi all! I was writing a CLI-Tool for Mac OS X (10.5+) that has to deal with command-line arguments which are very likely to contain non-ASCII characters. For further processing, I convert these arguments using +[NSString stringWithCString:encoding:]. My problem is, that I couldn't find good information on how to determine the character-encoding used by the shell in which said cli-tool is running in. What I came up with as a solution is the following: NSDictionary *environment = [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] environment]; NSString *ianaName = [[environment objectForKey:@"LANG"] pathExtension]; NSStringEncoding encoding = CFStringConvertEncodingToNSStringEncoding( CFStringConvertIANACharSetNameToEncoding( (CFStringRef)ianaName ) ); NSString *someArgument = [NSString stringWithCString:argv[someIndex] encoding:encoding]; I find that a little crude, however -- which makes me think that I missed out something obvious...but what? • How do I learn IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD from pfSense

  I've been trying to figure out a complete working solution for IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD but with no luck till now. pfSense seems did a fantastic job on supporting IPSec and even for mobile clients, so I downloaded and installed pfSense hoping to figure out how it works, or at least see some configuration examples, but I couldn't find anything interesting maybe because I'm not familiar with pfSense, so I'd like to ask for help. How pfSense implements IPSec, what tools are used? Where does pfSense store all its configuration files? And since pfSense has its own kernel mods and acts as a different OS, there's no way for us to install it on top of an existing FreeBSD box, and plus that it is such a great project combining those fantastic features, so my question can kinda be extended as: How do we learn from pfSense, and implement its features on top of a regular FreeBSD server?

• Best software to edit your photos (red-eye correction etc.)

  Hello. My mother wants me to correct her photos (red eye, some other defects). But, actually, I don't know what tool I can use on Windows for digital photo editing. Preferably, free of course. I was going to try F-Spot for that, but found, that it's available only on Linux. Can you suggest something cool for photo editing? I need to edit, NOT organize. GIMP is too complex, Paint .NET seem not to be capable of extended correction functions.

  In a generic, modern unix environment (say, GNU/Linux, GNU/Solaris, or Mac OS X), is there a good way to determine which mountpoint and filesystem-type a particular absolute file path is on? I suppose I could execute the mount command and manually parse the output of that and string-compare it with my file path, but before I do that I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way. I'm developing a BASH script that makes use of extended attributes, and want to make it Do The Right Thing (to the small extent that it is possible) for a variety of filesystems and host environments.

  I have a server running multiple instances of mysql and also has the zabbix-agent running. In zabbix_agentd.conf i have specified: UserParameter=multi.mysql[*],mysqladmin --socket=$1 -uzabbixagent extended-status 2>/dev/null | awk '/ $3 /{print $$4}' where $1 is the socket instance. From the zabbix server i can run the test successfully. zabbix_get -s ip_of_server -k multi.mysql[/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock] and it returns all the values However the zabbix item/trigger does not generate the graphs, I have created a MACRO for $1 which is the socket location {$MYSQL_SOCKET1} = '/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock' and i use this key in items to poll the value multi.mysql[{$MYSQL_SOCKET1},Bytes_sent] LOGS: this is what i get on the logs: 3360:20120214:144716.278 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_received]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters 3360:20120214:144716.372 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_sent]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters Any ideas where the problem could be? • how to check in a bash script where the shell is run from

  I am fuzzy about how to set a command in a script to be run only when the shell is running within an X session. basically, in ~/.bashrc I set my keyboard maps as setxkbmap -layout 'us,gr' -variant 'altgr-intl,extended' -option grp:alt_shift_toggle If I am connecting through putty , or otherwise, and i just open a command prompt window, I DONT want this command to run. If on the other hand, i have an X session running (locally or remotely) I want this command to run. how can I do this checking in a bash script? Is there a bash environment variable I can be looking at? some other way? Thank you for your help

• Laptop connected to external monitor results in desktop overflow

  I have a laptop (MSi FX600) connected to an external monitor (Toshiba 19AV500U) with the screen resolution set to the monitors recommended setting of 1440x900. The problem is the desktop is overflowing the display, meaning all edges of the desktop are cut off, so I cannot see the close, minimize buttons on the top and I only see half of the taskbar at the bottom. I have tried many different resolutions but none of them solve the problem. I have had this same problem when connecting to other external monitors in the past, but not all of them, it seems to be fairly random. I have tried to find a way to manually adjust the resolution but I cannot see a way to do this in my settings. All windows updates are up to date, I am connecting through an HDMI cable and I have it set to display only on the external monitor and not extended desktop.
