• Ubuntu dual boot and grub error 18

  I've attempted to install 9.04 on an older toshiba laptop with a new 300GB drive and am getting the dreaded Grub error 18 that indicates that grub is looking beyond the bios readable area of the HD and failing. I just let ubuntu roll with its default selections when installing and ended up with this: Drive layout /dev/sda1 -ntfs 128GB -boot /dev/sda2 -extended 170GB -lba /dev/sda5 -ntfs 167.59GB /dev/sda6 -ext3 2.33GB /dev/sda7 -linux-swap 172MB I'd like make the system dual bootable without having to reinstall windows (real pain since I would have to go through an obstructionist IT dept). I know I can make windows bootable with a rescue disk and fixmbr but is there something I can do to make it dual bootable using the ubuntu livecd? Alternately, what should I have done at the partition stage of ubuntu installation to avoid this?

  I have one computer which is equipped with a TV tuner card. The Recorded TV folder is shared so that other computers on the network can watch recordings. Now that I am upgrading my computers to Windows 7, they have Media Center, which makes for a nicer viewing experience than a Windows Explorer folder view. I have set up Media Center on my laptop to considering the Recorded TV folder on the tuner-equipped PC as an extended library location, so now I can view all the recordings from within Media Center on the laptop. To make this experience even better, is there a way to view the list of scheduled recordings on the tuner-equipped PC from within Media Center on my laptop?

• Disk Utility Restore causes "Could not validate resource - Invalid Argument"

  I have a problem with Disk Utility on Mac OS X 10.6. I have an image of Windows that I would like to use as a bootable volume on a pen drive or external hard drive. The thing is: When I try to restore the volume from the image I get an error: "Restore Failure: Could not validate resource - Invalid Argument" I read some information about that error on the Internet. I converted the image into .iso (Mac OS Extended/ISO (Joliet) Hybrid Image) format and then got this error: "Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored." When I try to scan the image for Restore, I get the first message. I really read a lot of information about this topic on the Internet, but I haven't found the solution. I tried both ISO and DMG formats; I don't know which is best.

  I'm a bit of a beginner with Unix systems, but I'm running Cygwin on my Windows Server, and I am trying to figure out something related to extended ACLs. I have a directory to which I set the following ACLs: Administrator@MyServer ~ $ setfacl -m d:u:Someuser:r-- somedir Administrator@MyServer ~ $ getfacl somedir/ # file: somedir/ # owner: Administrator # group: None user::rwx group::r-x mask:rwx other:r-x default:user::rwx default:user:Someuser:r-- default:group::r-x default:mask:rwx default:other:r-x As you can see mose of the default ACLs have the x bit. Then when I create a fine in it, it doesn't inherit the ACLs it is supposed to: Administrator@MyServer ~ $ touch somedir/somefile Administrator@MyServer ~ $ getfacl somedir/somefile # file: somedir/somefile # owner: Administrator # group: None user::rw- user:Someuser:r-- group::r-- mask:rwx other:r-- It's basically missing the x bit everywhere.   On the NIST website, there is a tool called sts (Statistical Test Suite) that allow us to rest the validity of a pseudo-random number generator based on a stream of bits in input. When running the program, there is two variables I am not sure to understand : the stream length and number of bitstream. Is the stream length the size of the file ? The number of bit inside ? The size of a bitstream ? Are the bitstreams subset of the whole file ? Chosen how ? Let say I have a text file containing 1,000,000 bits in ascii. What should be my arguments ?   I have successfully configured an Extended-Validation Certificate on an Azure Website following this article: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-configure-ssl-certificate/ The main (non-technical) stakeholder of the web application went through great lengths to validate that our site is secure. He went to this site to check the validity of our SSL: http://www.whynopadlock.com/ The site throw the following error: `SSL verification issue (Possibly mis-matched URL or bad intermediate cert.). Details: ERROR: no certificate subject alternative name matches`` The certificate is installed using IP Based SSL instead of SNI. This is done this way because some site visitors still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP, which has no support for SNI and throws a security warning. Is my certificate correclty installed? I received three .CRT files from my SSL provider: PrimaryIntermediate.crt SecondaryIntermediate.crt EndCertificate.crt This is how I exported our certificate as a .PFX file to Azure: openssl pkcs12 -export -out myserver.pfx -inkey myserver.key -in myserver.crt

  I've started a headless virtualbox instance with this command: VBoxManage startvm "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" --type headless Waiting for VM "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" to power on... VM "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" has been successfully started. It is set up with Remote Desktop Server Port:5555 with Authentication Method: Null and Extended Features: Allow Multiple Connections and it's now running, but I don't know how to connect to it from the same laptop where it's running. I would like to be able to have it running on a terminal. I tried this but nothing happens: rdesktop localhost:5555 ERROR: localhost: unable to connect rdesktop 192.168.1.1:5555 Any ideas?

  My computer recently had a hardware upgrade and now runs on Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu 11.04 as dual boot using the ISO I got from ubuntu.com downloaded onto my USB stick. Restarting with the USB stick, I was able to install Ubuntu 11.04 choosing the option: Install Ubuntu 11.04 side by side with Windows 7 (or something like that). No errors were encountered on installation. However on restarting, there was no GRUB; the system went straight into Windows 7.   It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

• Multiple monitors on ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR2 (Brand: Sapphire)

  From other posts here, I understand that it might be possible to use up to 3 monitors on this card. My understanding (from the other posts here as well) is that since I have a HDMI output, I do not have a 'DisplayPort', right ? Mine has indeed 3 ports: DVI, HDMI and VGA. Can I have dual-monitor using both the HDMI and DVI ports simulataneously (I am not looking for Eyefinity, but simply extended desktop). Currently I am using dual monitor with DVI and VGA but will replace my 17 inches next week with a new (larger) one that has both VGA and DVI, so I intend to use both monitors connected digitally. I intend to purchase a cable ''HDMI to DVI''(MM) to do so on the second monitor. Optimal resolution on the one I intend to keep (22 inches) : 1680 x 1050, primary monitor. New one (24 inches) has an optimal resolution of 1920 x 1080. Am I running for problems ? Thanks, Rob

• GVFS Locations Not Available In ~/.gvfs

  So, I can mount GVFS locations correctly (specifically CIFS) either from the Gnome "Places" menu, or via the command line gvfs-mount, but the filesystem is not mounted in the expected location; ~/.gvfs. In fact, running the mount command does not list any GVFS filesystem at all. This is reproducible for non-root users while the root user behaves as expected. Strace reveals a permissions error for the user mounting the filesystem for the path /home/username/.gvfs. Ownership and permissions are correct and there are no extended attributes for the path as revealed by lsattr. Also, /root/.gvfs and /home/username/.gvfs are on the same filesystem. All packages are current. Any ideas?

• Trouble with external monitor under Windows 7 on MacBook Pro Boot Camp

  I'm running Windows 7 32-bit on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 under Boot Camp. I've had trouble getting it to work with my second display and searching Google for an appropriate answer has failed me. I'm on the latest version of Boot Camp - 3.2 - and have updated the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. The monitor is connected via a VGA cable, and is a Dell ST2410. The monitor is recognised by Windows, which knows it's a Dell and its resolution. The desktop should be extended onto the second monitor - however nothing is showing. It remains black, though it doesn't show a lack of signal coming through which I would have expected. Any ideas what's wrong?

I want it to display for an extended period. The problem is, when I set its display time for 3:20 (minutes:seconds), it performs its transition over the whole period. • Foremost custom file type not accepted by -t argument

  I'm trying to recover a deleted file on an ext3 file system using the foremost utility. The file I want to recover is a hpp C++ source code file. However, foremost does not automatically support the hpp file extension, so I have to add it to the config file. So, following the instructions on the man page, I add the following line to the config file: hpp n 50000 include include ASCII Then I run foremost as follows: $foremost -v -T -t hpp -i /dev/md0 -o /home/recover/ Instead of doing anything, it just displays the help message. If I change the hpp to htm or jpg, it works. So apparently foremost isn't accepting the custom file type I added into the config file. But I've looked over this dozens of times now, and I can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm following the instructions exactly. Why doesn't foremost recognize the new file type I added to the config file?

  I created a partition E and then deleted the partition. After that I extended my partition C (where OS was installed) to take the space. My partition C became hybrid drive. My hp notebook does not have DVD rom and the notebook only came with an recovery image (I also have a paragon disc image). My computer has some problems now and I want to recover it by either the factory format or the paragon disc image. However, none of them works. I know it is because my disc has become hybrid disk. My question is how to fix the dynamic disk problem?

• Cannot resize an ntfs (Windows Server 2k3r2) boot partition booting from gparted

  I am trying to use gparted to make my ntfs system/boot partition larger. I expanded the disk in ESX, providing an extra 60 GB or so of free space. I confirmed that this free space is available in gparted: However, when I try to go to "Move/Resize" the boot partition, there is no unallocated space for me to allocate. It will let me resize the "extended" (non-boot) partition, which makes me think the issue is that the partitions are not contiguous. If it's not obvious, I am no expert in partitioning/storage so any help is appreciated.

• What are 'damaged files' on external hard drive (HFS format for OS X)?

  I have an external HD formatted to default HFS (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and very once and a while I get a folder called DamagedFiles in the root of the volume. The folder contains a collection of links to files on the drive. In general the files seem fine as I am for example able to open the images or text files without a problem. Is this serious? What can I do to fix this problem? Any advice would be great as I couldn't find anything on here or via Google that addressed this problem in particular. Many thanks.

• Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (TrueCrypt) Multi-boot Problems

  I have now been searching days for a solution but have found nothing. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 with TrueCrypt as a multi-boot. It was working fine for a few weeks until I needed to reinstall Ubuntu. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Windows 7 is install (This is where the boot flags was when working before.), it boots fine in to Windows 7 but when pressing Esc it can't find grub2. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Ubuntu is install, it boots fine in to Ubuntu (by pressing Esc or typing the password) but unable to access Windows. I have tried reinstalling TrueCrypt Boot loader and repairing the header but it have no affect. My Partitions: sda1 - Windows 7 Recovery (GRUB2) sda2 - Windows 7 (TrueCrypt Boot Loader) sda3 - Ubuntu 10.10 (/) sda4 - Extended sda5 - Swap sda6 - Ubuntu (/home) Does anyone have any ideas? • Photoshop How to save selection to PNG

  I have a largish PSD file with a couple of hundred layers, that I would like to extract selected areas from into PNG files. Areas can consist of a couple of layers. Being new to Photoshop, I have been using the following workaround. Duplicate needed layers into a new scratch PSD file of same size, TRIM to transparency, Save As PNG, undo TRIM, hide layers, rinse and repeat... I suppose I could do it without the scratch file and just crop selection, Save As PNG and undo, but there must be a nicer method. What other ways are there to accomplish this export of a selected area to PNG? EDIT: This is on Windows Xp running Photoshop CS3 Extended

• Wireless controllers vs wireless usb hub

  For my htpc i currently only have a steerin wheel as a controller. This is wired and it looks really bad having extended usb wires from the tv to the table. However im thinking of bying some new Gamepads and now comes the question. Should i buy wireless ones or wired and connect them to a wireless usb hub? Having a wireless hub would let me manage my gamepads easily from the couch. A wireless hub also allows me to connect other things that are not input devices from the couch. However im wondering if wireless usb hubs may not be made for input devices in the way that they may not have 100% uptime and probably some delay. Am i right about this?

• How to move mail among Google Apps for Domains users

  Considering moving the domain used by my extended family for email to Google Apps. One less server for me to manage, better spam filtering, etc. One thing that's been nice about running my own has been the way I manage my kids' incoming email - it comes to me first, and I drop good mail in a symlinked IMAP folder that we share. A little procmail is all it takes, and straight-through exceptions are easy to implement. (FYI, no I'm not advocating censorship, but manually filtering spam and viruses from my 8-year-old's inbox seems like the right thing to do. YMMV) Anyway. I'm wondering if there's an easy way to do something similar in Google Apps - setting up filters to auto-redirect to me looks easy enough (any gotchas there?), but moving things back is not obvious. Yes, I could access both accounts via IMAP and drag mails across, but does anyone have an easier way?
